The dual-channel multi-mode 850 nm optical Miniature Transmitter (MTx) is developed for data transmission of the ATLAS LAr calorimeter readout at LHC. The MTx's are exposed to the radiation field of proton-proton collisions, therefore, the tolerance in Total Ionizing Dose (TID) is required. The TID effects in the MTx are investigated with X-rays and Co-60 gamma-rays for the active components of VCSEL diodes and the customized Link-on-Chip laser driver (LOCld) developed in 0.25 um Silicon-on-Sapphire CMOS technology. The irradiation tests were conducted at various dose rates. The responses to TID are observed with degradation of laser currents at initial dose of 10 to 100 Gy(SiO2), and partial recovery with additional TID to a stable output about 90 % of the original. The optical eye diagrams of irradiated samples show slightly increased jittering, and are suitable for the ATLAS requirement of 5 Gbps applications.

Recent quasi-2D systems with judicious exploitation of the atomic monolayer or few-layer architecture exhibit unprecedented physical properties that challenge the conventional wisdom on the condensed matter physics. Here we show that the infinite layer SrCuO2 (SCO), a topical cuprate Mott insulator in the bulk form, can manifest an unexpected metallic state in the quasi-2D limit when SCO is grown on TiO2-terminated SrTiO3 (STO) substrates. Hard x-ray core-level photoemission spectra demonstrate a definitive Fermi level that resembles the hole doped metal. Soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy also reveals features analogous to those of a hole doped Mott insulator. Based on these results, we conclude that the hole do** does not occur at the interfaces between SCO and STO; instead, it comes from the transient layers between the chain type and the planar type structures within the SCO slab. The present work reveals a novel metallic state in the infinite layer SCO and invites further examination to elucidate the spatial extent of this state.

Modeling and simulating a power distribution network (PDN) for printed circuit boards (PCBs) with irregular board shapes and multi-layer stackup is computationally inefficient using full-wave simulations. This paper presents a new concept of using deep learning for PDN impedance prediction. A boundary element method (BEM) is applied to efficiently calculate the impedance for arbitrary board shape and stackup. Then over one million boards with different shapes, stackup, IC location, and decap placement are randomly generated to train a deep neural network (DNN). The trained DNN can predict the impedance accurately for new board configurations that have not been used for training. The consumed time using the trained DNN is only 0.1 seconds, which is over 100 times faster than the BEM method and 5000 times faster than full-wave simulations.

It is known that the Zircon-type orthovanadates RVO4 show promise in many different applications as catalysts and optical materials. In this work, we demonstrate that the TbVO4 compound can be also used as magnetic refrigerant in efficient and ecofriendly cryocoolers due to its strong magnetocaloric effect at low temperature regime. The application of a relatively low magnetic field of 2 T along the easy magnetization axis (a) gives rise to a maximum entropy change of about 20 J/kg K at 4 K. More interestingly, under sufficiently high magnetic fields, the isothermal entropy change -ΔST remains approximately constant over a wide temperature range which is highly appreciated from a practical point of view. In the magnetic field change of 7 T, -ΔST that reaches roughly 22 J/kg K remains practically unchanged between 0 and 34 K leading to an outstanding refrigerant capacity of about 823 J/kg. On the other hand, the lowering of crystallographic symmetry from the tetragonal to the orthorhombic structure occurring close to 33 K as confirmed by Raman scattering data results in a strong magnetic anisotropy. Accordingly, strong thermal effects can be also obtained simply by spinning the TbVO4 single crystals between their hard and easy orientations in constant magnetic fields instead the standard magnetization-demagnetization process. Such rotating magnetocaloric effects would open the way for the implementation of TbVO4 in a new generation of compact and simplified magnetic refrigerators that can be dedicated to the liquefaction of hydrogen and helium.

Phase separation of metallic and antiferromagnetic (AFM) insulating phases in alkaline iron selenides (AxFe2-ySe2) continues to attract intense interest because the relationship between two peculiar features probably is a key to clarifying the pairing mechanism of AxFe2-ySe2 superconductors. Here we report that the 3D visualizations of nano-scale phase separation in (Na0.32K0.68)0.95Fe1.75Se2 single crystals are revealed by hybrid focused-ion-beam scanning electron microscopy and the superconducting paths are fully percolative in 3D. Moreover, the phase-related ultrafast dynamics in (Na0.32K0.68)0.95Fe1.75Se2 is studied by dual-color pump-probe spectroscopy. The anomalous changes in the electron and acoustic phonon components of transient reflectivity change (ΔR/R) identify two characteristic temperatures T*~100 K (the onset temperature of coupling between nano-metallic and AFM phases) and TH~230 K (the onset temperature of metallic-interface-phase). An energy-transfer channel between the nano-metallic and AFM phases is inferred. This proposed channel provides a new insight into the pairing mechanism of alkaline iron selenide superconductors.

Extracting accurate foreground objects from a scene is an essential step for many video applications. Traditional background subtraction algorithms can generate coarse estimates, but generating high quality masks requires professional softwares with significant human interventions, e.g., providing trimaps or labeling key frames. We propose an automatic foreground extraction method in applications where a static but imperfect background is available. Examples include filming and surveillance where the background can be captured before the objects enter the scene or after they leave the scene. Our proposed method is very robust and produces significantly better estimates than state-of-the-art background subtraction, video segmentation and alpha matting methods. The key innovation of our method is a novel information fusion technique. The fusion framework allows us to integrate the individual strengths of alpha matting, background subtraction and image denoising to produce an overall better estimate. Such integration is particularly important when handling complex scenes with imperfect background. We show how the framework is developed, and how the individual components are built. Extensive experiments and ablation studies are conducted to evaluate the proposed method.

We propose a fully cooperative coinfection model in which singly infected individuals are more likely to acquire a second disease than those who are susceptible, and doubly infected individuals are also assumed to be more contagious than those infected with one disease. The dynamics of such fully cooperative coinfection model between two interacting infectious diseases is investigated through well-mixed and network-based approaches. We show that the former approach exhibits three types of hysteresis, namely, $C$, $S_l$ and $S_r$ types, where the last two types have not been identified before. The first (resp., the second and the third) type exhibits (resp., exhibit) discontinuous outbreak transition from the disease free (resp., low prevalence) state to the high prevalence state when a transmission rate crosses a threshold from the below. Moreover, the third (resp., the first and the second) type possesses (resp., possess) discontinuous eradication transition from the high prevalence state to the low prevalence (resp., disease free) state when the transmission rate reaches a threshold from the above. Complete characterization of these three types of hysteresis in term of parameters measuring the uniformity of the model is also provided. Finally, we assess numerically this epidemic dynamics in random networks.

The nematic order (nematicity) is considered one of the essential ingredients to understand the mechanism of Fe-based superconductivity. In most Fe-based superconductors (pnictides), nematic order is reasonably close to the antiferromagnetic order. In FeSe, in contrast, a nematic order emerges below the structure phase transition at T_s = 90 K with no magnetic order. The case of FeSe is of paramount importance to a universal picture of Fe-based superconductors. The polarized ultrafast spectroscopy provides a tool to probe simultaneously the electronic structure and the magnetic interactions through quasiparticle dynamics. Here we show that this approach reveals both the electronic and magnetic nematicity below and, surprisingly, its fluctuations far above Ts to at least 200 K. The quantitative pump-probe data clearly identify a correlation between the topology of the Fermi surface (FS) and the magnetism in all temperature regimes, thus providing profound insight into the driving factors of nematicity in FeSe and the origin of its uniqueness.

In contrast to mean field theory, we found that \textit{S} deviates from linear dependence on the do** level \textit{p}. The slope of \textit{S} versus \textit{p} changes continuously throughout the whole do** range with no sign of saturation up to \textit{p} = 0.23. Therefore, the picture of Zhang-Rice singlet remains intact within the most prominent do** regimes of HTSC's.

Dirac fermions in Bi$_{\textrm{2}}$Se$_{\textrm{3}}$ are significantly better absorbers of THz radiation than bulk carriers at room temperature. Moreover, the characteristics of THz emission confirm the existence of a recently proposed surface phonon branch that is normalized by Dirac fermions.

The techniques for optical calibration of Jefferson Lab's large-acceptance magnetic hadron spectrometer, BigBite, have been examined. The most consistent and stable results were obtained by using a method based on singular value decomposition. In spite of the complexity of the optics, the particles' positions and momenta at the target have been precisely reconstructed from the coordinates measured in the detectors by means of a single back-tracing matrix. The technique is applicable to any similar magnetic spectrometer and any particle type. For 0.55 GeV/c protons, we have established the vertex resolution of 1.2 cm, angular resolutions of 7 mrad and 16 mrad (in-plane and out-of-plane, respectively), and a relative momentum resolution of 1.6%.

Quasiparticle dynamics of FeSe single crystals revealed by dual-color transient reflectivity measurements (ΔR/R) provides unprecedented information on Fe-based superconductors. The amplitude of fast component in ΔR/R clearly tells a competing scenario between spin fluctuations and superconductivity. Together with the transport measurements, the relaxation time analysis further exhibits anomalous changes at 90 K and 230 K. The former manifests a structure phase transition as well as the associated phonon softening. The latter suggests a previously overlooked phase transition or crossover in FeSe. The electron-phonon coupling constant λ is found to be 0.16, identical to the value of theoretical calculations. Such a small λ demonstrates an unconventional origin of superconductivity in FeSe.

The comprehensive study of the temperature dependent x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) reveals a dynamical spectral weight $α$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ (YBCO). Large spectral weight changes for both the Upper Hubbard band and the Zhang-Rice band due to dynamics of holes are experimentally found in the underdoped regime. A large value of $α\geq 0.3$ is indispensable to describing XAS of YBCO with the conservation of states. The value of $α$ is linearly proportional to the pseudogap temperature in the underdoped regime, but becomes smaller as the do** level goes to the undoped limit. Our results clearly indicate that the pseudogap is related to the double occupancy and originates from bands in higher energies.

Furthermore, for T > Tc, a monotonic increase of tau with decreasing T along the b axis and ab diagonal was observed and can be attributed to a temperature-independent gap Delta$sub p$. The results lend support to recombination dominant scenario of QP dynamics. However, the QP thermalization may take part along the nodal direction in the highly underdoped samples.

To enter the $ν=4$ quantum Hall state directly from the low-field insulator, the two-dimensional system undergoes a crossover from the low-field localization to Landau quantization. The crossover, in fact, covers a wide range with respect to the magnetic field rather than only a small region near the critical point of the insulator-quantum Hall conductor transition.

This bulk-sensitive spectroscopy, combining with the well-textured samples, serves as an effective probe to quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in different crystalline orientations. The significant anisotropy in both the magnitude of the photoinduced transient reflectivity change and the characteristic relaxation time indicates that the nature of the relaxation channel is intrinsically different in various axes and planes. By the orientation-dependent analysis, d-wave symmetry of the bulk-superconducting gap in cuprate superconductors emerges naturally.
