As evidenced by recent survey results, majority of asteroids are slow rotators (P>12 h), but lack spin and shape models due to selection bias. This bias is skewing our overall understanding of the spins, shapes, and sizes of asteroids, as well as of their other properties. Also, diameter determinations for large (>60km) and medium-sized asteroids (between 30 and 60 km) often vary by over 30% for multiple reasons.
Our long-term project is focused on a few tens of slow rotators with periods of up to 60 hours. We aim to obtain their full light curves and reconstruct their spins and shapes. We also precisely scale the models, typically with an accuracy of a few percent.
We used wide sets of dense light curves for spin and shape reconstructions via light-curve inversion. Precisely scaling them with thermal data was not possible here because of poor infrared data: large bodies are too bright for WISE mission. Therefore, we recently launched a campaign among stellar occultation observers, to scale these models and to verify the shape solutions, often allowing us to break the mirror pole ambiguity.
The presented scheme resulted in shape models for 16 slow rotators, most of them for the first time. Fitting them to stellar occultations resolved previous inconsistencies in size determinations. For around half of the targets, this fitting also allowed us to identify a clearly preferred pole solution, thus removing the ambiguity inherent to light-curve inversion. We also address the influence of the uncertainty of the shape models on the derived diameters.
Overall, our project has already provided reliable models for around 50 slow rotators. Such well-determined and scaled asteroid shapes will, e.g. constitute a solid basis for density determinations when coupled with mass information. Spin and shape models continue to fill the gaps caused by various biases.

We present the results of our analysis of Gaia19dke, an extraordinary microlensing event in the Cygnus constellation that was first spotted by the {\gaia} satellite. This event featured a strong microlensing parallax effect, which resulted in multiple peaks in the light curve. We conducted extensive photometric, spectroscopic, and high-resolution imaging follow-up observations to determine the mass and the nature of the invisible lensing object. Using the Milky Way priors on density and velocity of lenses, we found that the dark lens is likely to be located at a distance of $D_L =(3.05^{+4.10}_{-2.42})$kpc, and has a mass of $M_L =(0.51^{+3.07}_{-0.40}) M_\odot$. Based on its low luminosity and mass, we propose that the lens in Gaia19dke event is an isolated white dwarf.

Context. The close approach of the near-Earth asteroid (99942) Apophis to Earth in 2029 will provide a unique opportunity to examine how the physical properties of the asteroid could be changed due to the Earth's gravitational perturbation. As a result, the Republic of Korea is planning a rendezvous mission to Apophis. Aims. Our aim was to use photometric data from the apparitions in 2020-2021 to refine the shape model and spin state of Apophis. Methods. Using thirty-six 1 to 2-m class ground-based telescopes and the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite, we performed a photometric observation campaign throughout the 2020-2021 apparition. The convex shape model and spin state were refined using the light-curve inversion method. Results. According to our best-fit model, Apophis is rotating in a short axis mode with rotation and precession periods of 264.178 hours and 27.38547 hours, respectively. The angular momentum vector orientation of Apophis was found as (275$^\circ$, -85$^\circ$) in the ecliptic coordinate system. The ratio of the dynamic moments of inertia of this asteroid was fitted to $I_a:I_b:I_c=0.64:0.97:1$, which corresponds to an elongated prolate ellipsoid. These findings regarding the spin state and shape model could be used to not only design the space mission scenario but also investigate the impact of the Earth's tidal force during close encounters.

The field of spinoptronics is underpinned by good control over photonic spin-orbit coupling in devices that possess strong optical nonlinearities. Such devices might hold the key to a new era of optoelectronics where momentum and polarization degrees-of-freedom of light are interwoven and interfaced with electronics. However, manipulating photons through electrical means is a daunting task given their charge neutrality and requires complex electro-optic modulation of their medium. In this work, we present electrically tunable microcavity exciton-polariton resonances in a Rashba-Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling field at room temperature. We show that a combination of different spin orbit coupling fields and the reduced cavity symmetry leads to tunable formation of Berry curvature, the hallmark of quantum geometrical effects. For this, we have implemented a novel architecture of a hybrid photonic structure with a two-dimensional perovskite layer incorporated into a microcavity filled with nematic liquid crystal. Our work interfaces spinoptronic devices with electronics by combining electrical control over both the strong light-matter coupling conditions and artificial gauge fields.

On 4 March 2021 at 9 UTC a 30-m in diameter near-Earth asteroid 2021 DW1 passed the Earth at a distance of 570000 km, reaching the maximum brightness of V=14.6 mag. We observed it photometrically from 2 March, when it was visible at V=16.5 mag, until 7 March (V=18.2 mag). During that time 2021 DW1 swept a 170 degrees long arc in the northern sky, spanning solar phase angles in the range from 36 to 86 degrees. This made it an excellent target for physical characterisation, including spin axis and shape derivation. Convex inversion of the asteroid lightcurves gives a sidereal period of rotation P=0.013760 +/- 0.000001 h, and two solutions for the spin axis ecliptic coordinates: (A) lambda_1=57 +/- 10, beta_1=29 +/- 10, and (B) lambda_2=67 +/- 10, beta_2=-40 +/- 10. The magnitude-phase curve can be fitted with a standard H, G function with H=24.8 +/- 0.5 mag and an assumed G=0.24. The asteroid colour indices are g-i=0.79 +/- 0.01 mag, and i-z=0.01 +/- 0.02 mag which indicates an S taxonomic class, with an average geometric albedo p_V=0.23 +/- 0.02. The asteroid effective diameter, derived from H and p_V, is D=30 +/- 10 m. It was found that the inclination of the spin axis of 2021 DW1 is not perpendicular to the orbital plane (obliquity epsilon=54 +/- 10 or epsilon=123 +/- 10). More spin axes of VSAs should be determined to check, if 2021 DW1 is an exception or a typical case.

Results from the TESS mission showed that previous studies strngly underestimated the number of slow rotators, revealing the importance of studying those asteroids. For most slowly rotating asteroids (P > 12), no spin and shape model is available because of observation selection effects. This hampers determination of their thermal parameters and accurate sizes.
We continue our campaign in minimising selection effects among main belt asteroids. Our targets are slow rotators with low light-curve amplitudes. The goal is to provide their scaled spin and shape models together with thermal inertia, albedo, and surface roughness to complete the statistics. Rich multi-apparition datasets of dense light curves are supplemented with data from Kepler and TESS. In addition to data in the visible range, we also use thermal data from infrared space observatories (IRAS, Akari and WISE) in a combined optimisation process using the Convex Inversion Thermophysical Model (CITPM). This novel method has so far been applied to only a few targets, and in this work we further validate the method.
We present the models of 16 slow rotators. All provide good fits to both thermal and visible data. The obtained sizes are on average accurate at the 5% precision, with diameters in the range from 25 to 145 km. The rotation periods of our targets range from 11 to 59 hours, and the thermal inertia covers a wide range of values, from 2 to <400 SI units, not showing any correlation with the period. With this work we increase the sample of slow rotators with reliable spin and shape models and known thermal inertia by 40%. The thermal inertia values of our sample do not display a previously suggested increasing trend with rotation period, which might be due to their small skin depth.

Long gamma-ray bursts (GRB), explosions of very massive stars, provide crucial information on stellar and galaxy evolution, even at redshifts z ~ 8 - 9.5, when the Universe was only 500-600 million years old. Recently, during observations of a galaxy at a redshift of z ~ 11 (400 million years after the Big Bang), a bright signal, named GN-z11-flash, shorter than 245 s was detected and interpreted as an ultraviolet flash associated with a GRB in this galaxy, or a shock-breakout in a Population III supernova. Its resulting luminosity would be consistent with that of other GRBs, but a discussion based on probability arguments started on whether this is instead a signal from a man-made satellite or a Solar System object. Here we show a conclusive association of GN-z11-flash with Breeze-M upper stage of a Russian Proton rocket on a highly elliptical orbit. This rules out GN-z11-flash as the most distant GRB ever detected. It also implies that monitoring of a larger sample of very high redshift galaxies is needed to detect such distant GRBs. This also highlights the importance of a complete database of Earth satellites and debris, which can allow proper interpretation of astronomical observations.

By using four layered graphene/gallium nitride (GaN) Schottky diodes with an undoped GaN spacer, we demonstrate highly effective gating of graphene at low bias rendering this type of structure very promising for potential applications. An observed Raman G band position shift larger than 8.5 cm-1 corresponds to an increase in carrier concentration of about 1.2x10^13 cm-2. The presence of a distinct G band splitting together with a narrow symmetric 2D band indicates turbostratic layer stacking and suggests the presence of a high potential gradient near the Schottky junction even at zero bias. The subbands characterized by the highest Raman energies correspond to the largest concentration of electrons. An analysis based on electroreflectance measurements and a modified Richardson equation confirmed that graphene on n-GaN separated by an undoped GaN spacer behaves like a capacitor at reverse bias. At least 60% of G subband position shifts occur at forward bias, which is related to a rapid reduction of electric field near the Schottky junction. Raman micromap** shows a high uniformity of gating efficiency on the surface. Therefore, our studies demonstrate the usefulness of few layer turbostratic graphene deposited on GaN for tracing electron-phonon coupling in graphene. Multilayer graphene also provides uniform and stable electric contacts. Moreover, the observed bias sensitive G band splitting can be used as an indicator of charge transfer in sensor applications in the low bias regime.

Chemically peculiar (CP) stars of the upper main sequence are characterised by specific anomalies in the photospheric abundances of some chemical elements. The group of CP2 stars, which encompasses classical Ap and Bp stars, exhibits strictly periodic light, spectral, and spectropolarimetric variations that can be adequately explained by the model of a rigidly rotating star with persistent surface structures and a stable global magnetic field. Using observations from the Kepler K2 mission, we find that the B9pSi star HD 174356 displays a light curve both variable in amplitude and shape, which is not expected in a CP2 star. Employing archival and new photometric and spectroscopic observations, we carry out a detailed abundance analysis of HD 174356 and discuss its photometric and astrophysical properties in detail. We employ phenomenological modeling to decompose the light curve and the observed radial velocity variability. Our abundance analysis confirms that HD 174356 is a silicon-type CP2 star. No magnetic field stronger than 110G was found. The star's light curve can be interpreted as the sum of two independent strictly periodic signals with P1 = 4.04355(5)d and P2 = 2.11169(3)d. The periods have remained stable over 17 years of observations. In all spectra, HD 174356 appears to be single-lined. From the simulation of the variability characteristics and investigation of stars in the close angular vicinity, we put forth the hypothesis that the peculiar light variability of HD 174356 arises in a single star and is caused by rotational modulation due to surface abundance patches (P1) and g mode pulsation (P2).

Context. Earlier work suggests that slowly rotating asteroids should have higher thermal inertias than faster rotators because the heat wave penetrates deeper into the sub-surface. However, thermal inertias have been determined mainly for fast rotators due to selection effects in the available photometry used to obtain shape models required for thermophysical modelling (TPM).
Aims. Our aims are to mitigate these selection effects by producing shape models of slow rotators, to scale them and compute their thermal inertia with TPM, and to verify whether thermal inertia increases with the rotation period.
Methods. To decrease the bias against slow rotators, we conducted a photometric observing campaign of main-belt asteroids with periods longer than 12 hours, from multiple stations worldwide, adding in some cases data from WISE and Kepler space telescopes. For spin and shape reconstruction we used the lightcurve inversion method, and to derive thermal inertias we applied a thermophysical model to fit available infrared data from IRAS, AKARI, and WISE.
Results. We present new models of 11 slow rotators that provide a good fit to the thermal data. In two cases, the TPM analysis showed a clear preference for one of the two possible mirror solutions. We derived the diameters and albedos of our targets in addition to their thermal inertias, which ranged between 3$^{+33}_{-3}$ and 45$^{+60}_{-30}$ Jm$^{-2}$s$^{-1/2}$K$^{-1}$.
Conclusions. Together with our previous work, we have analysed 16 slow rotators from our dense survey with sizes between 30 and 150 km. The current sample thermal inertias vary widely, which does not confirm the earlier suggestion that slower rotators have higher thermal inertias.

We present detailed Raman studies of graphene deposited on gallium nitride nanowires with different variations in height. Our results show that different density and height of nanowires being in contact with graphene impact graphene properties like roughness, strain and carrier concentration as well as density and type of induced defects. Detailed analysis of Raman spectra of graphene deposited on different nanowire substrates shows that bigger differences in nanowires height increase graphene strain, while higher number of nanowires in contact with graphene locally reduce the strain. Moreover, the value of graphene carrier concentration is found to be correlated with the density of nanowires in contact with graphene. Analysis of intensity ratios of Raman G, D and D' bands enable to trace how nanowire substrate impacts the defect concentration and type. The lowest concentration of defects is observed for graphene deposited on nanowires of the lowest density. Contact between graphene and densely arranged nanowires leads to a large density of vacancies. On the other hand, grain boundaries are the main type of defects in graphene on rarely distributed nanowires. Our results also show modification of graphene carrier concentration and strain by different types of defects present in graphene.

The intensity of graphene Raman spectra was found not to be correlated with aluminium content. Analysis of graphene Raman bands parameters, KPFM and electroreflectance showed a screening of polarization charges. Theoretical calculations showed that plasmon resonance in graphene is far beyond the Raman spectral range. This excludes the presence of an electromagnetic mechanism of SERS and therefore suggests the chemical mechanism of enhancement.

Spontaneous decays of small, hot silver cluster anions Ag$_{n}$, $n=4-7$ have been studied using one of the rings of the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment (DESIREE). Observation of these decays over very long time scales is possible due to the very low residual gas pressure ($\sim10^{-14}$) and cryogenic (13 K) operation of DESIREE. The yield of neutral particles from stored beams of Ag$_{6}$ and Ag$_{7}$ anions were measured for 100 milliseconds and were found to follow single power law behaviour with millisecond time scale exponential cut-offs. The Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$ anions were stored for 60 seconds and the observed decays show two-component power law behaviors. We present calculations of the rate constants for electron detachment from, and fragmentation of Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$. In these calculations, we assume that the internal energy distribution of the clusters are flat and with this we reproduce the early steep parts of the experimentally measured decay curves for Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$, which extends to tens and hundreds of milliseconds, respectively. The fact that the calculations reproduce the early slopes of Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$, which differ for the two cases, suggests that it is the changes in fragmentation rates with internal cluster energies of Ag$_{4}$ and Ag$_{5}$ rather than conditions in the ion source that determines this behavior. Comparisons with the measurements strongly suggest that the neutral particles detected in these time domains originate from Ag$_{4} \rightarrow$ Ag$_{3}+$ Ag and Ag$_{5}\rightarrow$ Ag$_{3}+$ Ag$_{2}$ fragmentation processes.

We have measured total absolute cross sections for the Mutual Neutralization (MN) of O- with O+/N+. A fine resolution (of about 50 meV) in the kinetic energy spectra of the product neutral atoms allows unique identification of the atomic states participating in the mutual neutralization process. Cross sections and branching ratios have also been calculated down to 1 meV center-of-mass collision energy for these two systems with a multi-channel Landau-Zener model and an asymptotic method for the ionic-covalent coupling matrix elements. The importance of two-electron processes in one-electron transfer is demonstrated by the dominant contribution of a core-excited configuration of the nitrogen atom in N+ + O- collisions. This effect is partially accounted for by introducing configuration mixing in the evaluation of coupling matrix elements.

We have measured the spontaneous neutral particle emission from copper cluster anions (Cu$_n^-$, $n=3-6$) stored at cryogenic temperatures in one of the electrostatic ion storage rings of the DESIREE (Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring ExpEriment) facility at Stockholm University. The measured rate of emission from the stored Cu$_3^-$ ions follows a single power law decay for about 1 ms but then decreases much more rapidly with time. The latter behavior may be due to a decrease in the density of available final states in Cu$_3$ as the excitation energies of the decaying ions approach the electron detachment threshold. The emissions from Cu$_4^-$, Cu$_5^-$ and Cu$_6^-$ are well-described by sums of two power laws that are quenched by radiative cooling of the stored ions with characteristic times between a few and hundreds of milliseconds. We relate these two-component behaviors to populations of stored ions with higher and lower angular momenta. In a separate experiment, we studied the laser-induced decay of Cu$_6^-$ ions that were excited by 1.13 eV or 1.45 eV photons after 46 milliseconds of storage.

A sputter ion source with a solid graphite target has been used to produce dianions with a focus on carbon cluster dianions, $\text{C}_{n}^{2-}$, with $n=7-24$. Singly and doubly charged anions from the source were accelerated together to kinetic energies of 10 keV per atomic unit of charge and injected into one of the cryogenic (13 K) ion-beam storage rings of the Double ElectroStatic Ion Ring Experiment facility at Stockholm University. Spontaneous decay of internally hot $\text{C}_{n}^{2-}$ dianions injected into the ring yielded $\text{C}^{-}$ anions with kinetic energies of 20 keV, which were counted with a microchannel plate detector. Mass spectra produced by scanning the magnetic field of a $90^{\circ}$ analyzing magnet on the ion injection line reflect the production of internally hot $\text{C}_{7}^{2-}-\text{C}_{24}^{2-}$ dianions with lifetimes in the range of tens of microseconds to milliseconds. In spite of the high sensitivity of this method, no conclusive evidence of $\text{C}_{6}^{2-}$ was found while there was a clear $\text{C}_{7}^{2-}$ signal with the expect isotopic distribution. An upper limit is deduced for a $\text{C}_{6}^{2-}$ signal that is two orders-of-magnitue smaller than that for $\text{C}_{7}^{2-}$. In addition, $\text{C}_{n}\text{O}^{2-}$ and $\text{CsCu}^{2-}$ dianions were detected.

The intrinsic lifetime of the higher-lying $5d^{10}6s$ $^{2}\text{S}_{1/2}$ state was measurement to be 2.54$\pm$0.10 s, while only a lifetime in the range of 50 - 200 ms could be estimated for the $5d^{9}6s^{2}$ $^{2}\text{D}_{3/2}$ fine-structure level. The storage lifetime of the $\text{Pt}^{-}$ ion beam was measured to be a little over 15 minutes at a ring temperature of 13 K. The present study reports the lifetime of an atomic negative ion in an excited bound state with an electron configuration different from that of the ground state.

We apply near-threshold laser photodetachment to characterize the rotational quantum level distribution of OH$^-$ ions stored in the cryogenic ion-beam storage ring, DESIREE, at Stockholm University. We find that the stored ions relax to a rotational temperature of 13.4$\pm$0.2 K with 94.9$\pm$0.3 % of the ions in the rotational ground state. This is consistent with the storage ring temperature of 13.5$\pm$0.5 K as measured with eight silicon diodes, but in contrast to all earlier studies in cryogenic traps and rings where the rotational temperatures were always much higher than those of the storage devices at their lowest temperatures. Furthermore, we actively modify the rotational distribution through selective photodetachment to produce an OH$^-$ beam where 99.1$\pm$0.1 % of approximately one million stored ions are in the $J$=0 rotational ground state.

We report the discovery of two massive eccentric systems with BRITE data, $τ$ Ori and $τ$ Lib, showing heartbeat effects close to the periastron passage. $τ$ Lib exhibits shallow eclipses that will soon vanish due to the apsidal motion in the system. In neither system, tidally excited oscillations were detected.

A constant height of gallium nitride (GaN) nanowires with graphene deposited on them is shown to have a strong enhancement of Raman scattering, whilst variable height nanowires fail to give such an enhancement. Scanning electron microscopy reveals a smooth graphene surface which is present when the GaN nanowires are uniform, whereas graphene on nanowires with substantial height differences is observed to be pierced and stretched by the uppermost nanowires. The energy shifts of the characteristic Raman bands confirms that these differences in the nanowire height has a significant impact on the local graphene strain and the carrier concentration. The images obtained by Kelvin probe force microscopy show clearly that the carrier concentration in graphene is modulated by the nanowire substrate and dependent on the nanowire density. Therefore, the observed surface enhanced Raman scattering for graphene deposited on GaN nanowires of comparable height is triggered by self-induced nano-gating to the graphene. However, no clear correlation of the enhancement with the strain or the carrier concentration of graphene was discovered.

The influence of GaN nanowires on the optical and electrical properties of graphene deposited on them was studied using Raman spectroscopy and microwave induced electron transport method. It was found that interaction with the nanowires induces spectral changes as well as large enhancement of Raman scattering intensity. Surprisingly, the smallest enhancement (about 30-fold) was observed for the defect induced D' process and the highest intensity increase (over 50-fold) was found for the 2D transition. The observed energy shifts of the G and 2D bands allowed to determine carrier concentration fluctuations induced by GaN nanowires. Comparison of Raman scattering spatial intensity maps and the images obtained using scanning electron microscope led to conclusion that vertically aligned GaN nanowires induce a homogenous strain, substantial spatial modulation of carrier concentration in graphene and unexpected homogenous distribution of defects created by interaction with nanowires. The analysis of the D and D' peak intensity ratio showed that interaction with nanowires also changes the probability of scattering on different types of defects. The Raman studies were correlated with weak localization effect measured using microwave induced contactless electron transport. Temperature dependence of weak localization signal showed electron-electron scattering as a main decoherence mechanism with additional, temperature independent scattering reducing coherence length. We attributed it to the interaction of electrons in graphene with charges present on the top of nanowires due to spontaneous and piezoelectric polarization of GaN. Thus, nanowires act as antennas and generate enhanced near field which can explain the observed large enhancement of Raman scattering intensity.

Electron paramagnetic resonance was used to investigate Mn impurity in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ topological insulator grown by the vertical Bridgman method. Mn in high-spin S = 5/2, Mn$^2$$^+$ configuration, was detected regardless of the conductivity type of the host material. This means that Mn$^2$$^+$(d$^5$) energy level is located within the valence band, and Mn$^1$$^+$(d$^6$) energy level is outside the energy gap of Bi$_2$Se$_3$. The electron paramagnetic resonance spectrum of Mn$^2$$^+$ in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ is characterized by the isotropic g-factor |g| = 1.91 and large axial parameter D = -4.20 GHz x h. This corresponds to the zero-field splitting of the Kramers doublets equal to 8.4 GHz x h and 16.8 GHz x h, respectively, which is comparable to the Zeeman splitting for the X-band. Mn in Bi$_2$Se$_3$ acts as an acceptor, effectively reducing native-high electron concentration, compensating selenium vacancies, and resulting in p-type conductivity.

Simultaneous observation of bulk Shubnikov - de Haas oscillations by contactless microwave spectroscopy allows determination of the Fermi level position. Occupation of topological surface states depends not only on bulk Fermi level but also on the surface band bending.
