Thanks to its long and rich observational history and rapid apsidal motion, the massive eclipsing binary Y Cyg represents one of the cornestones to critical tests of stellar evolution theory for massive stars. Yet, the determination of the basic physical properties is less accurate than it could be given the existing number of spectral and photometric observations. Our goal is to analyze all these data simultaneously with the new dedicated series of our own spectral and photometric observations from observatories widely separated in longitude. We obtained new series of UBV observations at three observatories separated in local time to obtain complete light curves of Y Cyg for its orbital period close to 3 days. This new photometry was reduced and carefully transformed to the standard UBV system using the HEC22 program. We also obtained new series of red spectra secured at two observatories and re-analyzed earlier obtained blue electronic spectra. Our analyses provide the most accurate so far published value of the apsidal period of 47.805 +/- 0.030 yrs and the following physical elements: M1=17.72+/-0.35$ Msun, M2=17.73+/-0.30 Msun, R1=5.785+/-0.091 Rsun, and R2=5.816+/-0.063 Rsun. The disentangling thus resulted in the masses, which are somewhat higher than all previous determinations and virtually the same for both stars, while the light curve implies a slighly higher radius and luminosity for star 2. The above empirical values imply the logarithm of the internal structure constant log k2 = -1.937. A comparison with Claret's stellar interior models implies an age close to 2 millions yrs for both stars. The claimed accuracy of modern element determination of 1-2 per cent seems still a bit too optimistic and obtaining new high-dispersion and high-resolution spectra is desirable.

The abundance anomalies in chemically peculiar B-F stars are usually explained by diffusion of chemical elements in the stable atmospheres of these stars. But it is well known that Cp stars with similar temperatures and gravities show very different chemical compositions. We show that the abundance patterns of several stars can be influenced by accretion and (or) nuclear reactions in stellar atmospheres. We report the result of determination of abundances of elements in the atmosphere of hot Am star: Sirius A and show that Sirius A was contaminated by s-process enriched matter from Sirius B (now a white dwarf). The second case is Przybylski's star. The abundance pattern of this star is the second most studied one after the Sun with the abundances determined for about 60 chemical elements. Spectral lines of radioactive elements with short decay times were found in the spectrum of this star. We report the results of investigation on the stratification of chemical elements in the atmosphere of Przybylski's star and the new identification of lines corresponding to short lived actinides in its spectrum. Possible explanations of the abundances pattern of Przybylski's star (as well as HR465 and HD965) can be the natural radioactive decay of thorium, and uranium, the explosion of a companion as a Supernova or nucleosynthesis events at stellar surface.

We report the abundance determination in the atmosphere of the bright halo star HD221170. The spectra were taken with the Terskol Observatory's 2.0-m telescope with a resolution R=45000 and signal-to-noise ratio up to 250 in the wavelength region 3638-10275 Å. The adopted atmospheric parameters correspond to an effective temperature \Tef=4475 K, a surface gravity \lgg=1.0, a microturbulent velocity \vmi=1.7 \kms, and a macroturbulent velocity \vma=4 \kms. The abundances of 43 chemical elements were determined with the method of spectrum synthesis. The large overabundances (by 1 dex relative to iron) of elements with Z$>38$ are shown to follow the same pattern as the solar r-abundances. The present HD221170 analysis confirms the non-universality of the r-process, or more exactly the observation that the astrophysical sites hosting the r-process do not always lead to a unique relative abundance distribution for the bulk Ba to Hg elements, the Pb-peak elements, and the actinides.

We present a spectrum of the symbiotic star V1016 Cyg observed with the 3.6 m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, in order to illustrate a method to measure the covering factor of the neutral scattering region around the giant component with respect to the hot emission region around the white dwarf component. In the spectrum, we find broad wings around H$α$ and a broad emission feature around 6545${\rm Å}$ that is blended with the [N II]$ λ$ 6548 line. These two features are proposed to be formed by Raman scattering by atomic hydrogen, where the incident radiation is proposed to be UV continuum radiation around Ly$β$ in the former case and He II $λ$ 1025 emission line arising from $n=6\to n=2$ transitions for the latter feature. We remove the H$α$ wings by a template Raman scattering wing profile and subtract the [N II] $λ$ 6548 line using the 3 times stronger [N II] $λ$ 6583 feature in order to isolate the He II Raman scattered 6545 Åline. We obtain the flux ratio $F_{6545}/F_{6560}=0.24$ of the He II $λ$ 6560 emission line and the 6545 Åfeature for V1016 Cyg. Under the assumption that the He II emission from this object is isotropic, this ratio is converted to the ratio $Φ_{6545}/Φ_{1025}=0.17$ of the number of the incident photons and that of the scattered photons. This implies that the scattering region with H I column density $N_{HI}\ge 10^{20}{\rm cm^{-2}}$ covers 17 per cent of the emission region. By combining the presumed binary period $\sim 100$ yrs of this system we infer that a significant fraction of the slow stellar wind from the Mira component is ionized and that the scattering region around the Mira extends a few tens of AU, which is closely associated with the mass loss process of the Mira component.

Under the current microlensing planet search strategy of monitoring events caused by stellar-mass lenses, only planets located within a narrow region of separations from central stars can be effectively detected. However, with the dramatic increase of the monitoring frequency, two additional populations of free-floating and wide-orbit planets can be detected. In this paper, we investigate the lensing properties of events caused by wide-orbit planets and find that the light curves of a significant fraction of these events will exhibit signatures of central stars, enabling one to distinguish them from those caused by free-floating planets. Due to the large primary/planet mass ratio, the effect of the central star endures to considerable separations. We find that for a Jupiter-mass planet the signatures of the central star can be detected with fractional deviations of > 5% from the best-fitting single-lens light curves for > 80% of events caused by bound planets with separations < 10 AU and the probability is still substantial for planets with separations up to 20 AU. Therefore, detecting a large sample of these events will provide useful information about the distribution of extrasolar planets around their central stars. Proper estimation of the probability of distinguishing events caused by wide-orbit planets from those caused by free-floating planets will be important for the correct determination of the frequency of free-floating planets, whose microlensing sample will be contaminated by wide-orbits planets.

If a gravitational microlensing event is caused by a widely separated binary lens and the source approaches both lens components, the source flux is successively magnified by the individual lenses: double microlensing events. If events are observed astrometrically, double lensing events are expected to occur with an increased frequency due to the long range astrometric effect of the companion. We find that although the trajectory of the source star image centroid shifts of an astrometric double lensing event has a distorted shape from both of the elliptical ones induced by the individual single lens components, event duplication can be readily identified by the characteristic loop in the trajectory formed during the source's passage close to the companion. We determine and compare the probabilities of detecting double lensing events from both photometric and astrometric lensing observations by deriving analytic expressions for the relations between binary lensing parameters to become double lensing events. From this determination, we find that for a given set of the binary separation and the mass ratio the astrometric probability is roughly an order higher than the photometric probability. Therefore, we predict that a significant fraction of events that will be followed up by using future high precision interferometeric instruments will be identified as double lensing events.

An S-band linear accelerator is the source of particles and the front end of the Advanced Photon Source injector. In addition, it supports a low-energy undulator test line (LEUTL) and drives a free-electron laser (FEL). A waveguide-switching and distribution system is now under construction. The system configuration was revised to be consistent with the recent change to electron-only operation. There are now six modulator-klystron subsystems, two of which are being configured to act as hot spares for two S-band transmitters each, so that no single failure will prevent injector operation. The two subsystems are also used to support additional LEUTL capabilities and off-line testing. Design considerations for the waveguide-switching subsystem, topology selection, control and protection provisions, high-power test results, and current status are described
