In this work we study the antinucleon-nucleus optical potential in the framework of the non-linear derivative (NLD) model with momentum dependent mean-fields. We apply the NLD model to interaction of antinucleons ($\bar{\text{N}}$) in nuclear matter and, in particular, to antiproton scattering on nuclei. In nuclear matter a strong suppression of the $\bar{\text{N}}$-optical potential at rest and at high kinetic energies is found and caused by the momentum dependence of relativistic mean-fields. The NLD results are consistent with known empirical $\bar{\text{N}}$-nucleus observations and agree well with antiproton-nucleus scattering data. This makes the NLD approach compatible with both, nucleon and antinucleon Dirac phenomenologies. Furthermore, in nuclear matter an effective mass splitting between nucleons and antinucleons is predicted.

Nuclear matter and compact neutron stars are studied in the framework of the non-linear derivative (NLD) model which accounts for the momentum dependence of relativistic mean-fields. The generalized form of the energy-momentum tensor is derived which allows to consider different forms of the regulator functions in the NLD Lagrangian. The thermodynamic consistency of the NLD model is demonstrated for arbitrary choice of the regulator functions. The NLD approach describes the bulk properties of the nuclear matter and compares well with microscopic calculations and Dirac phenomenology. We further study the high density domain of the nuclear equation of state (EoS) relevant for the matter in $β$-equilibrium inside neutron stars. It is shown that the low density constraints imposed on the nuclear EoS and by the momentum dependence of the Schrödinger-equivalent optical potential lead to a maximum mass of the neutron stars around $M \simeq 2 M_{\odot}$ which accommodates the observed mass of the J1614-2230 millisecond radio pulsar.

Regge-pole based descriptions of pion-electroproduction on nucleons have given a very good description of the longitudinal components of the cross sections. However, these very same models grossly underestimate the transverse components. A related problem appears in QCD-based scaling arguments that predict the predominance of longitudinal over transverse electroproduction of pions by terms $\propto Q^2$. However, data from JLAB, Cornell and DESY, covering a wide kinematical range $1 < Q^2 < 11\, {\rm GeV}^2$ and $2\, {\rm GeV} < W < 4\, {\rm GeV}$, do not show this expected behavior. We address here this issue of the transverse response in pion-electroproduction by considering the contributions of high-lying ($W > 2$ GeV) nucleon resonances to pion production. The coupling strengths and form factors are obtained through resonance-parton duality. We show that in a wide range of electron energies and four-momentum transfers such a model describes all the available data very well.

In this review we first outline the basics of transport theory and its recent generalization to off-shell transport. We then present in some detail the main ingredients of any transport method using in particular the Giessen Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (GiBUU) implementation of this theory as an example. We discuss the potentials used, the ground state initialization and the collision term, including the in-medium modifications of the latter. The central part of this review covers applications of GiBUU to a wide class of reactions, starting from pion-induced reactions over proton and antiproton reactions on nuclei to heavy-ion collisions (up to about 30 AGeV). A major part concerns also the description of photon-, electron- and neutrino-induced reactions (in the energy range from a few 100 MeV to a few 100 GeV). For this wide class of reactions GiBUU gives an excellent description with the same physics input and the same code being used. We argue that GiBUU is an indispensable tool for any investigation of nuclear reactions in which final-state interactions play a role. Studies of pion-nucleus interactions, nuclear fragmentation, heavy ion reactions, hyper nucleus formation, hadronization, color transparency, electron-nucleus collisions and neutrino-nucleus interactions are all possible applications of GiBUU and are discussed in this article.

The key question in the interaction of antinucleons in the nuclear medium concerns the deepness of the antinucleon-nucleus optical potential. In this work we study this task in the framework of the non-linear derivative (NLD) model which describes consistently bulk properties of nuclear matter and Dirac phenomenology of nucleon-nucleus interactions. We apply the NLD model to antinucleon interactions in nuclear matter and find a strong decrease of the vector and scalar self-energies in energy and density and thus a strong suppression of the optical potential at zero momentum and, in particular, at FAIR energies. This is in agreement with available empirical information and, therefore, resolves the issue concerning the incompatibility of G-parity arguments in relativistic mean-field (RMF) models. We conclude the relevance of our results for the future activities at FAIR.

In this work we present transport model predictions for the attenuation of rho0s in nuclei and for color transparency (CT) effects as observable at CLAS with a 5 GeV electron beam energy. A full event simulation presented here permits to study the impact of actual experimental acceptance conditions and kinematical cuts. The exclusive (e,e'rho0) cross section off nucleons is described by diffractive and color string breaking mechanisms extended toward the onset of the deep inelastic regime. Different hadronization and CT scenarios are compared. This background accounts for the data at $π^0 γ$ invariant masses beyond 700 MeV, but strength is missing at lower invariant masses which was attributed to photon misidentification events, which we simulate to get a good reproduction of the experimental background. Once this is done, we perform an event mixing simulation to reproduce the calculated background and we find that the method provides a good description of the background at low $π^0 γ$ invariant masses but fakes the background at high invariant masses, making background events at low invariant masses, which are due to $γ$ misidentification events, responsible for the background at high invariant masses which is due to the $γp \to π^0 π^0 p$ and $γp \to π^0 ηp$ reactions.

In the present description the primary $γ^*p \to π^+ n$ interaction is described very well both for the longitudinal and the transverse polarizations. For the final state interactions a coupled--channel treatment of the interactions of transmitted hadrons allows to go beyond the Glauber approximation. We show that a proper distinction between the soft hadronic and hard partonic components of the electroproduction amplitude is essential for a quantitative description of the measured nuclear transparency. The data are well reproduced if one assumes that point--like configurations are produced in the regime of hard deep--inelastic scattering (DIS) off partons and dominate the transverse channel.

It is shown that DIS dominates and explains the transverse response at moderate and high photon virtualities $Q^2$ whereas the longitudinal response is dominated by hadronic degrees of freedom and the pion electromagnetic form factor. This leads to a combined description of the longitudinal and transverse components of the cross section in a wide range of photon virtuality $Q^2$ and momentum transfer to the target $t$ and solves the longstanding problem of the observed large transverse cross sections. The study of the interaction of hadrons, produced by elementary probes in a nucleus, with the surrounding nuclear medium can give insight into two important questions. First, at high energies, the production process, the time-scales connected with it and the prehadronic interactions can be studied by using the nuclear radius as a length-scale. We do this here by analyzing data from the EMC and HERMES experiements on nuclear attenuation. Second, at low energies the spectral function, and thus the selfenergy of the produced hadron, can be studied. Specifically, we analyze the CBELSA/TAPS data on $ω$ production in nuclei and discuss the importance of understanding in-medium effects both on the primary production cross section and the final state branching ratio. In both of these studies an excellent control of the final state interactions is essential.

We reanalyze data from ELSA on $ω$ production in nuclei, from where claims of a large shift of the mass were made earlier, which are tied to a certain election of the background in nuclei, very different in shape to the one on the proton. The reanalysis shows that the data demand a very large width of the $ω$ in the medium, with no need for a shift of the mass, for which the experiment is quite insensitive. We study possible $ω$ bound states in the nucleus and find that, even assuming a small width, they could not be observed with the present ELSA resolution. Finally we show that, due to the interplay of background and $ω$ signal, a two bump structure appears with the ELSA set up for the $(γ,p)$ reaction that should not be misidentified with a signal of a possible $ω$ bound state in the nucleus.

Abstract:
In this talk I present recent developments in the field of hadronic physics and hadrons in the nuclear medium. I review the unitary chiral approach to meson baryon interaction and address the topics of the two dynamically generated $Λ(1405)$ resonances, with experiments testing it, the $Λ(1520)$ and $Δ(1700)$ resonances, plus the $Λ(1520)$, $Σ(1385)$ and $ω$ in the nuclear medium.

The ABC effect - a puzzling low-mass enhancement in the $ππ$ invariant mass spectrum - is known from inclusive measurements of two-pion production in nuclear collisions, where it always showed up, if the participating nucleons fused to a bound nuclear system in the final state. The first exclusive measurements on the ABC effect have been carried out very recently at CELSIUS-WASA for the fusion reactions leading to d, $^3$He and $^4$He nuclei in the final state. The data analyzed so far for the fusion processes to d and $^3$He reveal this effect to be a $σ$ channel phenomenon associated with the formation of a strongly attractive $ΔΔ$ system. The data for the strictly isospin-selective double-pionic fusion to $^4$He, where we expect the largest effect, are currently still analyzed. All inclusive data on this system are well described by our model, too. This case also constitutes the heaviest nuclear system, where exclusive measurements of double-pionic fusion can be carried out with present-day instruments. Surprisingly, the $pp \to ppπ^0π^0$ reaction in the $ΔΔ$ region is observed to also show a ABC-like low-$ππ$ mass enhancement, a phenomenon, which deserves special attention.

All the time since its discovery the N$^*$(1440) baryon state, commonly known as Roper resonance, has been a state with many question marks - despite of its 4-star ranking in the particle data book. One reason is that it does not produce any explicit resonance-like structures in the observables of $π$N or $γ$N reactions. Only in partial wave analyses of $π$N scattering data a clear resonance strcuture gets obvious in the $P_{11}$ partial wave. Very recent measurements of the J/$Ψ$ decay by the BES collaboration and of the $pp \to npπ^+$ reaction at 1.3 GeV by the CELSIUS-WASA collaboration show for the first time a clear resonance structure in the invariant $nπ^+$ mass spectrum for the Roper resonance at M $\approx$ 1360 MeV with a width of about 150 MeV. These values agree very favorably with the pole position results of recent $π$N phase shift analyses. In consequence of this very low-lying pole postion, which is roughly 100 MeV below the nominal value, the decay properties have to be reinvestigated. From our two-pion production data we see that the decay mainly proceeds via N$^* \to $N$σ$, i.e. a monopole transition as expected for the breathing mode of the nucleon.

For some cases of possible ωoptical potentials we find clear peaks which could be observable provided a good resolution in the ωenergy is available. We also study the inclusive production of π^0 γin nuclei around the ωenergy and find a double hump structure for the energy spectra, with a peak around a π^0 γenergy of m_ω-100 MeV, which could easily be misidentified by a signal of a bound ωstate in nuclei, while it is due to a different scaling of the uncorrelated π^0 γproduction and ωproduction with subsequent π^0 γdecay.

With the aim of extracting information on the shift of the $ω$ mass in the nuclear medium we analyze data obtained at ELSA from where claims for evidence of a mass shift of the $ω$ have been made. We develop a Monte Carlo simulation code which takes into account the possible reactions in the experimental set up of $(γ~ A \to π^0 γ~X)$ in the vicinity of the $ω$ production region with subsequent $ω\to π^0 γ$ decay. We compare our results with experiment for the distribution of $π^0 γ$ invariant masses and conclude that the distribution is compatible with an enlarged $ω$ width of about 90 MeV at nuclear matter density and no shift in the mass. This change in the width would be compatible with the preliminary results obtained from the transparency ratio in the A dependence of $ω$ production. The discrepancy of the present conclusions with former claims of an evidence for a shift of the $ω$ mass stem from a different choice of background which is discussed in the paper.

The $πΣ^*(1385)$ decay channel of the $Λ(1520)$ is forbidden in free space for the nominal mass of the $Σ^*(1385)$, but the coupling of the $π$ to $ph$ components in the nuclear medium opens new decay channels of the $Λ(1520)$ in the nucleus and produces a much larger width. Together with medium modifications of the $\bar{K}N$ and $πΣ$ decay channels, the final width of the $Λ(1520)$ at nuclear matter density is more than five times bigger than the free one. We perform the calculations by dressing simultaneously the $Λ(1520)$ and the $Σ^*(1385)$ resonances, finding moderate changes in the mass but substantial ones in the width of both resonances.

For this purpose we use a standard approach for the renormalization of pions in nuclei. The corrections obtained for the $NN$ interaction in the medium in this channel are of the order of 20% of the free one in average, and the consideration of short range correlations plays an important role in providing these moderate changes. Yet, the corrections are sizable enough to suggest further studies of the stability and properties of nuclear matter.

The effect of correlated scalar-isoscalar two-pion exchange (CrTPE) modes is considered in connection with central and spin-orbit parts of the NN force. The two-pion correlation function is coupled directly to the scalar form factor of the nucleon which we calculate in the large-N(C) limit where the nucleon can be described as a soliton of an effective chiral theory. The results for the central NN force show a strong repulsive core at short internucleon distances supplemented by a moderate attraction beyond 1 fm. The long-range tail of the central NN potential is driven by the the pion-nucleon sigma term and consistent with the effective $σ$ meson exchange. The spin-orbit part of the NN potential is repulsive. The large-N(C) scaling behavior of the scalar-isoscalar NN interaction is addressed. We show that the spin-orbit part is O(1/N^2(C)) in strength relative to the central force resulting in the ratio $\simeq 1/9$ suggested by the 1/N(C) expansion for N(C)=3. The latter is in agreement with our numerical analysis and with the Kaplan-Manohar large-N(C) power counting. Unitarization of the $ππ$ scattering amplitude plays here an important role and improves the tree level results. Analytical representations of the CrTPE NN potential in terms of elementary functions are derived and their chiral content is discussed.

A multi-component formalism is developed to describe three-body systems with nonstatic pairwise interactions and non-nucleonic degrees of freedom. The dressed-bag model for $NN$ interaction based on the formation of an intermediate six-quark bag dressed by a $σ$-field is applied to the $3N$ system, where it results in a new three-body force between the six-quark bag and a third nucleon. Concise variational calculations of $3N$ bound states are carried out in the dressed-bag model including the new three-body force. It is shown that this three-body force gives at least half the $3N$ total binding energy, while the weight of non-nucleonic components in the $^3$H and $^3$He wavefunctions can exceed 10%. The new force model provides a very good description of $3N$ bound states with a reasonable magnitude of the $σNN$ coupling constant. The model can serve as a natural bridge between dynamical description of few-nucleon systems and the very successful Walecka approach to heavy nuclei and nuclear matter.

The SU(6) breaking induced by gluonic currents predicts furthermore that the ratio of neutron to proton magnetic form factors ${μ_p}G_M^n/{μ_n}G_M^p$ falls with increasing Q^2. We find that the experimental data are consistent with our expectations of an almost linear decrease of the ratio ${μ_p}G_M^n/{μ_n}G_M^p$ with increasing Q^2, supporting the statement that the spatial distributions of magnetization are different for protons and for neutrons.

The radiative capture process $n p \to d γ$ is considered within the framework of a recently developed six-quark dressed-bag model for the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The calculations presented here include both the nucleon current and the meson-exchange current contributions. The latter uses short-range hadronic form factors for the pion exchange currents consistent with the soft cut-off parameter $Λ_{πNN}$ from the $NN$-potential. Contributions of the pion exchange current and $Δ$-isobar current to the total cross section still cannot explain the discrepancy between the theoretical and experimental cross sections. Possibilities for new types of meson exchange currents associated with chiral fields inside multi-quark dressed-bag states in nuclei are discussed.
