This range of do**s spans much of the phase diagram relevant to high temperature cuprate superconductivity, ranging from insulating, three dimensional (3D) commensurate long range antiferromagnetic order, for x $\leq$ 0.02, to two dimensional (2D) incommensurate antiferromagnetism co-existing with superconductivity for x $\geq$ 0.05. Previous work on lightly doped LBCO with x = 0.035 showed a clear resonant enhancement of the inelastic scattering coincident with the low energy crossings of the highly dispersive spin excitations and quasi-2D optic phonons. The present work extends these measurements across the phase diagram and shows this enhancement to be a common feature to this family of layered quantum magnets. Furthermore we show that the low temperature, low energy magnetic spectral weight is substantially larger for samples with non-superconducting ground states relative to any of the samples with superconducting ground states. Spin gaps, suppression of low energy magnetic spectral weight as a function of decreasing temperature, are observed in both superconducting LBCO and LSCO samples, consistent with previous observations for superconducting LSCO.

The entanglement entropy for a quantum critical system across a boundary with a corner exhibits a sub-leading logarithmic scaling term with a scale-invariant coefficient. Using a Numerical Linked Cluster Expansion, we calculate this universal quantity for a square-lattice bilayer Heisenberg model at its quantum critical point. We find, for this 2+1 dimensional O(3) universality class, that it is thrice the value calculated previously for the Ising universality class. This relation gives substantial evidence that this coefficient provides a measure of the number of degrees of freedom of the theory, analogous to the central charge in a 1+1 dimensional conformal field theory.

We present neutron scattering measurements on single crystals of lightly doped $La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$, with $0 \leq x \leq? 0.035$. These reveal the evolution of the magnetism in this prototypical doped Mott insulator from a three dimensional (3D) commensurate (C) antiferromagnetic ground state, which orders at a relatively high TN, to a two dimensional (2D) incommensurate (IC) ground state with finite ranged static correlations, which appear below a relatively low effective TN. At low temperatures, the 2D IC magnetism co-exists with the 3D C magnetism for do** concentrations as low as ? 0.0125. We find no signal of a 3D C magnetic ground state by x $\sim$? 0.025, consistent with the upper limit of x $\sim$? 0.02 observed in the sister family of doped Mott insulators, $La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4}$. The 2D IC ground states observed for $0.0125 \leq x \leq 0.035$ are diagonal, and are rotated by 45 degrees within the orthorhombic basal plane compared with those previously reported for samples with superconducting ground states: $La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4}$, with $0.05 \leq? x \leq? 0.095. We construct a phase diagram based solely on magnetic order parameter measurements, which displays much of the complexity of standard high temperature superconductivity phase diagrams discussed in the literature. Analysis of high energy-resolution inelastic neutron scattering at moderately low temperatures shows a progressive depletion of the very low energy dynamic magnetic susceptibility as x increases from 0.0125 to 0.035. This low energy, dynamic susceptibility falls off? with increasing temperature on a scale much higher than the effective 2D IC TN appropriate to these materials. Appreciable dynamic 2D IC magnetic fluctuations inhabit much of the "pseudogap" regime of the phase diagram.

We develop a method to calculate the bipartite entanglement entropy of quantum models, in the thermodynamic limit, using a Numerical Linked Cluster Expansion (NLCE) involving only rectangular clusters. It is based on exact diagonalization of all n x m rectangular clusters at the interface between entangled subsystems A and B. We use it to obtain the Renyi entanglement entropy of the two-dimensional transverse field Ising model, for arbitrary real Renyi index alpha. Extrapolating these results as a function of the order of the calculation, we obtain universal pieces of the entanglement entropy associated with lines and corners at the quantum critical point. They show NLCE to be one of the few methods capable of accurately calculating universal properties of arbitrary Renyi entropies at higher dimensional critical points.

Through simulations on several classical models, we demonstrate that the Renyi Mutual Information can detect finite-temperature critical points, and even identify their universality class, without knowledge of an order parameter or other thermodynamic estimators. Remarkably, in addition to critical points mediated by symmetry breaking, the Renyi Mutual Information is able to detect topological vortex-unbinding transitions, as we explicitly demonstrate on simulations of the XY model.

We numerically determine subleading scaling terms in the ground-state entanglement entropy of several two-dimensional (2D) gapless systems, including a Heisenberg model with Néel order, a free Dirac fermion in the π-flux phase, and the nearest-neighbor resonating-valence-bond wavefunction. For these models, we show that the entanglement entropy between cylindrical regions of length x and L - x, extending around a torus of length L, depends upon the dimensionless ratio x/L. This can be well-approximated on finite-size lattices by a function ln(sin(πx/L)), akin to the familiar chord-length dependence in one dimension. We provide evidence, however, that the precise form of this bulk-dependent contribution is a more general function in the 2D thermodynamic limit.

We compute the bipartite entanglement properties of the spin-half square-lattice Heisenberg model by a variety of numerical techniques that include valence bond quantum Monte Carlo (QMC), stochastic series expansion QMC, high temperature series expansions and zero temperature coupling constant expansions around the Ising limit. We find that the area law is always satisfied, but in addition to the entanglement entropy per unit boundary length, there are other terms that depend logarithmically on the subregion size, arising from broken symmetry in the bulk and from the existence of corners at the boundary. We find that the numerical results are anomalous in several ways. First, the bulk term arising from broken symmetry deviates from an exact calculation that can be done for a mean-field Neel state. Second, the corner logs do not agree with the known results for non-interacting Boson modes. And, third, even the finite temperature mutual information shows an anomalous behavior as T goes to zero, suggesting that T->0 and L->infinity limits do not commute. These calculations show that entanglement entropy demonstrates a very rich behavior in d>1, which deserves further attention.

We find that for n>1, the critical behavior is manifest at two temperatures T_c and n*T_c. For the XXZ model with Ising anisotropy, the coefficient of the area-law has a t*ln(t) singularity, whereas the subleading correction from corners has a logarithmic divergence, with a coefficient related to the exact results of Cardy and Peschel. For T<n*T_c there is a constant term associated with broken symmetries that jumps at both T_c and n*T_c, which can be understood in terms of a scaling function analogous to the boundary entropy of Affleck and Ludwig.

An improved estimator involving the ratio of {\it Swap} operators for different subregions enables simulations to converge the entropy in a time polynomial in the system size. We demonstrate convergence of the Renyi entropy to exact results for a Heisenberg chain. Finally, we calculate the scaling of the Renyi entropy in the two-dimensional Heisenberg model and confirm that the Néel groundstate obeys the expected area law for systems up to linear size L=28.

For one-dimensional chains we show that the valence bond entropy can be either less or greater than the von Neumann entropy, hence it cannot provide a bound on the latter. On ladder geometries, simulations with up to seven legs are sufficient to indicate that the von Neumann entropy in two dimensions obeys an area law, even though the valence bond entanglement entropy has a multiplicative logarithmic correction.

Static incommensurate magnetic order is observed in the La_{2-x}Ba_{x}CuO_{4} (x=0.05 and 0.025) compounds with ordering wavevectors which are rotated by 45 degree about the commensurate (0.5,0.5,0) position, with respect to that in the superconducting x=0.08 material. These spin modulations are one dimensional in the x=0.05 and 0.025 samples, with ordering wavevectors lying along the orthorhombic b* direction. Such a rotation in the orientation of the static spin ordering as a function of increasing Ba do**, from diagonal to collinear, is roughly coincident with the transition from an insulating to a superconducting ground state and is similar to that observed in the related La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} system. This phenomenon is therefore a generic property of underdoped La-214 cuprates.
