At the FRS Ion Catcher (FRS-IC), projectile and fission fragments are produced at relativistic energies, separated in-flight, energy-bunched, slowed down, and thermalized in the ultra-pure helium gas-filled cryogenic stop** cell (CSC). Thermalized nuclei are extracted from the CSC using a combination of DC and RF electric fields and gas flow. This CSC also serves as the prototype CSC for the Super-FRS, where exotic nuclei will be produced at unprecedented rates making it possible to go towards the extremes of the nuclear chart. Therefore, it is essential to efficiently extract thermalized exotic nuclei from the CSC under high beam rate conditions, in order to use the rare exotic nuclei which come as cocktail beams. The extraction efficiency dependence on the intensity of the im**ing beam into the CSC was studied with a primary beam of 238U and its fragments. Tests were done with two different versions of the DC electrode structure inside the cryogenic chamber, the standard 1 m long and a short 0.5 m long DC electrode. In contrast to the rate capability of 10^4 ions/s with the long DC electrode, results show no extraction efficiency loss up to the rate of 2x10^5 ions/s with the new short DC electrode. This order of magnitude increase of the rate capability paves the way for new experiments at the FRS-IC, including exotic nuclei studies with in-cell multi-nucleon transfer reactions. The results further validate the design concept of the CSC for the Super-FRS, which was developed to effectively manage beams of even higher intensities.

We consider an oscillator model to describe qualitatively friction force for an atomic force mi-croscope (AFM) tip driven on a surface described by periodic potential. It is shown that average value of the friction force could be controlled by application of external time-dependent periodic perturbation. Numerical simulation demonstrates significant drop or increase of friction depending on amplitude and frequency of perturbation. Two different oscillating regimes are observed, they determined by frequency and amplitude of perturbation. The first one is regime of mode locking at frequencies multiple to driving frequency. It occurs close to resonance of harmonic perturbation and driving frequencies. Another regime of motion for a driven oscillator is characterized by aperiodic oscillations. It was observed in the numerical experiment for perturbations with large amplitudes and frequencies far from oscillator eigenfrequency. In this regime the oscillator does not follow external driving force, but rather oscillates at several modes which result from interaction of oscillator eigenmode and perturbation frequency.

In particular we obtain analytic expressions for the oscillation frequency and the decay time of the polarization fluctuation in terms of the material parameters. These estimations agree well with the experimental results.

We consider the propagation of extremely short pulses through a dielectric thin film containing resonant atoms (two level atoms) with permanent dipole. Assuming that the film width is less than the field wave length, we can solve the wave equation and reduce the problem to a system of generalized Bloch equations describing the resonant atoms. We compute the stationary solutions for a constant irradiation of the film. Superimposing a small amplitude linear wave we compute the reflection and transmission coefficients. From these, one can then deduce the different parameters of the model. We believe this technique could be used in experiments to obtain the medium atomic and relaxation parameters.

We consider the electromagnetic waves propagating in the system of coupled waveguides. One of the system components is a standard waveguide fabricated from nonlinear medium having positive refraction and another component is a waveguide produced from an artificial material having negative refraction. The metamaterial constituting the second waveguide has linear characteristics and a wave propagating in the waveguide of this type propagates in the direction opposite to direction of energy flux. It is found that the coupled nonlinear solitary waves propagating both in the same direction are exist in this oppositely-directed coupler due to linear coupling between nonlinear positive refractive waveguide and linear negative refractive waveguide. The corresponding analytical solution is found and it is used for numerical simulation to illustrate that the results of the solitary wave collisions are sensible to the relative velocity of the colliding solitary waves.

We consider the modes of the electric field of a cavity where there is an embedded polarized dielectric film. The model consists in the Maxwell equations coupled to a Duffing oscillator for the film which we assume infinitely thin. We derive the normal modes of the system and show that they are orthogonal with a special scalar product which we introduce. These modes are well suited to describe the system even for a film of finite thickness. By acting on the film we demonstrate switching from one cavity mode to another. Since the system is linear, little energy is needed for this conversion. Moreover the amplitude equations describe very well this complex system under different perturbations (dam**, forcing and nonlinearity) with very few modes. These results are very general and can be applied to different situations like for an atom in a cavity or a Josephson junction in a capacitor and this could be very useful for many nano-physics applications.

The nonlinear polariton transmission, reflection and trap** by a defect in the resonantly absorbing Bragg grating (RABG) is demonstrated in numerical simulation. It is shown that the wide defect under some conditions could effectively serve as microresonator for polaritonic wave storage. The three types of the defect such as microcavity, groove and stripe are considered. Capture the electromagnetic field inside the microcavity (with no resonant nanoparticles) placed in the RABG is observed, as well as stuck of trapped polarization modes to the defect edges for the groove (defect span with reduced density of nanoparticles) and for the stripe with relatively increased density. Strong radiation reflection and adhered propagation of the polarization mode along the first edge of the stripe with high density of resonant atoms is exhibited by numerical computation.

This dissipative soliton results from the balance between the gain from inverted resonant two-level atoms and the linear loss of the host material. Numerical simulations demonstrate the stability of these vector dissipative solitons in the presence of both linear birefringence and group velocity dispersion of the host material.

The propagation of extremely short pulses of electromagnetic field (electromagnetic spikes) is considered in the framework of a model where the material medium is represented by anharmonic oscillators with cubic nonlinearities (Duffing model) and waves can propagate only in the right direction. The system of reduced Maxwell-Duffing equations admits two families of exact analytical solutions in the form of solitary waves. These are bright spikes propagating on a zero background, and bright and dark spikes, propagating on a nonzero background. Direct simulations demonstrate that these pulses are very robust against perturbations. We find that a high frequency modulated electromagnetic pulse evolves into a breather-like one. Conversely a low frequency pulse transforms into a quasi-harmonic wave.

Propagation of extremely short unipolar pulses of electromagnetic field ("videopulses") is considered in the framework of a model in which the material medium is represented by anharmonic oscillators (approximating bound electrons) with quadratic and cubic nonlinearities. Two families of exact analytical solutions (with positive or negative polarity) are found for the moving solitary pulses. Direct simulations demonstrate that the pulses are very robust against perturbations. Two unipolar pulses collide nearly elastically, while collisions between pulses with opposite polarities and a small relative velocity are inelastic, leading to emission of radiation and generation of a small-amplitude additional pulse.
