Abstract:
By incorporating inert KCl into the Na$_2$IrO$_3$ + 2CuCl $\to$ Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ + 2NaCl topochemical reaction, we significantly reduced the synthesis temperature of Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ from the 350$^\circ$C reported in previous studies to 170$^\circ$C. This adjustment decreased the Cu/Ir antisite disorder concentration in Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ from $\sim$19$\%$ to $\sim$5$\%$. Furthermore, magnetic susceptibility…

Furthermore, magnetic susceptibility measurements of the present Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ sample revealed a weak ferromagnetic-like anomaly with hysteresis at a magnetic transition temperature of $\sim$70 K. Our research indicates that the spin-disordered ground state reported in chemically disordered Cu$_2$IrO$_3$ is an extrinsic phenomenon, rather than an intrinsic one, underscoring the pivotal role of synthetic chemistry in understanding the application of Kitaev model to realistic materials.

We have successfully synthesized four Mo$_3$O$_8$-type cluster Mott insulators (CMI) by intercalating lithium into nonmagnetic precursors to regulate the Mo$_3$ cluster valence. The resulting materials are Li$_{1+x}$$R$Mo$_3$O$_8$ ($R$ = Sc, Y, Lu) and Li$_x$Zn$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. Our magnetic susceptibility measurements revealed that these materials display characteristics akin to a valence bond glass state and suggest the presence of short-range ordering when the Mo$_3$ cluster valence approximates its ideal value. These findings challenge the prevailing belief that the plaquette charge ordering state is an inherent feature of Mo$_3$O$_8$-type CMI. Instead, they underscore the importance of Mo$_3$ cluster valence in determining the physical properties of these systems. These insights furnish a fresh understanding of the Mo$_3$O$_8$-type CMI and open new research opportunities in highly frustrated magnetism.

The sample quality of the hyperhoneycomb lattice Kitaev magnet $β$-ZnIrO$_3$ was successfully improved by removing the maximum amount of moisture from the reaction ampoule. The X-ray diffraction structural analysis of the high-quality sample confirmed the presence of $P$2$_1$/$c$ superlattice peaks of the Fddd structure in the original structural model. These peaks could not be distinguished due to the presence of impurities in the low-quality sample in a previous study. The structural analysis based on this monoclinic crystal structure model showed no chemical disorder, suggesting that the observed spin liquid type behavior is an intrinsic property unrelated to bond randomness. The details of the $β$-ZnIrO$_3$ structure revealed in this study will stimulate the further investigation of Kitaev physics.

In spinel-type nickelate NiRh$_2$O$_4$, magnetic ordering is observed upon the sample synthesized via kinetically controlled low-temperature solid-state metathesis, as opposed to previously-reported samples obtained through conventional solid-state reaction. Our findings are based on a combination of bulk susceptibility and specific heat measurements that disclose a N$é$el transition temperature of $T_N$ = 45 K in this material, which might feature spin-orbit entanglement in the tetragonally-coordinated $d^8$ Mott insulators. The emergence of magnetic ordering upon alteration of the synthesis route indicates that the suppression of magnetic ordering in the previous sample was rooted in the cation-mixing assisted by the entropy gain that results from high-temperature reactions. Furthermore, the $J_{\rm eff}$ = 0 physics, instead of solely the spin-only $S = 1$, describes the observed enhancement of effective magnetic moment well. Overseeing all observations and speculations, we propose that the possible mechanism responsible for the emergent magnetic orderings in NiRh$_2$O$_4$ is the condensation of $J_{\rm eff}$ = 0 exciton, driven by the interplay of the tetragonal crystal field and superexchange interactions.

The solid solution 122 compounds, Eu(Co$_{1-x}$Ni$_{x}$)$_{2}$P$_{2}$, show valence transition between divalent state and intermediate valence states at Eu, which is firmly correlated to multiple degrees of freedom in the solid such as the isostructural transition between the collapsed tetragonal (cT) and uncollapsed tetragonal (ucT) structures, $3d$ magnetism, and the formation of P-P dimers. To gain insights into the correlated behavior, we investigate the effect of high magnetic fields on the samples of $x = 0.4$ and $0.5$ using magnetostriction and magnetization measurements up to 60 T. The samples are in the Eu valence fluctuating regime, where the possible structural transition from cT to ucT may be induced by the Eu valence change under the magnetic fields. For both samples, magnetostriction smoothly increases with increasing magnetic fields. The behavior is in good agreement with the calculated results using the interconfigurational fluctuation (ICF) model that describes the valence change. This indicates that $ΔL$ represents the change of the Eu valence state in these compounds. Magnetization curves for both compounds show good agreement with the ICF model at high magnetic fields. In contrast, in the low magnetic field region, magnetization curves do not agree with the ICF model. These results indicate that the Eu valence changes manifest themselves in the magnetization curves at high magnetic fields and that the magnetism of the $3d$ electrons manifests itself in the magnetization at low magnetic fields. Hence, we conclude that the valence change occurs within the Eu valence fluctuation regime coupled with the cT structure. Thereby, we believe that the transition to ucT structure which is firmly coupled with the divalent Eu state does not occur within the magnetic field range of the present study. (Continued)

For each compound, the ground state is seemingly A-type antiferromagnetic order. At low temperatures, applying a magnetic field causes a metamagnetic-like transition described by the transition in which antiferromagnetically-aligned canted moments change to ferromagnetically-aligned ones. These ground and field-induced states include a canted ferromagnetic component perpendicular to the kagome planes favored by Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. These magnetic properties are well characterized by the J$_{eff}$ = 1/2 physics. Our findings will be the first step toward clarifying the J$_{eff}$ = 1/2 kagome physics, which has been little studied experimentally or theoretically.

Furthermore, crystal structure analysis reveals the formation of Ir zig-zag chains with metal-metal bonding, increasing kinetic energy resulting in the Mott collapse. This observation would be due to a Mott collapse induced in a $J_{\mathrm{eff}} = 1/2$ spin-orbit coupling Mott insulator with an Ir honeycomb lattice by topochemical control of the ionic configuration.

The magnetic properties of Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ at low temperatures were found to be weak ferromagnetic-like state for $x$ $<$ 0.3 and spin-glass state for $x$ $>$ 0.3. The small spontaneous magnetization that appears in the weak ferromagnetic-like phase would be due to the presence of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction or to the difference in the magnitude of the magnetic moment of Fe$^{3+}$ in the octahedral and trigonal bipyramidal sites. The appearance of the spin-glass phase indicates that the dilution of Fe ions by Al ions in Al$_x$Fe$_{2-x}$GeO$_5$ causes the competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. The $x$ dependence of the site occupancy of Fe ions suggests that Fe$_2$GeO$_5$ with andalusite structure cannot be synthesized.

A polycrystalline sample of the hyperhoneycomb iridate $β$-ZnIrO$_3$ was synthesized via a topochemical reaction, and its structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties were investigated. The magnetization and heat capacity data show the absence of long-range magnetic order at least down to 2 K. A positive Curie-Weiss temperature $θ_W \sim 45$ K probed by the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility indicates that a Kitaev interaction is dominant. These observations suggest that a quantum spin liquid may have been realized. Furthermore, the observation of linear temperature-dependent contribution to the heat capacity with no magnetic field effect evidences gapless excitation. These facts are surprisingly contrary to the chemical disorder evidenced by the crystallographic analysis. By discussing the differences in the size effect of Z$_2$-fluxes in 2D and 3D Kitaev magnets, we propose that there is a hidden mechanism to protect the quantum spin liquid state from chemical disorder.

A novel Ti3+-based thiospinel ZnTi2S4 is successfully synthesized via a low-temperature ion-exchange reaction. ZnTi2S4 shows a signature of metallic ground state evidenced by a contribution of conduction electrons in the heat capacity and Pauli-like paramagnetic susceptibility. These observations contrast to the electronic state of similar Ti3+-based spinel MgTi2O4 exhibiting the metal-insulator transition associated with a molecular orbital crystallization (MOC). Furthermore, the magnetic susceptibility of ZnTi2S4 shows a pseudogap-like behavior indicated by a vast peak in the magnetic susceptibility around 110 K, likely originating from the MOC fluctuation. The origin of the difference in the electronic states of MgTi2O4 and ZnTi2S4 would be due to the different magnitude of overlap between Ti 3d and p orbitals (O: 2p and S: 3p). The presence of a MOC state in the close vicinity of insulator-metal transition may suggest the importance of itinerancy in a MOC.

The isothermal remanent magnetization is recorded vs. temperature after intermittent application of a weak magnetic field at a constant temperature $T_h$. We observe that in the case of the Heisenberg spin glasses, the equilibrated spin structure and the direction of the excess moment are recovered at $T_h$. The isothermal remanent magnetization thus reflects the directional character of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction present in Heisenberg systems.

Our results show that the singularities at zero temperature due to the reversal-field memory effect are washed out by the finite temperatures of the experiments. The data are analyzed via the first order reversal curve (FORC) magnetic fingerprinting method. The experimental results are supported by Monte Carlo simulations of the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass at finite temperatures which agree qualitatively very well with the experimental results. This suggests that the hysteretic behavior of real Ising spin-glass materials is well described by the Edwards-Anderson Ising spin glass. Furthermore, reversal-field memory is a purely zero-temperature effect.

We have compared aging phenomena in the Fe_{0.5}Mn_{0.5}TiO_3 Ising spin glass and in the CdCr_{1.7}In_{0.3}S_4 Heisenberg-like spin glass by means of low-frequency ac susceptibility measurements. At constant temperature, aging obeys the same `$ωt$ scaling' in both samples as in other systems. Investigating the effect of temperature variations, we find that the Ising sample exhibits rejuvenation and memory effects which are qualitatively similar to those found in other spin glasses, indicating that the existence of these phenomena does not depend on the dimensionality of the spins. However, systematic temperature cycling experiments on both samples show important quantitative differences. In the Ising sample, the contribution of aging at low temperature to aging at a slightly higher temperature is much larger than expected from thermal slowing down. This is at variance with the behaviour observed until now in other spin glasses, which show the opposite trend of a free-energy barrier growth as the temperature is decreased. We discuss these results in terms of a strongly renormalized microscopic attempt time for thermal activation, and estimate the corresponding values of the barrier exponent $ψ$ introduced in the scaling theories.

The non-equilibrium dynamics of the model 3d-Ising spin glass
- Fe$_{0.55}$Mn$_{0.45}$TiO$_3$ - has been investigated from the temperature and time dependence of the zero field cooled magnetization recorded under certain thermal protocols. The results manifest chaos, rejuvenation and memory features of the equilibrating spin configuration that are very similar to those observed in corresponding studies of the archetypal RKKY spin glass Ag(Mn). The sample is rapidly cooled in zero magnetic field, and the magnetization recorded on re-heating. When a stop at constant temperature $T_s$ is made during the cooling, the system evolves toward its equilibrium state at this temperature. The equilibrated state established during the stop becomes frozen in on further cooling and is retrieved on re-heating. The memory of the aging at $T_s$ is not affected by a second stop at a lower temperature
$T'_s$. Reciprocally, the first equilibration at $T_s$ has no influence on the relaxation at $T'_s$, as expected within the droplet model for domain growth in a chaotic landscape.

The ground state of the stacked triangular antiferromagnet CsFeBr$_3$ is a spin singlet due to the large single ion anisotropy $D(S^z)^2$. The field-induced magnetic ordering in this compound was investigated by the magnetic susceptibility, the magnetization process and specific heat measurements for an external field parallel to the $c$-axis. Unexpectedly, two phase transitions were observed in the magnetic field $H$ higher than 3 T. The phase diagram for temperature versus magnetic field was obtained. The mechanism leading to the successive phase transitions is discussed.

Abstract:
Specific heat measurements have been performed in the coupled dimer system TlCuCl$_3$, which has a singlet ground state with the excitation gap $Δ\simeq 7.5$K. The cusplike anomaly indicative of the 3D magnetic ordering was clearly observed in magnetic fields higher than the critical field $H_c$ corresponding to the gap $Δ$. The phase boundary determined by the present specific heat measurements coincides with that determined by previous magnetization measurements. The phase boundary can be described by the power law $[ H_{\rm c}(T)-H_{\rm g} ] \propto T^φ$ with $φ=2.1(1)$. This result supports the magnon Bose condensation picture for the field-induced magnetic ordering in TlCuCl$_3$ [Nikuni {\it et al}., Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 84} (2000) 5868].

The temperature dependence of the observed data in a magnetic field below 6 T is well reproduced by numerical results calculated for the S=1/2 two-leg ladder with $J_{\rm{rung}}$/$J_{\rm{leg}}$=5. In the gapless region above 7 T ($H_{\rm{c1}}$), the agreement between experiment and calculation is good above about 2 K and a sharp and a round peak were observed below 2 K in a magnetic field around 10 T, but the numerical data show only a round peak, the magnitude of which is smaller than that of the observed one. The origin of the sharp peak and the difference between the experimental and numerical round peak are discussed.

Heat capacity measurements on the prototypical three-dimensional random-field Ising model compound Fe0.58Zn0.42F2 have been performed in both of the field-cooling (FC) and zero-field-cooling (ZFC) procedures. There is no evidence of hysteresis between the FC and ZFC protocols within the experimental accuracy. The absence of hysteresis is interpreted based on a magnetic field (H)-temperature (T) phase diagram in which a metastability region exists between the Neel temperature line Tn(H) and Hc1(T), the latter being the lowest critical field line for the local spin flips.
