We introduce the concept evolutionary semigroups on path spaces, generalizing the notion of transition semigroups to possibly non-Markovian stochastic processes. We study the basic properties of evolutionary semigroups and, in particular, prove that they always arise as the composition of the shift semigroup and a single operator called the expectation operator of the semigroup. We also prove that the transition semigroup of a Markov process can always be extended to an evolutionary semigroup on the path space whenever the Markov process can be realized with the appropriate path regularity. As first examples of evolutionary semigroups associated to non-Markovian processes, we discuss deterministic evolution equations and stochastic flows driven by Lévy processes. The latter in particular include certain stochastic delay equations.

We provide explicit convergence rates for Chernoff-type approximations of convex monotone semigroups which have the form $S(t)f=\lim_{n\to\infty}I(\frac{t}{n})^n f$ for bounded continuous functions $f$. Under suitable conditions on the one-step operators $I(t)$ regarding the time regularity and consistency of the approximation scheme, we obtain $\|S(t)f-I(\frac{t}{n})^n f\|_\infty\leq cn^{-γ}$ for bounded Lipschitz continuous functions $f$, where $c\geq 0$ and $γ>0$ are determined explicitly. Moreover, the map** $t\mapsto S(t)f$ is Hölder continuous. These results are closely related to monotone approximation schemes for viscosity solutions but are obtained independently by following a recently developed semigroup approach to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations which uniquely characterizes semigroups via their $Γ$-generators. The different approach allows to consider convex rather than sublinear equations and the results can be extended to unbounded functions by modifying the norm with a suitable weight function. Furthermore, up to possibly different consistency errors for the operators $I(t)$, the upper and lower bound for the error between the semigroup and the iterated operators are symmetric. The abstract results are applied to Nisio semigroups and limit theorems for convex expectations.

Based on the convergence of their infinitesimal generators in the mixed topology, we provide a stability result for strongly continuous convex monotone semigroups on spaces of continuous functions. In contrast to previous results, we do not rely on the theory of viscosity solutions but use a recent comparison principle which uniquely determines the semigroup via its $Γ$-generator defined on the Lipschitz set and therefore resembles the classical analogue from the linear case. The framework also allows for discretizations both in time and space and covers a variety of applications. This includes Euler schemes and Yosida-type approximations for upper envelopes of families of linear semigroups, stability results and finite-difference schemes for convex HJB equations, Freidlin-Wentzell-type results and Markov chain approximations for a class of stochastic optimal control problems and continuous-time Markov processes with uncertain transition probabilities.

To investigate the impact of social groups on waiting behaviour of passengers at railway platforms a method to identify social groups through the monitoring of distances between pedestrians and the stability of those distances over time is introduced. The method allows the recognition of groups using trajectories only and thus opens up the possibility of studying crowds in public places without constrains caused by privacy protection issues. Trajectories from a railway platform in Switzerland were used to analyse the waiting behaviour of passengers in dependence of waiting time as well as the size of social groups. The analysis of the trajectories shows that the portion of passengers travelling in groups reaches up to 10\% during the week and increases to 20 \% on the weekends. 60\% of the groups were pairs, larger groups were less frequent. With increasing group size, the mean speed of the members decreases. Individuals and pairs often choose waiting spots at the sides of the stairs and in vicinity of obstacles, while larger groups wait close to the platform entries. The results indicate that passengers choose waiting places according to the following criteria and ranking: shortest ways, direction of the next intended action, undisturbed places and ensured communication. While individual passengers often wait in places where they are undisturbed and do not hinder others, the dominating comfort criterion for groups is to ensure communication. The results regarding space requirements of waiting passengers could be used for different applications. E.g. to enhance the level of service concept assessing the comfort of different types of users, to avoid temporary bottlenecks to improve the boarding and alighting process or to increase the robustness of the performance of railway platforms during peak loads by optimising the pedestrian distribution.

Starting with a family $(I(t))_{t\geq 0}$ of operators, the semigroup is constructed as the limit $S(t)f:=\lim_{n\to\infty}I(\frac{t}{n})^n f$ and is uniquely determined by the time derivative $I'(0)f$ for smooth functions. Moreover, we identity explicit conditions for the generating family $(I(t))_{t\geq 0}$ that are transferred to the semigroup $(S(t))_{t\geq 0}$ and can easily be verified in applications. It turns out that there is a structural connection between Chernoff type approximations for semigroups and LLN and CLT type results for convex expectations including large deviation results as well.

We study semigroups of convex monotone operators on spaces of continuous functions and their behaviour with respect to $Γ$-convergence. In contrast to the linear theory, the domain of the generator is, in general, not invariant under the semigroup. To overcome this issue, we consider different versions of invariant Lipschitz sets which turn out to be suitable domains for weaker notions of the generator. The so-called $Γ$-generator is defined as the time derivative with respect to $Γ$-convergence in the space of upper semicontinuous functions. Under suitable assumptions, we show that the $Γ$-generator uniquely characterizes the semigroup and is determined by its evaluation at smooth functions. Furthermore, we provide Chernoff approximation results for convex monotone semigroups and show that approximation schemes based on the same infinitesimal behaviour lead to the same semigroup. Our results are applied to semigroups related to stochastic optimal control problems in finite and infinite-dimensional settings as well as Wasserstein perturbations of transition semigroups.

In this paper, we deal with a class of time-homogeneous continuous-time Markov processes with transition probabilities bearing a nonparametric uncertainty. The uncertainty is modeled by considering perturbations of the transition probabilities within a proximity in Wasserstein distance. As a limit over progressively finer time periods, on which the level of uncertainty scales proportionally, we obtain a convex semigroup satisfying a nonlinear PDE in a viscosity sense. A remarkable observation is that, in standard situations, the nonlinear transition operators arising from nonparametric uncertainty coincide with the ones related to parametric drift uncertainty. On the level of the generator, the uncertainty is reflected as an additive perturbation in terms of a convex functional of first order derivatives. We additionally provide sensitivity bounds for the convex semigroup relative to the reference model. The results are illustrated with Wasserstein perturbations of Lévy processes, infinite-dimensional Ornstein-Uhlenbeck processes, geometric Brownian motions, and Koopman semigroups.

We provide a semigroup approach to the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation. It turns out that exponential Orlicz hearts are suitable spaces to handle the (quadratic) non-linearity of the Hamiltonian. Based on an abstract extension result for nonlinear semigroups on spaces of continuous functions, we represent the solution of the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation as a strongly continuous convex semigroup on an exponential Orlicz heart. As a result, the solution depends continuously on the initial data. We further determine the symmetric Lipschitz set which is invariant under the semigroup. This automatically yields a priori estimates and regularity in Sobolev spaces. In particular, on the domain restricted to the symmetric Lipschitz set, the generator can be explicitly determined and linked with the viscous Hamilton-Jacobi equation.

In this paper, we introduce a weaker topological form of maxitivity and show that under this assumption the Shilkret integral is still determined by its possibility distribution for functions that are sufficiently regular. Motivated by large deviations theory, we provide a Laplace principle for maxitive integrals and characterize the possibility distribution under certain separation and convexity assumptions. Moreover, we show a maxitive integral representation result for weakly maxitive non-linear expectations. The theoretical results are illustrated by providing large deviations bounds for sequences of capacities, and by deriving a monotone analogue of Cramér's theorem.

The common idea in the present approach is to find conditions on the generating family $(I(t))_{t\ge 0}$, which by iteration can be transferred to the semigroup. The construction relies on the Lipschitz set, which is invariant under iterations and allows to preserve Lipschitz continuity to the limit. Moreover, we provide a verifiable condition which ensures that the infinitesimal generator of the semigroup is given by $\lim_{h\downarrow 0}\tfrac{I(h)x-x}{h}$ whenever this limit exists. The results are illustrated with several examples of nonlinear semigroups such as robustifications and perturbations of linear semigroups.

Typical examples include the space of all bounded uniformly continuous functions and the space of all continuous functions vanishing at infinity. We show that the domain of the classical generator of a convex semigroup is typically not invariant. Therefore, we propose alternative versions for the domain, such as the monotone domain and the Lipschitz set, for which we prove invariance under the semigroup. As a main result, we obtain the uniqueness of the semigroup in terms of an extended version of the generator. The results are illustrated with several examples related to Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equations, including nonlinear versions of the shift semigroup and the heat equation. A max-stable monetary risk measure fulfills a lattice homomorphism property, and satisfies under a suitable tightness condition the Laplace Principle (LP), that is, admits a dual representation with affine convex conjugate. By replacing asymptotic concentration of probability by concentration of risk, we formulate a Large Deviation Principle (LDP) for max-stable monetary risk measures, and show its equivalence to the LP. In particular, the special case of the asymptotic entropic risk measure corresponds to the classical Varadhan-Bryc equivalence between the LDP and LP. We study a variant of the martingale optimal transport problem in a multi-period setting to derive robust price bounds of a financial derivative. On top of marginal and martingale constraints, we introduce a time-homogeneity assumption, which restricts the variability of the forward-looking transitions of the martingale across time. We provide a dual formulation in terms of superhedging and discuss relaxations of the time-homogeneity assumption by adding market frictions. In financial terms, the introduced time-homogeneity corresponds to a time-consistency condition for call prices, given the state of the stock. The time homogeneity assumption leads to improved price bounds as market data from many time points can be incorporated effectively. The approach is illustrated with two numerical examples.

We consider settings in which the distribution of a multivariate random variable is partly ambiguous. We assume the ambiguity lies on the level of the dependence structure, and that the marginal distributions are known. Furthermore, a current best guess for the distribution, called reference measure, is available. We work with the set of distributions that are both close to the given reference measure in a transportation distance (e.g. the Wasserstein distance), and additionally have the correct marginal structure. The goal is to find upper and lower bounds for integrals of interest with respect to distributions in this set. The described problem appears naturally in the context of risk aggregation. When aggregating different risks, the marginal distributions of these risks are known and the task is to quantify their joint effect on a given system. This is typically done by applying a meaningful risk measure to the sum of the individual risks. For this purpose, the stochastic interdependencies between the risks need to be specified. In practice the models of this dependence structure are however subject to relatively high model ambiguity. The contribution of this paper is twofold: Firstly, we derive a dual representation of the considered problem and prove that strong duality holds. Secondly, we propose a generally applicable and computationally feasible method, which relies on neural networks, in order to numerically solve the derived dual problem. The latter method is tested on a number of toy examples, before it is finally applied to perform robust risk aggregation in a real world instance.

The goal of this paper is to define stochastic integrals and to solve stochastic differential equations for typical paths taking values in a possibly infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space without imposing any probabilistic structure. In the spirit of [33, 37] and motivated by the pricing duality result obtained in [4] we introduce an outer measure as a variant of the pathwise minimal superhedging price where agents are allowed to trade not only in $ω$ but also in $\intω\,dω:=ω^2 -\langle ω\rangle$ and where they are allowed to include beliefs in future paths of the price process expressed by a prediction set. We then call a property to hold true on typical paths if the set of paths where the property fails is null with respect to our outer measure. It turns out that adding the second term $ω^2 -\langle ω\rangle$ in the definition of the outer measure enables to directly construct stochastic integrals which are continuous, even for typical paths taking values in an infinite dimensional separable Hilbert space. Moreover, when restricting to continuous paths whose quadratic variation is absolutely continuous with uniformly bounded derivative, a second construction of model-free stochastic integrals for typical paths is presented, which then allows to solve in a model-free way stochastic differential equations for typical paths.

Our approach is based on a general representation result for monotone convex functionals, a functional version of Choquet's capacitability theorem and medial limits. The novelty is that it works under nondominated model uncertainty without any assumptions of time-consistency. As applications, we discuss robust utility maximization problems with moment constraints, Wasserstein constraints and Wasserstein penalties.

For any Borel measurable claim $ξ$ which is bounded from below, the superhedging price coincides with the supremum over all pricing functionals $\mathbb{E}_{\mathbb{Q}}[ξ]$ with respect to martingale measures $\mathbb{Q}$ concentrated on the prediction set $Ξ$. This allows to include beliefs in future paths of the price process expressed by the set $Ξ$, while eliminating all those which are seen as impossible. Moreover, we provide several examples to justify our setup.

Motivated by applications in model-free finance and quantitative risk management, we consider Fréchet classes of multivariate distribution functions where additional information on the joint distribution is assumed, while uncertainty in the marginals is also possible. We derive optimal transport duality results for these Fréchet classes that extend previous results in the related literature. These proofs are based on representation results for increasing convex functionals and the explicit computation of the conjugates. We show that the dual transport problem admits an explicit solution for the function $f=1_B$, where $B$ is a rectangular subset of $\mathbb R^d$, and provide an intuitive geometric interpretation of this result. The improved Fréchet--Hoeffding bounds provide ad-hoc upper bounds for these Fréchet classes. We show that the improved Fréchet--Hoeffding bounds are pointwise sharp for these classes in the presence of uncertainty in the marginals, while a counterexample yields that they are not pointwise sharp in the absence of uncertainty in the marginals, even in dimension 2. The latter result sheds new light on the improved Fréchet--Hoeffding bounds, since Tankov [30] has showed that, under certain conditions, these bounds are sharp in dimension 2.

We provide a model-free pricing-hedging duality in continuous time. For a frictionless market consisting of $d$ risky assets with continuous price trajectories, we show that the purely analytic problem of finding the minimal superhedging price of a path dependent European option has the same value as the purely probabilistic problem of finding the supremum of the expectations of the option over all martingale measures. The superhedging problem is formulated with simple trading strategies, the claim is the limit inferior of continuous functions, which allows for upper and lower semi-continuous claims, and superhedging is required in the pathwise sense on a $σ$-compact sample space of price trajectories. If the sample space is stable under stop**, the probabilistic problem reduces to finding the supremum over all martingale measures with compact support. As an application of the general results we deduce dualities for Vovk's outer measure and semi-static superhedging with finitely many securities.

We prove a general existence result in stochastic optimal control in discrete time where controls take values in conditional metric spaces, and depend on the current state and the information of past decisions through the evolution of a recursively defined forward process. The generality of the problem lies beyond the scope of standard techniques in stochastic control theory such as random sets, normal integrands and measurable selection theory. The main novelty is a formalization in conditional metric space and the use of techniques in conditional analysis. We illustrate the existence result by several examples including wealth-dependent utility maximization under risk constraints with bounded and unbounded wealth-dependent control sets, utility maximization with a measurable dimension, and dynamic risk sharing. Finally, we discuss how conditional analysis relates to random set theory.

This might not always be the case. If the particle temperature or the thermal radiation field differs significantly from the gas temperature (optically thin gases), given approximations overestimate the photophoretic force by an order of magnitude on average with maximum errors up to more than three magnitudes. We therefore developed a new general approximation which on average only differs by 1 % from the true value.

Insolation of the Martian soil leads to a sub-surface overpressure due to thermal creep gas flow. This could support particle entrainment into the atmosphere. Short time shadowing e.g. by the traverse of a larger dust devil would enhance this effect. We find in microgravity experiments that mass ejection rates are increased by a factor of 10 for several seconds if a light source of 12.6 kW/$\rm m^2$ is turned off. Scaled to Mars this implies that self-shadowing of a partially opaque dust devil might lead to a strongly amplified flux of lifted material. We therefore suggest that self-shadowing might be a mechanism on Mars to increase the total dust loading of a dust devil and keep it self-sustained.

In addition to strict super- and subhedging, we also consider relaxed versions which, instead of eliminating the shortfall risk completely, aim to reduce it to an acceptable level. This yields robust price bounds with tighter spreads. As examples we study strict super- and subhedging with general convex transaction costs and trading constraints as well as risk-based hedging with respect to robust versions of the average value at risk and entropic risk measure. Our approach is based on representation results for increasing convex functionals and allows for general financial market structures. We provide extension procedures for nonlinear expectations to the space of all bounded measurable functions. We first discuss a maximal extension for convex expectations which have a representation in terms of finitely additive measures. One of the main results of this paper is an extension procedure for convex expectations which are continuous from above and therefore admit a representation in terms of countably additive measures. This can be seen as a nonlinear version of the Daniell-Stone theorem. From this, we deduce a robust Kolmogorov extension theorem which is then used to extend nonlinear kernels to an infinite dimensional path space. We then apply this theorem to construct nonlinear Markov processes with a given family of nonlinear transition kernels.

In this work we present laboratory measurements on the reduction of the threshold friction velocity necessary for lifting dust if the dust bed is illuminated. Insolation of a porous soil establishes a temperature gradient. At low ambient pressure this gradient leads to thermal creep gas flow within the soil. This flow leads to a sub-surface overpressure which supports lift imposed by wind. The wind tunnel was run with Mojave Mars Simulant and air at 3, 6 and 9 mbar, to cover most of the pressure range at martian surface levels. Our first measurements imply that the insolation of the martian surface can reduce the entrainment threshold velocity between 4 % and 19 % for the conditions sampled with our experiments. An insolation activated soil might therefore provide additional support for aeolian particle transport at low wind speeds.

We prove existence of an optimal trading strategy and relate our existence result to the existence of a maximal subsolution to a controlled decoupled FBSDE. Using BSDE duality, we show that the utility maximization problem can be seen as a robust control problem admitting a saddle point if the generator of the BSDE additionally satisfies a specific growth condition. We consider a market model that consists of financial investors and producers of a commodity. Producers optionally store some production for future sale and go short on forward contracts to hedge the uncertainty of the future commodity price. Financial investors take positions in these contracts in order to diversify their portfolios. The spot and forward equilibrium commodity prices are endogenously derived as the outcome of the interaction between producers and investors. Assuming that both are utility maximizers, we first prove the existence of an equilibrium in an abstract setting. Then, in a framework where the consumers' demand and the exogenously priced financial market are correlated, we provide semi-explicit expressions for the equilibrium prices and analyze their dependence on the model parameters. The model can explain why increased investors' participation in forward commodity markets and higher correlation between the commodity and the stock market could result in higher spot prices and lower forward premia.

In optically thin parts of protoplanetary disks photophoresis is a significant force not just for dust grains, but also for macroscopic bodies. The absolute strength on the supposedly highly porous objects is not known in detail as yet. We set up a low pressure torsion balance and studied photophoretic forces. We investigated the dependence on plate dimensions and on ambient pressure and considered the influence of channels through the plates. As samples for full (no channel) plates we used tissue with 2mm thickness and circular shape with diameters of 10mm, 30mm and 50mm. The influence of channels was probed on rectangular-shaped circuit boards of 35mm x 35mm area and 1.5mm thickness. The number of channels was 169 and 352. At low pressure, the absolute photophoretic force is proportional to the cross section of the plates. At high pressure, gas flow through the channels enhances the photophoretic force. The pressure dependence of the radiative force can (formally) be calculated by photophoresis on particles with a characteristic length. We derived two characteristic length scales l depending on the plate radius r_1, the channel radius r_2, and the thickness of the plate which equals the length of the channel d as l=r^{0.35} x d^{0.65}. The highest force is found at a pressure p_max = 15 x l^{-1}Pa mm. In total, the photophoretic force on a plate with channels can be well described by a superposition of the two components: photophoresis due to the overall size and cross section of the plate and photophoresis due to the channels, both with their characteristic pressure dependencies. We applied these results to the transport of large solids in protoplanetary disks and found that the influence of porosity on the photophoretic force can reverse the inward drift of large solids, for instance meter-sized bodies, and push them outward within the optically thin parts of the disk.

Abstract:
The classical Brouwer fixed point theorem states that in R^d every continuous function from a convex, compact set on itself has a fixed point. For an arbitrary probability space, let L^0 = L^0 (Ω, A,P) be the set of random variables. We consider (L^0)^d as an L^0-module and show that local, sequentially continuous functions on closed and bounded subsets have a fixed point which is measurable by co…

The classical Brouwer fixed point theorem states that in R^d every continuous function from a convex, compact set on itself has a fixed point. For an arbitrary probability space, let L^0 = L^0 (Ω, A,P) be the set of random variables. We consider (L^0)^d as an L^0-module and show that local, sequentially continuous functions on closed and bounded subsets have a fixed point which is measurable by construction.
