An important concept in organisational behaviour is how hierarchy affects the voice of individuals, whereby members of a given organisation exhibit differing power relations based on their hierarchical position. Although there have been prior studies of the relationship between hierarchy and voice, they tend to focus on more qualitative small-scale methods and do not account for structural aspects of the organisation. This paper develops large-scale computational techniques utilising temporal network analysis to measure the effect that organisational hierarchy has on communication patterns within an organisation, focusing on the structure of pairwise interactions between individuals. We focus on one major organisation as a case study - the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) - a major technical standards development organisation for the Internet. A particularly useful feature of the IETF is a transparent hierarchy, where participants take on explicit roles (e.g. Area Directors, Working Group Chairs). Its processes are also open, so we have visibility into the communication of people at different hierarchy levels over a long time period. We utilise a temporal network dataset of 989,911 email interactions among 23,741 participants to study how hierarchy impacts communication patterns. We show that the middle levels of the IETF are growing in terms of their dominance in communications. Higher levels consistently experience a higher proportion of incoming communication than lower levels, with higher levels initiating more communications too. We find that communication tends to flow "up" the hierarchy more than "down". Finally, we find that communication with higher-levels is associated with future communication more than for lower-levels, which we interpret as "facilitation". We conclude by discussing the implications this has on patterns within the wider IETF and for other organisations.

Impact of Co2C Nanoparticles on Enhancing the Critical Current Density of Bi-2223 Superconductor

We have investigated the superconducting properties of nanocomposite pellets made from Bi-2223 and Co2C powders. There is loss of superconducting fraction in the nanocomposites, but the retained superconducting fraction exhibits robust bulk superconducting properties, having Tc ~ 109 K which was found to be comparable to that of the pure Bi-2223 pellet. We found that the composites net magnetization response is a superposition of ferromagnetic and superconducting fractions contributions. We also found the surviving superconducting fraction exhibits a robust Meissner response. In the nanocomposite the irreversibility field of the superconducting fraction at 77 K is found to increase by almost three times compared to the pristine material, thereby showing strong vortex pinning features. We also find a broadened magnetic field regime over which we observe a single vortex pinning regime sustained in the nanocomposite. The critical current density, Jc, of the nanocomposite was found to be approximately five times higher than that of the pristine Bi-2223 pellet at low T. In fact, the enhancement in Jc is most significant in the high T regime, where at temperatures close to Tc in the nanocomposite we see almost two orders of magnitude increase of Jc compared to the pristine Bi-2223 pellet. The larger sized agglomeration of magnetic nanoparticles of Co2C leads to loss of superconductivity in the nanocomposite. However, there are also unagglomerated Co2C nanoparticles distributed uniformly throughout the nanocomposite which acts as efficient pinning centres allowing for collective vortex pinning centres to be retained, even upto temperatures near Tc, and these nanoparticles also do not compromise the bulk Tc of the superconducting fraction. Our study shows that these nanocomposites exhibit enhanced Jc especially in the high T regime are potentially useful for high current applications.

In light of unprecedented increases in the popularity of the internet and social media, comment moderation has never been a more relevant task. Semi-automated comment moderation systems greatly aid human moderators by either automatically classifying the examples or allowing the moderators to prioritize which comments to consider first. However, the concept of inappropriate content is often subjective, and such content can be conveyed in many subtle and indirect ways. In this work, we propose CoRAL -- a language and culturally aware Croatian Abusive dataset covering phenomena of implicitness and reliance on local and global context. We show experimentally that current models degrade when comments are not explicit and further degrade when language skill and context knowledge are required to interpret the comment.

Time series measurements in 2H-NbS$_2$ crystal had unravelled a drive induced transition wherein the critical current (Ic) changes from a low to a high Ic jammed vortex state, via a negative differential resistance (NDR) transition. Here, using multiple current (I) - voltage (V) measurement cycles, we explore the statistical nature of observing the NDR transition in the free-flux-flow (FF) regime in a single crystal of 2H-NbS$_2$. The probability of observing the NDR transition always remains finite for a vortex state created with either fast or slow rate of magnetic field. The probability of observing the NDR transition in the FF regime is found to systematically increase with magnetic field (B) in weak collective pinning regime. In the strong pinning regime, the said probability becomes B-independent. We show that the higher Ic state is unique and cannot be accessed via any conventional route. While the I-V curves do not distinguish between zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) modes of preparing the vortex state, the probability for observing an NDR transition has different B-dependences for the vortex matter prepared in the ZFC and FC modes. We find that the NDR occurs in a high dissipation regime, where the flow resistivity is well above the theoretical value expected in the FF regime. We understand our results on the basis of a rapid drop in vortex viscosity at high drives in 2H-NbS$_2$, which triggers a rapid increase in the vortex velocity and reorganization in the moving vortex matter leading to a dynamical unstable vortex flow. This dynamical instability leads to the NDR transition into a high entropy vortex state with high Ic.

Moderation of reader comments is a significant problem for online news platforms. Here, we experiment with models for automatic moderation, using a dataset of comments from a popular Croatian newspaper. Our analysis shows that while comments that violate the moderation rules mostly share common linguistic and thematic features, their content varies across the different sections of the newspaper. We therefore make our models topic-aware, incorporating semantic features from a topic model into the classification decision. Our results show that topic information improves the performance of the model, increases its confidence in correct outputs, and helps us understand the model's outputs.

Personality and demographics are important variables in social sciences, while in NLP they can aid in interpretability and removal of societal biases. However, datasets with both personality and demographic labels are scarce. To address this, we present PANDORA, the first large-scale dataset of Reddit comments labeled with three personality models (including the well-established Big 5 model) and demographics (age, gender, and location) for more than 10k users. We showcase the usefulness of this dataset on three experiments, where we leverage the more readily available data from other personality models to predict the Big 5 traits, analyze gender classification biases arising from psycho-demographic variables, and carry out a confirmatory and exploratory analysis based on psychological theories. Finally, we present benchmark prediction models for all personality and demographic variables.

This paper presents a probabilistic approach for DNA sequence analysis. A DNA sequence consists of an arrangement of the four nucleotides A, C, T and G and different representation schemes are presented according to a probability measure associated with them. There are different ways that probability can be associated with the DNA sequence: one way is when the probability of an occurrence of a letter does not depend on the previous one (termed as unsuccessive probability) and in another scheme the probability of occurrence of a letter depends on its previous letter (termed as successive probability). Further, based on these probability measures graphical representations of the schemes are also presented. Using the diagram probability measure one can easily calculate an associated probability measure which can serve as a parameter to check how close is a new sequence to already existing ones.
