Scalar field theories with a shift symmetry come equipped with the $K$-mouflage (or kinetic screening) mechanism that suppresses the scalar interaction between massive objects below a certain distance, the screening radius. In this work, we study the linear response of the scalar field distribution around a screened (point-like) object subject to a long range external scalar field perturbation for the Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. We find that, for regular boundary conditions at the position of the particle, some multipoles have vanishing response for a lacunar series of the multipole order $\ell$ for any dimension. Some multipoles also exhibit a logarithmic running when the number of spatial dimensions is even. We construct a ladder operator structure, with its associated ladder symmetries, formed by two sets of ladders that are related to the properties of the linear response and the existence of conserved charges. Our results exhibit a remarkable resemblance with the Love numbers properties of black holes in General Relativity, although some intriguing differences subsist.

We explore the construction of four-dimensional thick branes supported by massless 3-forms in a five-dimensional bulk space. The required residual Poincaré symmetry on the brane is realised as a combination of the bulk symmetries and the internal gauge symmetry of the 3-form. We show the presence of a gradient instability for the perturbations orthogonal to the brane when its profile decays slowly in the asymptotic regions. In particular, we ascertain that the prevailing profiles found in the literature are susceptible to such instabilities. We confirm our results by transitioning to the dual formulation in terms of a shift-symmetric scalar. In this formulation, the residual Poincaré group is trivially realised without internal symmetries, and there is a diagonal translational invariance in the fifth dimension reminiscent of the invariance under translations orthogonal to the brane of the dual 3-form. We demonstrate the extension of our results to the cases of de Sitter and Anti de Sitter branes where the gradient instabilities of asymptotically slowly decaying branes persist. Finally, we briefly comment on the construction of thick branes with massive 3-forms and their 1-form duals.

General (tele)parallel Relativity, G$_\parallel$R, is the relativistic completion of Einstein's theories of gravity. The focus of this article is the derivation of the homogeneous and isotropic solution in G$_\parallel$R. The first-principles derivation, based on a non-trivial realisation of the symmetry, supersedes and unifies previous constructions of Riemannian and teleparallel cosmologies, and establishes the uniqueness of the physical solution. The constitutive law and the form of the material and inertial source currents is presented in the tensor (Palatini) formalism and adapted to the cosmological background, which exhibits novel features absent in the previously studied, static solutions to the theory. The results are contrasted with those in some incomplete theories, such as sitting at the three corners of the geometrical trinity and corresponding to particular reference frames in G$_\parallel$R.

In this note, we discuss the pathological nature of black holes in Einsteinian Cubic gravity and its extensions. We compute the equations for the odd perturbations and show how spherically symmetric solutions that asymptotically approach a maximally symmetric space (Minkowski, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter) are associated to having an asymptotically degenerate principal part of the equations. We use these results to argue that the encountered problems will be generic for any other cubic or higher-order with a reduced linear spectrum around maximally symmetric spaces except the well-known healthy case of $f(R)$. We highlight that these pathologies are only alarming when the theory is regarded as a complete theory, but not when considered as a perturbative correction to GR (as in e.g. the effective field theory framework) since the the low-energy physics remains safe from them. Our results thus cast doubts on possible resolutions of the singularities or non-perturbative effects on horizons based on these theories.

In this work we study different aspect of self-interacting 2-form fields with special emphasis in their cosmological applications. We provide the explicit construction of how massless 2-forms are compatible with the cosmological principle without resorting to the dual scalar field formulation. In terms of the 2-form, the residual Euclidean group is non-trivially realised by means of a combination of external spatial translations and internal gauge transformations. After presenting the general discussion of the dualities in cosmological scenarios, we analyse particular examples for some singular models and discuss in some detail the dual descriptions of the DBI, the cuscuton and the ghost condensate as well as the role of the duality in the effective field theories of cosmological perturbations. We then proceed to analysing scenarios with several self-interacting massless 2-forms and we show that they naturally provide the dual description of a solid. We then show how the perfect fluid and superfluids can be obtained by taking the appropriate limits in the dual formulations. We finally consider the case of massive 2-forms and their duals and briefly discuss their potential signatures in gravitational waves astronomy.

We consider a family of non-linear theories of electromagnetism that interpolate between Born-Infeld at small distances and ModMax at large distances. These models are duality invariant and feature a $K-$mouflage screening in the Born-Infeld regime. We focus on computing the static perturbations around a point-like screened charge in terms of two decoupled scalar potentials describing the polar and the axial sectors respectively. Duality invariance imposes that the propagation speed of the odd perturbations goes to zero as fast as the effective screened charge of the object, potentially leading to strong coupling and an obstruction to the viability of the EFT below the screened radius. We then consider the linear response to external fields and compute the electric polarisability and the magnetic susceptibility. Imposing regularity of the perturbations at the position of the particle, we find that the polarisability for the odd multipoles vanishes whilst for the magnetisation Born-Infeld emerges as the only theory with vanishing susceptibility for even multipoles. The perturbation equations factorise in terms of ladder operators connecting different multipoles. There are two such ladder structures for the even sector: one that acts as an automorphism between the first four multipoles and another one that connects multipoles separated by four units. When requiring a similar ladder structure for the odd sector, Born-Infeld arises again as the unique theory. We use this ladder structure to relate the vanishing of the polarisability and the susceptibility to the values of conserved charges. Finally the perturbation equations correspond to a supersymmetric quantum mechanical system such that the polar sector can be described in terms of Schrödinger's equations with four generalised hyperbolic Pösch-Teller potentials whose eigenfunctions are in correspondence with the multipoles.

All energy is gravitational energy. That is the consequence of the equivalence principle, according to which gravity is the universal interaction. The physical charges of this interaction have remained undisclosed, but the Adventof the Geometrical Trinity opened a new approach to this foundational problem. Here it is shown to provide a background-independent unification of the previous, non-covariant approaches of Bergmann-Thomson, Cooperstock, Einstein, von Freud, Landau-Lifshitz, Papapetrou and Weinberg. First, the Noether currents are derived for a generic Palatini theory of gravity coupled with generic matter fields, and then the canonical i.e. the unique charges are robustly derived and analysed, particularly in the metric teleparallel and the symmetric teleparallel versions of General Relativity. These results, and their application to black holes and gravitational waves, are new.

We place observational constraints on two models within a class of scenarios featuring an elastic interaction between dark energy and dark matter that only produces momentum exchange up to first order in cosmological perturbations. The first one corresponds to a perfect-fluid model of the dark components with an explicit interacting Lagrangian, where dark energy acts as a dark radiation at early times and behaves as a cosmological constant at late times. The second one is a dynamical dark energy model with a dark radiation component, where the momentum exchange covariantly modifies the conservation equations in the dark sector. Using Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), and Supernovae type Ia (SnIa) data, we show that the Hubble tension can be alleviated due to the additional radiation, while the $σ_8$ tension present in the $Λ$-Cold-Dark-Matter model can be eased by the weaker galaxy clustering that occurs in these interacting models. Furthermore, we show that, while CMB+BAO+SnIa data put only upper bounds on the coupling strength, adding low-redshift data in the form of a constraint on the parameter $S_8$ strongly favours nonvanishing values of the interaction parameters. Our findings are in line with other results in the literature that could signal a universal trend of the momentum exchange among the dark sector.

General Relativity and the $Λ$CDM framework are currently the standard lore and constitute the concordance paradigm. Nevertheless, long-standing open theoretical issues, as well as possible new observational ones arising from the explosive development of cosmology the last two decades, offer the motivation and lead a large amount of research to be devoted in constructing various extensions and modifications. All extended theories and scenarios are first examined under the light of theoretical consistency, and then are applied to various geometrical backgrounds, such as the cosmological and the spherical symmetric ones. Their predictions at both the background and perturbation levels, and concerning cosmology at early, intermediate and late times, are then confronted with the huge amount of observational data that astrophysics and cosmology are able to offer recently. Theories, scenarios and models that successfully and efficiently pass the above steps are classified as viable and are candidates for the description of Nature. This work is a Review of the recent developments in the fields of gravity and cosmology, presenting the state of the art, high-lighting the open problems, and outlining the directions of future research. Its realization was performed in the framework of the COST European Action ``Cosmology and Astrophysics Network for Theoretical Advances and Training Actions''.

In this paper, we provide a general framework for the construction of the Einstein frame within non-linear extensions of the teleparallel equivalents of General Relativity. These include the metric teleparallel and the symmetric teleparallel, but also the general teleparallel theories. We write the actions in a form where we separate the Einstein--Hilbert term, the conformal mode due to the non-linear nature of the theories (which is analogous to the extra degree of freedom in $f(R)$ theories), and the sector that manifestly shows the dynamics arising from the breaking of local symmetries. This frame is then used to study the theories around the Minkowski background, and we show how all the non-linear extensions share the same quadratic action around Minkowski. As a matter of fact, we find that the gauge symmetries that are lost by going to the non-linear generalisations of the teleparallel General Relativity equivalents arise as accidental symmetries in the linear theory around Minkowski. Remarkably, we also find that the conformal mode can be absorbed into a Weyl rescaling of the metric at this order and, consequently, it disappears from the linear spectrum so only the usual massless spin 2 perturbation propagates. These findings unify in a common framework the known fact that no additional modes propagate on Minkowski backgrounds, and we can trace it back to the existence of accidental gauge symmetries of such a background.

We perform a fit to cosmological observables and confirm previous findings within these scenarios that favour the presence of a coupling at more than $3σ$. This improvement is driven by the Sunyaev-Zeldovich data. We subsequently perform a forecast for future J-PAS data and find that clustering measurements will permit to clearly discern the presence of an interaction within a few percent level with the uncoupled case at more than $10σ$ when the complete survey, covering $8500$ sq. deg., is considered. We found that the inclusion of weak lensing measurements will not help to further constrain the coupling parameter. We consider a cosmological scenario where the dark sector is described by two perfect fluids that interact through a velocity-dependent coupling. This coupling gives rise to an interaction in the dark sector driven by the relative velocity of the components, thus making the background evolution oblivious to the interaction and only the perturbed Euler equations are affected at first order. We obtain the equations governing this system with the Schutz-Sorkin Lagrangian formulation for perfect fluids and derive the corresponding stability conditions to avoid ghosts and Laplacian instabilities. As a particular example, we study a model where dark energy behaves as a radiation fluid at high redshift while it effectively becomes a cosmological constant in the late Universe. Within this scenario, we show that the interaction of both dark components leads to a suppression of the dark matter clustering at late times. We also argue the possibility that this suppression of clustering together with the additional dark radiation at early times can simultaneously alleviate the $σ_8$ and $H_0$ tensions.

The cosmological dynamics can be described by a Lemaître model and understood thanks to a screening mechanism driven by the electromagnetic non-linearities that suppress the dark force on small scales. Only at low redshift, when the screening scale enters the Hubble horizon, do cosmological structures commence to feel the dark repulsion. This repulsive force enhances the local value of the Hubble constant, thus providing a promising scenario for solving the Hubble tension. Remarkably, the dark electromagnetic interaction can have a crucial impact on peculiar velocities, i.e. introducing a bias in their reconstruction methods, and having the potential to explain the presence of a dark flow.

The Javalambre-Physics of the Accelerating Universe Astrophysical Survey (J-PAS) will soon start to scan thousands of square degrees of the northern extragalactic sky with a unique set of $56$ optical filters from a dedicated $2.55$m telescope, JST, at the Javalambre Astrophysical Observatory. Before the arrival of the final instrument (a 1.2 Gpixels, 4.2deg$^2$ field-of-view camera), the JST was equipped with an interim camera (JPAS-Pathfinder), composed of one CCD with a 0.3deg$^2$ field-of-view and resolution of 0.23 arcsec pixel$^{-1}$. To demonstrate the scientific potential of J-PAS, with the JPAS-Pathfinder camera we carried out a survey on the AEGIS field (along the Extended Groth Strip), dubbed miniJPAS. We observed a total of $\sim 1$ deg$^2$, with the $56$ J-PAS filters, which include $54$ narrow band (NB, $\rm{FWHM} \sim 145$Angstrom) and two broader filters extending to the UV and the near-infrared, complemented by the $u,g,r,i$ SDSS broad band (BB) filters. In this paper we present the miniJPAS data set, the details of the catalogues and data access, and illustrate the scientific potential of our multi-band data. The data surpass the target depths originally planned for J-PAS, reaching $\rm{mag}_{\rm {AB}}$ between $\sim 22$ and $23.5$ for the NB filters and up to $24$ for the BB filters ($5σ$ in a $3$~arcsec aperture). The miniJPAS primary catalogue contains more than $64,000$ sources extracted in the $r$ detection band with forced photometry in all other bands. We estimate the catalogue to be complete up to $r=23.6$ for point-like sources and up to $r=22.7$ for extended sources. Photometric redshifts reach subpercent precision for all sources up to $r=22.5$, and a precision of $\sim 0.3$% for about half of the sample. (Abridged)

Among the general class of metric-affine theories of gravity, there is a special class conformed by those endowed with a projective symmetry. Perhaps the simplest manner to realise this symmetry is by constructing the action in terms of the symmetric part of the Ricci tensor. In these theories, the connection can be solved algebraically in terms of a metric that relates to the spacetime metric by means of the so-called deformation matrix that is given in terms of the matter fields. In most phenomenological applications, this deformation matrix is assumed to inherit the symmetries of the matter sector so that in the presence of an isotropic energy-momentum tensor, it respects isotropy. In this work we discuss this condition and, in particular, we show how the deformation matrix can be anisotropic even in the presence of isotropic sources due to the non-linear nature of the equations. Remarkably, we find that Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld theories do not admit anisotropic deformations, but more general theories do. However, we find that the anisotropic branches of solutions are generally prone to a pathological physical behaviour.

We consider cosmological models where dark matter is charged under a dark Abelian gauge field. This new interaction is repulsive and competes with gravity on large scales and in the dynamics of galaxies and clusters. We focus on non-linear models of dark electrodynamics where the effects of the new force are screened within a K-mouflage radius that helps avoiding traditional constraints on charged dark matter models. We discuss the background cosmology of these models in a Newtonian approach and show the equivalence with relativistic Lemaître models where an inhomogeneous pressure due to the electrostatic interaction is present. In particular, we find that dark matter shells of different radii evolve differently as they exit their K-mouflage radii at different times, resulting in a breaking of the initial comoving evolution. In the large time regime, the background cosmology is described by comoving but inhomogeneous model with a reduced gravitational Newton constant and a negative curvature originating from the electrostatic pressure. Baryons do not directly feel the electrostatic interaction, but are influenced by the inhomogeneous matter distribution induced by the electric force. We find that shells of smaller radii evolve faster than the outer shells which feel the repulsive interaction earlier. This mimics the discrepancy between the large scale Hubble rate and the local one. Similarly, as galaxies and clusters are not screened by the new interaction, large scale global flows would result from the existence of the new dark electromagnetic interaction.

We discuss the presence of ghostly instabilities for metric-affine theories constructed with higher order curvature terms. We mainly focus on theories containing only the Ricci tensor and show the crucial role played by the projective symmetry. The pathological modes arise from the absence of a pure kinetic term for the projective mode and the non-minimal coupling of a 2-form field contained in the connection, and which can be related to the antisymmetric part of the metric in non-symmetric gravity theories. The couplings to matter are considered at length and cannot be used to render the theories stable. We discuss different procedures to avoid the ghosts by adding additional constraints. We finally argue how these pathologies are expected to be present in general metric-affine theories unless much care is taken in their construction.

The geometrical formulation of gravity is not unique and can be set up in a variety of spacetimes. Even though the gravitational sector enjoys this freedom of different geometrical interpretations, consistent matter couplings have to be assured for a steady foundation of gravity. In generalised geometries, further ambiguities arise in the matter couplings unless the minimal coupling principle (MCP) is adopted that is compatible with the principles of relativity, universality and inertia. In this work, MCP is applied to all Standard Model gauge fields and matter fields in a completely general (linear) affine geometry. This is also discussed from an effective field theory perspective. It is found that the presence of torsion generically leads to theoretical problems. However, symmetric teleparallelism, wherein the affine geometry is integrable and torsion-free, is consistent with MCP. The generalised Bianchi identity is derived and shown to determine the dynamics of the connection in a unified fashion. Also, the parallel transport with respect to a teleparallel connection is shown to be free of second clock effects.

In the weak-field, low-velocity regime, the components follow Keplerian orbits. We investigate how the orbital parameters evolve for dipole-dominated emission and find that the orbit quickly circularises, though not as efficiently as for a gravitationally dominated emission. We then regard circular orbits, and look for modifications in the gravitational waveform from the components carrying small charges. Taking this into account we populate the waveform with simplified LIGO noise and put it through a matched filtering procedure where the template bank only consists of uncharged templates, focusing on the charges' effect on the chirp mass estimation. We find a consistent overestimation of the `generalised' chirp mass, and a possible over- and underestimation of the actual chirp mass. Finally, we briefly consider the effect of such charges on hyperbolic encounters, finding again a bias arising from interpreting the generalised chirp mass as the actual chirp mass.

These extra modes can arise from new spin-2 fields (as in e.g. bigravity theories) or from non-trivial realisations of the cosmological principle induced by background vector fields with internal symmetries (e.g. Yang-Mills, gaugids or multi-Proca). We develop a general cosmological framework to study such novel features due to oscillations. The evolution of the two tensor modes is described by a linear system of coupled second order differential equations exhibiting friction, velocity, chirality and mass mixing. We follow appropriate schemes to obtain approximate solutions for the evolution of both modes and show the corresponding phenomenology for different mixings. Observational signatures include modulations of the wave-form, oscillations of the GW luminosity distance, anomalous GW speed and chirality. We discuss the prospects of observing these effects with present and future GW observatories such as LIGO/VIRGO and LISA.

Poincaré gauge theories provide an approach to gravity based on the gauging of the Poincaré group, whose homogeneous part generates curvature while the translational sector gives rise to torsion. In this note we revisit the stability of the widely studied quadratic theories within this framework. We analyse the presence of ghosts without fixing any background by obtaining the relevant interactions in an exact post-Riemannian expansion. We find that the axial sector of the theory exhibits ghostly couplings to the graviton sector that render the theory unstable. Remarkably, imposing the absence of these pathological couplings results in a theory where either the axial sector or the torsion trace becomes a ghost. We conclude that imposing ghost-freedom generically leads to a non-dynamical torsion. We analyse however two special choices of parameters that allow a dynamical scalar in the torsion and obtain the corresponding effective action where the dynamics of the scalar is apparent. These special cases are shown to be equivalent to a generalised Brans-Dicke theory and a Holst Lagrangian with a dynamical Barbero-Immirzi pseudoscalar field respectively. The two sectors can co-exist giving a bi-scalar theory. Finally, we discuss how the ghost nature of the vector sector can be avoided by including additional dimension four operators.

Imposing a local symmetry under the general linear group singles out the general teleparallel equivalent of General Relativity carrying both torsion and non-metricity. We provide a detailed discussion on the teleparallel equivalents of General Relativity and how the two known equivalents, formulated on Weitzenböck and symmetric teleparallel geometries respectively, can be interpreted as two gauge-fixed versions of the general teleparallel equivalent. We then explore the viability of the general quadratic theory by studying the spectrum around Minkowski. The linear theory generally contains two symmetric rank-2 fields plus a 2-form and, consequently, extra gauge symmetries are required to obtain potentially viable theories.

We revisit the field content and consistency of the New General Relativity family of theories. These theories are constructed in a geometrical framework with a flat and metric-compatible connection, so the affine structure is entirely determined by the torsion. The action is given by a local and parity-preserving quadratic form of the torsion with three free parameters. It is well-known that a special choice of parameters gives an equivalent to General Relativity and that the spectrum of the general linear theory around Minkowski contains an additional 2-form field. It has been suggested that the viability of these theories at linear order requires the 2-form field to feature a gauge symmetry so that it describes a massless Kalb-Ramond field. In this work we revisit these previous results and compute the cubic interactions. We also obtain the decoupling limit of the theories and show that the required gauge symmetry for the 2-form at linear order cannot be extended to higher orders. This signals towards a pathological behaviour of these theories and singles out the equivalent of General Relativity as the only consistent New General Relativity theory with a stable Minkowski background that includes gravity.

The universal character of the gravitational interaction provided by the equivalence principle motivates a geometrical description of gravity. The standard formulation of General Relativity à la Einstein attributes gravity to the spacetime curvature, to which we have grown accustomed. However, this perception has masked the fact that two alternative, though equivalent, formulations of General Relativity in flat spacetimes exist, where gravity can be fully ascribed either to torsion or to non-metricity. The latter allows a simpler geometrical formulation of General Relativity that is oblivious to the affine spacetime structure. Generalisations along this line permit to generate teleparallel and symmetric teleparallel theories of gravity with exceptional properties. In this work we explore modified gravity theories based on non-linear extensions of the non-metricity scalar. After presenting some general properties and briefly studying some interesting background cosmologies (including accelerating solutions with relevance for inflation and dark energy), we analyse the behaviour of the cosmological perturbations. Tensor perturbations feature a re-scaling of the corresponding Newton's constant, while vector perturbations do not contribute in the absence of vector sources. In the scalar sector we find two additional propagating modes, hinting that $f(Q)$ theories introduce, at least, two additional degrees of freedom. These scalar modes disappear around maximally symmetric backgrounds because of the appearance of an accidental residual gauge symmetry corresponding to a restricted diffeomorphism. We finally discuss the potential strong coupling problems of these maximally symmetric backgrounds caused by the discontinuity in the number of propagating modes.

The constructed Lagrangian is such that the vector field propagates at most three degrees of freedom, thus avoiding the ghostly nature of a fourth polarisation. The construction makes use of the well-known condition for constrained systems of having a degenerate Hessian. We briefly discuss the casuistry according to the nature of the existing constraints algebra. We also explore various classes of interesting new interactions that have been recently raised in the literature. For the sixth order Lagrangian that satisfies the constraints by itself we prove its topological character, making such a term irrelevant. There is however a window of opportunity for exploring other classes of fully-nonlinear interactions that satisfy the constraint algebra by mixing terms of various order.

The action of the theory enjoys an enhanced symmetry and avoids the second derivatives that appear in the conventional Einstein-Hilbert action. While it implies the equivalent classical dynamics, the improved action principle can make a difference in considerations of energetics, thermodynamics, and quantum theory. This essay reports on possible progress in those three aspects of gravity theory. In the so-called purified gravity, 1) energy-momentum is described locally by a conserved, symmetric tensor, 2) the Euclidean path integral is convergent without the addition of boundary or regulating terms and 3) it is possible to identify a canonical frame for quantisation.

We consider a cosmological model with an interaction between dark matter and dark energy which leaves the background cosmology unaffected and only affects the evolution of the perturbations. This is achieved by introducing a coupling given in terms of the relative velocities of dark matter and dark energy. This interaction has the distinctive feature of appearing predominantly on small scales, where peculiar velocities can become important. We confront the predictions of the model to cosmological observations and find a potential alleviation of the known tension in the amplitude of density perturbations as measured by low redshift galaxy surveys and the Planck data. The model also predicts a shift in the turnover of the matter power spectrum which does not depend on the horizon at equality (fixed by the background cosmology and, thus, unaffected by the perturbations) and is entirely due to the interaction between dark matter and dark energy. A bias in the peculiar velocity between baryons and dark matter is also shown to be a unique feature of this type of interactions in the dark sector.

This is clarified by considering a sub-class of theories constructed only with the Ricci tensor and showing that the non-projectively invariant sector propagates ghost-like degrees of freedom. We also explain how these pathologies can be avoided either by imposing a projective symmetry or additional constraints in the gravity sector. Our results put forward that higher order curvature gravity theories generally remain pathological in the metric-affine (and hybrid) formalisms and highlight the key importance of the projective symmetry and/or additional constraints for their physical viability and, by extension, of general metric-affine theories.

The most up to date femto- and micro-lensing constraints indicate that primordial black holes of $\sim 10^{-16} M_\odot$ and $\sim 10^{-12} M_\odot$, respectively, may constitute a large fraction of the dark matter. We describe analytically and numerically the dynamics by which inflationary fluctuations featuring a time-varying propagation speed or an effective Planck mass can lead to abundant primordial black hole production. As an example, we provide an ad hoc DBI-like model. A very large primordial spectrum originating from a small speed of sound typically leads to strong coupling within the vanilla effective theory of inflationary perturbations. However, we point out that ghost inflation may be able to circumvent this problem. We consider as well black hole formation in solid inflation, for which, in addition to an analogous difficulty, we stress the importance of the reheating process. In addition, we review the basic formalism for the collapse of large radiation density fluctuations, emphasizing the relevance of an adequate choice of gauge invariant variables.

The detection of the GW170817/GRB170817A event improved the constraints on the propagation speed of gravitational waves, thus placing possible variations caused by dark energy under restraint. For models based on scalar fields belonging to the family of Horndeski Lagrangians, non-minimal derivative couplings are now severely constrained, entailing a substantially limited phenomenology. In this work we want to stress that there is still a plethora of dark energy models that get around this obstacle while still providing interesting phenomenologies able to distinguish them from the standard cosmology. We focus on a class involving vector fields as a proxy, but our discussion is extensible to a broader class of models. In particular, we show the possibility of having a non-minimal derivative coupling giving a non-trivial effect on scalar modes without affecting gravitational waves and the possibility of having a second tensor mode that can oscillate into gravitational waves. We also present a novel class of configurations breaking rotational invariance but with an energy-momentum tensor that is isotropic on-shell. This peculiar feature makes the scalar and vector sectors of the perturbations mix so that, even in a perfectly isotropic background cosmology, preferred direction effects can appear in the perturbations. We also comment on models that give rise to isotropic solutions when averaging over rapid oscillations of the vector fields. The explored models are classified according to distinctive field configurations that provide inequivalent realisations of the Cosmological Principle.

The Palatini formalism is developed for gravitational theories in flat geometries. We focus on two particularly interesting scenarios. First, we fix the connection to be metric compatible, but we follow a completely covariant approach by imposing the constraints with suitable Lagrange multipliers. For a general quadratic theory we show how torsion naturally propagates and we reproduce the Teleparallel Equivalent of General Relativity as a particular quadratic action that features an additional Lorentz symmetry. We then study the much less explored theories formulated in a geometry with neither curvature nor torsion, so that all the geometrical information is encoded in the non-metricity. We discuss how this geometrical framework leads to a purely inertial connection that can thus be completely removed by a coordinate gauge choice, the coincident gauge. From the quadratic theory we recover a simpler formulation of General Relativity in the form of the Einstein action, which enjoys an enhanced symmetry that reduces to a second linearised diffeomorphism at linear order. More general theories in both geometries can be formulated consistently by taking into account the inertial connection and the associated additional degrees of freedom. As immediate applications, the new cosmological equations and their Newtonian limit are considered, where the role of the lapse in the consistency of the equations is clarified, and the Schwarzschild black hole entropy is computed by evaluating the corresponding Euclidean action. We discuss how the boundary terms in the usual formulation of General Relativity are related to different choices of coordinates in its coincident version and show that in isotropic coordinates the Euclidean action is finite without the need to introduce boundary or normalisation terms.

We consider theories for scalar and vector fields coupled to the energy-momentum tensor. Since these fields also carry a non-trivial energy-momentum tensor, the coupling prescription generates self-interactions. In analogy with gravity theories, we built the action by means of an iterative process that leads to an infinite series, which can be resumed as the solution of a set of differential equations. We show that, in some particular cases, the equations become algebraic and that is also possible to find solutions in the form of polynomials. We briefly review the case of the scalar field that has already been studied in the literature and extend the analysis to the case of derivative (disformal) couplings. We then explore theories with vector fields, distinguishing between gauge- and non-gauge-invariant couplings. Interactions with matter are also considered, taking a scalar field as a proxy for the matter sector. We also discuss the ambiguity introduced by superpotential (boundary) terms in the definition of the energy-momentum tensor and use them to show that it is also possible to generate Galileon-like interactions with this procedure. We finally use collider and astrophysical observations to set constraints on the dimensionful coupling which characterises the phenomenology of these models.

The metric-affine variational principle is applied to generate teleparallel and symmetric teleparallel theories of gravity. From the latter is discovered an exceptional class which is consistent with a vanishing affine connection. Based on this remarkable property, this work proposes a simpler geometrical formulation of General Relativity that is oblivious to the affine spacetime structure, thus fundamentally depriving gravity of any inertial character. The resulting theory is described by the Hilbert action purged from the boundary term and is more robustly underpinned by the spin-2 field theory, where an extra symmetry is now manifest, possibly related to the double copy structure of the gravity amplitudes. This construction also provides a novel starting point for modified gravity theories, and the paper presents new and simple generalisations where analytical self-accelerating cosmological solutions arise naturally in the early and late time universe.

We study the evolution of gravitational waves for non-singular cosmological solutions within the framework of Born-Infeld inspired gravity theories, with special emphasis on the Eddington-inspired Born-Infeld theory. We review the existence of two types of non-singular cosmologies, namely bouncing and asymptotically Minkowski solutions, from a perspective that makes their features more apparent. We study in detail the propagation of gravitational waves near these non-singular solutions and carefully discuss the origin and severity of the instabilities and strong coupling problems that appear. We also investigate the role of the adiabatic sound speed of the matter sector in the regularisation of the gravitational waves evolution. We extend our analysis to more general Born-Infeld inspired theories where analogous solutions are found. As a general conclusion, we obtain that the bouncing solutions are generally more prone to instabilities, while the asymptotically Minkowski solutions can be rendered stable, making them appealing models for the early universe.

We study a large family of metric-affine theories with a projective symmetry, including non-minimally coupled matter fields which respect this invariance. The symmetry is straightforwardly realised by imposing that the connection only enters through the symmetric part of the Ricci tensor, even in the matter sector. We leave the connection completely free (including torsion) and obtain its general solution as the Levi-Civita connection of an auxiliary metric, showing that the torsion only appears as a projective mode. This result justifies the widely used condition of setting vanishing torsion in these theories as a simple gauge choice. We apply our results to some particular cases considered in the literature like the so-called Eddington-inspired-Born-Infeld theories among others. We finally discuss the possibility of imposing a gauge fixing where the connection is metric compatible and comment on the genuine character of the non-metricity in theories where the two metrics are not conformally related.

General Relativity has shown an outstanding observational success in the scales where it has been directly tested. However, modifications have been intensively explored in the regimes where it seems either incomplete or signals its own limit of validity. In particular, the breakdown of unitarity near the Planck scale strongly suggests that General Relativity needs to be modified at high energies and quantum gravity effects are expected to be important. This is related to the existence of spacetime singularities when the solutions of General Relativity are extrapolated to regimes where curvatures are large. In this sense, Born-Infeld inspired modifications of gravity have shown an extraordinary ability to regularise the gravitational dynamics, leading to non-singular cosmologies and regular black hole spacetimes in a very robust manner and without resorting to quantum gravity effects. This has boosted the interest in these theories in applications to stellar structure, compact objects, inflationary scenarios, cosmological singularities, and black hole and wormhole physics, among others. We review the motivations, various formulations, and main results achieved within these theories, including their observational viability, and provide an overview of current open problems and future research opportunities.
