Automated Segmentation of Large Image Datasets using Artificial Intelligence for Microstructure Characterisation, Damage Analysis and High-Throughput Modelling Input

To optimise future materials, understanding the microstructure is critically important. Here, we present two novel approaches based on artificial intelligence that allow the segmentation of the phases of a microstructure for which simple numerical approaches, such as thresholding, are not applicable: One is based on the nnU-Net neural network, and the other on generative adversarial networks (GAN). Using large panoramic scanning electron microscopy images of dual-phase steels as a case study, we demonstrate how both methods effectively segment intricate microstructural details, including martensite, ferrite, and damage sites, for subsequent analysis. Either method shows substantial generalizability across a range of image sizes and conditions, including heat-treated microstructures with different phase configurations. The nnU-Net excels in map** large image areas. Conversely, the GAN-based method performs reliably on smaller images, providing greater step-by-step control and flexibility over the segmentation process. This study highlights the benefits of segmented microstructural data for various purposes, such as calculating phase fractions, modelling material behaviour through finite element simulation, and conducting geometrical analyses of damage sites and the local properties of their surrounding microstructure. △ Less

Rate dependence of damage formation in metallic-intermetallic Mg-Al-Ca composites

However, in application, the alloy may be subjected to a wide range of strain rates and in material development, accelerated testing is often of essence. It is therefore crucial to understand the effect of such rate variations. Here, we focus on their impact on damage formation. Due to the locally highly variable skeleton forming the reinforcement in this alloy, we employ an analysis based on high resolution panoramic imaging by scanning electron microscopy coupled with automated damage analysis by deep learning-based object detection and classification convolutional neural network algorithm (YOLOV5). We find that with decreasing strain rate the dominant damage mechanism for a given strain level changes: at a strain rate of $5\cdot10^{-4}/s$ the evolution of microcracks in the C36 Laves phase governs damage formation. However , when the strain rate is decreased to $5\cdot10^{-6}/s$, interface decohesion at the $α$-Mg/Laves phase interfaces becomes equally important. We also observe a change in crack orientation indicating an increasing influence of plastic co-deformation of the α-Mg matrix and Laves phase. We attribute this transition in leading damage mechanism to thermally activated processes at the interface. △ Less

Three-Dimensional Damage Characterisation in Dual Phase Steel using Deep Learning

To capture damage in terms of the physical processes in three dimensions (3D) and its stochastic nature during deformation, two challenges remain to be tackled: First, bridging high resolution analysis… ▽ More High performance sheet metals with a multi-phase microstructure suffer from deformation induced damage formation during forming in the constituent phases but importantly also where these intersect. To capture damage in terms of the physical processes in three dimensions (3D) and its stochastic nature during deformation, two challenges remain to be tackled: First, bridging high resolution analysis towards large scales to consider statistical data and, second, characterising in 3D with a resolution appropriate for sub-micron sized voids at a large scale. Here, we present how this can be achieved using panoramic scanning electron microscopy (SEM), metallographic serial sectioning, and deep-learning assisted automatic image analysis. This brings together the 3D evolution of active damage mechanisms with volumetric and environmental information for thousands of individual damage sites. We also assess potential surface preparation artefacts in 2D analyses. Overall, we find that for the material considered here, a dual phase (DP800) steel, martensite cracking is the dominant but not sole origin of deformation induced damage and that for a quantitative comparison of damage density, metallographic preparation can induce additional surface damage density far exceeding what is commonly induced between uniaxial straining steps. △ Less

In contrast to point estimates, such as the conditional mean of the underlying probability distribution, or confidence intervals, forecasting complete probability density functions allows to investigate the impact on operational metrics, which are important to define the business strategy, over the full range of the expected demand. Whereas metrics evaluating point estimates are widely used, methods for assessing the accuracy of predicted distributions are rare, and this work proposes new techniques for both qualitative and quantitative evaluation methods. Using the supervised machine learning method "Cyclic Boosting", complete individual probability density functions can be predicted such that each prediction is fully explainable. This is of particular importance for practitioners, as it allows to avoid "black-box" models and understand the contributing factors for each individual prediction. Another crucial aspect in terms of both explainability and generalizability of demand forecasting methods is the limitation of the influence of temporal confounding, which is prevalent in most state of the art approaches. △ Less

High-resolution, yet statistically relevant, analysis of damage in DP steel using artificial intelligence

Their properties exceed those of the individual components and their knowledge-based improvement therefore requires understanding beyond that of the components' individual behaviour. Electron microscopy has been instrumental in unravelling the most important mechanisms of co-deformation and in-situ deformation experiments have emerged as a popular and accessible technique. However, a challenge remains: to achieve high spatial resolution and statistical relevance in combination. Here, we overcome this limitation by using panoramic imaging and machine learning to study damage in a dual-phase steel. This high-throughput approach not only gives us strain and microstructure dependent insights across a large area of this heterogeneous material, but also encourages us to expand current research past interpretation of exemplary cases of distinct damage sites towards the less clear-cut reality. △ Less

Quantum numbers of the $X(3872)$ state and orbital angular momentum in its $ρ^0 Jψ$ decay

The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb$^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions collected with the LHCb detector. First observation of the decay $B_{c}^{+}\to J/ψK^+$

First observation of the decay $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$

The significance of $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ signal is 6.1 standard deviations. The fraction of longitudinal polarization in $B_s^0 \rightarrow φ\bar{K}^{*0}$ decays is found to be $f_0 = 0.51 \pm 0.15 (stat) \pm 0.07 (syst)$. △ Less

Abstract: A search for the rare decay $D^0 \to μ^+ μ^-$is performed using a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.9 fb$^{-1}$, of $pp$ collisions collected at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV by the LHCb experiment. Abstract: The determination of the differential branching fraction and the first angular analysis of the decay $B_s^0\toφμ^{+}μ^{-}$ are presented using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$, collected by the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s}=7\,{\rm TeV}$. Measurement of the CKM angle gamma from a combination of B->Dh analyses

Abstract: A combination of three LHCb measurements of the CKM angle gamma is presented. The decays B->DK and B->Dpi are used, where D denotes an admixture of D0 and D0-bar mesons, decaying into K+K-, pi+pi-, K+-pi-+, K+-pi-+pi+-pi-+, KSpi+pi-, or KSK+K- final states. All measurements use a dataset corresponding to 1.0 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. All measurements use a dataset corresponding to 1.0 fb-1 of integrated luminosity. Combining results from B->DK decays alone a best-fit value of gamma = 72.0 deg is found, and confidence intervals are set gamma in [56.4,86.7] deg at 68% CL, gamma in [42.6,99.6] deg at 95% CL. The best-fit value of gamma found from a combination of results from B->Dpi decays alone, is gamma = 18.9 deg, and the confidence intervals gamma in [7.4,99.2] deg or [167.9,176.4] deg at 68% CL, are set, without constraint at 95% CL. The combination of results from B->DK and B->Dpi decays gives a best-fit value of gamma = 72.6 deg and the confidence intervals gamma in [55.4,82.3] deg at 68% CL, gamma in [40.2,92.7] deg at 95% CL are set. All values are expressed modulo 180 deg, and are obtained taking into account the effect of D0-D0bar mixing. △ Less

Abstract: This paper reports the first measurement of the effective B_s^0 -> J/ψ K_S^0 lifetime and an updated measurement of its time-integrated branching fraction. Both measurements are performed with a data sample, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb^{-1} of pp collisions, recorded by the LHCb experiment in 2011 at a centre-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. The results are: tau_J/ψK_S^0 = 1.75 +/-… ▽ More This paper reports the first measurement of the effective B_s^0 -> J/ψ K_S^0 lifetime and an updated measurement of its time-integrated branching fraction. Abstract: The time-dependent CP asymmetry in B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays is measured using $pp$ collision data at \sqrt{s}=7TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0fb^-1, collected with the LHCb detector. The decay time distribution is characterised by the decay widths Γ_L and Γ_H of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_s^0--\bar{B}_s^0 system and by a CP-violating phase φ_s. The decay time distribution is characterised by the decay widths Γ_L and Γ_H of the light and heavy mass eigenstates of the B_s^0--\bar{B}_s^0 system and by a CP-violating phase φ_s. In a sample of 27\,617 B_s^0\to J/ψK^+K^- decays, where the dominant contribution comes from B_s^0\to J/ψφ decays, these parameters are measured to be φ_s = 0.07 \pm 0.09 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad, Γ_s \equiv (Γ_L+Γ_H)/2 = 0.663 \pm 0.005 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1, ΔΓ_s \equiv Γ_L -Γ_H = 0.100 \pm 0.016 (stat) \pm 0.003 (syst) & ps^-1, corresponding to the single most precise determination of φ_s, ΔΓ_s and Γ_s. The result of performing a combined analysis with B_s^{0} \to J/ψπ^+π^- decays gives φ_s = 0.01 \pm 0.07 (stat) \pm 0.01 (syst) rad, Γ_s = 0.661 \pm 0.004 (stat) \pm 0.006 (syst) ps^-1, ΔΓ_s = 0.106 \pm 0.011 (stat) \pm 0.007 (syst) & ps^-1. Limits on neutral Higgs boson production in the forward region in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 7$ TeV

Candidates are identified by reconstructing final states with two muons, a muon and an electron, a muon and a hadron, or an electron and a hadron. A model independent upper limit at the 95% confidence level is set on a neutral Higgs boson cross-section times branching fraction. It varies from 8.6 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 90 GeV to 0.7 pb for a Higgs boson mass of 250 GeV, and is compared to the Standard Model expectation. An upper limit on $\tanβ$ in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model is set in the $m_{h^0}^\mathrm{max}$ scenario. Observation of the decay $B_c^+ \to ψ(2S)π^+$

Abstract: The decay $B_c^+ \to ψ(2S)π^+$ with $ψ(2S) \to μ^+μ^-$ is observed with a significance of $5.2\,σ$ using $pp$ collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $1.0\,\invfb$ collected by the LHCb experiment. Search for rare $B^0_{(s)}\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-$ decays

Abstract: \noindent A search for the decays $B^0_{s}\rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-$ and $B^0 \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^-$ is performed using data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0\ensuremath{\{\,fb}^{-1}}\xspace, collected with the LHCb detector in 2011. In addition, limits are set in the context of a supersymmetric model which allows for the $B^0_{(s)}$ meson to decay into a scalar ($S$) and pseudoscalar particle ($P$), where $S$ and $P$ have masses of 2.5 GeV and 214.3 MeV, respectively, both resonances decay into $μ^+μ^-$. Abstract: The quantum numbers of the X(3872) meson are determined to be JPC = 1++ based on angular correlations in B+ to X(3872) K+ decays, where X(3872) to pi+pi- J/psi and J/psi to μ+μ-. The data correspond to 1.0 fb-1 of pp collisions collected by the LHCb detector. Differential cross-sections dsigma/dp_T are measured for prompt production of the five charmed hadron species in bins of transverse momentum and rapidity in the region 0 < p_T < 8 GeV/c and 2.0 < y < 4.5. Theoretical predictions are compared to the measured differential cross-sections. The integrated cross-sections of the charm hadrons are computed in the above p_T-y range, and their ratios are reported. A combination of the five integrated cross-section measurements gives sigma(c\bar{c})_{p_T < 8 GeV/c, 2.0 < y < 4.5} = 1419 +/- 12 (stat) +/- 116 (syst) +/- 65 (frag) microbarn, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the fragmentation functions. △ Less

The cross-section times branching fractions to two muons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 are measured to be… ▽ More Exclusive $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$ vector meson production has been observed in the dimuon channel using the LHCb detector. The cross-section times branching fractions to two muons with pseudorapidities between 2.0 and 4.5 are measured to be $ σ_{pp\rightarrow J/ψ(\rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-})} (2.0 <η_{μ^{\pm}}< 4.5) = 307 \pm 21 \pm 36 \text{pb}, σ_{pp\rightarrow ψ(2S) (\rightarrow μ^{+} μ^{-})} (2.0 <η_{μ^{\pm}}< 4.5) = 7.8 \pm 1.3 \pm 1.0 \text{pb}, $ where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. The measurements are found to be in good agreement with results from previous experiments and theoretical predictions. The $J/ψ$ photoproduction cross-section has been measured as a function of the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy. The results are consistent with measurements obtained at HERA and confirm a similar power law behaviour for the photoproduction cross-section. △ Less

These effects can be investigated using measurements of the Cabibbo-suppressed B0->J/ψpi+pi- decays. These effects can be investigated using measurements of the Cabibbo-suppressed B0->J/ψpi+pi- decays. The final state composition of this channel is investigated using a 1.0/fb sample of data produced in 7 TeV pp collisions at the LHC and collected by the LHCb experiment. A modified Dalitz plot analysis is performed using both the invariant mass spectra and the decay angular distributions. An improved measurement of the B0->J/ψpi+pi- branching fraction of (3.97 +/-0.09+/- 0.11 +/- 0.16)x10^{-5} is reported where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the third is due to the uncertainty of the branching fraction of the decay B- -> J/ψK- used as a normalization channel. In the J/ψpi+pi- final state significant production of f0(500) and rho(770) resonances is found, both of which can be used for CP violation studies. In contrast evidence for the f0(980) resonance is not found, thus establishing the first upper limit on the branching fraction product B(B0->J/ψf0(980) x B(f0(980)-> pi+ pi-) < 1.1x10^{-6}, leading to an upper limit on the absolute value of the mixing angle of the f0(980)$ with the f0(500) of <31 degrees, both at 90% confidence level. △ Less

The ratio of production rates, $f_{s}/f_{d}$, is measured to be $0.238 \pm 0.004 \pm 0.015 \pm 0.021 $, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third theoretical. This is combined with a previous LHCb measurement to obtain $f_{s}/f_{d} = 0.256 \pm 0.020$. The dependence of $f_{s}/f_{d}$ on the transverse momentum and pseudorapidity of the $B$ meson is determined using the decays $B^{0}_{s} \rightarrow D^{-}_{s}π^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$. There is evidence for a decrease with increasing transverse momentum, whereas the ratio remains constant as a function of pseudorapidity. In addition, the ratio of branching fractions of the decays $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}K^{+}$ and $B^{0} \rightarrow D^{-}π^{+}$ is measured to be $0.0822 \pm 0.0011 (\textrm{stat}) \pm 0.0025 (\textrm{syst})$. △ Less

The ratio of the B-flavour averaged decay rates in D decays to CP and non-CP eigenstates is measured to be R_d_KK = 1.36 (+0.37) (-0.32) +- 0.07, where the ratio of the branching fractions of D0 -> K- pi+ to D0 -> K+ K- decays is included as multiplicative factor. The CP asymmetries measured with two control channels, the favoured B0 -> DK*0 decay with D -> K+ pi- and the Bs0bar -> D K*0 decay with D K+ K-, are also reported. △ Less
