A major remaining challenge for $Nb_3Sn$ high field magnets is their training due to random temperature variations in the coils. The main objective of our research is to reduce or eliminate it by finding novel impregnation materials with respect to the epoxies currently used. An organic olefin-based thermosetting dicyclopentadiene (DCP) resin, $C_10H_12$, commercially available in Japan as TELENE by RIMTEC, was used to impregnate a short $Nb_3Sn$ undulator coil developed by ANL and FNAL. This magnet reached short sample limit after only two quenches, compared with several dozens when $CTD-101K$ was used. Ductility, i.e. the ability to accept large strains, and toughness were identified as key properties to achieve these results. In addition, we have been investigating whether mixing TELENE with high heat capacity ceramic powders, increases the specific heat ($C_p$) of impregnated $Nb_3Sn$ superconducting magnets. The viscosity, heat capacity, thermal conductivity, and other physical properties of TELENE with $high-C_p$ powder fillers were measured in this study as a function of temperature and magnetic field. Mixing TELENE with either $Gd_2O_3$, $Gd_2O_2S$, and $HoCu_2$ increases its $C_p$ tenfold. We have also investigated the effect on the mechanical properties of pure and mixed TELENE under 10 $Gy$ of gamma-ray irradiation at the Takasaki Advanced Radiation Research Institute in Takasaki, Japan. Whereas both $TELENE-82wt\%Gd_2O_3$ and $TELENE-83wt\%HoCu_2$ performed well, the best mechanical properties after irradiation were obtained for $TELENE-87wt\%Gd2O_2S$. Testing a short undulator in the future with the latter impregnation material will verify whether it will further improve the coils thermal stability. Short magnet training will lead to better magnet reliability, lower risk and substantial saving in accelerators commissioning costs.

Theoretical and experimental studies of intrinsic Josephson junctions that naturally occur in high-Tc superconducting Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212) have demonstrated their potential for novel types of compact devices for the generation and sensing of electromagnetic radiation in the THz range. Here, we show that the THz-on-a-chip concept may be realized in liquid phase epitaxial-grown (LPE) thick Bi-2212 films. We have grown μm-thick Bi-2212 LPE films on MgO substrates. These films display excellent c-axis alignment and single crystal grains of about 650x150 μm2 in size. A branched current-voltage characteristic was clearly observed in c-axis transport, which is a clear signature of underdamped intrinsic Josephson junctions, and a prerequisite for THz-generation. We discuss LPE growth conditions allowing improvement of the structural quality and superconducting properties of Bi-2212 films for THz applications.

BaZrO3 (BZO) nanorods are now incorporated into production IBAD-MOCVD coated conductors. Here we compare several examples of both BZO-free and BZO-containing coated conductors using critical current (Ic) characterizations at 4.2 K over their full angular range up to fields of 31 T. We find that BZO nanorods do not produce any c-axis distortion of the critical current density Jc(theta) curve at 4.2 K at any field, but also that pinning is nevertheless strongly enhanced compared to the non-BZO conductors. We also find that the tendency of the ab-plane Jc(theta) peak to become cusp-like is moderated by BZO and we define a new figure of merit that may be helpful for magnet design - the OADI (Off-Axis Double Ic), which clearly shows that BZO broadens the ab-plane peak and thus raises Jc 5-30° away from the tape plane, where the most critical approach to Ic occurs in many coil designs. We describe some experimental procedures that may make critical current Ic tests of these very high current tapes more tractable at 4.2 K, where Ic exceeds 1000 A even for 4 mm wide tape with only 1 micron thickness of superconductor. A positive conclusion is that BZO is very beneficial for the Jc characteristics at 4.2 K, just as it is at higher temperatures, where the correlated c-axis pinning effects of the nanorods are much more obvious.
