Abstract:
We searched for the 6$α$-condensed state in $^{24}$Mg by measuring the $^{12}\rm{C}+{}^{12}\rm{C}$ scattering with the SAKRA Si detector array at $E_\rm{cm}$ = 17.5-25.0 MeV. By using the invariant-mass method for the detected 3$α$ particles, the inclusive cross sections for the $^{12}\rm{C}+{}^{12}\rm{C}\to{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+X$ and $^{12}\rm{C}(3^-_1)+X$ reactions were determined. In addition, the missing-mass spectroscopy was successfully utilized to determine the excitation energy of the residual $^{12}\rm{C}$ nucleus and the exclusive cross sections for the $^{12}\rm{C}+{}^{12}\rm{C}\to{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_1)$, $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(2^+_1)$, and $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)$ reactions. In both the inclusive $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+X$ channel and the exclusive $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_1)$ channel, the cross section peaked at $E_rm{cm}$ = 19.4 MeV, which correspond to the excitation energy of $E_x$ = 33.3 MeV in $^{24}\rm{Mg}$. This 19.4-MeV state is a candidate for the 6$α$-condensed state because of the agreement of the excitation energy with the theoretical value and its decay property. In the exclusive $^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)+{}^{12}\rm{C}(0^+_2)$ channel, a broad state was observed at $E_\rm{cm}$ = 22.5 MeV, which correspond to the excitation energy of $E_x$ = 36.4 MeV in $^{24}\rm{Mg}$. From the angular distribution of the differential cross section, the spin and parity of this 22.5-MeV state was assigned to be $4^+$. In addition, a $2^+$ state was suggested at the low-energy side of the 22.5-MeV state. Because their excitation energies are higher than the theoretical value of the 6$α$-condensed state, these states might be excited states of the 6$α$-condensed state such as the $2^+_2$ and $4^+_1$ states in $^{12}\rm{C}$.

The cluster structure of the neutron-rich isotope $^{10}$Be has been probed via the $(p,pα)$ reaction at 150 MeV/nucleon in inverse kinematics and in quasifree conditions. The populated states of $^{6}$He residues were investigated through missing mass spectroscopy. The triple differential cross-section for the ground-state transition was extracted for quasifree angle pairs ($θ_{p}$, $θ_α$) and compared to distorted-wave impulse approximation reaction calculations performed in a microscopic framework using successively the Tohsaki-Horiuchi-Schuck-Röpke product wave-function and the wave-function deduced from Antisymmetrized Molecular Dynamics calculations. The remarkable agreement between calculated and measured cross-sections in both shape and magnitude validates the molecular structure description of the $^{10}$Be ground-state, configured as an $α$-$α$ core with two valence neutrons occupying $π$-type molecular orbitals.

We propose a novel x-ray imaging system, Multi-Image X-ray Interferometer Module (MIXIM), with which a very high angular resolution can be achieved even with a small system size. MIXIM is composed of equally-spaced multiple slits and an x-ray detector, and its angular resolution is inversely proportional to the distance between them. Here we report our evaluation experiments of MIXIM with a newly adopted CMOS sensor with a high spatial resolution of 2.5 μm. Our previous experiments with a prototype MIXIM were limited to one-dimensional imaging, and more importantly, the achieved angular resolution was only {\sim}1", severely constrained due to the spatial resolution of the adopted sensor with a pixel size of 4.25 μm. By contrast, one-dimensional images obtained in this experiment had a higher angular resolution of 0.5" when a configured system size was only {\sim}1 m, which demonstrates that MIXIM can simultaneously realize a high angular resolution and compact size. We also successfully obtained a two-dimensional profile of an x-ray beam for the first time for MIXIM by introducing a periodic pinhole mask. The highest angular resolution achieved in our experiments is smaller than 0.1" with a mask-sensor distance of 866.5 cm, which shows the high scalability of MIXIM.

Photo-nuclear reactions of light nuclei below a mass of $A=60$ are studied experimentally and theoretically by the PANDORA (Photo-Absorption of Nuclei and Decay Observation for Reactions in Astrophysics) project. Two experimental methods, virtual-photon excitation by proton scattering and real-photo absorption by a high-brilliance gamma-ray beam produced by laser Compton scattering, will be applied to measure the photo-absorption cross sections and the decay branching ratio of each decay channel as a function of the photon energy. Several nuclear models, e.g. anti-symmetrized molecular dynamics, mean-field type models, a large-scale shell model, and ab initio models, will be employed to predict the photo-nuclear reactions. The uncertainty in the model predictions will be evaluated from the discrepancies between the model predictions and the experimental data. The data and the predictions will be implemented in a general reaction calculation code TALYS . The results will be applied to the simulation of the photo-disintegration process of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays in inter-galactic propagation.

However, the response of the GAGG(Ce) scintillator to charged particles has not been fully examined. In the present work, the light output and energy resolution of the GAGG(Ce) scintillator were measured for protons and alpha particles at $E_{p}=5$-68 MeV and $E_α=8$-54 MeV as well as gamma rays at $E_γ=662$ keV from a $^{137}$Cs source. The results were compared with those of the CsI(Tl) scintillator. The scintillation efficiencies $dL/dE$ of the GAGG(Ce) and CsI(Tl) scintillators were obtained and parametrized as a function of linear energy transfer $dE/dx$.

We searched for the $α$ condensed state in $^{13}$C by measuring the $α$ inelastic scattering at $E_α = 388$ MeV at forward angles including 0 degrees. We performed the distorted-wave Born-approximation calculation with the single-folding potential and the multipole decomposition analysis to determine the isoscalar transition strengths in $^{13}$C. We found a bump structure around $E_x = 12.5$ MeV due to the isoscalar monopole ($IS0$) transition. A peak-fit analysis suggested that this bump consisted of several $1/2^-$ states. We propose that this bump is due to the mirror state of the 13.5 MeV-state in $^{13}$N, which dominantly decays to the $α$ condensed state in $^{12}$C. It was speculated that the $1/2^-$ states around $E_x = 12.5$ MeV were candidates for the $α$ condensed state, but the $3α+ n$ orthogonality condition model suggests that the $α$ condensed state is unlikely to emerge as the negative parity states. We also found two $1/2^+$ or $3/2^+$ states at $E_x = 14.5$ and 16.1 MeV excited with the isoscalar dipole ($IS1$) strengths. We suggest that the 16.1-MeV state is a possible candidate for the $α$ condensed state predicted by the cluster-model calculations on the basis of the good correspondence between the experimental and calculated level structures. However, the theoretical $IS1$ transition strength for this state is significantly smaller than the measured value. Further experimental information is strongly desired to establish the $α$ condensed state in $^{13}$C.

Element- and spin-selective carrier and valence plasmons can be observed using the resonance enhancement of core absorptions and electron spin polarization. Furthermore, bulk-sensitive EELS spectra can be obtained because the primary energy corresponds to the mean free path of 1--10~nm. The methodology is expected to provide us novel information of elementary excitations by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and resonant photoelectron spectroscopy.

In an effort to shed some light onto this problem, we present results of detailed studies of the ISGMR in the molybdenum nuclei, with the goal of elucidating where--and how--the softness manifests itself between $^{90}$Zr and the cadmium and tin isotopes. The experiment was conducted using the $^{94,96,98,100}$Mo($α,α^\prime$) reaction at $E_α= 386$ MeV. A comparison of the results with relativistic, self-consistent Random-Phase Approximation calculations indicates that the ISGMR response begins to show softness in the molybdenum isotopes beginning with $A=92$.

We have constructed and tested a novel plastic-scintillator-based solid-state active proton target for use in nuclear spectroscopic studies with nuclear reactions induced by an ion beam in inverse kinematics. The active target system, named Stack Structure Solid organic Scintillator Active Target (S4AT), consists of five layers of plastic scintillators, each with a 1-mm thickness. To determine the reaction point in the thickness direction, we exploit the difference in the energy losses due to the beam particle and the charged reaction product(s) in the scintillator material. S4AT offers the prospect of a relatively thick target while maintaining a good energy resolution. By considering the relative energy loss between different layers, the energy loss due to unreacted beam particles can be eliminated. Such procedure, made possible by the multi-layer structure, is essential to eliminate the effect of unreacted accompanying beam particles, thus enabling its operation at a moderate beam intensity of up to a few Mcps. We evaluated the performance of S4AT by measuring the elastic proton-proton scattering using a 70-MeV proton beam at Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center (CYRIC), Tohoku University.

Recent data on isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in the calcium isotopes $^{40,44,48}$Ca have suggested that $K_τ$, the asymmetry term in the nuclear incompressibility, has a positive value. A value of $K_τ> 0$ is entirely incompatible with present theoretical frameworks and, if correct, would have far-reaching implications on our understanding of myriad nuclear and astrophysical phenomena. This paper presents results of an independent ISGMR measurement with the $^{40,42,44,48}$Ca($α,α^\prime$) reaction at $E_α= 386$ MeV. These results conclusively discount the possibility of a positive value for $K_τ$, and are consistent with the previously-obtained values for this quantity.

Elastic and inelastic alpha scatterings on $^{10}$C were measured using a 68-MeV/u radioactive $^{10}$C beam incident on the recently developed MAIKo active target system. The phenomenological effective $α$-$N$ interaction and the point-nucleon density distribution in the ground state were determined from the elastic scattering data. The cross sections of the inelastic alpha scattering were calculated using this interaction and density distribution and were compared with the experiment to determine the neutron quadrupole transition matrix element $M_{n}$ between the ground state and the $2_{1}^{+}$ state at $E_{x} = 3.35$ MeV in $^{10}$C. The deduced neutron transition matrix element is $M_{n} = 6.9\, \pm0.7\, \mathrm{(fit)}\, \pm1.2\, \mathrm{(sys)}$ fm$^{2}$. The ratio of the neutron transition strength to proton transition strength was determined as $M_{n}/M_{p} = 1.05\, \pm0.11\, \mathrm{(fit)}\, \pm0.17\, \mathrm{(sys)}$, which indicates that the quadrupole transition between the ground state and the $2_{1}^{+}$ state in $^{10}$C is less neutron dominant compared to that in $^{16}$C.

The absolute value of $R_γ(E_x)$ was calibrated by using the well-known $γ$-ray emission probability from $\rm^{12}C^* ( 15.11$ MeV, $ 1^+$, $T=1$) and $\rm^{16}O^* ( 6.9$ MeV, $2^+$, $T=0$) states within 5\% uncertainty. We found that $R_γ(E_x)$ starts from zero at $E_x=16$ MeV, increases to a maximum of 53.3$\pm$0.4$\pm$3.9\% at $E_x=27$ MeV and then decreases. We also compared the measured values of $R_γ(E_x)$ with statistical model calculation based on the Hauser-Feshbach formalism in the energy region $E_x=$ 16-32 MeV and discussed the features of $γ$-ray emission probability quantitatively.

X-ray polarimetry in astronomy has not been exploited well, despite its importance. The recent innovation of instruments is changing this situation. We focus on a complementary MOS (CMOS) pixel detector with small pixel size and employ it as an x-ray photoelectron tracking polarimeter. The CMOS detector we employ is developed by GPixel Inc., and has a pixel size of 2.5 $\mathrmμ$m $\times$ 2.5 $\mathrmμ$m. Although it is designed for visible light, we succeed in detecting x-ray photons with an energy resolution of 176 eV (FWHM) at 5.9 keV at room temperature and the atmospheric condition. We measure the x-ray detection efficiency and polarimetry sensitivity by irradiating polarized monochromatic x-rays at BL20B2 in SPring-8, the synchrotron radiation facility in Japan. We obtain modulation factors of 7.63% $\pm$ 0.07% and 15.5% $\pm$ 0.4% at 12.4 keV and 24.8 keV, respectively. It demonstrates that this sensor can be used as an x-ray imaging spectrometer and polarimeter with the highest spatial resolution ever tested.

The results indicate the presence of high-momentum protons and neutrons induced by the tensor interactions in ground state of 16O.

A new active target named MAIKo (Mu-PIC based Active target for Inverse Kinematics$_{\circ}$) has been developed at Kyoto University and Research Center for Nuclear Physics (RCNP), Osaka University. MAIKo is suited for missing-mass spectroscopy of unstable nuclei at forward scattering angles in inverse kinematics. MAIKo consists of a time projection chamber (TPC), which incorporates a micro-pixel chamber ($μ$-PIC) as the electron multiplication and collection system. In MAIKo, the medium gas also plays the role of a reaction target, thus allowing detection of low-energy recoil particles with high position resolution. The MAIKo TPC was commissioned with He(93%)+iso-C$_{4}$H$_{10}$(7%) and He(93%)+CO$_{2}$(7%) mixture gasses at 430 hPa. The gas gain and the angular resolution of MAIKo were evaluated with an alpha source and a $^{4}$He beam at 56 MeV. The TPC was stably operated up to 1000-kcps beam intensity. A tracking algorithm using the Hough transform method has been developed to analyze scattering events. An angular resolution of 1.3$^{\circ}$ was achieved for scattered $^{4}$He particles.

All these strength distributions for the three nuclei practically coincide with each other, affirming that giant resonances, being collective phenomena, are not influenced by nuclear shell structure near $A\sim$90, contrary to the claim in a recent measurement.

The nuclear shell structure, which originates in the nearly independent motion of nucleons in an average potential, provides an important guide for our understanding of nuclear structure and the underlying nuclear forces. Its most remarkable fingerprint is the existence of the so-called `magic numbers' of protons and neutrons associated with extra stability. Although the introduction of a phenomenological spin-orbit (SO) coupling force in 1949 helped explain the nuclear magic numbers, its origins are still open questions. Here, we present experimental evidence for the smallest SO-originated magic number (subshell closure) at the proton number 6 in 13-20C obtained from systematic analysis of point-proton distribution radii, electromagnetic transition rates and atomic masses of light nuclei. Performing ab initio calculations on 14,15C, we show that the observed proton distribution radii and subshell closure can be explained by the state-of-the-art nuclear theory with chiral nucleon-nucleon and three-nucleon forces, which are rooted in the quantum chromodynamics.

The proton-proton momentum correlation functions ($C_{pp}(q)$) for kinematically complete decay channels of $^{23}$Al $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{21}$Na and $^{22}$Mg $\rightarrow$ p + p + $^{20}$Ne have been measured at the RIKEN RI Beam Factory. From the very different correlation strength of $C_{pp}(q)$ for $^{23}$Al and $^{22}$Mg, the source size and emission time information were extracted from the $C_{pp}(q)$ data by assuming a Gaussian source profile in the correlation function calculation code (CRAB). The results indicated that the mechanism of two-proton emission from $^{23}$Al was mainly sequential emission, while that of $^{22}$Mg was mainly three-body simultaneous emission. By combining our earlier results of the two-proton relative momentum and the opening angle, it is pointed out that the mechanism of two-proton emission could be distinguished clearly.

We have measured for the first time the charge-changing cross sections ($σ_{\text{CC}}$) of $^{12-16}$C on a $^{12}$C target at energies below $100A$ MeV. To analyze these low-energy data, we have developed a finite-range Glauber model with a global parameter set within the optical-limit approximation which is applicable to reaction cross section ($σ_{\text{R}}$) and $σ_{\text{CC}}$ measurements at incident energies from 10$A$ to $2100A$ MeV. Adopting the proton-density distribution of $^{12}$C known from the electron-scattering data, as well as the bare total nucleon-nucleon cross sections, and the real-to-imaginary-part ratios of the forward proton-proton elastic scattering amplitude available in the literatures, we determine the energy-dependent slope parameter $β_{\rm pn}$ of the proton-neutron elastic differential cross section so as to reproduce the existing $σ_{\text{R}}$ and interaction-cross-section data for $^{12}$C+$^{12}$C over a wide range of incident energies. The Glauber model thus formulated is applied to calculate the $σ_{\text{\tiny R}}$'s of $^{12}$C on a $^9$Be and $^{27}$Al targets at various incident energies. Our calculations show excellent agreement with the experimental data. Applying our model to the $σ_{\text{\tiny R}}$ and $σ_{\text{\tiny CC}}$ for the "neutron-skin" $^{16}$C nucleus, we reconfirm the importance of measurements at incident energies below $100A$ MeV. The proton root-mean-square radii of $^{12-16}$C are extracted using the measured $σ_{\text{CC}}$'s and the existing $σ_{\text{R}}$ data. The results for $^{12-14}$C are consistent with the values from the electron scatterings, demonstrating the feasibility, usefulness of the $σ_{\text{CC}}$ measurement and the present Glauber model.

The change in the configuration of valence protons between the initial and final states in the neutrinoless double-$β$ decay of $^{130}$Te $\rightarrow$ $^{130}$Xe and of $^{136}$Xe $\rightarrow$ $^{136}$Ba has been determined by measuring the cross sections of the ($d$,$^3$He) reaction with 101-MeV deuterons. Together with our recent determination of the relevant neutron configurations involved in the process, a quantitative comparison with the latest shell-model and interacting-boson-model calculations reveals significant discrepancies. The electric dipole strength distribution in 120Sn between 5 and 22 MeV has been determined at RCNP Osaka from a polarization transfer analysis of proton inelastic scattering at E_0 = 295 MeV and forward angles including 0°. Combined with photoabsorption data an electric dipole polarizability α_D(120Sn) = 8.93(36) fm^3 is extracted. The dipole polarizability as isovector observable par excellence carries direct information on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence. The correlation of the new value with the well established α_D(208Pb) serves as a test of its prediction by nuclear energy density functionals (EDFs). Models based on modern Skyrme interactions describe the data fairly well while most calculations based on relativistic Hamiltonians cannot.

An evident peak at $q_{pp}\sim20$ MeV/c as well as a peak in $θ_{pp}$ around 30$^\circ$ are seen in the two-proton break-up channel from a highly-excited $^{22}$Mg. In contrast, such peaks are absent for the $^{23}$Al case. It is concluded that the two-proton emission mechanism of excited $^{22}$Mg is quite different from the $^{23}$Al case, with the former having a favorable diproton emission component at a highly excited state and the latter dominated by the sequential decay process.

Below neutron threshoild it differs from the results of a 120Sn(gamma,gamma') experiment and peaks at an excitation energy of 8.3 MeV. The total strength corresponds to 2.3(2)% of the energy-weighted sum rule and is more than three times larger than what is observed with the (gamma, gamma') reaction. This implies a strong fragmentation of the E1 strength and/or small ground state branching ratios of the excited 1- states.

Measurements of the midrapidity transverse energy distribution, $d\Et/dη$, are presented for $p$$+$$p$, $d$$+$Au, and Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=200$ GeV and additionally for Au$+$Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{NN}}}=62.4$ and 130 GeV. The $d\Et/dη$ distributions are first compared with the number of nucleon participants $N_{\rm part}$, number of binary collisions $N_{\rm coll}$, and number of constituent-quark participants $N_{qp}$ calculated from a Glauber model based on the nuclear geometry. For Au$+$Au, $\mean{d\Et/dη}/N_{\rm part}$ increases with $N_{\rm part}$, while $\mean{d\Et/dη}/N_{qp}$ is approximately constant for all three energies. This indicates that the two component ansatz, $dE_{T}/dη\propto (1-x) N_{\rm part}/2 + x N_{\rm coll}$, which has been used to represent $E_T$ distributions, is simply a proxy for $N_{qp}$, and that the $N_{\rm coll}$ term does not represent a hard-scattering component in $E_T$ distributions. The $dE_{T}/dη$ distributions of Au$+$Au and $d$$+$Au are then calculated from the measured $p$$+$$p$ $E_T$ distribution using two models that both reproduce the Au$+$Au data. However, while the number-of-constituent-quark-participant model agrees well with the $d$$+$Au data, the additive-quark model does not.

Abstract:
Isoscalar giant resonances and low spin states in $^{32}$S have been measured with inelastic $α$ scattering at extremely forward angles including zero degrees at E$_α$ = 386 MeV. By applying the multipole decomposition analysis, various excited states are classified according to their spin and parities (J$^π$), and are discussed in relation to the super deformed and $^{28}$Si + $α$ cluster bands.

The resonance structure in $^{11}$C is particularly of interest with regard to the astrophysical $^{7}$Be($α$, $γ$) reaction, relevant at high temperature, and to the $α$-cluster structure in $^{11}$C. The measurement was to determine unknown resonance parameters for the high excited states of $^{11}$C. In particular, the $α$ decay width can be useful information to discuss $α$ cluster structure in $^{11}$C. New measurements of the $^{7}$Be+$α$ resonant scattering and the $^{7}$Be($α$, $p$)$^{10}$B reaction in inverse kinematics were performed for center-of-mass energy up to 5.5 MeV, and the resonances at excitation energies of 8.9--12.7 MeV in the compound $^{11}$C nucleus were studied. Inelastic scattering of $^{7}$Be+$α$ and the $^{7}$Be($α$, $p_1$)$^{10}$B$^*$ reaction were also studied with a simultaneous $γ$-ray measurement. The measurements were performed at the low-energy RI beam facility CRIB (CNS Radioactive Ion Beam separator) of the Center for Nuclear Study (CNS), the University of Tokyo. We obtained excitation functions of $^{7}$Be($α$, $α_0$)$^{7}$Be (elastic scattering), $^{7}$Be($α$, $α_1$)$^{7}$Be$^*$ (inelastic scattering), $^{7}$Be($α$, $p_0$)$^{10}$B, and $^{7}$Be($α$, $p_1$)$^{10}$B$^*$. Many resonances including a new one were observed and their parameters were determined by an R-matrix analysis. The resonances we observed possibly enhance the $^{7}$Be($α$, $γ$) reaction rate but in a smaller magnitude than the lower-lying resonances. A new negative-parity cluster band, similar to the one previously suggested in the mirror nucleus $^{11}$B, is proposed.

ISGMR strength has been computed in relativistic RPA using NL3 and FSUGold effective interactions. Both models significantly overestimate the centroids of the ISGMR strength in the Cd isotopes. Combined with other recent theoretical effort, the question of the "softness" of the open-shell nuclei in the tin region remains open still.

Theoretical calculations assuming standard cold nuclear matter effects describe the data well for the entire p_T range. This indicates that the large enhancement of direct photons observed in Au+Au collisions for 1.0<p_T<2.5 GeV/c is due to a source other than the initial-state nuclear effects.

Kudekar et al. proved that the belief-propagation (BP) performance for low-density parity check (LDPC) codes can be boosted up to the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) performance by spatial coupling. In this paper, spatial coupling is applied to sparsely-spread code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems to improve the performance of iterative multiuser detection based on BP. Two iterative receivers based on BP are considered: One receiver is based on exact BP and the other on an approximate BP with Gaussian approximation. The performance of the two BP receivers is evaluated via density evolution (DE) in the dense limit after taking the large-system limit, in which the number of users and the spreading factor tend to infinity while their ratio is kept constant. The two BP receivers are shown to achieve the same performance as each other in these limits. Furthermore, taking a continuum limit for the obtained DE equations implies that the performance of the two BP receivers can be improved up to the performance achieved by the symbol-wise MAP detection, called individually-optimal detection, via spatial coupling. Numerical simulations show that spatial coupling can provide a significant improvement in bit error rate for finite-sized systems especially in the region of high system loads.

Differential cross sections of the one-neutron transfer reactions populating the ground states and several low-lying excited states in 15O were measured. Comparing the ratios of the cross sections for each excited state to the one for the ground state over a wide range of momentum transfer, we found a marked enhancement for the positive-parity state(s). The observation indicates large components of high-momentum neutrons in the initial ground-state configurations, due possibly to the tensor interactions.

Joint user selection (US) and vector precoding (US-VP) is proposed for multiuser multiple-input multiple-output (MU-MIMO) downlink. The main difference between joint US-VP and conventional US is that US depends on data symbols for joint US-VP, whereas conventional US is independent of data symbols. The replica method is used to analyze the performance of joint US-VP in the large-system limit, where the numbers of transmit antennas, users, and selected users tend to infinity while their ratios are kept constant. The analysis under the assumptions of replica symmetry (RS) and 1-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) implies that optimal data-independent US provides nothing but the same performance as random US in the large-system limit, whereas data-independent US is capacity-achieving as only the number of users tends to infinity. It is shown that joint US-VP can provide a substantial reduction of the energy penalty in the large-system limit. Consequently, joint US-VP outperforms separate US-VP in terms of the achievable sum rate, which consists of a combination of vector precoding (VP) and data-independent US. In particular, data-dependent US can be applied to general modulation, and implemented with a greedy algorithm.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channels (BCs) (MIMO-BCs) with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter are considered. As joint user selection (US) and vector precoding (VP) (US-VP) with zero-forcing transmit beamforming (ZF-BF), US and continuous VP (CVP) (US-CVP) and data-dependent US (DD-US) are investigated. The replica method, developed in statistical physics, is used to analyze the energy penalties for the two US-VP schemes in the large-system limit, where the number of users, the number of selected users, and the number of transmit antennas tend to infinity with their ratios kept constant. Four observations are obtained in the large-system limit: First, the assumptions of replica symmetry (RS) and 1-step replica symmetry breaking (1RSB) for DD-US can provide acceptable approximations for low and moderate system loads, respectively. Secondly, DD-US outperforms CVP with random US in terms of the energy penalty for low-to-moderate system loads. Thirdly, the asymptotic energy penalty of DD-US is indistinguishable from that of US-CVP for low system loads. Finally, a greedy algorithm of DD-US proposed in authors' previous work can achieve nearly optimal performance for low-to-moderate system loads.

Scattering of protons of several hundred MeV is a promising new spectroscopic tool for the study of electric dipole strength in nuclei. A case study of 208Pb shows that at very forward angles J^pi = 1- states are strongly populated via Coulomb excitation. A separation from nuclear excitation of other modes is achieved by a multipole decomposition analysis of the experimental cross sections based on theoretical angular distributions calculated within the quasiparticle-phonon model. The B(E1) transition strength distribution is extracted for excitation energies up to 9 MeV, i.e., in the region of the so-called pygmy dipole resonance (PDR). The Coulomb-nuclear interference shows sensitivity to the underlying structure of the E1 transitions, which allows for the first time an experimental extraction of the electromagnetic transition strength and the energy centroid of the PDR.

User selection (US) with Zero-forcing beamforming is considered in fast fading Gaussian vector broadcast channels with perfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. A novel criterion for US is proposed, which depends on both CSI and the data symbols, while conventional criteria only depend on CSI. Since the optimization of US based on the proposed criterion is infeasible, a greedy algorithm of data-dependent US is proposed to perform the optimization approximately. An overhead issue arises in fast fading channels: On every update of US, the transmitter might inform each user whether he/she has been selected, using a certain fraction of resources. This overhead results in a significant rate loss for fast fading channels. In order to circumvent this overhead issue, iterative detection and decoding schemes are proposed on the basis of belief propagation. The proposed iterative schemes require no information about whether each user has been selected. The proposed US scheme is compared to a data-independent US scheme. The complexity of the two schemes is comparable to each other for fast fading channels. Numerical simulations show that the proposed scheme can outperform the data-independent scheme for fast fading channels in terms of energy efficiency, bit error rate, and achievable sum rate.

The vector analyzing power has been measured for the elastic scattering of neutron-rich 6He from polarized protons at 71 MeV/nucleon making use of a newly constructed solid polarized proton target operated in a low magnetic field and at high temperature. Two approaches based on local one-body potentials were applied to investigate the spin-orbit interaction between a proton and a 6He nucleus. An optical model analysis revealed that the spin-orbit potential for 6He is characterized by a shallow and long-ranged shape compared with the global systematics of stable nuclei. A semimicroscopic analysis with a alpha+n+n cluster folding model suggests that the interaction between a proton and the alpha core is essentially important in describing the p+6He elastic scattering. The data are also compared with fully microscopic analyses using non-local optical potentials based on nucleon-nucleon g-matrices.

Abstract:
A benchmark experiment on 208Pb shows that polarized proton inelastic scattering at very forward angles including 0° is a powerful tool for high-resolution studies of electric dipole (E1) and spin magnetic dipole (M1) modes in nuclei over a broad excitation energy range to test up-to-date nuclear models. Abstract:
Kudekar et al. proved that the belief-propagation (BP) threshold for low-density parity-check codes can be boosted up to the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) threshold by spatial coupling. In this paper, spatial coupling is applied to randomly-spread code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems in order to improve the performance of BP-based multiuser detection (MUD). Spatially-coupled CDMA systems can be regarded as multi-code CDMA systems with two transmission phases. The large-system analysis shows that spatial coupling can improve the BP performance, while there is a gap between the BP performance and the individually-optimal (IO) performance.

Kudekar et al. proved an interesting result in low-density parity-check (LDPC) convolutional codes: The belief-propagation (BP) threshold is boosted to the maximum-a-posteriori (MAP) threshold by spatial coupling. Furthermore, the authors showed that the BP threshold for code-division multiple-access (CDMA) systems is improved up to the optimal one via spatial coupling. In this letter, a phenomenological model for elucidating the essence of these phenomenon, called threshold improvement, is proposed. The main result implies that threshold improvement occurs for spatially-coupled general graphical models.

This study was performed by introducing a Monte Carlo technique for the description of the THSR (Tohsaki Horiuchi Schuck Röpke) wave function, and the coupling effect to other low-lying cluster states was taken into account. A large isoscalar monopole ($E0$) transition strength from the ground to the gas-like state is discussed. The gas-like state of two $α$ clusters in $^{24}$Mg around the $^{16}$O core appears slightly below the 2$α$-threshold e

The results are found to be incompatible with a t-matrix folding model prediction. Comparisons of the data with g-matrix folding analyses clearly show that the vector analyzing power is sensitive to the nuclear structure model used in the reaction analysis. The alpha-core distribution in 6He is suggested to be a possible key to understand the nuclear structure sensitivity.

Abstract:
A deuteron beam polarimeter has been constructed at the Internal Target Station
at the Nuclotron of JINR. The polarimeter is based on spin-asymmetry measurements in the d-p elastic scattering at large angles and the deuteron kinetic energy of 270 MeV. It allows to measure vector and tensor components of the deuteron beam polarization
simultaneously.
