The interplay of structural and electronic phases in iron-based superconductors is a central theme in the search for the superconducting pairing mechanism. While electronic nematicity, defined as the breaking of four-fold symmetry triggered by electronic degrees of freedom, is competing with superconductivity, the effect of purely structural orthorhombic order is unexplored. Here, using x-ray diffraction (XRD), we reveal a new structural orthorhombic phase with an exceptionally high onset temperature ($T_\mathrm{ort} \sim 250$ K), which coexists with superconductivity ($T_\mathrm{c} = 25$ K), in an electron-doped iron-pnictide superconductor far from the underdoped region. Furthermore, our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements demonstrate the absence of electronic nematic order as the driving mechanism, in contrast to other underdoped iron pnictides where nematicity is commonly found. Our results establish a new, high temperature phase in the phase diagram of iron-pnictide superconductors and impose strong constraints for the modeling of their superconducting pairing mechanism.

In the Ca$_{1-x}$La$_x$FeAs$_2$ (112) family of pnictide superconductors, we have investigated a highly overdoped composition (x = 0.56), prepared by high-pressure, high-temperature synthesis. Magnetic measurements show an antiferromagnetic transition at TN = 120K, well above the one at lower do** (0.15 < x < 0.27). Below the onset of long-range magnetic order at TN, the electrical resistivity is strongly reduced and is dominated by electron-electron interactions, as evident from its temperature dependence. The Seebeck coefficient shows a clear metallic behavior as in narrow band conductors. The temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient and the violation of Kohler's rule agree with the multiband character of the material. No superconductivity was observed down to 1.8 K. The success of the high-pressure synthesis encourages further investigations of the so far only partially explored phase diagram in this family of Iron-based high temperature superconductors.

We report a detailed study of the electrical transport properties of single crystals of Pr$_4$Fe$_2$As$_2$Te$_{1-x}$O$_4$, a recently discovered iron-based superconductor. Resistivity, Hall effect and magnetoresistance are measured in a broad temperature range revealing the role of electrons as dominant charge carriers. The significant temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient and the violation of Kohler's law indicate multiband effects in this compound. The upper critical field and the magnetic anisotropy are investigated in fields up to 16 T, applied parallel and perpendicular to the crystallographic c-axis. Hydrostatic pressure up to 2 GPa linearly increases the critical temperature and the resistivity residual ratio. A simple two-band model is used to describe the transport and magnetic properties of Pr$_4$Fe$_2$As$_2$Te$_{1-x}$O$_4$. The model can successfully explain the strongly temperature dependent negative Hall coefficient and the high magnetic anisotropy assuming that the mobility of electrons is higher than that of holes.

Moessbauer spectroscopy measurements were performed for the temperature range between 4.2 K and 300 K in a transmission geometry applying 14.41-keV resonant line in 57Fe for PrFeAsO the latter being a parent compound of the iron-based superconductors belonging to the '1111' family. It was found that an itinerant 3d magnetic order develops at about 165 K and it is accompanied by an orthorhombic distortion of the chemical unit cell. A complete longitudinal 3d incommensurate spin density wave (SDW) order develops at about 140 K. Transferred hyperfine magnetic field generated by the praseodymium magnetic order on iron nuclei is seen at 12.8 K and below, i.e., below magnetic order of praseodymium magnetic moments. It is oriented perpendicular to the field of SDW on iron nuclei. The shape of SDW is almost rectangular at low temperatures and it transforms into roughly triangular form around 'nematic' transition at about 140 K. Praseodymium magnetic order leads to the substantial enhancement of SDW due to the large orbital contribution to the magnetic moment of praseodymium. A transferred field indicates presence of strong magnetic susceptibility anisotropy in the [b-c] plane while following rotation of praseodymium magnetic moments in this plane with lowering temperature. It was found that 'nematic' phase region is a region of incoherent spin density wavelets typical for a critical region.

We present a detailed study of the electrical transport properties of a recently discovered iron-based superconductor: Sm$_4$Fe$_2$As$_2$Te$_{0.72}$O$_{2.8}$F$_{1.2}$. We followed the temperature dependence of the upper critical field by resistivity measurement of single crystals in magnetic fields up to 16 T, oriented along the two main crystallographic directions. This material exhibits a zero-temperature upper critical field of 90 T and 65 T parallel and perpendicular to the Fe$_2$As$_2$ planes, respectively. An unprecedented superconducting magnetic anisotropy $γ_H=H_{c2}^{ab}/H_{c2}^c \sim 14$ is observed near Tc, and it decreases at lower temperatures as expected in multiband superconductors. Direct measurement of the electronic anisotropy was performed on microfabricated samples, showing a value of $ρ_c/ρ_{ab}(300K) \sim 5$ that raises up to 19 near Tc. Finally, we have studied the pressure and temperature dependence of the in-plane resistivity. The critical temperature decreases linearly upon application of hydrostatic pressure (up to 2 GPa) similarly to overdoped cuprate superconductors. The resistivity shows saturation at high temperatures, suggesting that the material approaches the Mott-Ioffe-Regel limit for metallic conduction. Indeed, we have successfully modelled the resistivity in the normal state with a parallel resistor model that is widely accepted for this state. All the measured quantities suggest strong pressure dependence of the density of states.

We report the synthesis of single crystals of a novel layered iridate Ba$_{21}$Ir$_9$O$_{43}$, and present the crystallographic, transport and magnetic properties of this material. The compound has a hexagonal structure with two iridium oxide layers stacked along the $c$ direction. One layer consists of a triangular arrangement of Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimers while the other layer comprises two regular octahedra and one triangular pyramid, forming inter-penetrated triangular lattices. The resistivity as a function of temperature exhibits an insulating behavior, with a peculiar $T^{-3}$ behavior. Magnetic susceptibility shows antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss behavior with $Θ_\mathrm{CW} \simeq -$90 K while a magnetic transition occurs at substantially lower temperature of 9 K. We discuss possible valence states and effective magnetic moments on Ir ions in different local environments, and argue that the Ir ions in a unique triangular-pyramidal configuration likely carry unusually large magnetic moments.

The lattice properties at low temperatures of two samples of NdFeAsO1-xFx (x=0.05 and 0.25) have been examined in order to investigate possible structural phase transition that may occur in the optimally doped superconducting sample with respect to the non-superconducting low-F concentration compound. In order to detect small modifications in the ion displacements with temperature micro-Raman and high resolution synchrotron powder diffraction measurements were carried out. No increase of the width of the (220) or (322) tetragonal diffraction peaks and microstrains could be found in the superconducting sample from synchrotron XRD measurements. On the other hand, the atomic displacement parameters deviate from the expected behavior, in agreement with modifications in the phonon width, as obtained by Raman scattering. These deviations occur around 150 K for both F do**s, with distinct differences among the two compounds, i.e., they decrease at low do** and increase for the superconducting sample. The data do not support a hidden phase transition to an orthorhombic phase in the superconducting compound, but point to an isostructural lattice deformation. Based on the absence of magnetic effects in this temperature range for the superconducting sample, we attribute the observed lattice anomalies to the formation of local lattice distortions that, being screened by the carriers, can only acquire long-range coherence by means of a structural phase transition at low do** levels.

Among the widely studied superconducting iron-pnictide compounds belonging to the Ln1111 family (with Ln a lanthanide), a systematic investigation of the crossover region between the superconducting and the antiferromagnetic phase for the Ln = Nd case has been missing. We fill this gap by focusing on the intermediate do** regime of NdFeAsO(1-x)F(x) by means of dc-magnetometry and muon-spin spectroscopy measurements. The long-range order we detect at low fluorine do** is replaced by short-range magnetic interactions at x = 0.08, where also superconductivity appears. In this case, longitudinal-field muon-spin spectroscopy experiments show clear evidence of slow magnetic fluctuations that disappear at low temperatures. This fluctuating component is ascribed to the glassy-like character of the magnetically ordered phase of NdFeAsO at intermediate fluorine do**.

We have studied the angular dependent de Haas-van Alphen oscillations of LaRu$_2$P$_2$ using magnetic torque in pulsed magnetic fields up to 60T. The observed oscillation frequencies are in excellent agreement with the geometry of the calculated Fermi surface. The temperature dependence of the oscillation amplitudes reveals effective masses m*($α$)=0.71 and m*($β$)=0.99 m$_e$, which are enhanced over the calculated band mass by $λ^{cyc}$ of 0.8. We find a similar enhancement $λ^γ \approx 1$ in comparing the measured electronic specific heat ($γ= 11.5$ mJ/mol K$^2$) with the total DOS from band structure calculations. Remarkably, very similar mass enhancements have been reported in other pnictides LaFe$_2$P$_2$, LaFePO ($T_c \approx 4K$), and LaRuPO, independent of whether they are superconducting or not. This is contrary to the common perceptions that the normal state quasi-particle renormalizations reflect the strength of the superconducting paring mechanism and leads to new questions about pairing in isostructural and isoelectronic Ru- and Fe-pnictide superconductors.

We report on angle-resolved magnetization measurements on NdFeAsO$_{0.65}$F$_{0.35}$ (Nd-1111) single crystals. The field dependence of the critical current density, $J_c$, is non-monotonous in these crystals at all orientations and temperatures due to the fishtail effect, which strongly influences the angular dependence of $J_c$. The currents decrease as the field is tilted from the crystallographic c-axis at low fields, but increase at high fields. A peak occurs in the angular dependence of $J_c$ at intermediate fields. The critical currents are significantly enhanced after irradiation with fast neutrons and the fishtail disappears. The different current anisotropies at low and high fields, however, persist. We discuss the data in the framework of the anisotropic scaling approach and propose a transition from dominant pinning by large defects of low density at low fields to pinning by small defects of high density at high fields in the pristine crystal. Strong pinning dominates at all fields after the irradiation, and the angular dependence of $J_c$ can be described by anisotropic scaling only after an appropriate extension to this pinning regime.

Sharp peaks are observed at a critical angle $θ_c$ at either side of $θ=90^{\circ}$, where $θ$ is the angle between $H$ and the inter-planar \emph{c}-axis. $θ_c$ is interpreted as the critical depinning angle where the vortex lattice, pinned and locked by the intrinsic planar structure, unlocks and acquires a component perpendicular to the planes. We observe a series of smaller replica peaks as a function of $θ$ and as $θ$ is swept away from the planar direction. These suggest commensurability effects between the period of the vortex lattice and the inter-planar distance leading to additional kinked vortex configurations.

Single crystals of MgCNi$_3$, with areas sized up to 1 mm$^{2}$, were grown by the self flux method using a cubic anvil high pressure technique. The first critical field \textit{H$_{c1}$}, determined from a zero temperature extrapolation, is around 18 mT. Using the tunnel - diode resonator technique, the London penetration depth was measured with no applied \textit{dc} field and the Campbell penetration depth was measured with the external \textit{dc} fields up to 9T for two different sample orientations with respect to the direction of applied magnetic field. The absolute value of the London penetration depth, $λ(0) = 245 \pm 10$ nm was determined from the thermodynamic Rutgers formula. The superfluid density, $ρ_s=(λ(0)/λ(T))^2$ was found to follow the clean isotropic \textit{s}-wave behavior predicted by the weak - coupling BCS theory in the whole temperature range. The low - temperature behavior of the London penetration depth fits the BCS analytic form as well and produces close to the weak - coupling value of $Δ(0)/k_BT_c = 1.71$. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field, \textit{$H_{c2}$}, was found to be isotropic with a slope at \textit{T$_c$} of -2.63 T/K and \textit{H$_{c2}$}(0) $\approx$ 12.3 T at zero temperature. The Campbell penetration depth probes the vortex lattice response in the mixed state and is sensitive to the details of the pinning potential. For MgCNi$_3$, an irreversible feature has been observed in the TDR response when the sample is field-cooled and warmed versus zero-field-cooled and warmed. This feature possesses a non-monotonic field dependence and has commonly been referred to as the peak effect and is most likely related to a field - dependent non - parabolic pinning potential.

Hydrostatic pressure Raman measurements have been carried out on the SmFeAsO series of oxypnictides with varying amount of do** (F substitution for O and Co for Fe) and transition temperature (T_{c}), in order to investigate lattice modifications and their connection to do** and superconductivity. Synchrotron XRD data on some of these compounds indicated that at low do** the lattice constants vary smoothly with pressure, but with increasing F concentration there is a deviation from the normal equation of state and these effects are related with modifications in the superconducting FeAs4 tetrahedra. The hydrostatic pressure Raman measurements show that the A1g mode of the rare earth atom for the superconducting compounds deviates from the linear pressure dependence at the same pressures where the XRD results indicate pressure-induced lattice anomalies. A similar anomaly is found for the As phonon of same symmetry. As in cuprates, the effect is diminished in the undoped compounds and it is not related with the F substitution being present in the Sm(Fe_{1-x}Co_{x})AsO as well. The calculated Grüneisen parameter for the Sm phonon ({γ\approx}1.5) is very similar to the corresponding values of cuprates and it does not vary with do**. For the Fe mode it has higher value ({γ\approx}1.8) than for As ({γ\approx}1) indicating a more anharmonic phonon.

Single crystals of the LnFeAsO (Ln1111, Ln = Pr, Nd, and Sm) family with lateral dimensions up to 1 mm were grown from NaAs and KAs flux at high pressure. The crystals are of good structural quality and become superconducting when O is partially substituted by F (PrFeAsO1-xFx and NdFeAsO1-xFx) or when Fe is substituted by Co (SmFe1-xCoxAsO). From magnetization measurements, we estimate the temperature dependence and anisotropy of the upper critical field and the critical current density of underdoped PrFeAsO0.7F0.3 crystal with Tc = 25 K. Single crystals of SmFe1-xCoxAsO with maximal Tc up to 16.3 K for x = 0.08 were grown for the first time. From transport and magnetic measurements we estimate the critical fields and their anisotropy, and find these superconducting properties to be quite comparable to the ones in SmFeAsO1-xFx with a much higher Tc of = 50 K. The magnetically measured critical current densities are as high as 109 A/m2 at 2 K up to 7 T, with indication of the usual fishtail effect. The upper critical field estimated from resistivity measurements is anisotropic with slopes of -8.7 T/K (H // ab-plane) and -1.7 T/K (H // c-axis). This anisotropy (= 5) is similar to that in other Ln1111 crystals with various higher Tc s.

The magnetic phase diagram of EuFe$_{2}$(As$_{1-x}$P$_{x}$)$_{2}$ was investigated by means of magnetization and muon-spin rotation studies as a function of chemical (isovalent substitution of As by P) and hydrostatic pressure. The magnetic phase diagrams of the magnetic ordering of the Eu and Fe spins with respect to P content and hydrostatic pressure are determined and discussed. The present investigations reveal that the magnetic coupling between the Eu and the Fe sublattices strongly depends on chemical and hydrostatic pressure. It is found that chemical and hydrostatic pressure have a similar effect on the Eu and Fe magnetic order.

Polycrystalline samples and single crystals of SmFeAs1-xPxO1-y were synthesized and grown employing different synthesis methods and annealing conditions. Depending on the phosphorus and oxygen content, the samples are either magnetic or superconducting. In the fully oxygenated compounds the main impact of phosphorus substitution is to suppress the Néel temperature TN of the spin density wave (SDW) state, and to strongly reduce the local magnetic field in the SDW state, as deduced from muon spin rotation measurements. On the other hand the superconducting state is observed in the oxygen deficient samples only after heat treatment under high pressure. Oxygen deficiency as a result of synthesis at high pressure brings the Sm-O layer closer to the superconducting As/P-Fe-As/P block and provides additional electron transfer. Interestingly, the structural modifications in response to this variation of the electron count are significantly different when phosphorus is partly substituting arsenic. Point contact spectra are well described with two superconducting gaps. Magnetic and resistance measurements on single crystals indicate an in-plane magnetic penetration depth of 200 nm and an anisotropy of the upper critical field slope of 4-5. To probe manifestations of multiband superconductivity in oxypnictides, we measured the angular dependence of the magnetic torque $τ(θ)$ in the mixed state of LaO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$FeAs single crystals as a function of temperature $T$ and magnetic fields $H$ up to 18 T. The paramagnetic contribution of the Fe ions is properly treated in order to extract the effective mass anisotropy parameter $γ=(m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}$ from $τ(θ)$. We show that $γ$ depends strongly on both $T$ and $H$, reaching a maximum value of $\sim$ 10 followed by a decrease towards values close to 1 as $T$ is lowered. The observed field dependencies of the London penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ and $γ$ suggest the onset of suppression of a superconducing gap at $H \approx H_{c2}/3$.

The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity in LaFeAsO_0.945F_0.055 was studied as a function of hydrostatic pressure up to p~2.4GPa by means of muon-spin rotation (\muSR) and magnetization measurements. The application of pressure leads to a substantial decrease of the magnetic ordering temperature T_N and a reduction of the magnetic phase volume and, at the same time, to a strong increase of the superconducting transition temperature T_c and the diamagnetic susceptibility. From the volume sensitive \muSR measurements it can be concluded that the superconducting and the magnetic areas which coexist in the same sample are inclined towards spatial separation and compete for phase volume as a function of pressure.

The low-temperature antiferromagnetic state of the Sm-ions in both nonsuperconducting SmFeAsO and superconducting SmFeAsO$_{0.9}$F$_{0.1}$ single crystals was studied by magnetic torque, magnetization, and magnetoresistance measurements in magnetic fields up to 60~T and temperatures down to 0.6~K. We uncover in both compounds a distinct rearrangement of the antiferromagnetically ordered Sm-moments near $35-40$~T. This is seen in both, static and pulsed magnetic fields, as a sharp change in the sign of the magnetic torque, which is sensitive to the magnetic anisotropy and hence to the magnetic moment in the $ab$-plane, ({\it i.e.} the FeAs-layers), and as a jump in the magnetization for magnetic fields perpendicular to the conducting planes. This rearrangement of magnetic ordering in $35-40$~T is essentially temperature independent and points towards a canted or a partially polarized magnetic state in high magnetic fields. However, the observed value for the saturation moment above this rearrangement, suggests that the complete suppression of the antiferromagnetism related to the Sm-moments would require fields in excess of 60~T. Such a large field value is particularly remarkable when compared to the relatively small Néel temperature $T_{\rm N}\simeq5$~K, suggesting very anisotropic magnetic exchange couplings. At the transition, magnetoresistivity measurements show a crossover from positive to negative field-dependence, indicating that the charge carriers in the FeAs planes are sensitive to the magnetic configuration of the rare-earth elements. This is indicates a finite magnetic/electronic coupling between the SmO and the FeAs layers which are likely to mediate the exchange interactions leading to the long range antiferromagnetic order of the Sm ions.

A combination of x-ray diffraction, magnetization, and 75As nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments were performed on single-crystal EuFe1.9Co0.1As2. The strength of the hyperfine interaction between the 75As nuclei and the Eu^(2+) 4f states suggests a strong coupling between the Eu^(2+) moments and the Fe1.9Co0.1As2 layers. Such a strong interlayer coupling may be due to an indirect exchange interaction between the localized Eu^(2+) 4f moments, mediated by the Fe 3d conduction electrons. Magnetic susceptibility as well as 75As-NMR measurements reveal a decrease of the SDW transition temperature to T_SDW = 120 K as a result of Co do**. A change of the slope in the temperature dependence of the NMR frequency of the 75As lower-satellite line was observed at 225 K. At the same temperature also a change of the satellite line shape was found. These changes of the NMR spectra may be caused by the formation of a nematic phase below 225 K in EuFe1.9Co0.1As2.

The parent GdOFeAs compound exhibits Fe long-range magnetic order below 128 K, whereas both doped samples do not show such order and are superconducting with T$_c$ = 20 K (x = 0.07) and T$_c$ = 45 K (x = 0.14). The Gd$^{3+}$ HF-ESR reveals an appreciable exchange coupling between Gd and Fe moments, through which the static magnetic order is clearly seen in the parent compound. Owing to this coupling, HF-ESR can probe sensitively the evolution of the magnetism in the FeAs planes upon F do**. It is found that in both superconducting samples, where the Fe long-range order is absent, there are short-range, static on the ESR time scale magnetic correlations between Fe spins. Their occurrence on a large do** scale may be indicative of the ground states' coexistence.

The superconducting and magnetic properties of Fe$_{y}$Se$_{0.25}$Te$_{0.75}$ single crystals ($0.9\leq y \leq1.1$) were studied by means of x-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometry, muon spin rotation, and elastic neutron diffraction. The samples with $y<1$ exhibit coexistence of bulk superconductivity and incommensurate magnetism. The magnetic order remains incommensurate for $y\geq 1$, but with increasing Fe content superconductivity is suppressed and the magnetic correlation length increases. The results show that the superconducting and the magnetic properties of the Fe$_{y}$Se$_{1-x}$Te$_{x}$ can be tuned not only by varying the Se/Te ratio but also by changing the Fe content.

Here, we present a de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect1 study on the newly discovered LaFeAsO1-xFx compounds2,3 in order to unveil the topography of the Fermi surface associated with their antiferromagnetic and superconducting phases, which is essential for understanding their magnetism, pairing symmetry and superconducting mechanism. Calculations 4 and surface-sensitive measurements 5,6,7 provided early guidance, but lead to contradictory results, generating a need for a direct experimental probe of their bulk Fermi surface. In antiferromagnetic LaFeAsO1-xFx 8,9 we observe a complex pattern in the Fourier spectrum of the oscillatory component superimposed onto the magnetic torque signal revealing a reconstructed Fermi surface, whose geometry is not fully described by band structure calculations. Surprisingly, several of the same frequencies, or Fermi surface cross-sectional areas, are also observed in superconducting LaFeAsO1-xFx (with a superconducting transition temperature Tc ~ 15 K). Although one could attribute this to inhomogeneous F do**, the corresponding effective masses are largely enhanced with respect to those of the antiferromagnetic compound. Instead, this implies the microscopic coexistence of superconductivity and antiferromagnetism on the same Fermi surface in the underdoped region of the phase diagram of the LaFeAsO1-xFx series. Thus, the dHvA-effect reveals a more complex Fermi surface topography than that predicted by band structure calculations4 upon which the currently proposed superconducting pairing scenarios10,11,12,13 are based, which could be at the origin of their higher Tcs when compared to their phosphide analogs.

Superconducting poly- and single-crystalline samples of Sm1-xThxFeAsO with partial substitution of Sm3+ by Th4+ were synthesized and grown under high pressure and their structural, magnetic and transport properties are studied. The superconducting Tc reaches values higher than 50 K. Bulk superconducting samples (x = 0.08, 0.15, 0.3) do not show any signs of a phase transition from tetragonal to orthorhombic crystal structure at low temperatures. With Th substitution the unit cell parameters a and c shrink and the fractional atomic coordinate of the As site zAs remains almost unchanged, while that of Sm/Th zSm/Th increases. Upon warming from 5 K to 295 K the expansion of the FeAs layer thickness is dominant, while the changes in the other structural building blocks are smaller by a factor of 1/5, and they compensate each other, since the As-Sm/Th distance appears to contract by about the same amount as the O-Sm/Th expands. The poly- and single-crystalline samples are characterized by a full diamagnetic response in low magnetic field, by a high intergrain critical-current density for polycrystalline samples, and by a critical current density of the order of 8 x 105 A/cm2 for single crystals at 2 K in fields up to 7 T. The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy γλ increases with decreasing temperature, a similar behavior to that of SmFeAsO1-xFy single crystals. The upper critical field estimated from resistance measurements is anisotropic with slopes of 5.4 T/K (H//ab plane) and 2.7 T/K (H//c axis), at temperatures sufficiently far below Tc. The upper critical field anisotropy γH is in the range of 2, consistent with the tendency of a decreasing γH with decreasing temperature, already reported for SmFeAsO1-xFy single crystals.

Iron-chalcogenide single crystals with the nominal composition FeSe$_{0.5}$Te$_{0.5}$ and a transition temperature of $T_{c}\simeq14.6$ K were synthesized by the Bridgman method. The structural and anisotropic superconducting properties of those crystals were investigated by means of single crystal X-ray and neutron powder diffraction, SQUID and torque magnetometry, and muon-spin rotation. Room temperature neutron powder diffraction reveals that 95% of the crystal volume is of the same tetragonal structure as PbO. The structure refinement yields a stoichiometry of Fe_1.045Se_0.406Te_0.594. Additionally, a minor hexagonal Fe_7Se_8 impurity phase was identified. The magnetic penetration depth λat zero temperature was found to be 491(8) nm in the ab-plane and 1320(14) nm along the c-axis. The zero-temperature value of the superfluid density ρ_s(0) λ^-2(0) obeys the empirical Uemura relation observed for various unconventional superconductors, including cuprates and iron-pnictides. The temperature dependences of both λ_ab and λ_c are well described by a two-gap s+s-wave model with the zero-temperature gap values of Δ_S(0)=0.51(3) meV and Δ_L(0)=2.61(9) meV for the small and the large gap, respectively. The magnetic penetration depth anisotropy parameter γ_λ(T)=λ_c(T)/λ_{ab}(T) increases with decreasing temperature, in agreement with γ_λ(T) observed in the iron-pnictide superconductors.

The effects of high-temperature vacuum-annealing induced Mg deficiency in MgB2 single crystals grown under high pressure were investigated. As the annealing temperature was increased from 800 to 975 C, the average Mg content in the MgB2 crystals systematically decreased, while Tc remains essentially unchanged and the superconducting transition slightly broadens from 0.55 K to 1.3 K. The reduction of the superconducting volume fraction was noticeable already after annealing at 875 C. Samples annealed at 975 C are partially decomposed and the Mg site occupancy is decreased to 0.92 from 0.98 in as-grown crystals. Annealing at 1000 C completely destroys superconductivity. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the main final product of decomposition is polycrystalline MgB4 and thus the decomposition reaction of MgB2 can be described as 2MgB2(s) = MgB4(s) + Mg(g). First-principles calculations of the Mg1-x(VMg)xB2 electronic structure, within the supercell approach, show a small downshift of the Fermi level. Holes induced by the vacancies go to both sigma and pi bands. These small modifications are not expected to influence Tc, in agreement with observations. The significant reduction of the superconducting volume fraction without noticeable Tc reduction indicates the coexistence, within the same crystal, of superconductive and non-superconductive electronic phases, associated with regions rich and poor in Mg vacancies.

In the undoped single crystals a single relaxation process is observed, showing a remarkable critical slowing down of the QP relaxation dynamics at the SDW transition temperature T_{SDW}\simeq125{K}. In the superconducting (SC) crystals multiple relaxation processes are present, with distinct SC state quasiparticle recombination dynamics exhibiting a BCS-like T-dependent superconducting gap, and a pseudogap (PG)-like feature with an onset above 180K indicating the existence of a pseudogap of magnitude 2Δ_{\mathrm{PG}}\simeq120 meV above T_{\mathrm{c}}. From the pump-photon energy dependence we conclude that the SC state and PG relaxation channels are independent, implying the presence of two separate electronic subsystems. We discuss the data in terms of spatial inhomogeneity and multi-band scenarios, finding that the latter is more consistent with the present data.

The upper critical field deduced from resistance measurements is anisotropic with slopes of 7.1(3) T/K (H || ab-plane) and 4.2(2) T/K (H || c-axis), sufficiently far below T_c. The extracted upper critical field anisotropy of 3 close to T_c, is in good agreement with the estimate from magnetic torque measurements. This indicates that the electronic properties in the doped BaFe_2As_2 compound are significantly more isotropic than those in the LnFeAsO family. The in-plane critical current density at 5 K exceeds 10^6 A/cm^2, making Ba_{1-x}Rb_xFe_2As_2 a promising candidate for technical applications.

Here, we report an overview of the phase diagram of single layered and double layered Fe arsenide superconductors at high magnetic fields. Our systematic magnetotransport measurements of polycrystalline SmFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ at different do** levels confirm the upward curvature of the upper critical magnetic field $H_{c2}(T)$ as a function of temperature $T$ defining the phase boundary between the superconducting and metallic states for crystallites with the ab planes oriented nearly perpendicular to the magnetic field. We further show from measurements on single crystals that this feature, which was interpreted in terms of the existence of two superconducting gaps, is ubiquitous among both series of single and double layered compounds. In all compounds explored by us the zero temperature upper critical field $H_{c2}(0)$, estimated either through the Ginzburg-Landau or the Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg single gap theories, strongly surpasses the weak coupling Pauli paramagnetic limiting field. This clearly indicates the strong coupling nature of the superconducting state and the importance of magnetic correlations for these materials. Our measurements indicate that the superconducting anisotropy, as estimated through the ratio of the effective masses $γ= (m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}$ for carriers moving along the c-axis and the ab planes, respectively, is relatively modest as compared to the high-$T_c$ cuprates, but it is temperature, field and even do** dependent. Finally, our preliminary estimations of the irreversibility field $H_m(T)$, separating the vortex-solid from the vortex-liquid phase in the single layered compounds, indicates that it is well described by the melting of a vortex lattice in a moderately anisotropic uniaxial superconductor.

A review of our investigations on single crystals of LnFeAsO1-xFx (Ln=La, Pr, Nd, Sm, Gd) and Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 is presented. A high pressure technique has been applied for the growth of LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals, while Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 crystals were grown using quartz ampoule method. Single crystals were used for electrical transport, structure, magnetic torque and spectroscopic studies. Investigations of the crystal structure confirmed high structural perfection and show less than full occupation of the (O, F) position in superconducting LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals. Resistivity measurements on LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals show a significant broadening of the transition in high magnetic fields, whereas the resistive transition in Ba1 xRbxFe2As2 simply shifts to lower temperature. Critical current density for both compounds is relatively high and exceeds 2x109 A/m2 at 15 K in 7 T. The anisotropy of magnetic penetration depth, measured on LnFeAsO1-xFx crystals by torque magnetometry is temperature dependent and apparently larger than the anisotropy of the upper critical field. Ba1-xRbxFe2As2 crystals are electronically significantly less anisotropic. Point-Contact Andreev-Reflection spectroscopy indicates the existence of two energy gaps in LnFeAsO1-xFx. Scanning Tunneling Spectroscopy reveals in addition to a superconducting gap, also some feature at high energy (~20 meV).

An analysis of the data in terms of a recently proposed model for the anisotropic magnetization in the superconducting state, treating the penetration depth anisotropy differently than the upper critical field anisotropy, provides evidence that in the oxypnictide superconductors two distinct anisotropies are present. As a result the penetration depth anisotropy differs significantly in magnitude and in temperature dependence from the upper critical field anisotropy, analogous to MgB_2 but with a reversed sign of slope. This scenario strongly suggests a new multi-band mechanism in the novel class of oxypnictide high-temperature superconductors.

To probe manifestations of multiband superconductivity in oxypnictides, we measured the angular dependence of magnetic torque $τ(θ)$ in the mixed state of SmO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$FeAs single crystals as functions of temperature $T$ and high magnetic field $H$ up to 30 T. We show that the effective mass anisotropy parameter $γ$ extracted from $τ(θ)$, can be greatly overestimated if the strong paramagnetism of Sm or Fe ions is not properly taken into account. The correctly extracted $γ$ depends on both $T$ and $H$, saturating at $γ\simeq 9$ at lower temperatures. Neither the London penetration depth nor the superfluid density is affected by high fields fields up to the upper critical field. Our results indicate two strongly-coupled superconducting gaps of nearly equal magnitudes.

The magnitude of the minimum energy gap, $Δ_1=1.1\pm 0.1 k_BT_c$ at T=0 K, is significantly smaller than the BCS weak-coupling value suggesting that the gap is either strongly anisotropic or varies significantly between the different Fermi surface sheets. Our data fits well a two gap model with an additional larger gap of magnitude $Δ_2 = 1.8\pm0.2 k_BT_c$ which is associated with $\sim 80$% of the total superfluid density.

We study the extent of the reversible region in the vortex phase diagram of recently available RbOs$_2$O$_6$ single crystals \cite{Rogacki08a} by means of bulk magnetization measurements. We found that the irreversible magnetic response sets in at a field $H_{\rm irr}(T) \sim 0.3 H_{\rm c2}(T)$ for $0.5 \lesssim T/T_{\rm c} \lesssim 0.8$, yielding a reversible vortex region that is uncommonly wide in comparison with typical low-$T_{\rm c}$ materials. The relevance of thermal fluctuations is limited since we estimate a Ginzburg number $G_{\rm i} = 5 \times 10^{-7}$. However, the relevance of quenched disorder is unconventionally low since the critical-current density ratio at low fields and temperatures is of the order of that found in high-T$_{\rm c}$'s. We therefore conclude that an intrinsically low bulk pinning magnitude favors the existence of an unexpectedly wide reversible vortex region that seems to be generic to $β$-pyrochlores.

A series of experiments showed that the Na content depends not only on the pressure during the synthesis but also on the synthesis temperature and time. From a comparison of the Na-CCOC data with those of structurally related La214 cuprate superconductors we concluded that chlorine at the apical site is less effective that oxygen in supplying charge carriers to the CuO2 plans. As a result, the coupling between the CuO2 planes is weakened, the transition temperature Tc is reduced and the anisotropic nature is enhanced.

The effect of Li substitution for Mg and of Li-C co-substitution on the superconducting properties and crystal structure of MgB2 single crystals has been investigated. It has been found that hole do** with Li decreases the superconducting transition temperature Tc, but at a slower rate than electron do** with C or Al. Tc of MgB2 crystals with simultaneously substituted Li for Mg and C for B decreases more than in the case where C is substituted alone. This means that holes introduced by Li cannot counterbalance the effect of decrease of Tc caused by introduction of electrons coming from C. The possible reason of it can be that holes coming from Li occupy the pi band while electrons coming from C fill the sigma band. The temperature dependences of the upper critical field Hc2 for Al and Li substituted crystals with the same Tc show a similar dHc2/dT slope at Tc and a similar Hc2(T) behavior, despite of much different substitution level. This indicates that the mechanism controlling Hc2 and Tc is similar in both hole and electron doped crystals. Electrical transport measurements show an increase of resistivity both in Li substituted crystals and in Li and C co-substituted crystals. This indicates enhanced scattering due to defects introduced by substitutions including distortion of the lattice. The observed behavior can be explained as a result of two effects, influencing both Tc and Hc2. The first one is do** related to the changes in the carrier concentration, which may lead to the decrease or to the increase of Tc. The second one is related to the introduction of new scattering centers leading to the modification of the interband and/or intraband scattering and therefore, to changes in the superconducting gaps and to the reduction of Tc.

We present new results of point-contact Andreev-reflection (PCAR) spectroscopy in single-phase Mg_{1-x}Al_{x}B_{2} single crystals with x up to 0.32. Fitting the conductance curves of our point contacts with the two-band Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model allowed us to extract the gap amplitudes Delta_{sigma} and Delta_{pi}. The gap values agree rather well with other PCAR results in Al-doped crystals and polycrystals up to x=0.2 reported in literature, and extend them to higher Al contents. In the low-do** regime, however, we observed an increase in the small gap Delta_{pi} on increasing x (or decreasing the local critical temperature of the junctions, T_{c}^{A}) which is not as clearly found in other samples. On further decreasing T_{c}^{A} below 30 K, both the gaps decrease and, up to the highest do** level x=0.32 and down to T_{c}^{A}= 12 K, no gap merging is observed. A detailed analysis of the data within the two-band Eliashberg theory shows that this gap trend can be explained as being mainly due to the band filling and to an increase in the interband scattering which is necessary to account for the increase in Delta_{pi} at low Al contents (x < 0.1). We suggest to interpret the following decrease of Delta_{pi} for T_{c}^{A} < 30 K as being governed by the onset of inhomogeneity and disorder in the Al distribution that partly mask the intrinsic effects of do** and is not taken into account in standard theoretical approaches.
