Abstract:
We study the low-energy electronic structure of three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, Cd$_3$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ [$x$ = 0 and 0.34(3)], by employing the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We observe that the bulk Dirac states in Cd$_3$(As$_{0.66}$P$_{0.34}$)$_2$ are gapped out with an energy of 0.23 eV, contrary to the parent Cd$_3$As$_2$ in which the gapless Dirac states have been o…

We observe that the bulk Dirac states in Cd$_3$(As$_{0.66}$P$_{0.34}$)$_2$ are gapped out with an energy of 0.23 eV, contrary to the parent Cd$_3$As$_2$ in which the gapless Dirac states have been observed. Thus, our results confirm the earlier predicted topological phase transition in Cd$_3$As$_2$ with perturbation. We further notice that the critical P substitution concentration, at which the two Dirac points that are spread along the $c$-axis in Cd$_3$As$_2$ form a single Dirac point at $Γ$, is much lower [x$_c$(P)$<$ 0.34(3)] than the predicted value of x$_c$(P)=0.9. Therefore, our results suggest that the nontrivial band topology of Cd$_3$As$_2$ is remarkably sensitive to the P substitution and can only survive over a narrow substitution range, i.e., 0 $\leq$ x (P) $<$ 0.34(3).

Materials with a 5d4 electronic configuration are generally considered to have a nonmagnetic ground state (J=0). Interestingly, Sr2YIrO6 (Ir5+ having 5d4 electronic configuration) was recently reported to exhibit long-range magnetic order at low temperature and the distorted IrO6 octahedra were discussed to cause the magnetism in this material. Hence, a comparison of structurally distorted Sr2YIrO6 with cubic Ba2YIrO6 may shed light on the source of magnetism in such Ir5+ materials with 5d4 configuration. Besides, Ir5+ materials having 5d4 are also interesting in the context of recently predicted excitonic types of magnetism. Here we report a single-crystal-based analysis of the structural, magnetic, and thermodynamic properties of Ba2YIrO6. We observe that in Ba2YIrO6 for temperatures down to 0.4 K, long-range magnetic order is absent but at the same time correlated magnetic moments are present. We show that these moments are absent in fully relativistic ab initio band-structure calculations; hence, their origin is presently unclear.

Hard x-ray scattering (HXS) experiments with a photon energy of 100keV were performed as a function of temperature and applied magnetic field on selected compounds of the RFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ family. The results show the presence of several unexpected diffraction features, in particular non-resonant magnetic reflections in the magnetically ordered phase, and structural reflections that violate the diffraction conditions for the low temperature phase $P3_121$ of the rare-earth iron borates. The temperature and field dependence of the magnetic superlattice reflections corroborate the magnetic structures of the borate compounds obtained by neutron diffraction. The detailed analysis of the intensity and scattering cross section of the magnetic reflection reveals details of the magnetic structure of these materials such as the spin domain structure of NdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$ and GdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$. Furthermore we find that the correlation length of the magnetic domains is around 100 Å for all the compounds and that the Fe moments are rotated $53^\circ\pm3^\circ$ off from the hexagonal basal plane in GdFe$_3$(BO$_3$)$_4$

In this paper we demonstrate the application of high magnetic fields to study the magnetic properties of low dimensional spin systems. We present a case study on the series of 2-leg spin-ladder compounds Na$_2$T$_2$(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$(H$_2$O)$_2$ with T = Ni, Co, Fe and Mn. In all compounds the transition metal is in the $T^{2+}$ high spin configuation. The localized spin varies from S=1 to 3/2, 2 and 5/2 within this series. The magnetic properties were examined experimentally by magnetic susceptibility, pulsed high field magnetization and specific heat measurements. The data are analysed using a spin hamiltonian description. Although the transition metal ions form structurally a 2-leg ladder, an isolated dimer model consistently describes the observations very well. This behaviour can be understood in terms of the different coordination and superexchange angles of the oxalate ligands along the rungs and legs of the 2-leg spin ladder. All compounds exhibit magnetic field driven ground state changes which at very low temperatures lead to a multistep behaviour in the magnetization curves. In the Co and Fe compounds a strong axial anisotropy induced by the orbital magnetism leads to a nearly degenerate ground state and a strongly reduced critical field. We find a monotonous decrease of the intradimer magnetic exchange if the spin quantum number is increased.

We report the synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the S=1 2-leg spin-ladder compound Na_2Ni_2(C_2O_4)_3(H_2O)_2. The magnetic properties were examined by magnetic susceptibility and pulsed high field magnetization measurements. The magnetic excitations have been measured in high field high frequency ESR. Although the Ni(II) ions form structurally a 2-leg ladder, an isolated dimer model consistently describes the observations very well. The analysis of the temperature dependent magnetization data leads to a magnetic exchange constant of J=43 K along the rungs of the ladder and an average value of the g-factor of 2.25. From the ESR measurements, we determined the single ion anisotropy to D=11.5 K. The validity of the isolated dimer model is supported by Quantum Monte Carlo calculations, performed for several ratios of interdimer and intradimer magnetic exchange and taking into account the experimentally determined single ion anisotropy. The results can be understood in terms of the different coordination and superexchange angles of the oxalate ligands along the rungs and legs of the 2-leg spin ladder.
