A prototype of Multi-strip Multi-gap Resistive Plate chamber (MMRPC) with active area 40 cm $\times$ 20 cm has been developed at SINP, Kolkata. Detailed response of the developed detector was studied with the pulsed electron beam from ELBE at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf. In this report the response of SINP developed MMRPC with different controlling parameters is described in details. The obtained time resolution ($σ_t$) of the detector after slew correction was 91.5$ \pm $3 ps. Position resolution measured along ($σ_x$) and across ($σ_y$) the strip was 2.8$\pm$0.6 cm and 0.58 cm, respectively. The measured absolute efficiency of the detector for minimum ionizing particle like electron was 95.8$\pm$1.3 $\%$. Better timing resolution of the detector can be achieved by restricting the events to a single strip. The response of the detector was mainly in avalanche mode but a few percentage of streamer mode response was also observed. A comparison of the response of these two modes with trigger rate was studied

The neutron detection efficiency has been determined using two different methods. The data are in agreement with the output of Monte Carlo simulations. The electromagnetic dipole strength below the neutron-separation energy has been studied for the xenon isotopes with mass numbers A = 124, 128, 132, and 134 in nuclear resonance fluorescence experiments using the ELBE bremsstrahlung facility at Helmholtz-Zentrum Dresden-Rossendorf and the HIgS facility at Triangle Universities Nuclear Laboratory Durham. The systematic study gained new information about the influence of the neutron excess as well as of nuclear deformation on the strength in the region of the pygmy dipole resonance. The results are compared with those obtained for the chain of molybdenum isotopes and with predictions of a random-phase approximation in a deformed basis. It turned out that the effect of nuclear deformation plays a minor role compared with the one caused by neutron excess. A global parametrization of the strength in terms of neutron and proton numbers allowed us to derive a formula capable of predicting the summed E1 strengths in the pygmy region for a wide mass range of nuclides.

This facility is optimized for the fast neutron energy range and combines an excellent time structure of the neutron pulses (electron bunch width 5 ps) with a short flight path of 7 m. Because of the low instantaneous neutron flux transmission measurements of neutron total cross sections are possible, that exhibit very different beam and background conditions than found at other neutron sources.

Abstract:
We study the boundedness problem for maximal operators $\M$ associated to smooth hypersurfaces $S$ in 3-dimensional Euclidean space. For $p>2,$ we prove that if no affine tangent plane to $S$ passes through the origin and $S$ is analytic, then the associated maximal operator is bounded on $L^p(\RR^3)$ if and only if $p>h(S),$ where $h(S)$ denotes the so-called height of the surface $S.$ For non-…

We study the boundedness problem for maximal operators $\M$ associated to smooth hypersurfaces $S$ in 3-dimensional Euclidean space. For $p>2,$ we prove that if no affine tangent plane to $S$ passes through the origin and $S$ is analytic, then the associated maximal operator is bounded on $L^p(\RR^3)$ if and only if $p>h(S),$ where $h(S)$ denotes the so-called height of the surface $S.$ For non-analytic finite type $S$ we obtain the same statement with the exception of the exponent $p=h(S).$ Our notion of height $h(S)$ is closely related to A. N. Varchenko's notion of height $h(φ)$ for functions $φ$ such that $S$ can be locally represented as the graph of $φ$ after a rotation of coordinates.
Several consequences of this result are discussed. In particular we verify a conjecture by E.M. Stein and its generalization by A. Iosevich and E. Sawyer on the connection between the decay rate of the Fourier transform of the surface measure on $S$ and the $L^p$-boundedness of the associated maximal operator $\M$, and a conjecture by Iosevich and Sawyer which relates the $L^p$-boundedness of $\M$ to an integrability condition on $S$ for the distance function to tangential hyperplanes, in dimension three.
In particular, we also give ess. sharp uniform estimates for the Fourier transform of the surface measure on $S,$ thus extending a result by V.N. Karpushkin from the analytic to the smooth setting and implicitly verifying a conjecture by V.I. Arnol'd in our context.

Abstract:
We study the boundedness problem for maximal operators in 3-dimensional Euclidean space associated to hypersurfaces given as the graph of $c+f$, where $f$ is a mixed homogeneous function which is smooth away from the origin and $c$ is a constant. Our result generalizes a corresponding theorem on mixed homogeneous polynomial functions by A. Iosevich and E. Sawyer.

We study two-photon excitation using biphotons generated via the process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a nonlinear crystal. We show that the focusing of these biphotons yields an excitation distribution that is essentially the same as the distribution of one-photon excitation at the pump wavelength. We also demonstrate that biphoton excitation in the image region yields a distribution whose axial width is approximately that of the crystal thickness and whose transverse width is that of the pump at the input to the crystal.
