We present measurements of the resistivity $ρ_{x,x}$ of URu2Si2 high-quality single crystals in pulsed high magnetic fields up to 81~T at a temperature of 1.4~K and up to 60~T at temperatures down to 100~mK. For a field \textbf{H} applied along the magnetic easy-axis \textbf{c}, a strong sample-dependence of the low-temperature resistivity in the hidden-order phase is attributed to a high carrier mobility. The interplay between the magnetic and orbital properties is emphasized by the angle-dependence of the phase diagram, where magnetic transition fields and crossover fields related to the Fermi surface properties follow a 1/$\cosθ$-law, $θ$ being the angle between \textbf{H} and \textbf{c}. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{c}$, a crossover defined at a kink of $ρ_{x,x}$, as initially reported in [Shishido et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. \textbf{102}, 156403 (2009)], is found to be strongly sample-dependent: its characteristic field $μ_0H^*$ varies from $\simeq20$~T in our best sample with a residual resistivity ratio RRR of $225$ to $\simeq25$~T in a sample with a RRR of $90$. A second crossover is defined at the maximum of $ρ_{x,x}$ at the sample-independent characteristic field $μ_0H_{ρ,max}^{LT}\simeq30$~T. Fourier analyzes of SdH oscillations show that $H_{ρ,max}^{LT}$ coincides with a sudden modification of the Fermi surface, while $H^*$ lies in a regime where the Fermi surface is smoothly modified. For $\mathbf{H}\parallel\mathbf{a}$, i) no phase transition is observed at low temperature and the system remains in the hidden-order phase up to 81~T, ii) quantum oscillations surviving up to 7~K are related to a new and almost-spherical orbit - for the first time observed here - at the frequency $F_λ\simeq1400$~T and associated with a low effective mass $m^*_λ=(1\pm0.5)\cdot m_0$, and iii) no Fermi surface modification occurs up to 81~T.

A study of the antiferromagnet CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ by torque, magnetostriction, and transport in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50 Tesla and by thermal expansion in static fields up to 13 Tesla is presented. The magnetic field-temperature phase diagram of CeRh$_2$Si$_2$, where the magnetic field is applied along the easy axis $\mathbf{c}$, is deduced from these measurements. The second-order phase transition temperature $T_{N}$ and the first-order phase transition temperature $T_{1,2}$ (=~36 K and 26 K at zero-field, respectively) decrease with increasing field. The field-induced antiferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic borderline $H_c$, which equals 26 T at 1.5 K, goes from first-order at low temperature to second-order at high temperature. The magnetic field-temperature phase diagram is found to be composed of (at least) three different antiferromagnetic phases. These are separated by the first-order lines $H_{1,2}$, corresponding to $T_{1,2}$ at H=0, and $H_{2,3}$, which equals 25.5 T at 1.5 K. A maximum of the $T^2$-coefficient $A$ of the resistivity is observed at the onset of the high-field polarized regime, which is interpreted as the signature of an enhanced effective mass at the field-induced quantum instability. The magnetic field dependence of the $A$ coefficient in CeRh$_2$Si$_2$ is compared with its pressure dependence, and also with the field dependence of $A$ in the prototypal heavy-fermion system CeRu$_2$Si$_2$.

Data are in agreement with the standard Lifshitz-Kosevitch theory, which confirms the presence of a coherent Fermi surface in the ground state of underdoped cuprates. A low frequency $F = 530 \pm 10$ T is reported in both measurements, pointing to small Fermi pocket, which corresponds to 2% of the first Brillouin zone area only. This low value is in sharp contrast with that of overdoped Tl$_2$Ba$_2$CuO$_{6+δ}$, where a high frequency $F = 18$ kT has been recently reported and corresponds to a large hole cylinder in agreement with band structure calculations. These results point to a radical change in the topology of the Fermi surface on opposing sides of the cuprate phase diagram.

We report the electronic and magnetic behaviour of the frustrated triangular metallic antiferromagnet 2H-AgNiO2 in high magnetic fields (54 T) using thermodynamic and transport measurements. Here localized d electrons are arranged on an antiferromagnetic triangular lattice nested inside a honeycomb lattice with itinerant d electrons. When the magnetic field is along the easy axis we observe a cascade of field-induced transitions, attributed to the competition between easy-axis anisotropy, geometrical frustration and coupling of the localized and itinerant system. The quantum oscillations data suggest that the Fermi surface is reconstructed by the magnetic order but in high fields magnetic breakdown orbits are possible. The itinerant electrons are extremely sensitive to scattering by spin fluctuations and a significant mass enhancement (~ 3) is found.

By improving the experimental conditions and extensive data accumulation, we have achieved very high-precision in the measurements of the de Haas-van Alphen effect in the underdoped high-temperature superconductor YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{6.5}$. We find that the main oscillation, so far believed to be single-frequency, is composed of three closely spaced frequencies. We attribute this to bilayer splitting and war** of a single quasi-2D Fermi surface, indicating that \emph{c}-axis coherence is restored at low temperature in underdoped cuprates. Our results do not support the existence of a larger frequency of the order of 1650 T reported recently in the same compound [S.E. Sebastian {\it et al}., Nature {\bf 454}, 200 (2008)].

The de Haas-van Alphen effect was observed in the underdoped cuprate YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ via a torque technique in pulsed magnetic fields up to 59 T. Above an irreversibility field of $\sim$30 T, the magnetization exhibits clear quantum oscillations with a single frequency of 540 T and a cyclotron mass of 1.76 times the free electron mass, in excellent agreement with previously observed Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations. The oscillations obey the standard Lifshitz-Kosevich formula of Fermi-liquid theory. This thermodynamic observation of quantum oscillations confirms the existence of a well-defined, close and coherent, Fermi surface in the pseudogap phase of cuprates.

Motivated by the observation of inhomogeneous patterns in some high-T$_c$ cuprate compounds, several variational Gutzwiller-projected wave-functions with built-in charge and bond order parameters are proposed for the extended $t-J-V$ model on the square lattice at low do**. First, following a recent Gutzwiller-projected mean-field approach by one of us (Phys. Rev. B. {\bf 72}, 060508(R) (2005)), we investigate, as a function of do** and Coulomb repulsion, the stability of the staggered flux phase with respect to small spontaneous modulations of squared unit cells ranging from $2\times 2$ to $\sqrt{32}\times\sqrt{32}$. It is found that a $4\times 4$ bond-order (BO) modulation appears spontaneously on top of the staggered flux pattern for hole do** around 1/8. A related wave-function is then constructed and optimized accurately and its properties studied extensively using an approximation-free variational Monte Carlo scheme. Finally, the competition of the BO-modulated staggered flux wave-function w.r.t. the d-wave RVB wave-function or the commensurate flux state is investigated. It is found that a short range Coulomb repulsion penalizes the d-wave superconductor and that a moderate Coulomb repulsion brings them very close in energy. Our results are discussed in connection to the STM observations in the under-doped regime of some cuprates.
