Colliders are built on a foundation of superconducting magnet technology that provides strong dipole magnets to maintain the beam orbit and strong focusing magnets to enable the extraordinary luminosity required to probe physics at the energy frontier. The dipole magnet strength plays a critical role in dictating the energy reach of a collider, and the superconducting magnets are arguably the dominant cost driver for future collider facilities. As the community considers opportunities to explore new energy frontiers, the importance of advanced magnet technology - both in terms of magnet performance and in the magnet technology's potential for cost reduction - is evident, as the technology status is essential for informed decisions on targets for physics reach and facility feasibility.

We propose a targeted attack on making the Fe-based superconductor (FBS) AEFe2As2 (122) (AE = alkaline earth, here Ba or Sr) into a much cheaper, higher stability margin, round, twisted and effectively isotropic multifilament conductor suitable for 16-20 T dipole magnet construction. This white paper urges to greatly accelerate progress by providing a fundamental understanding of what controls the transport critical current density, Jc, of 122 polycrystals and then in the wire forms. High grain-to-grain Jc is the one key property not yet fully demonstrated in this new superconductor and this is the key breakthrough that would make 122 practical. Whereas the intragrain (i.e. vortex pinning) Jc is already high enough to replace Nb3Sn, our recent work strongly suggests that unpredictable superconducting connectivity at grain boundaries (GBs) is the critical problem that limits the long-range Jc. We strongly emphasize the need to evaluate the true intrinsic nature of GBs in the polycrystalline forms before focusing on the wire fabrication.

Understanding what makes Bi$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_1$Cu$_2$O$_x$ (Bi-2212) the only high critical current density ($J_c$), high temperature superconductor (HTS) capable of being made as a round wire (RW) is important intellectually because high $J_c$ RW Bi-2212 breaks the paradigm that forces biaxially textured REBCO and uniaxially textured (Bi,Pb)$_2$Sr$_2$Ca$_2$Cu$_3$O$_x$ (Bi-2223) into tape geometries that reproduce the strong anisotropy of the native crystal structure and force expensive fabrication routes to ensure the best possible texture with minimum density of high angle grain boundaries. The biaxial growth texture of Bi-2212 developed during a partial melt heat treatment should favor high $J_c$, even though its $\sim$15$^{\circ}$ full width at half maximum (FWHM) grain-to-grain misorientation is well beyond the commonly accepted strong-coupling range. Its ability to be strongly overdoped should be valuable too, since underdoped cuprate grain boundaries are widely believed to be weakly linked. Accordingly, we here study property changes after oxygen underdo** the optimized, overdoped wire. While $J_c$ and vortex pinning diminish significantly in underdoped wires, we were not able to develop the prominent weak-link signature (a hysteretic $J_c$(H) characteristic) evident in even the very best Bi-2223 tapes with a $\sim$ 15$^{\circ}$ FWHM uniaxial texture. We attribute the high $J_c$ and lack of weak link signature in our Bi-2212 round wires to the high-aspect ratio, large-grain, basal-plane-faced grain morphology produced by partial-melt processing of Bi-2212 which enables $c$-axis Brick-Wall current flow when $ab$-plane transport is blocked. We conclude that the presently optimized biaxial texture of Bi-2212 intrinsically constitutes a strongly coupled current path, regardless of its oxygen do** state.

Here we show that addition of Hf to Nb4Ta can significantly improve the high field performance of Nb$_{3}$Sn, making it suitable for dipole magnets for Future Circular Collider (FCC). A big challenge for the FCC is that a realistic production target for FCC Nb3Sn requires ~30% improvement over current conductor performance. Recent success with internal oxidation(IO) of Nb-Zr precursor has shown significant improvement in the layer J$_{c}$ of Nb$_{3}$Sn wires, albeit the complication of providing an internal O$_{2}$ diffusion path and avoiding degradation of irreversibility field($_{irr}$). We compare Zr and Hf additions to the standard Nb4Ta alloy of maximum H$_{c2}$ and H$_{irr}$. Nb4Ta rods with 1Zr or 1Hf were made into monofilament wires with and without SnO$_{2}$ and their properties measured over the entire superconducting range up to 31 T. We found that group IV alloying of Nb4Ta raises H$_{irr}$, though adding O$_{2}$ still degrades this slightly. As noted in Nb1Zr studies, the pinning force density F$_{p}$ is strongly enhanced and its peak value shifted to higher field by IO. A surprising result of this work is that we found better properties in Nb4Ta1Hf without SnO$_{2}$, F$_{pmax}$ achieving 2.35 times that of the standard Nb4Ta alloy, while the oxidized Nb4Ta1Zr alloy achieved 1.54 times that of the Nb4Ta alloy. The highest layer J$_{c}$ (16 T, 4.2 K) of 3700 A/mm$^{2}$ was found in the SnO$_{2}$-free wire made with Nb4Ta1Hf alloy. Using a standard A15 cross-section fraction of 60% for modern PIT and RRP wires, we estimated that a non-Cu J$_{c}$ of 2200 A/mm$^{2}$ is obtainable in modern conductors, well above the 1500A/mm$^{2}$ FCC specification. Moreover, the best properties were obtained without SnO$_{2}$, the Nb4Ta1Hf alloy appears to open a straightforward route to enhanced properties in Nb$_{3}$Sn wires.

CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ is an exemplary correlated electron metal that features two domes of unconventional superconductivity in its temperature-pressure phase diagram. The first dome surrounds an antiferromagnetic quantum critical point, whereas the more exotic second dome may span the termination point of a line of $f$-electron valence transitions. This behavior has received intense interest, but what has been missing are ways to access the high pressure behavior under milder conditions. Here we study Si $\rightarrow$ P chemical substitution, which compresses the unit cell volume but simultaneously weakens the hybridization between the $f$- and conduction electron states and encourages complex magnetism. At concentrations that show magnetism, applied pressure suppresses the magnetic ordering temperature and superconductivity is recovered for samples with low disorder. These results reveal that the electronic behavior in this system is controlled by a nontrivial combination of effects from unit cell volume and electronic shell filling. Guided by this topography we discuss prospects for uncovering a valence fluctuation quantum phase transition in the broader family of Ce-based ThCr$_2$Si$_2$-type materials through chemical substitution.

The heavy fermion intermetallic compound URu2Si2 exhibits a "hidden-order" phase below the temperature of 17.5 K, which supports both anomalous metallic behavior and unconventional superconductivity. While these individual phenomena have been investigated in detail, it remains unclear how they are related to each other and to what extent uranium f-electron valence fluctuations influence each one. Here we use ligand site substituted URu2Si2-xPx to establish their evolution under electronic tuning. We find that while hidden order is monotonically suppressed and destroyed for x $\leq$ 0.035, the superconducting strength evolves through a dome that is centered near $x$ $\approx$ 0.01 and terminates near $x$ $\approx$ 0.028. This behavior reveals that hidden order depends strongly on tuning outside of the U f-electron shells. It also suggests that while hidden order provides an environment for superconductivity and anomalous metallic behavior, it's fluctuations are not solely responsible for their progression.

The residual low angle grain boundary (GB) network is still the most important current-limiting mechanism operating in bi-axially textured rare earth barium copper oxide (REBCO) coated conductors. While Ca-do** is well established to improve super-current flow across low angle GBs in weak fields at high temperatures, Ca-do** also depresses Tc, making it so far impractical for high temperature applications of REBCO coated conductors. On the other hand, high field magnet applications of REBCO require low temperatures. Here we systematically evaluate the effectiveness of Ca-do** in improving the GB transparency, r$^{GB}$= Jc$^{GB}$/Jc$^{grain}$ , of low angle Yb1-xCaxBaCuO [001] tilt bi-crystal films down to 10K and with magnetic fields perpendicular and parallel to the film surfaces, while varying the Ca and oxygen do** level. Using Low Temperature Scanning Laser Microscopy (LTSLM) and Magneto-Optical Imaging (MOI), we found rGB to strongly depend on the angle between magnetic field and the GB plane and clearly identified regimes in which Jc$^{GB}$ can exceed Jc$^{grain}$ (r$^{GB}$>1) where the GB pinning is optimized by the field being parallel to the GB dislocations. However, even in this favorable situation, we found that r$^{GB}$ became much smaller at lower temperatures. Calculations of the GB Ca segregation profile predict that the high Jc channels between the GB dislocation cores are almost Ca-free. It may be therefore that the positive effects of Ca do** seen by many authors near Tc are partly a consequence of the higher Tc of these Ca-free channels.

Investigations of MgB2 and Fe-based superconductors in recent years have revealed many unusual effects of multiband superconductivity but manifestations of anisotropic multiband effects in the critical current density Jc have not been addressed experimentally, mostly because of the difficulties to measure Jc along the c-axis. To investigate the effect of very different intrinsic anisotropies of sigma and pi electron bands in MgB2 on current transport, we grew epitaxial films with tilted c-axis (THETA ~ 19.5°), which enabled us to measure the components of Jc both along the ab-plane and the c-axis using magneto-optical and transport techniques. These measurements were combined with scanning and transmission electron microscopy, which revealed terraced steps on the surface of the c-axis tilted films. The measured field and temperature dependencies of the anisotropic Jc(H) show that Jc,L parallel to the terraced steps is higher than Jc,T perpendicular to the terraced steps, and Jc of thinner films (50 nm) obtained from transport experiments at 0.1 T reaches ~10% of the depairing current density Jd in the ab plane, while magneto-optical imaging revealed much higher Jc at lower fields. To analyze the experimental data we developed a model of anisotropic vortex pinning which accounts for the observed behavior of Jc in the c-axis tilted films and suggests that the apparent anisotropy of Jc is affected by current pairbreaking effects in the weaker π band. Our results indicate that the out-of-plane current transport mediated by the π band could set the ultimate limit of Jc in MgB2 polycrystals.

Moreover, FBS are very sensitive to strain, which induces an important enhancement in critical temperature, Tc, of the material. In this paper we demonstrate that strain induced by the substrate can further improve Jc of both single and multilayer films by more than that expected simply due to the increase in Tc. The multilayer deposition of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 on CaF2 increases the pinning force density Fp by more than 60% compared to a single layer film, reaching a maximum of 84 GN/m^3 at 22.5T and 4.2 K, the highest value ever reported in any 122 phase.

Why Bi2Sr2CaCu2Ox (Bi2212) allows high critical current density Jc in round wires rather than only in the anisotropic tape form demanded by all other high temperature superconductors is important for future magnet applications. Here we compare the local texture of state-of-the-art Bi2212 and Bi2223 ((Bi,Pb)2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10), finding that round wire Bi2212 generates a dominant a-axis growth texture that also enforces a local biaxial texture (FWHM <15°) while simultaneously allowing the c-axes of its polycrystals to rotate azimuthally along and about the filament axis so as to generate macroscopically isotropic behavior. By contrast Bi2223 shows only a uniaxial (FWHM <15°) c-axis texture perpendicular to the tape plane without any in-plane texture. Consistent with these observations, a marked, field-increasing, field-decreasing Jc(H) hysteresis characteristic of weak-linked systems appears in Bi2223 but is absent in Bi2212 round wire. Growth-induced texture on cooling from the melt step of the Bi2212 Jc optimization process appears to be the key step in generating this highly desirable microstructure.

Significant progress has been achieved in fabricating high quality bulk and thinfilm iron-based superconductors. In particular, artificial layered pnictide superlattices offer the possibility of tailoring the superconducting properties and understanding the mechanism of the superconductivity itself. For high field applications, large critical current densities (Jc) and irreversibility fields (Hirr) are indispensable along all crystal directions. On the other hand, the development of superconducting devices such as tunnel junctions requires multilayered heterostructures. Here we show that artificially engineered undoped Ba-122 / Co doped Ba-122 compositionally modulated superlattices produce ab-aligned nanoparticle arrays. These layer and self-assemble along c-axis aligned defects, and combine to produce very large Jc and Hirr enhancements over a wide angular range. We also demonstrate a structurally modulated SrTiO3 (STO) / Co doped Ba-122 superlattice with sharp interfaces. Success in superlattice fabrication involving pnictides will aid the progress of heterostructured systems exhibiting novel interfacial phenomena and device applications.

A remarkable attribute of this Bi-2212 conductor is that it does not exhibit macroscopic texture and contains many high angle grain boundaries but nevertheless attains very high superconducting critical current densities Jc of 2500 A/mm2 at 20 T and 4.2 K. This Bi-2212 conductor does not possess the extreme texture that high Jc coated conductors of REBa2Cu3O7-x (REBCO) require, avoiding also its high aspect ratio, large superconducting anisotropy and the inherent sensitivity to defects of a single filament conductor. Bi-2212 wires can be wound or cabled into almost any type of superconducting magnet and will be especially valuable for very high field NMR magnets beyond the present 1 GHz proton resonance limit of Nb3Sn technology. This demonstration that grain boundary limits to high Jc can be practically overcome suggests the huge value of a renewed focus on grain boundary properties in non-ideal geometries, especially with the goal of translating the lessons of this Bi-2212 conductor into fabrication of multifilament round wire REBCO or Fe-based superconductors.

With respect to the standard sintering technique, it produces much more homogeneous and denser samples, characterized by large and well interconnected grains. The resulting samples exhibit optimal critical temperature values, sharp resistive and magnetic transitions, large magnetic hysteresis loops and high upper critical fields are observed. Interestingly, the global critical current density is much enhanced as compared to the values reported in literature for bulk samples of the same 11 family, reaching about 103 A/cm2 at zero field at 4.2 K as assessed by magnetic, transport and magneto-optical techniques. Even more importantly, its field dependence turns out to be very weak, such that at μ_{0}H = 7 T it is suppressed only by a factor \sim2.

However, thin-film bicrystals of Co-doped Ba-122 clearly exhibit weak link behavior for [001] tilt misorientations of more than about 5 degrees, suggesting that textured substrates would be needed for applications, as in the cuprates. Here we present a contrary and very much more positive result in which untextured polycrystalline (Ba0.6K0.4)Fe2As2 bulks and round wires with high grain boundary density have transport critical current densities well over 0.1 MAcm-2 (SF, 4.2 K), more than 10 times higher than that of any other ferropnictide wire. The enhanced grain connectivity is ascribed to their much improved phase purity and to the enhanced vortex stiffness of this low-anisotropy compound (Gamma ~ 1-2) compared to YBa2Cu3O7-x (Gamma ~ 5).

The anisotropic irreversibility field B$_{Irr}$ of two $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ thin films doped with additional rare earth (RE)=(Gd,Y) and Zr and containing strong correlated pins (splayed BaZrO$_{3}$ nanorods, and $RE_2O_3$ nanoprecipitates), has been measured over a very broad range up to 45T at temperatures 56 K<T<$T_c$. We found that the experimental angular dependence of $B_{Irr}(θ)$ does not follow the mass anisotropy scaling $B_{Irr}(θ)=B_{Irr}(0)(cos^2θ+γ^{-2}sin^2θ)^{-1/2}$, where $γ=(m_c/m_{ab})^{1/2}=5-6$ for the RE-doped $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-x}$ (REBCO) crystals, m$_{ab}$ and m$_{c}$ are the effective masses along the ab plane and the c-axis, respectively, and $θ$ is the angle between B and the c-axis. For B parallel to the ab-planes and to the c-axis correlated pinning strongly enhances B$_{Irr}$, while at intermediate angles, $B_{Irr}(θ)$ follows the scaling behavior $B_{Irr}(θ)\propto(cos^2θ+γ_{RP}^2sin^2θ)^{1/2}$ with the effective anisotropy factor $γ_{RP}\approx3$ significantly smaller than the mass anisotropy would suggest. In spite of the strong effects of c-axis BaZrO$_{3}$ nanorods, we found even greater enhancements of B$_{Irr}$ for fields along the ab-planes than for fields parallel to the c-axis, as well as different temperature dependences of the correlated pinning contributions to B$_{Irr}$ for B//ab and B//c. Our results show that the dense and strong pins, which can now be incorporated into REBCO thin films in a controlled way, exert major and diverse effects on the measured vortex pinning anisotropy and the irreversibility field over wide ranges of B and T. In particular, we show that the relative contribution of correlated pinning to B$_{Irr}$ for B//c increases as the temperature increases due to the suppression of thermal fluctuations of vortices by splayed distribution of BaZrO$_{3}$ nanorods.

We prepared polycrystalline SmFeAsO1-xFx (Sm1111) bulk samples by sintering and hot isostatic pressing (HIP) in order to study the effects of phase purity and relative density on the intergranular current density. Sintered and HIPped Sm1111 samples are denser with fewer impurity phases, such as SmOF and the grain boundary wetting phase, FeAs. We found quite complex magnetization behavior due to variations of both the inter and intragranular current densities. Removing porosity and reducing second phase content enhanced the intergranular current density, but HIP** reduced Tc and the intragranular current density, due to loss of fluorine and reduction of Tc. We believe that the HIPped samples are amongst the purest polycrystalline 1111 samples yet made. However, their intergranular current densities are still small, providing further evidence that polycrystalline pnictides, like polycrystalline cuprates, are intrinsically granular.

Less than two years after the discovery of high temperature superconductivity in oxypnictide LaFeAs(O,F) several families of superconductors based on Fe layers (1111, 122, 11, 111) are available. They share several characteristics with cuprate superconductors that compromise easy applications, such as the layered structure, the small coherence length, and unconventional pairing, On the other hand the Fe-based superconductors have metallic parent compounds, and their electronic anisotropy is generally smaller and does not strongly depend on the level of do**, the supposed order parameter symmetry is s wave, thus in principle not so detrimental to current transmission across grain boundaries. From the application point of view, the main efforts are still devoted to investigate the superconducting properties, to distinguish intrinsic from extrinsic behaviours and to compare the different families in order to identify which one is the fittest for the quest for better and more practical superconductors. The 1111 family shows the highest Tc, huge but also the most anisotropic upper critical field and in-field, fan-shaped resistive transitions reminiscent of those of cuprates, while the 122 family is much less anisotropic with sharper resistive transitions as in low temperature superconductors, but with about half the Tc of the 1111 compounds. An overview of the main superconducting properties relevant to applications will be presented. Upper critical field, electronic anisotropy parameter, intragranular and intergranular critical current density will be discussed and compared, where possible, across the Fe-based superconductor families.

We report a direct current transport study of the local intergrain connections in a polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 (Sm1111) bulk, for which we earlier estimated significant intergranular critical current density Jc. Our combined low temperature laser scanning microscopy (LTLSM) and scanning electron microscopy observations revealed only few grain-to-grain transport current paths, most of which switched off when a magnetic field was applied. These regions typically occur where current crosses Fe-As, which is a normal-metal wetting-phase that surrounds Sm1111 grains, producing a dense array of superconducting-normal-superconducting contacts. Our study points out the need to reduce the amount of grain boundary-wetting Fe-As phase, as well as the crack density within pnictide grains, as these defects produce a multiply connected current-blocking network.

Our results suggest that weak-linked GBs are characteristic of both cuprates and pnictides because of competing orders, low carrier density, and unconventional pairing symmetry.

In order to understand why the inter- and intra-granular current densities of polycrystalline superconducting oxypnictides differ by three orders of magnitude, we have conducted combined magneto-optical and microstructural examinations of representative randomly oriented polycrystalline Nd and Sm single-layer oxypnictides. Magneto optical images show that the highest Jc values are observed within single grains oriented with their c axes perpendicular to the observation plane, implying that the intragranular current is anisotropic. The much lower intergranular Jc is at least partially due to many extrinsic factors, because cracks and a ubiquitous wetting As-Fe phase are found at many grain boundaries. However, some grain boundaries are structurally clean under high resolution transmission electron microscopy examination. Because the whole-sample global Jc(5K) values of the two samples examined are 1000-4000 A/cm2, some 10-40 times that found in random, polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-x, it appears that the dominant obstruction to intergranular current flow of many present samples is extrinsic, though some intrinsic limitation of current flow across grain boundaries cannot yet be ruled out.

Early studies have found quasi-reversible magnetization curves in polycrystalline bulk rare-earth iron oxypnictides that suggest either wide-spread obstacles to intergranular current or very weak vortex pinning. In the present study of polycrystalline samarium and neodymium rare-earth iron oxypnictide samples made by high pressure synthesis, the hysteretic magnetization is significantly enhanced. Magneto optical imaging and study of the field dependence of the remanent magnetization as a function of particle size both show that global currents over the whole sample do exist but that the intergranular and intragranular current densities have distinctively different temperature dependences and differ in magnitude by about 1000. Assuming that the highest current density loops are restricted to circulation only within grains leads to values of ~5 MA/cm2 at 5 K and self field, while whole-sample current densities, though two orders of magnitude lower are 1000-10000 A/cm2, some two orders of magnitude higher than in random polycrystalline cuprates. We cannot yet be certain whether this large difference in global and intragrain current density is intrinsic to the oxypnictides or due to extrinsic barriers to current flow, because the samples contain significant second phase, some of which wets the grain boundaries and produces evidences of SNS proximity effect in the whole sample critical current.

The new rare-earth arsenate superconductors are layered, low carrier density compounds with many similarities to the high-Tc cuprates. An important question is whether they also exhibit weak-coupling across randomly oriented grain-boundaries. In this work we show considerable evidence for such weak-coupling by study of the dependence of magnetization in bulk and powdered samples. Bulk sample magnetization curves show very little hysteresis while remanent magnetization shows almost no sample size dependence, even after powdering. We conclude that these samples exhibit substantial electromagnetic granularity on a scale approximating the grain size, though we cannot yet determine whether this is intrinsic or extrinsic.
