Energy equipartition and the energy budget in the jet are import issues for the radiation mechanism of blazars. Early work predominantly concentrated on flat-spectrum radio quasars and a limited number of BL Lacertae objects (BL Lacs). In this paper, we compile 348 high-frequency peaked BL Lac objects (HBLs) based on the catalog of active galactic nuclei (4LAC-DR3) from Fermi-LAT, and employ \textit{JetSet} to fit the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of these HBLs in the framework of the one-zone lepton model. We aim to determine whether the energy budget is reasonable and whether the energy equipartition is satisfied in HBLs. The results of the statistical analysis suggest that: (1) SEDs of HBLs can be reproduced well by using the one-zone lepton model; however it cannot achieve the energy equalization, and the relativistic electron energy density is far greater than the magnetic field energy density, $U_{e} \gtrsim100 U_{B}$; (2) the majority of the HBLs are located in the $t_{cool}$$<$$t_{dyn}$ region (where the horizontal coordinate represents the jet power of electrons, while the ordinate indicates the ratio between the dynamic time scale to the cooling timescale), and the jet kinetic power of HBLs is greater than the jet power of radiation; there is a very low radiation efficiency, we deduce that HBLs may have optically thin advection-dominated accretion flows; (3) the $\logε_{B}$ of HBLs is less than zero, which indicates that the jet kinetic power of HBLs is not affected by Poynting flux; (4) the relationships with $U_{e} >U_{Syn}\sim U_{B}$, $L_{e}\sim L_{p}>L_{B}\sim L_{rad}$ and $\logε_{e}>0.5$ are established. These relations indicate that most of the energy of HBLs is stored in the population of low-energy electrons.

Methods. By examining the variability of the equivalent width (EW), we categorise the Fermi-LAT light curves of OQ 334 during the epoch of MJD 54628-58677 into seven distinct epochs, including the flat spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) state, the transition state, and the BL Lac state. We obtained both a Fermi-LAT SED and a multi-wavelength SED for each of these distinct epochs. Results. The source exhibits a transformation from a quiescent state to a highly active state, as evidenced by the variability of the EW. The multi-wavelength SEDs display a prominent external Compton characteristic, even though the Fermi-LAT SED reveals both a FSRQ and a BL Lac state across the seven different epochs. To gain further insights, we employed a leptonic model that takes into account the soft photon fields originating from both synchrotron radiation and the external environment. By simulating the multi-wavelength SEDs for each epoch, we uncover the following results. Firstly, the energy density of the external photon fields evolves in an oscillatory manner over the seven different epochs. Also, the energy density of the external photon fields in the BL Lac state is lower than that in the FSRQ state.Conclusions. These findings suggest that the CL blazar represents a unique phase in the blazar sequence.

We re-derive the possible dependence of the redshift with very high energy (VHE) $γ$-ray photon index. The results suggest that the universe to VHE $γ$-rays is becoming more transparent than usually expected. We introduce the extragalactic background light (EBL) plus the photon to axion-like particle (ALP) oscillations to explain this phenomenon. We concentrate our analysis on 70 blazars up to redshift $z \simeq 1$. Assuming this correlation is solely the result of photon-photon absorption of VHE photons with the EBL, which finds the deviations between the predictions and observations, especially at redshifts $0.2 < z < 1$. We then discuss the implications of photon-ALP oscillations for the VHE $γ$-ray spectra of blazars. A strong evidence shows that: 1) the EBL attenuation results that the VHE $γ$-ray photon index increases non-linearly at the ranges of redshift, $0.03 < z < 0.2$; 2) the photon-ALP oscillation results in a attractive characteristic in the VHE $γ$-ray photon index at the ranges of redshift, $0.2 < z < 1$. We suggest that both the EBL absorption and photon-ALP oscillation can influence on the propagation of VHE $γ$-rays from distant blazars.

There are still some {significant and} unanswered questions about the {incredible} {very high energy (VHE)} $γ$-ray signatures. To help understand the mechanism, focusing on the linear and quadratic perturbation mode for the subluminal regime, the present paper revisited the expected signature for the Lorentz invariance violation effects on $γ-γ$ absorption in TeV spectra of Gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). We note that there is {a critical energy} for the pair production process, which is sensitive to the assumed quantum gravity energy scale. We suggest that a {reemergence of the energy spectrum of $γ$-rays} at the several tens of TeV is a rough observational diagnostic for the Lorentz invariance violation (LIV) effects. The expected spectra characteristics are applied to a GRB 221009A. The results show that the cosmic opacity with LIV effects considered here {can} roughly reproduce the observed $γ$-ray spectra for the source, which enabled us to constrain the upper limit of the values of energy scale at $E_{\rm QG,~1}\leq3.35\times10^{20}$ GeV for the linear perturbation and $E_{\rm QG,~2}\leq9.19\times10^{12}$ GeV for the quadratic perturbation. {These scenarios would update the bound of the LIV coefficient with $ξ_{\rm 1}^{\prime}\geq 3.62\times10^{-2}$ for the linear perturbation, and $ξ_{\rm 2}^{\prime}\geq 1.33\times10^{6}$ for the quadratic perturbation in the standard model extension (SME) framework, respectively. }

The next generation of TeV detectors is expected to have a significantly enhanced performance. It is therefore constructive to search for new TeV candidates for observation. This paper focuses on TeV candidates among the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lacertae objects (HBLs) reported in the fourth catalog of active galactic nuclei detected by the Fermi's Large Area Telescope, i.e., 4LAC. By cross-matching the Fermi data with radio and optical observations, we collected the multiwavelength features of 180 HBLs with known redshift. The data set contains 39 confirmed TeV sources and 141 objects whose TeV detection has not yet been reported (either not yet observed, or observed but not detected). Using two kinds of supervised machine-learning (SML) methods, we searched for new possible TeV candidates (PTCs) among the nondetected objects by assessing the similarity of their multi-wavelength properties to existing TeV-detected objects. The classification results of the two SML classifiers were combined and the 24 highest-confidence PTCs were proposed as the best candidates. We calculate, here, the 12 year averaged Fermi spectra of these PTCs and estimate their detectability by extrapolating the Fermi spectrum and including the extragalactic background light attenuation. Four candidates are suggested to have a high likelihood of being detected by the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory and 24 are candidates for the Cerenkov Telescope Array observations.

In this paper, we have selected a sample of 64 teraelectronvolt blazars, with redshift, from those classified in the fourth Fermi Large Area Telescope source catalog\footnote{\url{https://fermi.gsfc.nasa.gov/ssc/data/access/lat/8yr_catalog/}}. We have obtained the values of the relevant physical parameters by performing a log-parabolic fitting of the average-state multiwavelength spectral energy distributions. We estimate the range of the radiation zone parameters, such as the Doppler factor (${D}$), the magnetic field strength ($B$), the radiative zone radius ($R$) and the peak Lorentz factor (${γ_{\rm p}}$) of nonthermal electrons. Here, we show that (1) there is a strong linear positive correlation between the intrinsic synchrotron peak frequency and the intrinsic inverse Compton scattering (ICs) peak frequency among different types of blazars; (2) if radio bands are excluded, the spectral index of each band is negatively correlated with the intrinsic peak frequency; (3) there is a strong linear negative correlation between the curvature at the peak and the intrinsic peak frequency of the synchrotron bump, and a weak positive correlation between the curvature at the peak and the intrinsic peak frequency of the ICs bump; (4) there is a strong linear positive correlation between the intrinsic ICs peak luminosity and intrinsic $γ$-ray luminosity and between the intrinsic ICs peak frequency and peak Lorentz factor; (5) there is a strong negative linear correlation between $\rm log{\;B}$ and $\rm log{\;γ_{p}}$; and (6) there is no correlation between $\rm log{\;R}$ and $\rm log{\;γ_{p}}$.

The Advanced Mo-based Rare process Experiment (AMoRE)-Pilot experiment is an initial phase of the AMoRE search for neutrinoless double beta decay of $^{100}$Mo, with the purpose of investigating the level and sources of backgrounds. Searches for neutrinoless double beta decay generally require ultimately low backgrounds. Surface $α$ decays on the crystals themselves or nearby materials can deposit a continuum of energies that can be as high as the $Q$-value of the decay itself and may fall in the region of interest (ROI). To understand these background events, we studied backgrounds from radioactive contaminations internal to and on the surface of the crystals or nearby materials with Geant4-based Monte Carlo simulations. In this study, we report on the measured $α$ energy spectra fitted with the corresponding simulated spectra for six crystal detectors, where sources of background contributions could be identified through high energy $α$ peaks and continuum parts in the energy spectrum for both internal and surface contaminations. We determine the low-energy contributions from internal and surface $α$ contaminations by extrapolating from the $α$ background fitting model.

The jets of blazars are renowned for their multi-wavelength flares and rapid extreme variability; however, there are still some important unanswered questions about the physical processes responsible for these spectral and temporal changes in emission properties. In this paper, we develop a time-dependent particle evolution model for the time-varying emission spectrum of blazars. In the model, we introduce time-dependent electric and magnetic fields, which consistently include the variability of relevant physical quantities in the transport equation. The evolution on the electron distribution is numerically solved from a generalized transport equation that contains the terms describing the electrostatic, first-order and second-order \emph{Fermi} acceleration, escape of particles due to both advection and spatial diffusion, as well as energy losses due to the synchrotron emission and inverse-Compton scattering of both synchrotron and external ambient photon fields. We find that the light curve profiles of blazars are consistent with the particle spectral evolution resulting from time-dependent electric and magnetic fields, rather than the effects of the acceleration or the cooling processes. The proposed model is able to simultaneously account for the variability of both the energy spectrum and the light curve profile of the BL Lac object Mrk 421 with reasonable assumptions about the physical parameters. The results strongly indicate that the magnetic field evolution in the dissipated region of a blazar jet can account for the variabilities.

Electrons are accelerated at the shock wave diffuse and advect outward, and subsequently drift away into the emitting region of the jet that is located in the downstream flow from the plane shock. The current work considers the acceleration of the electrons in the shock front. Assuming a proper boundary condition at the interface between the shock and the downstream zones, a novel particle distribution in the downstream flow is proposed in this work to reproduce the broadband spectral energy distribution of BL Lac objects. We find that (1) we can obtain the particle distribution downstream of the shock wave in four cases; (2) electrons with higher energy ($γ>γ_{0}$) dominate the emission spectrum; (3) the distinctly important physical parameters assumed in our model can reasonably reproduce the multi-wavelength spectrum of the high-synchrotron-peaked BL Lac object Markarian 421 (Mrk 421).

At the current, pilot stage of the AMoRE project we employ six calcium molybdate crystals with a total mass of 1.9 kg, produced from $^{48}$Ca-depleted calcium and $^{100}$Mo-enriched molybdenum ($^{48\textrm{depl}}$Ca$^{100}$MoO$_4$). The simultaneous detection of heat(phonon) and scintillation (photon) signals is realized with high resolution metallic magnetic calorimeter sensors that operate at milli-Kelvin temperatures. This stage of the project is carried out in the Yangyang underground laboratory at a depth of 700 m. We report first results from the AMoRE-Pilot $0νββ$ search with a 111 kg$\cdot$d live exposure of $^{48\textrm{depl}}$Ca$^{100}$MoO$_4$ crystals. No evidence for $0νββ$ decay of $^{100}$Mo is found, and a upper limit is set for the half-life of 0$νββ$ of $^{100}$Mo of $T^{0ν}_{1/2} > 9.5\times10^{22}$ y at 90% C.L.. This limit corresponds to an effective Majorana neutrino mass limit in the range $\langle m_{ββ}\rangle\le(1.2-2.1)$ eV.

There are still some important unanswered questions about the detailed particle acceleration and escape occurring during the quiescent epoches. As a result, the particle distribution that is adopted in the blazar quiescent spectral model have numerous unconstrained shapes. To help remedy this problem, we introduce a analytical particle transport model to reproduce quiescent broadband spectral energy distribution of blazar. In this model, the exact electron distribution is solved from a generalized transport equation that contains the terms describing first-order and secondary-order \emph{Fermi} acceleration, escape of particle due to both the advection and spatial diffusion, energy losses due to synchrotron emission and inverse-Compton scattering of an assumed soft photon field. We suggest that the advection is a significant escape mechanism in blazar jet. We find that in our model the advection process tends to harden the particle distribution, which enhances the high energy components of resulting synchrotron and synchrotron self-Comptom spectrum from jet. Our model is able to roughly reproduce the observed spectra of extreme BL Lac object 1ES 0414+009 with reasonable assumptions about the physical parameters.

We present an ordinary case in the momentum diffusion equation for the electron spectrum evolution and investigate the energy spectra and time dependent properties of flare in Mrk 421 in the frame of a time-dependent one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model. In this model, electrons are accelerated to extra-relativistic energy through the strong magnetic turbulence and evolve with time, and non-thermal photons are produced by both synchrotron and inverse Comtpon scattering off synchrotron photons. Moreover, non-thermal photons during a pre-flare are produced by the relativistic electrons in the steady state and those during a flare are produced by the electrons whose injection rate is changed during some time interval. We apply the model to the energy spectra and time-dependent properties of flares in Mrk 421 by reproducing the pre-burst spectrum of the source and varying the injection rate in the Bohm diffusion (q=1) and the hard sphere approximation (q=2) case, respectively. Our results show that Bohm diffusion case leads to hard photon spectra, and hard sphere case approximation seems to reproduce the energy spectra and the time dependent properties of flare still better.

Context. Very high-energy (VHE) $γ$-ray measurements of distant TeV blazars can be nicely explained by TeV spectra induced by ultra high-energy cosmic rays.
Aims. We develop a model for a plausible origin of hard spectra in distant TeV blazars. Methods. In the model, the TeV emission in distant TeV blazars is dominated by two mixed components. The first is the internal component with the photon energy around 1 TeV produced by inverse Compton scattering of the relativistic electrons on the synchrotron photons (SSC) with a correction for extragalactic background light absorbtion and the other is the external component with the photon energy more than 1 TeV produced by the cascade emission from high-energy protons propagating through intergalactic space.
Results. Assuming suitable model parameters, we apply the model to observed spectra of distant TeV blazars of 1ES 0229+200. Our results show that 1) the observed spectrum properties of 1ES 0229+200, especially the TeV $γ$-ray tail of the observed spectra, could be reproduced in our model and 2) an expected TeV $γ$-ray spectrum with photon energy $>$1 TeV of 1ES 0229+200 should be comparable with the 50-hour sensitivity goal of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) and the differential sensitivity curve for the one-year observation with the Large High Altitude Air Shower Observatory (LHAASO).
Conclusions. We argue that strong evidence for the Bethe-Heitler cascades along the line of sight as a plausible origin of hard spectra in distant TeV blazars could be obtained from VHE observations with CTA, LHAASO, HAWC, and HiSCORE.

Efforts have been ongoing to establish superconducting spintronics utilizing ferromagnet/superconductor heterostructures1. Previously reported devices are based on spin-singlet superconductors (SSCs), where the spin degree of freedom is lost. Spin-polarized supercurrent induction in ferromagnetic metals (FMs) is achieved even with SSCs, but only with the aid of interfacial complex magnetic structures, which severely affect information imprinted to the electron spin. Use of spin-triplet superconductors (TSCs) with active spins potentially overcomes this difficulty and further leads to novel functionalities. Here, we report spin-triplet superconductivity induction into a FM SrRuO3 from a leading TSC candidate Sr2RuO4, by fabricating microscopic devices using an epitaxial SrRuO3/Sr2RuO4 hybrid. The differential conductance, exhibiting Andreev-reflection features with multiple energy scales up to around half tesla, indicates the penetration of superconductivity over a considerable distance of 15 nm across the SrRuO3 layer without help of interfacial complex magnetism. This demonstrates the first FM/TSC device exhibiting the spin-triplet proximity effect.

We report experiments on surface nanopatterning of Si targets which are irradiated with 2 keV Ar + ions im**ing at near-glancing incidence, under concurrent co-deposition of Au impurities simultaneously extracted from a gold target by the same ion beam. Previous recent experiments by a number of groups suggest that silicide formation is a prerequisite for pattern formation in the presence of metallic impurities. In spite of the fact that Au is known not to form stable compounds with the Si atoms, ripples nonetheless emerge in our experiments with nanometric wavelengths and small amplitudes, and with an orientation that changes with distance to the Au source. We provide results of sample analysis through Auger electron and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopies for their space-resolved chemical composition, and through atomic force, scanning transmission electron, and high-resolution transmission microscopies for their morphological properties. We discuss these findings in the light of current continuum models for this class of systems. The composition of and the dynamics within the near-surface amorphized layer that ensues is expected to play a relevant role to account for the unexpected formation of these surface structures.

The AMoRE (Advanced Mo-based Rare process Experiment) project is a series of experiments that use advanced cryogenic techniques to search for the neutrinoless double-beta decay of \mohundred. The work is being carried out by an international collaboration of researchers from eight countries. These searches involve high precision measurements of radiation-induced temperature changes and scintillation light produced in ultra-pure \Mo[100]-enriched and \Ca[48]-depleted calcium molybdate ($\mathrm{^{48depl}Ca^{100}MoO_4}$) crystals that are located in a deep underground laboratory in Korea. The \mohundred nuclide was chosen for this \zeronubb decay search because of its high $Q$-value and favorable nuclear matrix element. Tests have demonstrated that \camo crystals produce the brightest scintillation light among all of the molybdate crystals, both at room and at cryogenic temperatures. $\mathrm{^{48depl}Ca^{100}MoO_4}$ crystals are being operated at milli-Kelvin temperatures and read out via specially developed metallic-magnetic-calorimeter (MMC) temperature sensors that have excellent energy resolution and relatively fast response times. The excellent energy resolution provides good discrimination of signal from backgrounds, and the fast response time is important for minimizing the irreducible background caused by random coincidence of two-neutrino double-beta decay events of \mohundred nuclei. Comparisons of the scintillating-light and phonon yields and pulse shape discrimination of the phonon signals will be used to provide redundant rejection of alpha-ray-induced backgrounds. An effective Majorana neutrino mass sensitivity that reaches the expected range of the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy, i.e., 20-50 meV, could be achieved with a 200~kg array of $\mathrm{^{48depl}Ca^{100}MoO_4}$ crystals operating for three years.

We propose an effective technique to solving review-level sentiment classification problem by using sentence-level polarity correction. Our polarity correction technique takes into account the consistency of the polarities (positive and negative) of sentences within each product review before performing the actual machine learning task. While sentences with inconsistent polarities are removed, sentences with consistent polarities are used to learn state-of-the-art classifiers. The technique achieved better results on different types of products reviews and outperforms baseline models without the correction technique. Experimental results show an average of 82% F-measure on four different product review domains.

Ferromagnetic SrRuO3 thin films are deposited on the ab-surface of single crystals of the spin-triplet superconductor Sr2RuO4 as substrates using pulsed laser deposition. The films are under a severe in-plane compressive strain. Nevertheless, the films exhibit ferromagnetic order with the easy axis along the c-direction below the Curie temperature of 158 K. The electrical transport reveals that the SrRuO3/Sr2RuO4 interface is highly conducting, in contrast with the interface between other normal-metals and the ab-surface of Sr2RuO4. Our results will stimulate the investigations on proximity effects between a ferromagnet and a spin-triplet superconductor.

Precipitate strengthening of light metals underpins a large segment of industry.Yet, quantitative understanding of physics involved in precipitate formation is often lacking, especially, about interfacial contribution to the energetics of precipitate formation. Here, we report an intricate strain accommodation and free energy minimization mechanism in the formation of Omega precipitates (Al2Cu)in the Al_Cu_Mg_Ag alloy. We show that the affinity between Ag and Mg at the interface provides the driving force for lowering the heat of formation, while substitution between Mg, Al and Cu of different atomic radii at interfacial atomic sites alters interfacial thickness and adjust precipitate misfit strain. The results here highlight the importance of interfacial structure in precipitate formation, and the potential of combining the power of atomic resolution imaging with first-principles theory for unraveling the mystery of physics at nanoscale interfaces.

When a colloidal sessile droplet dries on a substrate, the particles suspended in it usually deposit in a ring-like pattern. This phenomenon is commonly referred to as the "coffee-ring" effect. One paradigm for why this occurs is as a consequence of the solutes being transported towards the pinned contact line by the flow inside the drop, which is induced by surface evaporation. From this perspective, the role of the liquid-gas interface in sha** the deposition pattern is somewhat minimized. Here, we propose an alternative mechanism for the coffee-ring deposition. It is based on the bulk flow within the drop transporting particles to the interface where they are captured by the receding free surface and subsequently transported along the interface until they are deposited near the contact line. That the interface captures the solutes as the evaporation proceeds is supported by a Lagrangian tracing of particles advected by the flow field within the droplet. We model the interfacial adsorption and transport of particles as a one-dimensional advection-generation process in toroidal coordinates and show that the theory reproduces ring-shaped depositions. Using this model, deposition patterns on both hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces are examined in which the evaporation is modeled as being either diffusive or uniform over the surface.
