The boundary conditions at $x=\ell$ correspond to linear combinations of dam** moments caused by rotation and angular velocity and also, of forces caused by displacement and velocity, respectively. The system stability analysis based on well-known Lyapunov approach is developed. Under the natural assumptions guaranteeing the existence of a regular weak solution, uniform exponential decay estimate for the energy of the system is derived. The decay rate constant in this estimate depends only on the physical and geometric parameters of the beam, including the viscous external dam** coefficient $μ(x) \ge 0$, and the boundary springs $k_r,k_d \ge 0$ and dampers $k_a,k_v \ge 0$. Some numerical examples are given to illustrate the role of the dam** coefficient and the boundary dampers.

Abstract:
In this paper, a dynamic model of reconstruction of the shear force $g(t)$ in the Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) cantilever tip-sample interaction is proposed. The interaction of the cone-shaped cantilever tip with the surface of the specimen (sample) is modeled by the damped Euler-Bernoulli beam equation $ρ_A(x)u_{tt}$ $+μ(x)u_{t}+(r(x)u_{xx}+κ(x)u_{xxt})_{xx}=0$, $(x,t)\in (0,\ell)\times (0,T)$,…

The interaction of the cone-shaped cantilever tip with the surface of the specimen (sample) is modeled by the damped Euler-Bernoulli beam equation $ρ_A(x)u_{tt}$ $+μ(x)u_{t}+(r(x)u_{xx}+κ(x)u_{xxt})_{xx}=0$, $(x,t)\in (0,\ell)\times (0,T)$, subject to the following initial, $u(x,0)=0$, $u_t(x,0)=0$ and boundary, $u(0,t)=0$, $u_{x}(0,t)=0$, $\left (r(x)u_{xx}(x,t)+κ(x)u_{xxt} \right )_{x=\ell}=M(t)$, $\left (-(r(x)u_{xx}+κ(x)u_{xxt})_x\right )_{x=\ell}=g(t)$ conditions, where $M(t):=2h\cos θ\,g(t)/π$ is the momentum generated by the transverse shear force $g(t)$. For the reconstruction of $g(t)$ the measured displacement $ν(t):=u(\ell,t)$ is used as an additional data. The least square functional $J(F)=\frac{1}{2}\Vert u(\ell,\cdot)-ν\Vert_{L^2(0,T)}^2$ is introduced and an explicit gradient formula for the Fréchet derivative through the solution of the adjoint problem is derived. This allows to construct a gradient based numerical algorithm for the reconstructions of the shear force from noise free as well as from random noisy measured output $ν(t)$. Computational experiments show that the proposed algorithm is very fast and robust. This allows to develop a numerical "gadget" for computational experiments of generic AFMs.

Coherent photoproduction of the neutral pion and eta meson on the deuteron, $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section demonstrates a rapid rise below 1 GeV. The data are underestimated by the existing theoretical calculations based on quasi-free $π^0 η$ photoproduction on the nucleon followed by deuteron coalescence. At the same time, the data are rather well reproduced by the calculations taking into account the final-state interaction. We have also measured for the first time the differential cross sections: the $π^0 η$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πη}$, the $π^0 d$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{πd}$, the $ηd$ invariant-mass distribution $dσ/dM_{ηd}$, and the distribution over the deuteron emission angle $dσ/dΩ_d$ in the overall center-of-mass frame. The measured cross section $dσ/dΩ_d$ does not exhibit strongly backward-peaking behavior predicted by the calculations. At all incident energies, an increase in $dσ/dM_{ηd}$ near the $ηd$ threshold is observed, which indicates a bound or virtual $ηd$ state resulting from a strong attraction between $η$ and a deuteron. The possibilities of using coherent $π^0η$ photoproduction on a nucleus to study the $η$-nuclear interaction are also discussed.

To investigate the interaction between the nucleon $N$ and nucleon resonance $N(1535)1/2^-$, the $ηd$ threshold structure connected to the isoscalar $S$-wave $N$-$N(1535)1/2^-$ system has been experimentally studied in the $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0η{d}$ reaction at incident photon energies ranging from the reaction threshold to 1.15 GeV. A strong enhancement is observed near the $ηd$ threshold over the three-body phase-space contribution in the $ηd$ invariant-mass distribution. An analysis incorporating the known isovector resonance $\mathcal{D}_{12}$ with a spin-parity of $2^+$ in the $π^0d$ channel reveals the existence of a narrow isoscalar resonance-like structure with $1^-$ in the $ηd$ system. Using a Flatté parametrization, the mass is found to be $2.427_{-0.006}^{+0.013}$ GeV, close to the $ηd$ threshold, and the width is $\left(0.029_{-0.029}^{+0.006}{\rm\ GeV}\right)+\left(0.00_{-0.00}^{+0.41}\right) p_ηc$, where $p_η$ denotes the $η$ momentum in the rest frame of the $ηd$ system. The observed structure would be attributed to a predicted isoscalar $1^-$ $ηNN$ bound state from $ηNN$ and $πNN$ coupled-channel calculation, or an $ηd$ virtual state owing to strong $ηd$ attraction.

Using this result we prove a unique continuation property for the wave equation.

We consider the inverse problem of localizing a prey hitting a spider orb-web from dynamic measurements taken near the center of the web, where the spider is supposed to stay. The actual discrete orb-web, formed by a finite number of radial and circumferential threads, is modelled as a continuous membrane. The membrane has a specific fibrous structure, which is inherited from the original discrete web, and it is subject to tensile pre-stress in the referential configuration. The transverse load describing the prey's impact is assumed of the form $g(t)f(x)$, where $g(t)$ is a known function of time and $f(x)$ is the unknown term depending on the position variable $x$. For axially-symmetric orb-webs supported at the boundary and undergoing infinitesimal transverse deformations, we prove a uniqueness result for $f(x)$ in terms of measurements of the transverse dynamic displacement taken on an arbitrarily small and thin ring centered at the origin of the web, for a sufficiently large interval of time.

The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length $a_{ωp}$ and effective range $r_{ωp}$ between the $ω$ meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: $a_{ωp} = \left(-0.97^{+0.16_{\rm stat}}_{-0.16_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.03_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)+i \left(0.07^{+0.15_{\rm stat}}_{-0.14_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.17_{\rm syst}}_{-0.09_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm and $r_{ωp}=\left(+2.78^{+0.68_{\rm stat}}_{-0.54_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.11_{\rm syst}}_{-0.13_{\rm syst}}\right)+i\left(-0.01^{+0.46_{\rm stat}}_{-0.50_{\rm stat}}{}^{+0.07_{\rm syst}}_{-0.00_{\rm syst}}\right)$ fm, resulting in a repulsive force. The real and imaginary parts for $a_{ωp}$ and $r_{ωp}$ are determined separately for the first time. A small $P$-wave contribution does not affect the obtained values.

Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, $γ{d}${$\to$}$π^0π^0{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the $γ{d}$ center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free $π^0π^0$ production with deuteron coalescence. In $π^0d $ invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at $2.14{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$ with a width of $0.09{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$. The spin-parity of this state is restricted to $1^+$, $2^+$ or $3^-$ from the angular distributions of the two $π^0$s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV$/c^2$. The $2^+$ assignment is consistent with the theoretically predicted ${\cal{D}}_{12}$ state, and also with the energy dependence of the $π{d}$ partial-wave amplitude $^3\!P_2$ for the $π^{\pm}d${$\to$}$π^{\pm}d$ and $π^+d${$\to$}${pp}$ reactions.

It is found that the missing-mass consistency cut and the pion-energy cut are essential for the event mixing method to effectively extract BEC observables. A Monte Carlo (MC) simulation is used to validate these constraints and confirms the efficiency of this method. Our work paves the way for similar BEC studies at lower energies where the multiplicity of emitted bosons is limited.

A new PLIC (piecewise linear interface calculation)-type VOF (volume of fluid) method, called APPLIC (approximated PLIC) method, is presented. Although the PLIC method is one of the most accurate VOF methods, the three-dimensional algorithm is complex. Accordingly, it is hard to develop and maintain the computational code. The APPLIC method reduces the complexity using simple approximation formulae. Three numerical tests were performed to compare the accuracy of the SVOF (simplified volume of fluid), VOF/WLIC (weighed line interface calculation), THINC/SW (tangent of hyperbola for interface capturing/slope weighting), THINC/WLIC, PLIC, and APPLIC methods. The results of the tests show that the APPLIC results are as accurate as the PLIC results and are more accurate than the SVOF, VOF/WLIC, THINC/SW, and THINC/WLIC results. It was demonstrated that the APPLIC method is more computationally efficient than the PLIC method.

We performed molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of the nucleation of water vapor in order to test nucleation theories. Simulations were performed for a wide range of supersaturation ratios (S = 3-25) and water temperatures (Tw=300-390K). We obtained the nucleation rates and the formation free energies of a subcritical cluster from the cluster size distribution. The classical nucleation theory (CNT) and the modified classical nucleation theory (MCNT) overestimate the nucleation rates in all cases. The semi-phenomenological (SP) model, which corrects the MCNT prediction using the second virial coefficient of a vapor, reproduces the formation free energy of a cluster with the size < 20 to within 10 % and the nucleation rate and cluster size distributions to within one order of magnitude. The sticking probability of the vapor molecules to the clusters was also determined from the growth rates of the clusters. The sticking probability rapidly increases with the supersaturation ratio S, which is similar to the Lennard-Jones system.

A novel, particle based, probabilistic approach for the simulation of cloud microphysics is proposed, which is named the Super-Droplet Method (SDM). This method enables accurate simulation of cloud microphysics with less demanding cost in computation. SDM is applied to a warm-cloud system, which incorporates sedimentation, condensation/evaporation, and stochastic coalescence. The methodology to couple super-droplets and a non-hydrostatic model is also developed. It is confirmed that the result of our Monte Carlo scheme for the stochastic coalescence of super-droplets agrees fairly well with the solutions of the stochastic coalescence equation. The behavior of the model is evaluated using a simple test problem, that of a shallow maritime cumulus formation initiated by a warm bubble. Possible extensions of SDM are briefly discussed. A theoretical analysis suggests that the computational cost of SDM becomes lower than the spectral (bin) method when the number of attributes - the variables that identify the state of each super-droplet - becomes larger than some critical value, which we estimate to be in the range $2\sim4$.

The basic formal and numerical aspects of different degree interpolated moving least-squares (IMLS) methods are studied using sixteen different combinations of coordinate system for fitting and weight functions. For the application we use six-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) of hydrogen peroxide, for which an analytic ("exact") potential is available in the literature. We systematically examine the effect of parameters in the weight function, the degree of the IMLS fit, and number of ab initio points. From these studies we discovered that the IMLS for almost all pairs of coordinate system show qualitatively similar behavior, however, the accuracy of the fits is noticeably different. We also found compact and accurate representations of potentials for presented degrees of IMLS.
