C-axis Josephson Tunneling Between YBCO and Pb: Direct Evidence for Mixed Order Parameter Symmetry in a High-T_c Superconductor

We report a new class of $c$-axis Josephson tunneling experiments in which a conventional superconductor (Pb) is deposited across a single twin boundary of a YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} crystal. We measure the critical current as a function of magnitude and angle of magnetic field applied in the plane of the junction. We report a new class of $c$-axis Josephson tunneling experiments in which a conventional superconductor (Pb) is deposited across a single twin boundary of a YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} crystal. We measure the critical current as a function of magnitude and angle of magnetic field applied in the plane of the junction. In all samples, we observe a clear experimental signature of an order parameter phase shift across the twin boundary. These results provide strong evidence for mixed $d$- and $s$-wave pairing in YBCO, with a reversal in the sign of the $s$-wave component across the twin boundary.

Multifrequncy Radio Observations of the Gravitational Lens System MG0414+0534

The four-image gravitational lens system MG0414+0534 was observed with the VLA at 1.4, 5, 8, 15, and 22 GHz. The 15 and 22 GHz images reveal structure in the components which is consistent with that seen at other wavelengths. There was no detection of other extended emission, nor were there detections of the lensing galaxy or the "component x" seen in optical images. Detections of polarized emis…

Detections of polarized emission show that the fractional polarized intensity is <~ 1%. The observed properties of MG0414 suggest that it is a GHz-peaked spectrum source.

The Haystack 37-meter telescope was used in a pilot project in May 1995 to observe GRB error boxes at 23~GHz. Seven BATSE error boxes and two IPN arcs were scanned by driving the beam of the telescope rapidly across their area. The Haystack 37-meter telescope was used in a pilot project in May 1995 to observe GRB error boxes at 23~GHz. Seven BATSE error boxes and two IPN arcs were scanned by driving the beam of the telescope rapidly across their area. For the BATSE error boxes, the radio observations took place two to eighteen days after the BATSE detection, and several boxes were observed more than once. Total power data were recorded continuously as the telescope was driven at a rate of 0.2~degrees/second, yielding Nyquist sampling of the beam with an integration time of 50~milliseconds, corresponding to a theoretical rms sensitivity of 0.5~Jy. Under conditions of good weather, this sensitivity was achieved. In a preliminary analysis of the data we detect only two sources, 3C273 and 0552+398, both catalogued sources that are known to be variable at 23~GHz. Neither had a flux density that was unusally high or low at the time of our observations.

We analyze stability conditions of "Maclaurin flows" (self-gravitating, barotropic, two dimensional, stationary streams moving in closed loops around a point) by minimizing their energy, subject to fixing all the constants of the motion including mass and circulations. Necessary and sufficient conditions of stability are obtained when gyroscopic terms in the perturbed Lagrangian are zero. To illustrate and check the properties of this new energy principle, we have calculated the stability limits of an ordinary Maclaurin disk whose dynamical stability limits are known. Perturbations are in the plane of the disk. We find all necessary and sufficient conditions of stability for single mode symmetrical or antisymmetrical perturbations. The limits of stability are identical with those given by a dynamical analysis. Regarding mixed types of perturbations the maximally constrained energy principle give for some the necessary and sufficient condition of stability, for others only sufficient conditions of stability. The application of the new energy principle to Maclaurin disks shows the method to be as powerful as the method of dynamical perturbations.
