To consider variational structures of area-preserving maps, we define a special class of area-preserving maps called monotone twist maps. Variational structures determined from twist maps can be used for constructing characteristic trajectories of twist maps. Our goal is to prove the existence of an infinite transition orbit, which represents an oscillating orbit between fixed points infinite times, through minimizing methods.

Periodic solutions of the planar $N$-body problem determine braids through the trajectory of $N$ bodies. Braid types can be used to classify periodic solutions. According to the Nielsen-Thurston classification of surface automorphisms, braids fall into three types: periodic, reducible and pseudo-Anosov. To a braid of pseudo-Anosov type, there is an associated stretch factor greater than 1, and this is a conjugacy invariant of braids. In 2006, the third author discovered a family of multiple choreographic solutions of the planar $2n$-body problem. We prove that braids obtained from the solutions in the family are of pseudo-Anosov type, and their stretch factors are expressed in metallic ratios. New numerical periodic solutions of the planar $2n$-body problem are also provided.

We performed small-angle X-ray scattering measurements of liquid Te using a synchrotron radiation facility and observed the maximum scattering intensity near 620 K in the supercooled region (melting temperature 723 K). This result is an experimental observation of the ridge line of the critical density fluctuation associated with the liquid-liquid phase transition that is argued to exist in the supercooled region and verifies the existence of the transition. Similar results have been reported for supercooled liquid water, demonstrating the universality of the liquid-liquid transition concept (or inhomogeneous model) in explaining the thermodynamics of these "anomalous liquids". Moreover, as a more essential issue, it has been demonstrated that liquids can be inhomogeneous at mesoscopic scales, even in their thermal equilibrium state. This will contribute to a greater understanding of the physics of liquids, including glass-forming liquids.

Liquid polymorphism is an intriguing phenomenon which has been found in a few single-component systems, the most famous being water. By supercooling liquid Te to more than 130 K below its melting point and performing simultaneous small-angle and wide-angle X-ray scattering measurements, we observe clear maxima in its thermodynamic response functions around 615 K, suggesting the possible existence of liquid polymorphism. A close look at the underlying structural evolution shows the development of intermediate-range order upon cooling, most strongly around the thermodynamic maxima, which we attribute to bond-orientational ordering. The striking similarities between our results and those of water, despite the lack of hydrogen-bonding and tetrahedrality in tellurium, indicate that water-like anomalies may be a general phenomenon among liquid systems with competing bond- and density-ordering.

We report a new experimental approach for observing mesoscopic fluctuations underlying the thermodynamic anomalies of ambient liquid water. In this approach, two sound velocity measurements with different frequencies, namely inelastic X-ray scattering (IXS) in THz band and ultrasonic (US) in MHz band, are required to investigate the relaxation phenomenon with the characteristic frequency between the two aforementioned frequencies. We performed IXS measurements to obtain the IXS sound velocity of liquid water from the ambient conditions to the supercritical region of liquid-gas phase transition (LGT) and compared the results with the US sound velocity in the literature. We found that the ratio of the two sound velocities, Sf, which corresponds to the relaxation intensity, exhibits a simple but significant change. Two distinct rises were observed in the high-temperature and low-temperature regions, implying that two relaxation phenomena exist: in the high-temperature region, a peak was observed near the LGT critical ridge line, which was linked with changes in the density fluctuation and isochoric and isobaric specific heat capacities; in the low-temperature region, Sf increased toward the low-temperature region, which was linked with the change in the isochoric heat capacity. We concluded that these two relaxation phenomena are originated from critical fluctuations of liquid-gas phase transition (LGT) and liquid-liquid phase transition, respectively. The linkage between Sf and isochoric heat capacity in the low-temperature region proves that the relaxation is the cause of the well-known heat capacity anomaly of ambient liquid water. In this study, both LGT and LLT critical fluctuations were observed, and the relationship between thermodynamics and the critical fluctuations was comprehensively discussed.

The measured spectra are in good agreement, in both frequency and linewidth, with {\it ab initio} molecular dynamics (MD) simulations but not classical MD simulations. The observation of these modes at small $Q$ and a good agreement with the simulation permits clear identification of these as collective optic modes with well defined phasing between different ionic motions.

Noise is usually a hindrance to signal detection. As stressed by Landauer, however, noise can be an invaluable signal that reveals kinetics of charge particles. Understanding local non-equilibrium electron kinetics at nano-scale is of decisive importance for the development of miniaturized electronic devices, optical nano-devices, and heat management devices. In non-equilibrium conditions electrons cause current fluctuation (excess noise) that contains fingerprint-like information about the electron kinetics. A crucial challenge is hence a local detection of excess noise and its real-space map**. However, the challenge has not been tackled in existing noise measurements because the noise studied was the spatially integrated one. Here we report the experiment in which the excess noise at ultra-high-frequency(21.3THz), generated on GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well (QW) devices with a nano-scale constriction, is locally detected and mapped for the first time. We use a sharp tungsten tip as a movable, contact-free and noninvasive probe of the local noise, and achieved nano-scale spatial resolution (~50nm). Local profile of electron heating and hot-electron kinetics at nano-scales are thereby visualized for the first time, disclosing remarkable non-local nature of the transport, stemming from the velocity overshoot and the intervalley hot electron transfer. While we demonstrate the usefulness of our experimental method by applying to mesoscopic conductors, we emphasize that the method is applicable to a variety of different materials beyond the conductor, and term our instrument a scanning noise microscope (SNoiM):In general non-equilibrium current fluctuations are generated in any materials including dielectrics, metals and molecular systems. The fluctuations, in turn, excite fluctuating electric and magnetic evanescent fields on the material surface, which can be detected and imaged by our SNoiM.

Intense electromagnetic evanescent fields are thermally excited in near fields on material surfaces (at distances smaller than the wavelength of peak thermal radiation). The property of the fields is of strong interest for it is material-specific and is important for understanding a variety of surface-related effects, such as friction forces, Casimir forces, near-field heat transfer, and surface-coupled molecular dynamics. On metal surfaces, relevance of surface plasmon polaritons (SPlPs), coupled to collective motion of conduction electrons, has attracted strong interest, but has not been explicitly clarified up to the present time. Here, using a passive terahertz (THz) near-field microscope with unprecedented high sensitivity, we unveil detailed nature of thermally generated evanescent fields (wavelength:lamda0~14.5micron) on metals at room temperature. Our experimental results unambiguously indicate that the thermal waves are short-wavelength fluctuating electromagnetic fields, from which relevance of SPlPs is ruled out.

A master formula of transformation formulas for bilinear sums of basic hypergeometric series is proposed. It is obtained from the author's previous results on a transformation formula for Milne's multivariate generalization of basic hypergeometric series of type $A$ with different dimensions and it can be considered as a generalization of Whipple-Sears transformation formula for terminating balanced ${}_4 φ_3$ series. As an application of the master formula, one variable cases of some transformation formulas for bilinear sums of basic hypergeometric series are given as examples. The bilinear transformation formulas seem to be new in the literature even in one variable case.
