Spinel Li$_x$Mn$_2$O$_4$ is a key cathode material that is used extensively in commercial Li-ion batteries. A challenge with this material has been that the capacity of the battery fades with cycling, an effect that can be traced to the presence of an anti-ferromagnetic insulator phase in the fully lithiated LiMn$_2$O$_4$ (LMO) and the associated charge disproportionation that drives distortions of the MnO$_6$ octahedra. Here, by combining x-ray magnetic Compton scattering experiments with parallel first-principles computations, we show that the anti-ferromagnetic phase of LMO is surrounded by a robust ferrimagnetic metallic phase, which becomes stable when even a small amount of Li is removed from or added to the charge-ordered LMO. In this surprising ferrimagnetic state, charge-ordering and octahedral distortions are found to be strongly suppressed. We identify the nature of the ferrimagnetic orbitals involved through theoretical and experimental analyses of the magnetic Compton scattering spectra.

The spin-filter material CrVTiAl is a promising candidate for producing highly spin-polarized currents at room temperature in a nonmagnetic architecture. Thin films of compensated-ferrimagnetic CrVTiAl have been grown and their electrical and magnetic properties have been studied. The resistivity shows two-channel semiconducting behavior with one disordered gapless channel and a gapped channel with activation energy $ΔE$=~0.1~-~0.2~eV. Magnetoresistance measurements to B~=~35~T provide values for the mobilities of the gapless channel, leading to an order of magnitude difference in the carrier effective masses, which are in reasonable accord with our density-functional-theory based results. The density of states and electronic band structure is computed for permutations of the four sublattices arranged differently along the (111) body diagonal, yielding metallic (Cr-V-Al-Ti), spin-gapless (Cr-V-Ti-Al) and spin-filtering (Cr-Ti-V-Al) phases. Robustness of the spin-gapless phase to substitutional disorder is also considered.

The effects of chemical disorder on the transport properties of the spin-filter material CrVTiAl are investigated experimentally and theoretically. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction experiments on bulk CrVTiAl and the associated Rietveld analysis indicate that the crystal structure consists primarily of a mixture of a partially ordered B2 phase, a fully disordered A2 phase and a small component of an ordered L2\textsubscript{1} or Y phase. High temperature resistivity measurements confirm the existence of a band gap. First-principles, all-electron, self-consistent electronic structure computations show that the chemically disordered A2 and B2 phases are metallic, while the spin-filter properties of the ideal Y-type phase are preserved in the presence of L2\textsubscript{1} disorder. The Hall coefficient is found to decrease with increasing temperature, similar to the measured increase in the conductivity, indicating the presence of thermally activated semiconductor-like carriers.

We discuss how x-ray Compton scattering spectra can be used for investigating the evolution of electronic states in cathode materials of Li batteries under the lithiation/delithiation process. In particular, our analysis of the Compton spectra taken from polycrystalline LixCoO2 samples shows that the spectra are dominated by the contribution of the O-2p redox orbital. We identify a distinct signature of d-orbital delocalization, which is tied directly to the conductivity of the material, providing a descriptor based on Compton spectra for monitoring the lithiation range with improved conductivity and kinetics for electrochemical operation. Our study demonstrates that Compton scattering spectroscopy can provide a window for probing complex electronic mechanisms underlying the charging and discharging processes in Li-battery materials.

Although various techniques have been developed to map the lithium distribution in electrodes, these methods are mostly applicable to test cells. Here we propose the use of high-energy x-ray Compton scattering spectroscopy to measure the local lithium concentration in closed electrochemical cells. A combination of experimental measurements and parallel first-principles computations is used to show that the shape parameter S of the Compton profile is linearly proportional to lithium concentration and thus provides a viable descriptor for this important quantity. The merits and applicability of our method are demonstrated with illustrative examples of LixMn2O4 cathodes and a working commercial lithium coin battery CR2032.

We present results of electronic band structure, Fermi surface and electron transport properties calculations in orthorhombic $n$- and $p$-type SnSe, applying Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method and Boltzmann transport approach. The analysis accounted for temperature effect on crystallographic parameters in $Pnma$ structure as well as the phase transition to $CmCm$ structure at $T_c\sim 807 $K. Remarkable modifications of conduction and valence bands were notified upon varying crystallographic parameters within the structure before $T_c$, while the phase transition mostly leads to jump in the band gap value. The diagonal components of kinetic parameter tensors (velocity, effective mass) and resulting transport quantity tensors (electrical conductivity $σ$, thermopower $S$ and power factor PF) were computed in wide range of temperature ($15-900 $K) and, hole ($p-$type) and electron ($n-$type) concentration ($10^{17}-10^{21}$ cm$^{-3}$). SnSe is shown to have strong anisotropy of the electron transport properties for both types of charge conductivity, as expected for the layered structure. In general, $p$-type effective masses are larger than $n$-type ones. Interestingly, $p$-type SnSe has strongly non-parabolic dispersion relations, with the 'pudding-mold'-like shape of the highest valence band. The analysis of $σ$, $S$ and PF tensors indicates, that the inter-layer electron transport is beneficial for thermoelectric performance in $n$-type SnSe, while this direction is blocked in $p$-type SnSe, where in-plane transport is preferred. Our results predict, that $n$-type SnSe is potentially even better thermoelectric material than $p$-type one. Theoretical results are compared with single crystal $p$-SnSe measurements, and good agreement is found.

We present a theoretical study of the influence of the relativistic effects on electronic band structure and thermopower of Mg2X(X= Si, Ge, Sn) semiconductors. The full potential Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) method is used, and the detailed comparison between the fully relativistic and semi-relativistic electronic structure features is done. We show that the spin-orbit (S-O) interaction splits the valence band structure at Gamma point in good agreement with the experimental data, and this effect strongly depends on X atom. The S-O modifications of the topology of the Gamma-centered hole-like Fermi surface pockets lead to a change in electron transport properties, which are investigated using the Boltzmann approach. In addition, the simple and efficient method is presented for the calculation of density of states effective mass m*, and then used to examine the impact of relativistic effects on m*. It is found that S-O coupling of the valence bands reduces effective mass and therefore significantly lowers the thermopower, primarily in Mg2Sn, but also in Mg2Ge. A detrimental influence of the S-O interaction on thermoelectric performance of p-type Mg2X is analyzed in function of temperature (10-900 K) and carrier concentration (10^18-10^22 cm-3). Interestingly, similar calculations in n-type Mg2X, show negligible effect of the S-O interaction on lowest conduction bands and consequently also on the Seebeck coefficient.

Positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS) and positron-electron momentum density (PEMD) studies on multilayers of PbSe nanocrystals (NCs), supported by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), show that positrons are strongly trapped at NC surfaces, where they provide insight into the surface composition and electronic structure of PbSe NCs. Our analysis indicates abundant annihilation of positrons with Se electrons at the NC surfaces and with O electrons of the oleic ligands bound to Pb ad-atoms at the NC surfaces, which demonstrates that positrons can be used as a sensitive probe to investigate the surface physics and chemistry of nanocrystals inside multilayers. Ab-initio electronic structure calculations provide detailed insight in the valence and semi-core electron contributions to the positron-electron momentum density of PbSe. Both lifetime and PEMD are found to correlate with changes in the particle morphology characteristic of partial ligand removal.

A two-dimensional (2D) momentum density reconstruction from measured Compton profiles yields a clear FS signature in the third Brillouin zone along [100]. The quantitative agreement between density functional theory (DFT) calculations and momentum density experiment suggests that Fermi-liquid physics is restored in the overdoped regime. In particular the predicted FS topology is found to be in good accord with the corresponding experimental data. We find similar quantitative agreement between the measured 2D angular correlation of positron annihilation radiation (2D-ACAR) spectra and the DFT based computations. However, 2D-ACAR does not give such a clear signature of the FS in the extended momentum space in either the theory or the experiment.

Results of the first principles study on the electronic structure and magnetism of the superconducting weak ferromagnet Y$_4$Co$_3$, are presented. Using the full potential Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker (FP-KKR) method, densities of states, dispersion curves and magnetic moments were calculated for quasi-ordered structural model of the compound in the framework of the local density approximation. Spin-polarized KKR calculations confirm that weak ferromagnetic properties of Y$_4$Co$_3$ can be attributed to only one cobalt atom located on (2b) site in the unit cell, while other twenty Co and Y atoms acts as a diamagnetic environment. Moreover, the magnetic Co atoms form a quasi-one-dimensional chains along $z$ direction. The magnitude of Co(2b) magnetic moment ($0.55~μ_B$) markedly overestimates the experimental value (0.23~$μ_B$), which suggests the importance of spin fluctuations in this system. Calculated distribution of spin magnetization in the unit cell provides a background for discussion of the coexistence of ferromagnetism and superconductivity in Y$_4$Co$_3$. Finally, the effect of pressure on magnetism is discussed and compared with experimental data, also supporting weak ferromagnetic behaviors in the system.

To enlighten the magnetic properties above Curie temperature, the paramagnetic state behaviours are simulated using the disordered local moments (DLM) concept. The KKR-CPA computations show, that in Fe2P, the Fe magnetic moment of the (3f) site disappears in the DLM state, while the moment of the (3g) site is only little lowered, comparison made with the low temperature ferromagnetic state.

In order to probe the magnetic ground state, we have carried out temperature dependent magnetic Compton scattering experiments on an oriented single crystal of magnetite (Fe$_3$O$_4$), together with the corresponding first-principles band theory computations to gain insight into the measurements. An accurate value of the magnetic moment $μ_S$ associated with unpaired spins is obtained directly over the temperature range of 10-300K. $μ_S$ is found to be non-integral and to display an anomalous behavior with the direction of the external magnetic field near the Verwey transition. These results reveal how the magnetic properties enter the Verwey energy scale via spin-orbit coupling and the geometrical frustration of the spinel structure, even though the Curie temperature of magnetite is in excess of 800 K. The anisotropy of the magnetic Compton profiles increases through the Verwey temperature $T_v$ and indicates that magnetic electrons in the ground state of magnetite become delocalized on Fe B-sites above $T_v$.

A possibility for a new family of intermetallic perovskite superconductors Sc3XB, with X = Tl, In, Ga and Al, is presented as a result of KKR electronic structure and pseudopotential phonon calculations. The large values of computed McMillan--Hopfield parameters on scandium suggest appearance of superconductivity in Sc3XB compounds. On the other hand, the possibility of weak itinerant ferromagnetic behavior of Sc3X systems is indicated by the small magnetic moment on Sc atoms in two cases of X =~ l and In. Also the electronic structure and resulting superconducting parameters for more realistic case of boron--deficient systems Sc3XB_x are computed using KKR--CPA method, by replacing boron atom with a vacancy. The comparison of the calculated McMillan--Hopfield parameters of the Sc3XB series with corresponding values in MgCNi3 and YRh3B superconductors is given, finding the favorable trends for superconductivity.

We present results of electronic structure calculations for intermetallic perovskite Sc3InB with Full--Potential KKR-LDA method. Sc3InB is very promising candidate for a new superconductor (related to 8K MgCNi3) and can be regarded as a boron-inserted cubic Sc3In, which is a high--pressure allotropic form of the hexagonal weak ferromagnet Sc3In. We predict that cubic Sc3In can be also magnetic, whereas Sc3InB having large DOS in the vicinity of EF exhibits non-magnetic ground state. Estimation of the electron--phonon coupling for Sc3InB gives $λ\simeq 1$. Furthermore, the effect of vacancy in Sc3InB{1-x} and antisite disorder in Sc3(In-B) on critical parameters is also discussed in view of KKR--CPA method. All theoretical results support possibility of the superconductivity onset in Sc3InB. Preliminary experimental measurements established the transition temperature close to 4.5 K, with a very abrupt change in susceptibility and a correlated drop of the resistivity when cooling down.

We illustrate our procedure in detail by analyzing the measured MCP at 5K and the MCP computed within the framework of the local spin density approximation (LSDA) and comment on the differences between the measured and computed $e_g$ occupancies as a reflection of the limitations of the LSDA in treating electron correlation effects.

We have carried out first principles, all-electron computations of the magnetic momentum density $ρ_{mag}({\mathbf p})$ and magnetic Compton profiles (MCPs) for momentum transfer along the [100], [001], and [110] directions in LaSr$_2$Mn$_2$O$_7$ and La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) based band theory framework. Parallel measurements of these three MCPs from a single crystal of La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ at 5 K in a magnetic field of 7 T are also reported. $ρ_{mag}({\mathbf p})$ is shown to contain distinct peaks arising from the occupied majority-spin $t_{2g}$ electrons and to display images of the Fermi surface (FS) in the first and higher Brillouin zones (BZs). The overall shape of the MCPs, $J_{mag}(p_z)$, obtained by integrating $ρ_{mag}({\mathbf p})$ over $p_x$ and $p_y$, is found to be dominated by the majority-spin $t_{2g}$ states. The FS-related fine structure in the MCPs is however substantial only in the [100] MCP, which contains features arising from the large majority-spin hole sheets. The overall shapes and widths of the experimental MCPs along all three directions investigated are in reasonably good accord with theoretical predictions, although some discrepancies indicating inadequacy of the LSDA in treating the magnetic states can be identified. We discuss details of the FS-related signatures in the first and higher BZs in the [100] MCP and show that high resolution magnetic Compton scattering experiments with a momentum resolution of 0.1 a.u. FWHM (full-width-at-half-maximum) or better will be necessary to observe this fine structure. We comment also on the feasibility of using positron annihilation spectroscopy in this connection.

Electronic structure calculations, using the charge and spin self-consistent Korringa- Kohn-Rostoker (KKR) method, have been performed for several $R$Mn$X$ compounds ($R$ = Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba, Y; $X$ = Si, Ge) of the CeFeSi-type structure. The origin of their magnetic properties has been investigated emphasizing the role of the Mn sublattice. The significant influence of the Mn-Mn and Mn-$X$ interatomic distances on the Mn magnetic moment value is delineated from our computations, supporting many neutron diffraction data. We show that the marked change of $μ_{Mn}$ with the Mn-Mn and Mn-$X$ distances resulted from a redistribution between spin-up and spin-down $d$-Mn DOS rather than from different fillings of the Mn 3$d$-shell. Bearing in mind that the neutron diffraction data reported for the $R$Mn$X$ compounds are rather scattered, the KKR computations of $μ_{Mn}$ are in fair agreement with the experimental values. Comparing density of states near $E_{F}$ obtained in different magnetic orderings, one can notice that the entitled $R$Mn$X$ systems seem to 'adapt' their magnetic structures to minimize the DOS in the vicinity of the Fermi level. Noteworthy, the SrMnGe antiferromagnet exhibits a pseudo-gap behaviour at $E_{F}$, suggesting anomalous electron transport properties. In addition, the F-AF transition occurring in the disordered La$_{1-x}$Y$_{x}$MnSi alloy for the $0.8<x<1$ range is well supported by the DOS features of La$_{0.2}$Y$_{0.8}$MnSi. In contrast to the investigated $R$Mn$X$ compounds, YFeSi was found to be non-magnetic, which is in excellent agreement with the experimental data.

We have measured temperature-dependent magnetic Compton profiles (MCPs) from a single crystal of La$_{1.2}$Sr$_{1.8}$Mn$_2$O$_7$. The MCPs, which involved the scattering of circularly polarized x-rays, are in general related to the momentum density of all the unpaired spins in the system. Nevertheless, we show that when the x-ray scattering vector lies along the [110] direction, the number of magnetic electrons of a specific symmetry, i.e. $d$-electrons of $x^2-y^2$ symmetry, yield a distinct signature in the MCP, allowing us to monitor substantial changes in the occupancy of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ states over the investigated temperature range of 5-200K. This study indicates that magnetic Compton scattering can provide a powerful window on the properties of specific magnetic electrons in complex materials.

We present one-dimensional KKR method with the aim to elucidate its linear features, particularly important in optimizing the numerical algorithms in energy bands computations. The conventional KKR equations based on the multiple scattering theory as well as novel forms of the secular matrix with nearly linear energy dependency of the eigenvalues are presented. The quasi-linear behaviour of these eigenvalue functions appears after (i) re-normalizing the wave functions in such a way that 'irregular' solutions vanish on the boundary of the 'muffin-tin' segments and (ii) integrating the full Green function over the whole Wigner-Seitz cell. In addition, using the aforementioned approach we derive one-dimensional analog of the generalized Lloyd formula.
The novel KKR approach illustrated in one-dimension can be almost directly applied to the higher dimensional cases. This should open prospects for the accurate KKR band structure computations of very complex materials.

The method was also applied to theoretical CPs computed within the Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent potential approximation (KKR-CPA) first-principles scheme for the same nine orientations of the crystal. The experimental density rho(p) is in satisfactory agreement with the theoretical density and shows most details of the Fermi surface (FS) and exhibits electron correlation effects. We comment on the map of the FS obtained by folding the reconstructed rho(p) into the first Brillouin zone which yields the occupation number density, rho(k). A test of the validity of data via a consistency condition (within our reconstruction algorithm) as well as the propagation of experimental noise in the reconstruction of both rho(p) and rho(k) are investigated.

We present a novel technique for enhancing Fermi surface (FS) signatures in the 2D distribution obtained after the 3D momentum density in a crystal is projected along a specific direction in momentum space. These results are useful for investigating fermiology via high resolution Compton scattering and positron annihilation spectroscopies. We focus on the particular case of the (110) projection in an fcc crystal where the standard approach based on the use of the Lock-Crisp-West (LCW) folding theorem fails to give a clear FS image due to the strong overlap with FS images obtained through projection from higher Brillouin zones. We show how these superposed FS images can be disentangled by using a selected set of reciprocal lattice vectors in the folding process. The applicability of our partial folding scheme is illustrated by considering Compton spectra from an Al-3at%Li disordered alloy single crystal. For this purpose, high resolution Compton profiles along nine directions in the (110) plane were measured. Corresponding highly accurate theoretical profiles in Al-3at%Li were computed within the local density approximation (LDA)-based Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent potential approximation (KKR-CPA) first-principles framework. A good level of overall accord between theory and experiment is obtained, some expected discrepancies reflecting electron correlation effects notwithstanding, and the partial folding scheme is shown to yield a clear FS image in the (110) plane in Al-3%Li.

We report high-resolution Compton profiles (CP's) of Al along the three principal symmetry directions at a photon energy of 59.38 keV, together with corresponding highly accurate theoretical profiles obtained within the local-density approximation (LDA) based band-theory framework. A good accord between theory and experiment is found with respect to the overall shapes of the CP's, their first and second derivatives, as well as the anisotropies in the CP's defined as differences between pairs of various CP's. There are however discrepancies in that, in comparison to the LDA predictions, the measured profiles are lower at low momenta, show a Fermi cutoff which is broader, and display a tail which is higher at momenta above the Fermi momentum. A number of simple model calculations are carried out in order to gain insight into the nature of the underlying 3D momentum density in Al, and the role of the Fermi surface in inducing fine structure in the CP's. The present results when compared with those on Li show clearly that the size of discrepancies between theoretical and experimental CP's is markedly smaller in Al than in Li. This indicates that, with increasing electron density, the conventional picture of the electron gas becomes more representative of the momentum density and that shortcomings of the LDA framework in describing the electron correlation effects become less important.

We present all electron computations of the 3D Fermi surfaces (FS's) in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_{3}$ for a number of different compositions based on the selfconsistent Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker coherent-potential-approximation (KKR-CPA) approach for incorporating the effects of Ba/K substitution. By assuming a simple cubic structure throughout the composition range, the evolution of the nesting and other features of the FS of the underlying pristine phase is correlated with the onset of various structural transitions with K do**. A parameterized scheme for obtaining an accurate 3D map of the FS in Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_{3}$ for an arbitrary do** level is developed. We remark on the puzzling differences between the phase diagrams of Ba$_{1-x}$K$_{x}$BiO$_{3}$ and BaPb$_{x}$Bi$_{1-x}$O$_{3}$ by comparing aspects of their electronic structures and those of the end compounds BaBiO$_{3}$, KBiO$_3$ and BaPbO$_3$. Our theoretically predicted FS's in the cubic phase are relevant for analyzing high-resolution Compton scattering and positron-annihilation experiments sensitive to the electron momentum density, and are thus amenable to substantial experimental verification.
