We provide global extensions of previous results about representations of characteristic classes of coherent analytic sheaves and of Baum-Bott residues of holomorphic foliations. We show in the first case that they can be represented by currents with support on the support of the given coherent analytic sheaf, and in the second case, by currents with support on the singular set of the foliation. In previous works, we have constructed such representatives provided global resolutions of the appropriate sheaves existed. In this article, we show that the definition of Chern classes of Green and the associated techniques, which work on arbitrary complex manifolds without any assumption on the existence of global resolutions, may be combined with our previous constructions to yield the desired representatives.
We also prove a transgression formula for such representatives, which is new even in the case when global resolutions exist. More precisely, the representatives depend on local resolutions of the sheaf, and on choices of metrics and connections on these bundles, i.e., the currents for two different choices differ by a current of the form $dN$, where $N$ is an explicit current, which in the first case above has support on the support of the given coherent analytic sheaf, and in the second case above has support on the singular set of the foliation.

Let $\mathscr{F}$ be a holomorphic foliation of rank $κ$ on a complex manifold $M$ of dimension $n$, let $Z$ be a compact connected component of the singular set of $\mathscr{F}$, and let $Φ\in \mathbb C[z_1,\ldots,z_n]$ be a homogeneous symmetric polynomial of degree $\ell$ with $n-κ< \ell \leq n$. Given a locally free resolution of the normal sheaf of $\mathscr{F}$, equipped with Hermitian metrics and certain smooth connections, we construct an explicit current $R^Φ_Z$ with support on $Z$ that represents the Baum-Bott residue $\text{res}^Φ(\mathscr{F}; Z)\in H_{2n-2\ell}(Z, \mathbb C)$ and is obtained as the limit of certain smooth representatives of $\text{res}^Φ(\mathscr{F}; Z)$. If the connections are $(1,0)$-connections and $\text{codim} Z\geq \ell$, then $R^Φ_Z$ is independent of the choice of metrics and connections. When $\mathscr{F}$ has rank one we give a more precise description of $R^Φ_Z$ in terms of so-called residue currents of Bochner-Martinelli type. In particular, when the singularities are isolated, we recover the classical expression of Baum-Bott residues in terms of Grothendieck residues.

Nowadays, several data analysis problems require for complexity reduction, mainly meaning that they target at removing the non-influential covariates from the model and at delivering a sparse model. When categorical covariates are present, with their levels being dummy coded, the number of parameters included in the model grows rapidly, fact that emphasizes the need for reducing the number of parameters to be estimated. In this case, beyond variable selection, sparsity is also achieved through fusion of levels of covariates which do not differentiate significantly in terms of their influence on the response variable. In this work a new regularization technique is introduced, called $L_{0}$-Fused Group Lasso ($L_{0}$-FGL) for binary logistic regression. It uses a group lasso penalty for factor selection and for the fusion part it applies an $L_{0}$ penalty on the differences among the levels' parameters of a categorical predictor. Using adaptive weights, the adaptive version of $L_{0}$-FGL method is derived. Theoretical properties, such as the existence, $\sqrt{n}$ consistency and oracle properties under certain conditions, are established. In addition, it is shown that even in the diverging case where the number of parameters $p_{n}$ grows with the sample size $n$, $\sqrt{n}$ consistency and a consistency in variable selection result are achieved. Two computational methods, PIRLS and a block coordinate descent (BCD) approach using quasi Newton, are developed and implemented. A simulation study supports that $L_{0}$-FGL shows an outstanding performance, especially in the high dimensional case.

We compare the observational properties of SN 2009mw with those of other SNe belonging to the same subgroup, and find that it shows similarities to several objects. The physical parameters of the progenitor and the SN are estimated via hydrodynamical modelling, yielding an explosion energy of $1$ foe, a pre-SN mass of $19\,{\rm M_{\odot}}$, a progenitor radius as $30\,{\rm R_{\odot}}$ and a $^{56}$Ni mass as $0.062\,{\rm M_{\odot}}$. These values indicate that the progenitor of SN 2009mw was a blue supergiant star, similar to the progenitor of SN 1987A. We examine the host environment of SN 2009mw and find that it emerged from a population with slightly sub-solar metallicty.

We show that, given a Banach space $X$, the Lipschitz-free space over $X$, denoted by $\mathcal{F}(X)$, is isomorphic to $(\sum_{n=1}^\infty \mathcal{F}(X))_{\ell_1}$. Some applications are presented, including a non-linear version of Pelczyśki's decomposition method for Lipschitz-free spaces and the identification up to isomorphism between $\mathcal{F}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ and the Lipschitz-free space over any compact metric space which is locally bi-Lipschitz embeddable into $\mathbb{R}^n$ and which contains a subset that is Lipschitz equivalent to the unit ball of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We also show that $\mathcal{F}(M)$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}(c_0)$ for all separable metric spaces $M$ which are absolute Lipschitz retracts and contain a subset which is Lipschitz equivalent to the unit ball of $c_0$. This class contains all $C(K)$ spaces with $K$ infinite compact metric (Dutrieux and Ferenczi had already proved that $\mathcal{F}(C(K))$ is isomorphic to $\mathcal{F}(c_0)$ for those $K$ using a different method). The changes in phase, time and frequency suffered by signals when retransmitted by a remote and inaccessible transponder and the propagation delays are major constraints to obtain accurate ranging measurements in various related applications. We present a new method and system to determine these delays for every single pulsed signal transmission. The process utilizes four ground-based reference stations, synchronized in time and installed at well known geodesic coordinates. The repeater station is located within the fields of view common to the four reference bases, such as in a platform transported by a satellite, balloon, aircraft, etc. Signal transmitted by one of the reference bases is retransmitted by the transponder, received back by the four bases, producing four ranging measurements which are processed to determine uniquely the time delays undergone in every retransmission process. The repeater's positions with respect to each group of three out of four reference bases are given by a system of equations. A minimization function is derived comparing repeater's positions referred to at least two groups of three reference bases. The minimum found by iterative methods provide the signal transit time at the repeater and propagation delays, providing the correct repeater position. The method is applicable to the transponder platform positioning and navigation, time synchronization of remote clocks, and location of targets. The algorithm has been fully demonstrated simulated for practical situation with the transponder carried by an aircraft moving over bases on the ground. The errors of the determinations have been evaluated for uncertainties in clock synchronization, in propagation time delays and other system parameters.

We show that the set of Lebesgue integrable functions in $[0,1]$ which are nowhere essentially bounded is spaceable, improving a result from [F. J. García-Pacheco, M. Martín, and J. B. Seoane-Sepúlveda. \textit{Lineability, spaceability, and algebrability of certain subsets of function spaces,} Taiwanese J. Math., \textbf{13} (2009), no. 4, 1257--1269], and that it is strongly $\mathfrak{c}$-algebrable. We prove strong $\mathfrak{c}$-algebrability and non-separable spaceability of the set of functions of bounded variation which have a dense set of jump discontinuities. Applications to sets of Lebesgue-nowhere-Riemann integrable and Riemann-nowhere-Newton integrable functions are presented as corollaries. In addition we prove that the set of Kurzweil integrable functions which are not Lebesgue integrable is spaceable (in the Alexievicz norm) but not 1-algebrable. We also show that there exists an infinite dimensional vector space $S$ of differentiable functions such that each element of the $C([0,1])$-closure of $S$ is a primitive to a Kurzweil integrable function, in connection to a classic spaceability result from [V. I. Gurariy, \textit{Subspaces and bases in spaces of continuous functions (Russian),} Dokl. Akad. Nauk SSSR, \textbf{167} (1966), 971-973].

Abstract:
We say that a function $f:[0,1]\rightarrow \R$ is \emph{nowhere $L^q$} if, for each nonvoid open subset $U$ of $[0,1]$, the restriction $f|_U$ is not in $L^q(U)$. For a fixed $1 \leq p <\infty$, we will show that the set $$ S_p\doteq {f \in L^p[0,1]: f is nowhere $L^q$, for each p<q \leq \infty}, $$ united with ${0}$, contains an isometric and complemented copy of $\ell_p…

In particular, this improves a result from G. Botelho, V. Fávaro, D. Pellegrino, and J. B. Seoane-Sepúlveda, $L_p[0,1]\setminus \cup_{q>p} L_q[0,1]$ is spaceable for every $p>0$, preprint, 2011., since $S_p$ turns out to be spaceable. In addition, our result is a generalization of one of the main results from S. Głcab, P. L. Kaufmann, and L. Pellegrini, Spaceability and algebrability of sets of nowhere integrable functions, preprint, 2011.

The Argon Dark Matter (ArDM-1t) experiment is a ton-scale liquid argon (LAr) double-phase time projection chamber designed for direct Dark Matter searches. Such a device allows to explore the low energy frontier in LAr with a charge imaging detector. The ionization charge is extracted from the liquid into the gas phase and there amplified by the use of a Large Electron Multiplier in order to reduce the detection threshold. Direct detection of the ionization charge with fine spatial granularity, combined with a measurement of the amplitude and time evolution of the associated primary scintillation light, provide powerful tools for the identification of WIMP interactions against the background due to electrons, photons and possibly neutrons if scattering more than once. A one ton LAr detector is presently installed on surface at CERN to fully test all functionalities and it will be soon moved to an underground location. We will emphasize here the lessons learned from such a device for the design of a large LAr TPC for neutrino oscillation, proton decay and astrophysical neutrinos searches.

Two of them having different approaches are presented: (1) the ICARUS-T600 detector having a system consisting of an external power supply, HV feedthroughs and resistive voltage degraders and (2) the ArDM-1t detector having a cryogenic Greinacher HV multiplier inside the liquid argon volume. For a giant scale liquid argon TPC, a system providing 2 MV may be required to attain a drift length of approx. 20 m. Feasibility of such a system is evaluated by extrapolating the existing designs.

The goal is to reach a minimum recoil energy of 30\,keVr to detect recoiling nuclei. In this paper we describe the experimental concept and present results on the light detection system, tested for the first time in ArDM on the surface at CERN. With a preliminary and incomplete set of PMTs, the light yield at zero electric field is found to be between 0.3-0.5 phe/keVee depending on the position within the detector volume, confirming our expectations based on smaller detector setups.

To optimise the design of the light readout in the ArDM 1-ton liquid argon dark matter detector, a range of reflector and WLS coating combinations were investigated in several small setups, where argon scintillation light was generated by radioactive sources in gas at normal temperature and pressure and shifted into the blue region by tetraphenyl butadiene (TPB). Various thicknesses of TPB were deposited by spraying and vacuum evaporation onto specular 3M{\small\texttrademark}-foil and diffuse Tetratex{\small\textregistered} (TTX) substrates. Light yields of each reflector and TPB coating combination were compared. Reflection coefficients of TPB coated reflectors were independently measured using a spectroradiometer in a wavelength range between 200 and 650 nm. WLS coating on the PMT window was also studied. These measurements were used to define the parameters of the light reflectors of the ArDM experiment. Fifteen large $120\times 25$ cm$^2$ TTX sheets were coated and assembled in the detector. Measurements in argon gas are reported providing good evidence of fulfilling the light collection requirements of the experiment.

The ArDM project aims at operating a large noble liquid detector to search for direct evidence of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMP) as Dark Matter in the universe. Background sources relevant to ton-scale liquid and gaseous argon detectors, such as neutrons from detector components, muon-induced neutrons and neutrons caused by radioactivity of rock, as well as the internal $^{39}Ar$ background, are studied with simulations. These background radiations are addressed with the design of an appropriate shielding as well as with different background rejection potentialities. Among them the project relies on event topology recognition, event localization, density ionization discrimination and pulse shape discrimination. Background rates, energy spectra, characteristics of the background-induced nuclear recoils in liquid argon, as well as the shielding performance and rejection performance of the detector are described.

The Dark Matter part of the universe presumably consists of WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles). The ArDM project aims at measuring signals induced by WIMPs in a liquid argon detector. A 1-ton prototype is currently developed with the goal of demonstrating the feasibility of such a direct detection experiment with large target mass. The technical design of the detector aims at ind ependently measuring the scintillation light and the ionization charge originating from an interaction of a WIMP with an argon nucleus. The principle of the experiment and the conceptual design of the detector are described.
