Exciton fine structure splitting in semiconductors reflects the underlying symmetry of the crystal and quantum confinement. Since the latter factor strongly enhances the exchange interaction, most work has focused on nanostructures. Here, we report on the first observation of the bright exciton fine structure splitting in a bulk semiconductor crystal, where the impact of quantum confinement can be specifically excluded, giving access to the intrinsic properties of the material. Detailed investigation of the exciton photoluminescence and reflection spectra of a bulk methylammonium lead tribromide single crystal reveals a zero magnetic field splitting as large as $\sim 200μ$eV. This result provides an important starting point for the discussion of the origin of the large bright exciton fine structure observed in perovskite nanocrystals.

We present a systematic investigation of the electronic properties of bulk and few layer ReS$_2$ van der Waals crystals using low temperature optical spectroscopy. Weak photoluminescence emission is observed from two non-degenerate band edge excitonic transitions separated by $\sim$ 20 meV. The comparable emission intensity of both excitonic transitions is incompatible with a fully thermalized (Boltzmann) distribution of excitons, indicating the hot nature of the emission. While DFT calculations predict bilayer ReS$_2$ to have a direct fundamental band gap, our optical data suggests that the fundamental gap is indirect in all cases.

Degenerate extrema in the energy dispersion of charge carriers in solids, also referred to as valleys, can be regarded as a binary quantum degree of freedom, which can potentially be used to implement valleytronic concepts in van der Waals heterostructures based on transition metal dichalcogenides. Using magneto-photoluminescence spectroscopy, we achieve a deeper insight into the valley polarization and depolarization mechanisms of interlayer excitons formed across a MoS$_2$/MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ heterostructure. We account for the non-trivial behavior of the valley polarization as a function of the magnetic field by considering the interplay between exchange interaction and phonon mediated intervalley scattering in a system consisting of Zeeman-split energy levels. Our results represent a crucial step towards the understanding of the properties of interlayer excitons, with strong implications for the implementation of atomically thin valleytronic devices.

Transition metal dichalcogenides hold promise for applications in novel optoelectronic devices. There is therefore a need for materials that can be obtained in large quantities and with well understood optical properties. In this report, we present a thorough photoluminescence (PL) investigations of monolayer tungsten disulphide obtained via liquid phase exfoliation. As shown by microscopy studies, the exfoliated nanosheets have dimensions of tens of nanometers and thickness of 2.5 monolayers on average. The monolayer content is about 20%. Our studies show that at low temperature the photoluminescence is dominated by excitons localized on nanosheet edges. As a consequence, the PL is strongly sensitive to environment and exhibits an enhanced splitting in magnetic field. As the temperature is increased, the excitons are thermally excited out of the defect states and the dominant transition is that of the negatively charged exciton. Furthermore, upon excitation with a circularly polarized light, the PL retains a degree of polarization reaching 50% and inherited from the valley polarized photoexcited excitons. The studies of PL dynamics reveal that the PL lifetime is on the order of 10 ps, probably limited by non-radiative processes. Our results underline the potential of liquid exfoliated TMD monolayers in large scale optoelectronic devices.

We investigate the impact of the encapsulation with hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) on the Raman spectrum of few layer black phosphorus. The encapsulation results in a significant reduction of the line width of the Raman modes of black phosphorus, due to a reduced phonon scattering rate. We observe a so far elusive peak in the Raman spectra $\sim$4cm$^{-1}$ above the A$_{\text{g}}^1$ mode in trilayer and thicker flakes, which had not been observed experimentally. The newly observed mode originates from the strong black phosphorus inter-layer interaction, which induces a hardening of the surface atoms vibration with respect to the corresponding modes of the inner layers. The observation of this mode suggests a significant impact of h-BN encapsulation on the properties of black phosphorus and can serve as an indicator of the quality of its surface.

Stacking atomic monolayers of semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has emerged as an effective way to engineer their properties. In principle, the staggered band alignment of TMD heterostructures should result in the formation of inter-layer excitons with long lifetimes and robust valley polarization. However, these features have been observed simultaneously only in MoSe$_2$/WSe$_2$ heterostructures. Here we report on the observation of long lived inter-layer exciton emission in a MoS$_2$/MoSe$_2$/MoS$_2$ trilayer van der Waals heterostructure. The inter-layer nature of the observed transition is confirmed by photoluminescence spectroscopy, as well as by analyzing the temporal, excitation power and temperature dependence of the inter-layer emission peak. The observed complex photoluminescence dynamics suggests the presence of quasi-degenerate momentum-direct and momentum-indirect bandgaps. We show that circularly polarized optical pum** results in long lived valley polarization of inter-layer exciton. Intriguingly, the inter-layer exciton photoluminescence has helicity opposite to the excitation. Our results show that through a careful choice of the TMDs forming the van der Waals heterostructure it is possible to control the circular polarization of the inter-layer exciton emission.

The exciton dynamics in monolayer black phosphorus is investigated over a very wide range of photoexcited exciton densities using time resolved photoluminescence. At low excitation densities, the exciton dynamics is successfully described in terms of a double exponential decay. With increasing exciton population, a fast, non-exponential component develops as exciton-exciton annihilation takes over as the dominant recombination mechanism under high excitation conditions. Our results identify an upper limit for the injection density, after which exciton-exciton annihilation reduces the quantum yield, which will significantly impact the performance of light emitting devices based on single layer black phosphorus.

The extracted values of the valley g-factors for both A- and B-exciton were found be similar with $g_v \simeq -4.5$. The samples are expected to be strained due to the CVD growth on sapphire at high temperature ($700^\circ$C). However, the estimated strain, which is maximum at low temperature, is only $\simeq 0.2\%$. Theoretical considerations suggest that the strain is too small to significantly influence the electronic properties. This is confirmed by the measured value of valley g-factor, and the measured temperature dependence of the band gap, which are almost identical for CVD and mechanically exfoliated MoS$_2$.

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides offer the possibility of optical control of the valley degree of freedom. In order to asses the potential of these materials in applications, detailed knowledge of the valley dynamics is essential. In this work, we apply low temperature time-resolved photoluminescence (PL) measurements to investigate exciton valley relaxation dynamics and, in particular, its behavior under strong excitation. At the lowest excitation powers the inter valley scattering time is $\simeq 50$ ps, but shortens by more than a factor of two at the highest powers. We attribute this acceleration to either heating of the exciton system or the presence of a dense exciton gas, which could influence the exciton valley properties. Furthermore, we analyze the PL dynamics of excitons and trions. We find that the PL decays for all peaks are bi-exponential and approximately independent of the excitation power. We attribute the short decay to radiative recombination and escape to a reservoir of dark states. The long decay is ascribed to a transfer of excitons back from the reservoir. For the first time, we evaluate the exciton PL decay time of $\simeq$ 10 ps. The latter process is valley-conserving and occurs on a timescale of $\simeq$ 50 ps.

We achieve this by using materials with a different lattice constant for the growth of the outer and inner barriers. We monitor the resulting dot morphology with transmission electron microscopy studies and correlate the results with ensemble quantum dot photoluminescence. Furthermore, we embed the double quantum dots into diode structures and study photoluminescence as a function of bias voltage. We show that in properly engineered structures, it is possible to achieve a resonance of the hole states by tuning the energy levels with electric field. At the resonance, we observe signatures of a formation of a molecular state, hybridized over the two dots.

We present photoluminescence studies of CdTe and CdMnTe quantum dots grown in two adjacent layers. We show that when the dots are 8 nm apart, their magnetooptical properties - Zeeman shifts and transition linewidths - are analogous to those of individual CdTe or CdMnTe dots. When the dots are grown closer, at a distance of 4 nm, it becomes possible to tune the electron states to resonance and obtain a formation of a molecular state hybridized over the two dots. As a result of the resonant enhancement of the electron-Mn ion exchange interaction, spectroscopic signatures specific to spin-dependent inter-dot coupling appear. Namely, an anomalous increase of the Zeeman shift and a resonant increase in the transition linewidth are observed. A simple model calculation allows us to quantitatively reproduce the experimental results.

We present an experimental study of electron-electron exchange interaction in self-assembled CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots based on the photoluminescence measurements. The character and strength of this interaction are obtained by simultaneous observation of various recombination channels of a doubly negatively charged exciton, including previously unrecognized emission lines related to the electron-singlet configuration in the final state. A typical value of the electron singlet-triplet splitting, which corresponds to the exchange integral of electron-electron interaction, has been determined as 20.4 meV with a spread of 1.4 meV across the wide population of quantum dots. We also evidence an unexpected decrease of energy difference between the singlet and triplet states under a magnetic field in Faraday geometry.

We present a comprehensive experimental and theoretical studies of photoluminescence of single CdMnTe quantum dots with Mn content x ranging from 0.01 to 0.2. We distinguish three stages of the equilibration of the exciton-Mn ion spin system and show that the intermediate stage, in which the exciton spin is relaxed, while the total equilibrium is not attained, gives rise to a specific asymmetric shape of the photoluminescence spectrum. From an excellent agreement between the measured and calculated spectra we are able to evaluate the exciton localization volume, number of paramagnetic Mn ions, and their temperature for each particular dot. We discuss the values of these parameters and compare them with results of other experiments. Furthermore, we analyze the dependence of average Zeeman shifts and transition linewidths on the Mn content and point out specific processes, which control these values at particular Mn concentrations.

We demonstrate evidence for a radiative recombination channel of dark excitons in self-assembled quantum dots. This channel is due to a light hole admixture in the excitonic ground state. Its presence was experimentally confirmed by a direct observation of the dark exciton photoluminescence from a cleaved edge of the sample. The polarization resolved measurements revealed that a photon created from the dark exciton recombination is emitted only in the direction perpendicular to the growth axis. Strong correlation between the dark exciton lifetime and the in-plane hole g-factor enabled us to show that the radiative recombination is a dominant decay channel of the dark excitons in CdTe/ZnTe quantum dots.

We present studies on Coulomb interactions in single self-assembled CdTe quantum dots. We use a field effect structure to tune the charge state of the dot and investigate the impact of the charge state on carrier wave functions. The analysis of the quantum confined Stark shifts of four excitonic complexes allows us to conclude that the hole wave function is softer than electron wave function, i. e. it is subject to stronger modifications upon changing of the dot charge state. These conclusions are corroborated by time-resolved photoluminescence studies of recombination lifetimes of different excitonic complexes. We find that the lifetimes are notably shorter than expected for strong confinement and result from a relatively shallow potential in the valence band. This weak confinement facilitates strong hole wave function redistributions. We analyze spectroscopic shifts of the observed excitonic complexes and find the same sequence of transitions for all studied dots. We conclude that the universality of spectroscopic shifts is due to the role of Coulomb correlations stemming from strong configuration mixing in the valence band.

We study the formation dynamics of a spontaneous ferromagnetic order in single self-assembled CdMnTe quantum dots. By measuring time-resolved photoluminescence, we determine the formation times for QDs with Mn ion contents x varying from 0.01 to 0.2. At low x these times are orders of magnitude longer than exciton spin relaxation times evaluated from the decay of photoluminescence circular polarization. This allows us to conclude that the direction of the spontaneous magnetization is determined by a momentary Mn spin fluctuation rather than resulting from an optical orientation. At higher x, the formation times are of the same order of magnitude as found in previous studies on higher dimensional systems. We also find that the exciton spin relaxation accelerates with increasing Mn concentration.

The polarization degree depends strongly on the excitation power, reaching almost 100 % in the stimulated regime. The relaxation time of the polarization is about 1 ns. We argue that all this is an effect of a splitting of the polariton doublet at k=0. We consider different sources for the splitting and conclude that the most likely one is optical birefringence in the mirrors and/or the cavity.

Abstract:
We present a systematic study on the exciton relaxation in high purity AlGaAs epilayers. The time for the excitonic photoluminescence to reach its maximum intensity (t_max) shows a non-monotonic dependence on excitation density which is attributed to a competition between exciton localization and carrier-carrier scattering. A phenomenological four level model fully describes the influence of exciton localization on t_max. This localization effect is enhanced by the increase of the Al content in the alloy and disappears when localization is hindered by rising the lattice temperature above the exciton trap** energy.
