This position paper outlines a new approach to adapting 3D user interface (UI) layouts given the complex nature of end-user preferences. Current optimization techniques, which mainly rely on weighted sum methods, can be inflexible and result in unsatisfactory adaptations. We propose using multi-objective optimization and interactive preference elicitation to provide semi-automated, flexible, and effective adaptations of 3D UIs. Our approach is demonstrated using an example of single-element 3D layout adaptation with ergonomic objectives. Future work is needed to address questions around the presentation and selection of optimal solutions, the impact on cognitive load, and the integration of preference learning. We conclude that, to make adaptive 3D UIs truly effective, we must acknowledge the limitations of our optimization objectives and techniques and emphasize the importance of user control.

Multiexcitons in monolayer WSe2 exhibit a suite of optoelectronic phenomena that are unique to those of their single exciton constituents. Here, photoluminescence action spectroscopy shows that multiexciton formation is enhanced with increasing optical excitation energy. This enhancement is attributed to the multiexciton formation processes from an electron-hole plasma and results in over 300% more multiexciton emission than at lower excitation energies at 4 K. The energetic onset of the enhancement coincides with the quasiparticle bandgap, corroborating the role of the electron-hole plasma, and the enhancement diminishes with increasing temperature. The results reveal that the strong interactions responsible for ultrafast exciton formation also affect multiexciton phenomena, and both multiexciton and single exciton states play significant roles in plasma thermalization in 2D semiconductors.

With the proliferation of consumer virtual reality (VR) headsets and creative tools, content creators have started to experiment with new forms of interactive audience experience using immersive media. Understanding user attention and behaviours in virtual environment can greatly inform creative processes in VR. We developed an abstract VR painting and an experimentation system to study audience encounters through eye gaze and movement tracking. The data from a user experiment with 35 participants reveal a range of user activity patterns in art exploration. Deep learning models are used to study the connections between behavioural data and audience background. New integrated methods to visualise user attention as part of the artwork are also developed as a feedback loop to the content creator.

Cluster analysis is a field of data analysis that extracts underlying patterns in data. One application of cluster analysis is in text-mining, the analysis of large collections of text to find similarities between documents. We used a collection of about 30,000 tweets extracted from Twitter just before the World Cup started. A common problem with real world text data is the presence of linguistic noise. In our case it would be extraneous tweets that are unrelated to dominant themes. To combat this problem, we created an algorithm that combined the DBSCAN algorithm and a consensus matrix. This way we are left with the tweets that are related to those dominant themes. We then used cluster analysis to find those topics that the tweets describe. We clustered the tweets using k-means, a commonly used clustering algorithm, and Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) and compared the results. The two algorithms gave similar results, but NMF proved to be faster and provided more easily interpreted results. We explored our results using two visualization tools, Gephi and Wordle.
