Respiration driven CO2 pulses dominate Australia's flux variability

Abstract: The Australian continent contributes substantially to the year-to-year variability of the global terrestrial carbon dioxide (CO2) sink. However, the scarcity of in-situ observations in remote areas prevents deciphering the processes that force the CO2 flux variability. These pulses largely control the year-to-year variability of Australia's CO2 balance, due to 2-3 times higher seasonal variations compared to previous top-down inversions and bottom-up estimates. The CO2 pulses occur shortly after the onset of rainfall and are driven by enhanced soil respiration preceding photosynthetic uptake in Australia's semi-arid regions. The suggested continental-scale relevance of soil rewetting processes has large implications for our understanding and modelling of global climate-carbon cycle feedbacks. △ Less

Ultra-broadband surface-normal coherent optical receiver with nanometallic polarizers

Conventional waveguide-based coherent receivers, however, exhibit large footprints, difficulty in coupling a large number of spatial channels efficiently, and limited operating bandwidth imposed by the waveguide-base… ▽ More A coherent receiver that can demodulate high-speed in-phase and quadrature signals of light is an essential component for optical communication, interconnects, imaging, and computing. Conventional waveguide-based coherent receivers, however, exhibit large footprints, difficulty in coupling a large number of spatial channels efficiently, and limited operating bandwidth imposed by the waveguide-based optical hybrid. Here, we present a surface-normal coherent receiver with nanometallic-grating-based polarizers integrated directly on top of photodetectors without the need for an optical hybrid circuit. Using a fabricated device with the active section occupying a 70-μm-square footprint, we demonstrate demodulation of high-speed (up to 64 Gbaud) coherent signals in various formats. Moreover, ultra-broadband operation from 1260 nm to 1630 nm is demonstrated, thanks to the wavelength-insensitive nanometallic polarizers. To our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of a surface-normal homodyne optical receiver, which can easily be scaled to a compact two-dimensional arrayed device to receive highly parallelized coherent signals. △ Less

The analysis utilizes a method where the tag-side $B$ meson is reconstructed in a semileptonic decay mode, and the signal-side $τ$ is reconstructed in a purely leptonic decay. The measured values are $\mathcal{R}(D)= 0.307 \pm 0.037 \pm 0.016$ and $\mathcal{R}(D^{\ast})= 0.283 \pm 0.018 \pm 0.014$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are in agreement with the Standard Model predictions within $0.2$ and $1.1$ standard deviations, respectively, while their combination agrees with the Standard Model predictions within $1.2$ standard deviations. △ Less

Global current circuit structure in a resistive pulsar magnetosphere model

Abstract: Pulsar magnetospheres have strong magnetic fields and large amounts of plasma. The structures of these magnetospheres are studied using force-free electrodynamics. To understand pulsar magnetospheres, discussions must include their outer region. However, force-free electrodynamics is limited in it does not handle dissipation. Therefore, a resistive pulsar magnetic field model is needed. To break t… ▽ More Pulsar magnetospheres have strong magnetic fields and large amounts of plasma. However, force-free electrodynamics is limited in it does not handle dissipation. Therefore, a resistive pulsar magnetic field model is needed. To break the ideal magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) condition $E \cdot B = 0$, Ohm's law is used. In this work, I introduce resistivity depending upon the distance from the star and obtain a self-consistent steady state by time integration. Poloidal current circuits form in the magnetosphere while the toroidal magnetic-field region expands beyond the light cylinder and the Poynting flux radiation appears. High electric resistivity causes a large space scale poloidal current circuit and the magnetosphere radiates a larger Poynting flux than the linear increase outside of the light cylinder radius. The formed poloidal current circuit has width, which grows with the electric conductivity. This result contributes to a more concrete dissipative pulsar magnetosphere model. △ Less

Unfolded differential decay rates of four kinematic variables fully describing the $\bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell$ decay in the $B$-meson rest frame are presented. We measure the total branching fraction $\mathcal{B}( \bar B^0 \to D^{*\,+} \, \ell^- \, \bar ν_\ell ) = \left(4.95 \pm 0.11 \pm 0.22 \right) \times 10^{-2}$, where the errors are statistical and systematic respectively. The value of $\left|V_{cb} \right|$ is determined to be $\left( 37.4 \pm 1.3 \right) \times 10^{-3}$. Both results are in good agreement with current world averages. △ Less

Observation of Transverse $Λ/\barΛ$ Hyperon Polarization in $e^+e^-$ Annihilation at Belle

Abstract: We report the first observation of the polarization of $Λ/\barΛ$ hyperons transverse to its production plane in $e^+e^-$ annihilation. We observe a significant polarization that rises with the fractional energy carried by the hyperon as well as its transverse momentum. The results are based on a $121.4$ fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the center-of-mass energy near the $Υ(10860)$ peak and $16.4$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at 19 energy points in the range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV. The results are based on a $121.4$ fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the center-of-mass energy near the $Υ(10860)$ peak and $16.4$ fb$^{-1}$ of data collected at 19 energy points in the range from 10.77 to 11.02 GeV. We observe a clear $e^+e^-\toΥ(10860)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ signal, with no statistically significant signal of $e^+e^-\to Υ(11020)\to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$. The relative production ratio of $B_s^*\bar{B}_s^*$, $B_s\bar{B}_s^{*}$, and $B_s\bar{B}_s$ final states at $\sqrt{s}=10.866$ GeV is measured to be $7:$ $0.856\pm0.106(stat.)\pm0.053(syst.):$ $0.645\pm0.094(stat.)^{+0.030}_{-0.033}(syst.)$. Measurement of $CP$ asymmetry in the $D^{0} \to K^0_S K^0_S$ decay at Belle

Abstract: We report a measurement of the time-integrated $CP$ asymmetry in the neutral charm meson decay $D^0 \to K^0_S K^0_S$ using 921~fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ resonances with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. This latter uncertainty is dominated by the error of the normalisation channel. Abstract: We report a study of radiative decays of χ_{bJ}(1P)(J=0,1,2) mesons into 74 hadronic final states comprising charged and neutral pions, kaons, protons; out of these, 41 modes are observed with at least 5 standard deviation significance. Our measurements not only improve the previous measurements by the CLEO Collaboration but also lead to first observations in many new modes. Abstract: The process $γγ\to p \bar{p} K^+ K^-$ and its intermediate processes are measured for the first time using a 980~fb$^{-1}$ data sample collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. No signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of B(B0 -> phi gamma) < 1.0 x 10^{-7} at 90% confidence level. This is the most stringent limit on this decay mode to date. We measure visible cross sections for the three-body production of sigma_vis(e+e- => [B B*-bar+c.c.]+-pi-+=(11.2+-1.0(stat.)+-1.2(syst.)) pb and sigma_vis(e+e- => [B*B*-bar]+-pi-+)=(5.61+-0.73(stat.)+-0.66(syst.)) pb and set a 90% C.L. upper limit of sigma_vis(e+e- => [BB-bar]+-pi-+)<2.1 pb. Abstract: We report inclusive and exclusive measurements for $χ_{c1}$ and $χ_{c2}$ production in $B$ decays. Using these decay modes, we observe a difference in the production mechanism of $χ_{c2}$ in comparison to $χ_{c1}$ in $B$ decays. In addition, we report searches for $X(3872)$ and $χ_{c1}(2P)$ in the $B^+ \to (χ_{c1} π^+ π^-) K^+$ decay mode. One $B$ meson in the event is fully reconstructed in a hadronic decay mode while the other, on the signal side, is partially reconstructed from a charged lepton and either a $D^+$ or $D^0$ meson in a total of 23 hadronic decay modes. The isospin-averaged branching fraction of the decay $B\to D\ellν_\ell$ is found to be $\mathcal{B}(B^0 \to D^- \ell^+ ν_{\ell})=(2.31\pm 0.03(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.11(\mathrm{syst}))\%$. Analyzing the differential decay rate as a function of the hadronic recoil with the parameterization of Caprini, Lelouch and Neubert and using the form-factor prediction $\mathcal{G}(1)=1.0541\pm 0.0083$ calculated by FNAL/MILC, we obtain $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(40.12\pm 1.34)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_\mathrm{EW}$ is the electroweak correction factor. Alternatively, assuming the model-independent form-factor parameterization of Boyd, Grinstein and Lebed and using lattice QCD data from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations, we find $η_\mathrm{EW}|V_{cb}|=(41.10 \pm 1.14)\times 10^{-3}$. △ Less

Abstract: We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons ($e^+e^- \rightarrow hhX$) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The dependence of these di-hadron cross sections on the topology (same, opposite-hemisphere or anywhere) is also studied with the help of the event shape… ▽ More We report the first double differential cross sections of two charged pions and kaons ($e^+e^- \rightarrow hhX$) in electron-positron annihilation as a function of the fractional energies of the two hadrons for any charge and hadron combination. The ratios of these di-hadron cross sections for different charges and hadron combinations directly shed light on the contributing fragmentation functions. For example, we find that the ratio of same-sign pion pairs over opposite-sign pion pairs drops toward higher fractional energies where disfavored fragmentation is expected to be suppressed. These di-hadron results are obtained from a $655\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. Abstract: We report a measurement of the branching fraction ratios R(D(*)) of Bbar -> D(*) tau- nubar_tau relative to Bbar -> D()* l- nubar_l (where l = e or mu) using the full Belle data sample of 772 x 10^6 BBbar pairs collected at the Y(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e+e- collider. Abstract: We present an extraction of azimuthal correlations between two pairs of charged pions detected in opposite jets from electron-positron annihilation. These correlations may arise from the dependence of the di-pion fragmentation on the polarization of the parent quark in the process $e^+e^- \rightarrow q \bar{q}$. The measurement of this modulation allows access to combinations of fragmentation functions that are sensitive to the quark's transverse polarization and helicity. Within our uncertainties we do not observe a significant signal from the previously unmeasured helicity dependent fragmentation function $G_1^\perp$. In addition, we report negative results from a search for hypothesized neutral ($Z^0$) and doubly charged ($Z^{++}$) isospin partners of the $D_{s0}^{*+}(2317)$ and provide upper limits on the product branching fractions ${\mathcal B}(B^0 \rightarrow D^0 z^0)\times{\mathcal B}(z^0\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^-)$ and ${\mathcal B}(B^+\rightarrow D^- z^{++})\times{\mathcal B}(z^{++}\rightarrow D_s^{+}π^+)$ that are more than an order of magnitude smaller than theoretical expectations for the hypotheses that the $D_{s0} ^{*+}(2317)$ is a member of an isospin triplet. The measurement also provides an estimate of the $B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}$ production cross-section, $σ(e^+e^- \to B_s^{(*)}\bar{B}_s^{(*)}) = (53.8 \pm 1.4 (\text{stat}) \pm 4.0 (\text{syst}) \pm 3.4 (\text{ext}))\,{\rm pb}$, at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 10.86\,{\rm GeV}$. △ Less

Using the full data sample of $772\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at KEKB accelerator the upper limit is $r_S < 0.87$ at the 68 % confidence level. This result is the first measurement of $r_S$ with a model-independent Dalitz analysis, and is consistent with results from other analyses. The value of $r_S$ indicates the sensitivity of the decay to $φ_3$ because the statistical uncertainty is proportional to $1/r_S$. The $r_S$ result is obtained from observables ($x_\pm$, $y_\pm$) \begin{eqnarray} x_- &=& +0.4 ^{+1.0 +0.0}_{-0.6 -0.1} \pm0.0 \\ y_- &=& -0.6 ^{+0.8 +0.1}_{-1.0 -0.0} \pm0.1 \\ x_+ &=& +0.1 ^{+0.7 +0.0}_{-0.4 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ y_+ &=& +0.3 ^{+0.5 +0.0}_{-0.8 -0.1} \pm0.1 \\ , \end{eqnarray} where $x_\pm = r_S \cos(δ_S \pm φ_3)$, $y_\pm = r_S \sin(δ_S \pm φ_3)$ and $φ_3 (δ_S)$ are the weak (strong) phase difference between $B^0 \to D^0K^{*0}$ and $B^0 \to \bar{D^0}K^{*0}$. Abstract: We report the first observation of $B^0 \to X(3872) (K^{+}π^{-})$ and evidence for $B^+ \to X(3872) (K^{0}π^{+})$. We measure the product of branching fractions for the former to be ${\cal B}(B^0 \to X(3872) (K^+ π^-)) \times {\cal B}(X(3872) \to J/ψπ^+ π^-) = (7.9 \pm 1.3(\mbox{stat.})\pm 0.4(\mbox{syst.})) \times 10^{-6}$ and find that $B^{0}\to X(3872) K^{*}(892)^{0}$ does not dominate the $B^{0}\to X(3872)K^{+}π^{-}$ decay mode. We also measure ${\cal B}(B^+ \to X(3872) (K^0 π^+)) \times {\cal B}(X(3872) \to J/ψπ^+ π^-) = (10.6 \pm 3.0(\mbox{stat.}) \pm 0.9(\mbox{syst.})) \times 10^{-6}$. Search for B decays to final states with the eta_c meson

Abstract: We report a search for $B$ decays to selected final states with the $η_c$ meson: $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_cπ^+π^-$, $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_cω$, $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_cη$ and $B^{\pm}\to K^{\pm}η_cπ^0$. The $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrowφγ$ branching fraction is measured to be $(3.6 \pm 0.5 (\mathrm{stat.}) \pm 0.3 (\mathrm{syst.}) \pm 0.6 (f_{s})) \times 10^{-5}$, where $f_{s}$ is the fraction of $B_{s}^{(*)}\bar{B}_{s}^{(*)}$ in $b\bar{b}$ events. Our result is in good agreement with the theoretical predictions as well as with a recent measurement from LHCb. We observe no statistically significant signal for the decay $B_{s}^{0}\rightarrowγγ$ and set a $90\%$ confidence-level upper limit on its branching fraction at $ 3.1 \times 10^{-6}$.
