Grain alignment is a key factor that determines the performance of a superconducting bulk. In this study, the spark plasma texturing (SPT) technique was used to fabricate a CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ superconducting bulk. X-ray diffraction and electron backscatter diffraction revealed that the $c$-axes of the CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ grains in the SPT bulk are aligned, demonstrating that the SPT technique is effective in achieving $c$-axis texture. In addition, chemical composition analysis showed that oxide impurities, which affect the grain boundary characteristics that determine the inter-grain critical current density ($J_c$), are randomly distributed in the SPT bulk. Magnetization measurements showed high $J_c$ values of the SPT bulk, reaching 127 kA cm$^{-2}$ and 26 kA cm$^{-2}$ at 4.2 K under a self-field and magnetic field of 5 T, respectively. These results suggest that the SPT technique is a promising approach for obtaining a high-performance superconducting bulk material for high-field applications.

A high density CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ bulk sample was successfully synthesized using a spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. The density of the synthesized sample was 5.02 g cm$^{-3}$, corresponding to 96.2% of the theoretical density of CaKFe$_4$As$_4$. Moreover, a reasonably high Vickers hardness of 1 GPa was measured. The electrical resistivity of the SPS bulk sample was as low as approximately 600 $μΩ$ cm at 300 K, which is smaller than that of the ordinary sintered polycrystalline sample by nearly one order of magnitude, and exhibited a sharp superconducting transition, with the transition width $Δ\textit{T}_c$ less than 2 K, indicating an improved grain connectivity. The critical current density of the SPS bulk sample, as calculated from the magnetization hysteresis loops (magnetic $\textit{J}_c$), reached 18 kA cm$^{-2}$ at 4.2 K under 5 T, which is the highest among the iron-based superconductor polycrystalline samples reported thus far.

The recent observation of unconventional superconductivity in thin films of LaNiO2 (critical temperature, Tc~10 K) and in bulk single crystals of La3Ni2O7 (327) under pressure (Tc~80 K), has brought to light a long sought-after class of superconducting nickelates. Through structural measurements in the 327-system, it was shown that the absence of superconductivity is related to bending of the O-Ni-O bonds. Similarly, the bond bending may be linked to the absence of superconductivity in bulk LaNiO2. Neutron diffraction was used on bulk non-superconducting La(1-x)Sr(x)NiO(2) samples to show that the layers are naturally buckled, creating a Ni-O-Ni bond angle of 177 at 2 K and ambient pressure. The buckling angle increases to 170 on warming to room temperature. Furthermore, a broad paramagnetic continuum is observed that decreases in intensity on cooling from room temperature signaling a possible transition to a coherent state. However, no antiferromagnetic (AFM) peaks are detected, although enhancement of ferromagnetic (FM) correlations cannot be excluded.

Soft robotics, with their inherent flexibility and infinite degrees of freedom (DoF), offer promising advancements in human-machine interfaces. Particularly, pneumatic artificial muscles (PAMs) and pneumatic bending actuators have been fundamental in driving this evolution, capitalizing on their mimetic nature to natural muscle movements. However, with the versatility of these actuators comes the intricate challenge of hysteresis - a nonlinear phenomenon that hampers precise positioning, especially pronounced in pneumatic actuators due to gas compressibility. In this study, we introduce a novel 2-DoF adaptive control for precise bending tracking using a pneumatic continuum actuator. Notably, our control method integrates adaptability into both the feedback and the feedforward element, enhancing trajectory tracking in the presence of profound nonlinear effects. Comparative analysis with existing approaches underscores the superior tracking accuracy of our proposed strategy. This work discusses a new way of simple yet effective control designs for soft actuators with hysteresis properties.

In this study, we conducted experiments on CaC6 for elucidating the Na-catalyzed formation mechanism and achieving rapid mass synthesis of graphite intercalation compounds (GICs). Rapidly synthesized CaC6 was characterized by analysis of its crystal structure and physical properties. We found that the formation of the reaction intermediate Na-GIC (NaCx, x = 64) requires a larger amount of Na than is intercalated between the graphite interlayers. The requirement for excess Na may provide insights into the mechanism of Na-catalyzed GIC formation. A Na-to-C molar mixing ratio of 1.5-2.0:6 was suitable for the efficient formation of CaC6 under heat treatment at 250°C for 2 h, and the catalytic Na remaining in the sample was demonstrably reduced to a Na:Ca ratio of approximately 3:97. The upper critical field Hc2 was enhanced approximately three times compared to those of previous reports. Based on X-ray diffraction and experimental parameter analysis, we concluded that the enhancement of Hc2 was attributed to the disordered stacking sequence in CaC6, possibly because of the rapid and low-temperature formation. Physical properties derived from specific heat measurements were comparable to those of high-quality CaC6, which is slowly synthesized using the molten Li-Ca alloy method. This study provides new avenues for future research and exploration in the rapid mass synthesis of GICs as practical materials, for applications such as battery electrodes and superconducting wires.

Soft robotics is a swiftly evolving field. Pneumatic actuators are suitable for driving soft robots because of their superior performance. However, their control is challenging due to the hysteresis characteristics. In response to this challenge, we propose an adaptive control method to compensate for the hysteresis of soft actuators. Employing a novel dual pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) bending actuator, the innovative control approach abates hysteresis effects by dynamically modulating gains within a traditional PID controller corresponding to the predicted variation of the reference trajectory. Through experimental evaluation, we found that the proposed control method outperforms its conventional counterparts regarding tracking accuracy and response speed. Our work reveals a new direction for advancing model-free control in soft actuators.

Accurate extraction of mitral valve shape from clinical tomographic images acquired in patients has proven useful for planning surgical and interventional mitral valve treatments. However, manual extraction of the mitral valve shape is laborious, and the existing automatic extraction methods have not been sufficiently accurate. In this paper, we propose a fully automated method of extracting mitral valve shape from computed tomography (CT) images for the all phases of the cardiac cycle. This method extracts the mitral valve shape based on DenseNet using both the original CT image and the existence probability maps of the mitral valve area inferred by U-Net as input. A total of 1585 CT images from 204 patients with various cardiac diseases including mitral regurgitation (MR) were collected and manually annotated for mitral valve region. The proposed method was trained and evaluated by 10-fold cross validation using the collected data and was compared with the method without the existence probability maps. The mean error of shape extraction error in the proposed method is 0.88 mm, which is an improvement of 0.32 mm compared with the method without the existence probability maps.

The Pd-rich samples (0 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.2) had the same non-centrosymmetric (NCS) tetragonal structure (a space group of $I41md$) as SrPd$_{3}$P. For the samples with 0.3 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 0.7, a centrosymmetric (CS) tetragonal structure ($P4/nmm$) identical to that of SrPt$_{3}$P was found to appear, accompanied by superconductivity at a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) up to 3.7 K. In the samples synthesized with Pt-rich nominal compositions (0.8 $\leq$ x $\leq$ 1.0), Sr$_{2}$(Pd,Pt)$_{8-y}$As$_{1+y}$ with an intergrowth structure (CS-orthorhombic with Cmcm) was crystallized. The phase diagram obtained for Sr(Pd,Pt)$_{3}$As was analogous to that of (Ca,Sr)Pd$_{3}$P in that superconductivity ($T_\mathrm{c}$ $\geq$ 2 K) occurred in the CS phases induced by substitutions to the NCS phases. This study indicates the potential for further material variation expansion and the importance of elemental substitutions to reveal hidden phases in related antiperovskites.

We successfully synthesized BaIr2, the last Laves phase remaining unsynthesized in the MgCu2-type AM2 (A = Ca, Sr, Ba; M = Rh, Pd, Ir, Pt). BaIr2 was crystallized at 925 C under a pressure of 3.3 GPa via a solid-state reaction between Ba and Ir powders; it was found to have the longest a-lattice constant of 8.038(1) A among AM2. BaIr2 exhibited bulk superconductivity at a transition temperature (Tc) of 2.7 K. BaIr2 was found to have a type-II superconductor with an upper critical field of 67.7 kOe, which was above the Pauli paramagnetic limit (50 kOe). The electron-phonon coupling constant and normalized specific heat jump were measured to be 0.63 and 1.2, respectively, indicating that BaIr2 is a weak-coupling superconductor. The electronic-structure calculations for BaIr2 revealed that the Ir-5d states are dominant at the Fermi energy (EF) and the density of states at the EF is strongly affected by SOI as in the case of CaIr2 and SrIr2.

We report the effects of low-temperature postannealing on the structural and superconducting properties of the recently discovered Ca-free double-layered cuprate, Sr$_2$SrCu$_2$O$_{4+y}$F$_{2-y}$. Although the as-synthesized sample prepared under high pressure has a tetragonal structure with a rock-salt-type blocking layer (the so-called $T$-phase), we found that the symmetry of the structure lowered to that of an orthorhombic system when annealed with CuF$_2$. The structural refinements reveal that such a topochemical reaction leads not only to the removal of excess O$^{2-}$ from the apical site but also to the intercalation of extra F$^-$ into the interstitial site. The orthorhombic phase exhibits bulk superconductivity at a critical temperature of 107 K, which is significantly higher than that of the $T$-phase ($\sim$50 K). Meanwhile, the $T$-phase turns into another structure possessing a fluorite-type blocking layer without apical fluorine (known as the $T^\prime$-phase) by annealing without CuF$_2$. Density functional theory calculations show that the $T^\prime$-phase is more stable than the $T$-phase. This is the first report on the formation of a $T^\prime$-type double-layered cuprate. Furthermore, the structural stability of the three phases of Sr$_2$SrCu$_2$O$_{4+y}$F$_{2-y}$ is discussed in terms of lattice matching between the blocking and conducting layers.

While $A$Pd$_{3}$P and (Ca,Sr)Pd$_{3}$P were found to be tetragonal or orthorhombic systems, LaPd$_{3}$P is a new prototype cubic system ($a$ = 9.0317(1) A) with a noncentrosymmetric space group ($I-43m$). LaPd$_{3}$P exhibited superconductivity with a transition temperature ($T_\mathrm{c}$) of 0.28 K. The upper critical field, Debye temperature, and Sommerfeld constant ($γ$) were determined as 0.305(8) kOe, 267(1) K, 6.06(4) mJ mol-1 K-2 f.u.-1, respectively. We performed first-principles electronic band structure calculations for LaPd$_{3}$P and compared the theoretical and experimental results. The calculated Sommerfeld constant (2.24 mJ mol-1 K-2 f.u.-1) was much smaller than the experimental value of $γ$ because the Fermi energy ($E_\mathrm{F}$) was located slightly below the density of states (DOS) pseudogap. This difference was explained by the increase in the DOS at $E_\mathrm{F}$ due to the approximately 5 at.% La deficiency (hole do**) in the sample. The observed Tc value was much lower than that estimated using the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer equation. To explain the discrepancy, we examined the possibility of an unconventional superconductivity in LaPd$_{3}$P arising from the lack of space inversion symmetry.

Magnetic superconductors are specific materials exhibiting two antagonistic phenomena, superconductivity and magnetism, whose mutual interaction induces various emergent phenomena, such as the reentrant superconducting transition associated with the suppression of superconductivity around the magnetic transition temperature (Tm), highlighting the impact of magnetism on superconductivity. In this study, we report the experimental observation of the ferromagnetic order induced by superconducting vortices in the high-critical-temperature (high-Tc) magnetic superconductor EuRbFe4As4. Although the ground state of the Eu2+ moments in EuRbFe4As4 is helimagnetism below Tm, neutron diffraction and magnetization experiments show a ferromagnetic hysteresis of the Eu2+ spin alignment. We demonstrate that the direction of the Eu2+ moments is dominated by the distribution of pinned vortices based on the critical state model. Moreover, we demonstrate the manipulation of spin texture by controlling the direction of superconducting vortices, which can help realize spin manipulation devices using magnetic superconductors.

In the recently discovered antiperovskite phosphide (Ca,Sr)Pd$_3$P, centrosymmetric (CS) and non-centrosymmetric (NCS) superconducting phases appear depending on the Sr concentration, and their transition temperatures ($T_\mathrm{c}$) differ by as much as one order of magnitude. In this study, we investigated the superconducting properties and electronic band structures of CS orthorhombic (CSo) (Ca$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$)Pd$_3$P ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 3.5 K) and NCS tetragonal (NCSt) (Ca$_{0.25}$Sr$_{0.75}$)Pd$_3$P ($T_\mathrm{c}$ = 0.32 K) samples with a focus on explaining their large $T_\mathrm{c}$ difference. Specific heat measurements indicated that CSo (Ca$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$)Pd$_3$P was an s-wave superconductor in a moderate-coupling regime with a 2$Δ$$_0$/k$_B$$T_\mathrm{c}$ value of 4.0. Low-lying phonons leading to the strong coupling in the structurally analogous SrPt$_3$P were unlikely to be present in CSo (Ca$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$)Pd$_3$P. Given that CSo (Ca$_{0.6}$Sr$_{0.4}$)Pd$_3$P and NCSt (Ca$_{0.25}$Sr$_{0.75}$)Pd$_3$P exhibited similar Debye temperatures ($Θ$$_D$) of approximately 200 K, the large $T_\mathrm{c}$ difference could not be attributed to $Θ$$_D$.$T_\mathrm{c}$ of each phase was accurately reproduced based on the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) theory using experimental data and the density of states of the Fermi level $N$(0) calculated from their band structures. We concluded that the considerable suppression of $T_\mathrm{c}$ in NCSt (Ca$_{0.25}$Sr$_{0.75}$)Pd$_3$P can be primarily attributed to the decrease in $N$(0) associated with the structural phase transition without considering the lack of inversion symmetry.

This phenomenon is caused by a system that facilitates the connection of people with similar ideas and recommendation systems. Bias in the selection of information sources promotes polarization that divides people into multiple groups with opposing views and creates conflicts between opposing groups. This paper elucidates the mechanism of polarization by proposing a model of opinion formation in social media that considers users' reactions of empathy and repulsion. Based on the idea that opinion neutrality is only relative, this model offers a novel technology for dealing with polarization.

It is generally difficult to quantify the amounts of light elements in materials because of their low X-ray-scattering power, as this means that they cannot be easily estimated via X-ray analyses. Meanwhile, the recently reported layered superconductor, Sc$_{20}$C$_{8-x}$B$_x$C$_{20}$, requires a small amount of boron, which is a light element, for its structural stability. In this context, here, we quantitatively evaluate the optimal $x$ value using both the experimental and computational approaches. Using the high-pressure synthesis approach that can maintain the starting composition even after sintering, we obtain the Sc$_{20}$(C,B)$_{8}$C$_{20}$ phase by the reaction of the previously reported Sc$_{15}$C$_{19}$ and B (Sc$_{15}$B$_y$C$_{19}$). Our experiments demonstrate that an increase in $y$ values promotes the phase formation of the Sc$_{20}$(C,B)$_{8}$C$_{20}$ structure; however, there appears to be an upper limit to the nominal $y$ value to form this phase. The maximum $T_\mathrm{c}$ $(=7.6\text{ K})$ is found to correspond with the actual $x$ value of $x \sim 5$ under the assumption that the sample with the same $T_\mathrm{c}$ as the reported value $(=7.7\text{ K})$ possesses the optimal $x$ amount. Moreover, we construct the energy convex hull diagram by calculating the formation enthalpy based on first principles. Our computational results indicate that the composition of Sc$_{20}$C$_4$B$_4$C$_{20}$ $(x=4)$ is the most thermodynamically stable, which is reasonably consistent with the experimentally obtained value.

In this study, we succeeded in synthesizing new antiperovskite phosphides $M$Pd$_3$P ($M$ = Ca, Sr, Ba) and discovered the appearance of a superconducting phase (0.17 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 0.55) in a solid solution (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P. Three perovskite-related crystal structures were identified in (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P and a phase diagram was built on the basis of experimental results. The first phase transition from centrosymmetric ($Pnma$) to non-centrosymmetric orthorhombic ($Aba$2) occurred in CaPd$_3$P near room temperature. The phase transition temperature decreased as Ca$^{2+}$ was replaced with a larger-sized isovalent Sr$^{2+}$. Bulk superconductivity at a critical temperature ($T$$_c$) of approximately 3.5 K was observed in a range of $x$ = 0.17 - 0.55; this was associated with the centrosymmetric orthorhombic phase. Thereafter, a non-centrosymmetric tetragonal phase ($I$41$md$) remained stable for 0.6 $\leq$ $x$ $\leq$ 1.0, and superconductivity was significantly suppressed as samples with $x$ = 0.75 and 1.0 showed ($T$$_c$) values as low as 0.32 K and 57 mK, respectively. For further substitution with a larger-sized isovalent Ba$^{2+}$, namely (Sr$_{1-y}$Ba$_y$)Pd$_3$P, the tetragonal phase continued throughout the composition range. BaPd$_3$P no longer showed superconductivity down to 20 mK. Since the inversion symmetry of structure and superconductivity can be precisely controlled in (Ca$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$)Pd$_3$P, this material may offer a unique opportunity to study the relationship between inversion symmetry and superconductivity.

The discovery of nearly room-temperature superconductivity in superhydrides has motivated further materials research for conventional superconductors. To realize the moderately high critical temperature $(T_\mathrm{c})$ in materials containing light elements, we explored new superconducting phases in a scandium borocarbide system. Here, we report the observation of superconductivity in a new ternary Sc-B-C compound. The crystal structure, which was determined through a Rietveld analysis, belongs to tetragonal space group $P4/ncc$. By complementarily using the density functional theory calculations, a chemical formula of the compound was found to be expressed as Sc$_{20}$C$_{8-x}$B$_x$C$_{20}$($x=1\:\mathrm{or}\:2$). Interestingly, a small amount of B is essential to stabilize the present structure. Our experiments revealed the typical type-II superconductivity at $T_\mathrm{c}=7.7\:\mathrm{K}$. Additionally, we calculated the density of states within a first-principles approach and found that the contribution of the Sc-3d orbital was mainly responsible for the superconductivity.

The search for non-centrosymmetric superconductors that may exhibit unusual physical properties and unconventional superconductivity has yielded the synthesis of a non-centrosymmetric phosphide Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P with an Al$_2$Mo$_3$C-type structure. Although stoichiometric Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P does not exhibit superconductivity at temperatures above 2 K, we found that an Mg deficiency of approximately 5 at.% in the Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P induced superconductivity at 3.9 K. Physical properties such as the lattice parameter a = 0.70881 nm, Sommerfeld constant $γ_n$ = 5.36 mJ mol$^{-1}$ K$^{-2}$, specific heat jump $Δ$C$_{el}$/$γ_n$Tc = 0.72, electron-phonon coupling constant $λ$$_{e-p}$ = 0.58, upper critical field H$_{c2}$(0) = 24.3 kOe, and pressure effect dTc/dP = -0.34 K/GPa were measured for the superconducting Mg$_{2-δ}$Rh$_3$P ($δ$ $\sim$ 0.1). Band-structure calculations indicate that exotic fermions, which are not present in high-energy physics, exist in Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P. Since Mg, Rh, and P are the first elements used at each crystal site of Al$_2$Mo$_3$C-type compounds, the discovery of Mg$_2$Rh$_3$P may guide the search for new related materials.

Their superconducting (SC) phases are characterized by unconventional multi-gap SC state, where the smaller SC gaps are particularly weaken in common. The experimental results indicate the close relationship between the AFMSFs and the SC from the hole-doped state to heavily electron-doped state, which shed light on a unique SC phase emerged in the heavily electron-doped regime being formally equivalent to non-SC compound Ba(Fe0.5Co0.5)Fe2As2.

The lossless current-carrying capacity of a superconductor is limited by its critical current density (Jc). A key to enhance Jc towards real-life applications is engineering defect structures to optimize the pinning landscape. For iron-based superconductors (IBSs) considered as candidate materials for high-field applications, high Jc values have been achieved by various techniques to introduce artificial pinning centres. Here we report extraordinary vortex pinning properties in CaKFe4As4 (CaK1144) arising from the inherent defect structure. Scanning transmission electron microscopy revealed the existence of nanoscale intergrowths of the CaFe2As2 phase, which is unique to CaK1144 formed as a line compound. The Jc properties in CaK1144 are found to be distinct from other IBSs characterized by a significant anisotropy with respect to the magnetic field orientation as well as a remarkable pinning mechanism significantly enhanced with increasing temperature. We propose a comprehensive explanation of the Jc properties based on the unique intergrowths acting as pinning centres.

Magnetic excitations and magnetic structure of EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ were investigated by inelastic neutron scattering (INS), neutron diffraction, and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Below the superconducting transition temperature $T_\text{c}=36.5$~K, the INS spectra exhibit the neutron spin resonances at $Q_\text{res}=1.27(2)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$ and $1.79(3)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$. They correspond to the $\mathbf{Q}=(0.5,0.5,1)$ and $(0.5,0.5,3)$ nesting wave vectors, showing three dimensional nature of the band structure. The characteristic energy of the neutron spin resonance is $E_\text{res}=17.7(3)$~meV corresponding to $5.7(1)k_\text{B}T_\text{c}$. Observation of the neutron spin resonance mode and our RPA calculations in conjunction with the recent optical conductivity measurements are indicative of the $s_\pm$ superconducting pairing symmetry in EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$. In addition to the neutron spin resonance mode, upon decreasing temperature below the magnetic transition temperature $T_\text{N}=15$~K, the spin wave excitation originating in the long-range magnetic order of the Eu sublattice was observed in the low-energy inelastic channel. Single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements demonstrate that the magnetic propagation vector of the Eu sublattice is $\mathbf{k}=(0, 0, 0.25)$, representing the three-dimensional antiferromagnetic order. Linear spin wave calculations assuming the obtained magnetic structure with the intra- and inter-plane nearest neighbor exchange couplings of $J_1/k_\text{B}=-1.31$~K and $J_c/k_\text{B}=0.08$~K can reproduce quantitatively the observed spin wave excitation. Our results show that superconductivity and long-range magnetic order of Eu coexist in EuRbFe$_4$As$_4$ whereas the coupling between them is rather weak.

The dynamical spin susceptibility in the new-structure-type iron-based superconductor CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ was investigated by using a combination of inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements and random phase approximation (RPA) calculations. Powder INS measurements show that the spin resonance at $Q_\text{res}=1.17(1)$~$\textÅ^{-1}$, corresponding to the $(π,π)$ nesting wave vector in tetragonal notation, evolves below $T_\text{c}$. The characteristic energy of the spin resonance $E_\text{res}=12.5$~meV is smaller than twice the size of the superconducting gap ($2Δ$). The broad energy feature of the dynamical susceptibility of the spin resonance can be explained by the RPA calculations, in which the different superconducting gaps on different Fermi surfaces are taken into account. Our INS and PRA studies demonstrate that the superconducting pairing nature in CaKFe$_4$As$_4$ is the $s_\pm$ symmetry.

A newly discovered family of high-Tc Fe-based superconductors, AeAFe4As4 (Ae = Ca, Sr, Eu and A = K, Rb, Cs), offers further opportunities to understand unconventional superconductivity in these materials. In this Rapid Communication, we report on the superconducting and magnetic properties of CaKFe4As4, studied using muon spectroscopy. Zero-field muon spin relaxation studies carried out on the CaKFe4As4 superconductor do not show any detectable magnetic anomaly at Tc or below, implying that time-reversal symmetry is preserved in the superconducting ground state. The temperature dependence of the superfluid density of CaKFe4As4 is found to be compatible with a two-gap s + s-wave model with gap values of 8.6(4) and 2.5(3) meV, similar to the other Fe-based superconductors. The presence of two superconducting energy gaps is consistent with theoretical and other experimental studies on this material. The value of the penetration depth at T = 0 K has been determined as 289(22) nm.

The interrelation between the epitaxial strain and oxygen deficiency in La0.7Ca0.3MnO3-δ thin films was studied in terms of structural and functional properties. The films with a thickness of 1000Å were prepared using a PLD system equipped with a RHEED facility and a pyrometric film temperature control. The epitaxial strain and the oxygen deficiency in the samples were systematically modified using three different substrates: SrTiO3, (LaAlO3)0.3-(Sr2AlTaO6)0.7 and LaSrAlO4, and four different oxygen pressures during film growth ranging from 0.27mbar to 0.1mbar. It could be demonstrated that the oxygen incorporation depends on the epitaxial strain: oxygen vacancies were induced to accommodate tensile strain whereas the compressive strain suppressed the generation of oxygen vacancies.

These results contradict previous observations where in sputtered bilayer samples only a transient photoconductivity (TPC) was found. We argue that the PPC effect in superlattices is caused by the PPC effect due to the YBa2Cu3O7-x layers with limited charge transfer to La2/3Ca1/3MnO3-y. The discrepancy arises from the different permeability of charges across the interface and shed light on the sensitivity of oxide interface properties on details of their preparation.

We report the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements for non-centrosymmetric superconductors Re7B3, LaBiPt, and BiPd containing heavy elements. For all three compounds, the spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 shows a coherence peak just below Tc and decreases exponentially at low temperatures, which indicates that an isotropic superconducting gap is dominant in these compounds. In BiPd, the height of the coherence peak just below Tc is much suppressed, which suggests that there exists a substantial component of gap with nodes in this compound. Our results indicate that heavy element is not the only factor, but the extent of inversion symmetry breaking is also important to induce a large spin-orbit coupling and an unconventional superconducting state.

The electron-phonon interaction is of central importance for the electrical and thermal properties of solids, and its influence on superconductivity, colossal magnetoresistance, and other many-body phenomena in correlated-electron materials is currently the subject of intense research. However, the non-local nature of the interactions between valence electrons and lattice ions, often compounded by a plethora of vibrational modes, present formidable challenges for attempts to experimentally control and theoretically describe the physical properties of complex materials. Here we report a Raman scattering study of the lattice dynamics in superlattices of the high-temperature superconductor $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ and the colossal-magnetoresistance compound $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ that suggests a new approach to this problem. We find that a rotational mode of the MnO$_6$ octahedra in $\bf La_{2/3}Ca_{1/3}MnO_{3}$ experiences pronounced superconductivity-induced lineshape anomalies, which scale linearly with the thickness of the $\bf YBa_2 Cu_3 O_7$ layers over a remarkably long range of several tens of nanometers. The transfer of the electron-phonon coupling between superlattice layers can be understood as a consequence of long-range Coulomb forces in conjunction with an orbital reconstruction at the interface. The superlattice geometry thus provides new opportunities for controlled modification of the electron-phonon interaction in complex materials.

Simple extensions of the model to the neutrino sector suggest an inverted hierarchical mass spectrum with nearly maximal CP violation (|delta_{MNS}| simeq pi/2). Besides reducing the number of parameters in the fermion sector, these models also provide solutions to the SUSY flavor problem and the SUSY CP problem. We construct a renormalizable scalar potential that leads to the spontaneous breaking of CP symmetry and the family symmetry.

The new contribution to the non-diagonal matrix element M_12 of the neutral B_s meson system is investigated in a supersymmetric extension of the standard model based on the discrete Q6 family symmetry. We assume that CP is explicitly, but softly broken only by the b terms in the soft supersymmetry breaking sector. We find that the new contributions to M_12 are real, and that nevertheless there exists an observable difference in the CP phase compared with the standard model. We focus our attention on the flavor-specific CP asymmetry a_fs^s, and find that a_fs^s of the model is mostly negative and its size can be one order of magnitude larger the standard model value. This prediction is consistent with the current experimental value, and can be experimentally tested in the near future.

Density of the polyacrylamide ultrathin films has been studied using X-ray reflectivity technique. Two sources (one powder and another aqueous solution) of polyacrylamide were used to prepare spin coated films on silicon substrate. Light scattering measurements show that the polymer chains were unentangled in a concentrated (4 mg/ml) as well as in a dilute (2 mg/ml) solution prepared from the powder, whereas the solution (4 mg/ml) prepared by diluting the solution source shows entangled chain morphology. Three sets of films of different thicknesses were prepared using the three solutions by spin coating on silicon substrates. Comparison of X-ray reflectivity data for as prepared and dry films reveals that the shrinkage of the films decreases with increasing thickness. Average electron densities of the films were found to follow a trend of higher density for thinner films with a maximum increase of about 12% compared to the bulk. The densities of all the films irrespective of the nature of entanglement and concentration of their source were found to increase with spin speed of coating and attain saturation at higher speed. Absence of correlation between shrinkage and density data and the fact that the densities of all the films follow a master curve irrespective of their origin suggest that the higher density of the films result from the higher orientation of chains as a consequence of an interplay between stretching and stronger attractive interactions of polar nature.

The Hard X-ray Detector (HXD) on board Suzaku covers a wide energy range from 10 keV to 600 keV by combination of silicon PIN diodes and GSO scintillators. The HXD is designed to achieve an extremely low in-orbit back ground based on a combination of new techniques, including the concept of well-type active shield counter. With an effective area of 142 cm^2 at 20 keV and 273 cm2 at 150 keV, the background level at the sea level reached ~1x10^{-5} cts s^{-1} cm^{-2} keV^{-1} at 30 keV for the PI N diodes, and ~2x10^{-5} cts s^{-1} cm^{-2} keV^{-1} at 100 keV, and ~7x10^{-6} cts s^{-1} cm^{-2} keV^{-1} at 200 keV for the phoswich counter. Tight active shielding of the HXD results in a large array of guard counters surrounding the main detector parts. These anti-coincidence counters, made of ~4 cm thick BGO crystals, have a large effective area for sub-MeV to MeV gamma-rays. They work as an excellent gamma-ray burst monitor with limited angular resolution (~5 degree). The on-board signal-processing system and the data transmitted to the ground are also described.

We have investigated the magnetism and the superconductivity of an electron-doped Pr$_{1-x}$LaCe$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ (PLCCO) using single crystal and powder samples by means of zero-field muon spin rotation/relaxation (ZF-$μ$SR) and magnetic susceptibility measurements. Muon spin rotation corresponding to antiferromagnetic (AF) order was observed in the sample with 0.04$\leq${\it x}$\leq$0.11. Changes in magnetic properties of Cu spins upon Ce do** were revealed because the effect of the rare earth moment was negligible. Bulk superconductivity was identified in a wide Ce concentration range of 0.09$\leq${\it x}$\leq$0.20 with a maximum transition temperature of 26 K. At low temperatures, the superconducting (SC) phase abruptly appears by do** with linking quick destroy of the AF ordered phase at {\it x}$\sim$0.09, indicating the competitive relation between two phases.
