In 1975, Erdős asked for the maximum number of edges that an $n$-vertex graph can have if it does not contain two edge-disjoint cycles on the same vertex set. It is known that Turán-type results can be used to prove an upper bound of $n^{3/2+o(1)}$. However, this approach cannot give an upper bound better than $Ω(n^{3/2})$. It is known that Turán-type results can be used to prove an upper bound of $n^{3/2+o(1)}$. However, this approach cannot give an upper bound better than $Ω(n^{3/2})$. We show that, for any $k\geq 2$, every $n$-vertex graph with at least $n \cdot \mathrm{polylog}(n)$ edges contains $k$ pairwise edge-disjoint cycles with the same vertex set, resolving this old problem in a strong form up to a polylogarithmic factor. The well-known construction of Pyber, Rödl and Szemerédi of graphs without $4$-regular subgraphs shows that there are $n$-vertex graphs with $Ω(n\log \log n)$ edges which do not contain two cycles with the same vertex set, so the polylogarithmic term in our result cannot be completely removed.
Our proof combines a variety of techniques including sublinear expanders, absorption and a novel tool for regularisation, which is of independent interest. Among other applications, this tool can be used to regularise an expander while still preserving certain key expansion properties.

A zero-one matrix $M$ is said to contain another zero-one matrix $A$ if we can delete some rows and columns of $M$ and replace some $1$-entries with $0$-entries such that the resulting matrix is $A$. The extremal number of $A$, denoted $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)$, is the maximum number of $1$-entries that an $n\times n$ zero-one matrix can have without containing $A$. The systematic study of this function for various patterns $A$ goes back to the work of Füredi and Hajnal from 1992, and the field has many connections to other areas of mathematics and theoretical computer science. The problem has been particularly extensively studied for so-called acyclic matrices, but very little is known about the general case (that is, the case where $A$ is not necessarily acyclic). We prove the first asymptotically tight general result by showing that if $A$ has at most $t$ $1$-entries in every row, then $\operatorname{ex}(n,A)\leq n^{2-1/t+o(1)}$. This verifies a conjecture of Methuku and Tomon.
Our result also provides the first tight general bound for the extremal number of vertex-ordered graphs with interval chromatic number $2$, generalizing a celebrated result of Füredi, and Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov about the (unordered) extremal number of bipartite graphs with maximum degree $t$ in one of the vertex classes.

Let $P_n^t$ denote the $t$-th power of a monotone path on $n$ vertices. The ordered Ramsey numbers of powers of paths have been extensively studied. We prove that there exists an absolute constant $C$ such that $R_<(K_s,P_n^t)\leq R(K_s,K_t)^{C} \cdot n$ holds for all $s,t,n$, which is tight up to the value of $C$. As a corollary, we obtain that there is an absolute constant $C$ such that $R_<(K_n,P_n^t)\leq n^{Ct}$. These results resolve a problem and a conjecture of Gishboliner, ** and Sudakov. Furthermore, we show that $R_<(P_n^t,P_n^t)\leq n^{4+o(1)}$ for any fixed $t$. This answers questions of Balko, Cibulka, Král and Kynčl, and of Gishboliner, ** and Sudakov.

Let $f(n, v, e)$ denote the maximum number of edges in a 3-uniform hypergraph on $n$ vertices which does not contain $v$ vertices spanning at least $e$ edges. A central problem in extremal combinatorics, famously posed by Brown, Erdős and Sós in 1973, asks whether $f(n, e+3, e)=o(n^2)$ for every $e \ge 3$. A classical result of Sárközy and Selkow states that $f(n, e+\lfloor \log_2 e\rfloor+2, e)=o(n^{2})$ for every $e \ge 3$. This bound was recently improved by Conlon, Gishboliner, Levanzov and Shapira.
Motivated by applications to other problems, Gowers and Long made the striking conjecture that $f(n, e+4, e)=O(n^{2-\varepsilon})$ for some $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(e)>0$. Conlon, Gishboliner, Levanzov and Shapira, and later, Shapira and Tyomkyn reiterated the following approximate version of this problem. What is the smallest $d(e)$ for which $f(n, e+d(e), e)=O(n^{2-\varepsilon})$ for some $\varepsilon=\varepsilon(e)>0$? In this paper, we prove that for each $e\geq 3$ we have $f(n, e+\lfloor \log_2 e\rfloor +38, e)=O(n^{2-\varepsilon})$ for some $\varepsilon>0$. This shows that one can already obtain power saving near the Sárközy-Selkow bound at the cost of a small additive constant.

This was proved by Grzesik, and independently by Hatami, Hladký, Král', Norine and Razborov. As an extension of this result for longer cycles, we prove that for each odd $k\geq 7$, the balanced blow-up of $C_k$ (uniquely) maximises the number of $k$-cycles among $C_{k-2}$-free graphs on $n$ vertices, as long as $n$ is sufficiently large. We also show that this is no longer true if $n$ is not assumed to be sufficiently large. Our result strengthens results of Grzesik and Kielak who proved that for each odd $k\geq 7$, the balanced blow-up of $C_k$ maximises the number of $k$-cycles among graphs with a given number of vertices and no odd cycles of length less than $k$.
We further show that if $k$ and $\ell$ are odd and $k$ is sufficiently large compared to $\ell$, then the balanced blow-up of $C_{\ell+2}$ does not asymptotically maximise the number of $k$-cycles among $C_{\ell}$-free graphs on $n$ vertices. This disproves a conjecture of Grzesik and Kielak.

There has been an extensive amount of work towards estimating this function, but until very recently only the case $t=s+1$ was well understood. A recent breakthrough of Mattheus and Verstraëte on the Ramsey number $r(4,k)$ states that $f_{2,4}(n)\leq n^{1/3+o(1)}$, which matches the known lower bound up to the $o(1)$ term. In this paper we build on their approach and generalize this result by proving that $f_{s,s+2}(n)\leq n^{\frac{2s-3}{4s-5}+o(1)}$ holds for every $s\geq 2$. This comes close to the best known lower bound, improves a substantial body of work and is the best that any construction of similar kind can give.

The study of this function was initiated by Alon and Ben-Eliezer. They characterized the family of graphs $H$ for which $g(n,H)$ is bounded and asked whether it is true that for every other graph $g(n,H)$ is polynomial. We show that this is not the case and characterize the family of connected graphs $H$ for which $g(n,H)$ grows polynomially. Answering another question of theirs, we also prove that for every $\varepsilon>0$, there is some $r=r(\varepsilon)$ such that $g(n,K_r)\geq n^{1-\varepsilon}$ for all sufficiently large $n$.
Finally, we show that the above problem is connected to the Erdős-Gyárfás function in Ramsey Theory, and prove a family of special cases of a conjecture of Conlon, Fox, Lee and Sudakov by showing that for each fixed $r$ the complete $r$-uniform hypergraph $K_n^{(r)}$ can be edge-coloured using a subpolynomial number of colours in such a way that at least $r$ colours appear among any $r+1$ vertices.

We show that for every $\ell\ge 4$, ex$(n,C_{2\ell}^{\square})=Θ(n^{3/2})$. This resolves a conjecture of He, Li and Feng.
2. The hexagonal tiling in honeycomb is one of the most natural structures in the real world. We show that the extremal number of honeycomb graphs has the same order of magnitude as their basic building unit 6-cycles.
3. We also consider bipartite graphs from quadrangulations of the cylinder and the torus. We prove near optimal bounds for both configurations. In particular, our method gives a very short proof of a tight upper bound for the extremal number of the 2-dimensional grid, improving a recent result of Bradač, Janzer, Sudakov and Tomon.
Our proofs mix several ideas, including shifting embedding schemes, weighted homomorphism and subgraph counts and asymmetric dependent random choice.

A recent general result of Sudakov and Tomon implies the slightly stronger bound $\mathrm{ex}(n,Q_d)=o(n^{2-1/d})$. We obtain the first power-improvement for this old problem by showing that $\mathrm{ex}(n,Q_d)=O_d(n^{2-\frac{1}{d-1}+\frac{1}{(d-1)2^{d-1}}})$. This answers a question of Liu. Moreover, our techniques give a power improvement for a larger class of graphs than cubes.
We use a similar method to prove that any $n$-vertex, properly edge-coloured graph without a rainbow cycle has at most $O(n(\log n)^2)$ edges, improving the previous best bound of $n(\log n)^{2+o(1)}$ by Tomon. Furthermore, we show that any properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with $ω(n\log n)$ edges contains a cycle which is almost rainbow: that is, almost all edges in it have a unique colour. This latter result is tight.

The study of the Turán function of $K_{s,t}^{(r)}$ received considerable interest in recent years. Our main results are as follows. First, we show that
\begin{equation}
\mathrm{ex}(n,K_{s,t}^{(r)}) = O_{s,r}(t^{\frac{1}{s-1}}n^{r - \frac{1}{s-1}})
\end{equation}
for all $s,t\geq 2$ and $r\geq 3$, improving the power of $n$ in the previously best bound and resolving a question of Mubayi and Verstraëte about the dependence of $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_{2,t}^{(3)})$ on $t$. Second, we show that this upper bound is tight when $r$ is even and $t \gg s$. This disproves a conjecture of Xu, Zhang and Ge. Third, we show that the above upper bound is not tight for $r = 3$, namely that $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_{s,t}^{(3)}) = O_{s,t}(n^{3 - \frac{1}{s-1} - \varepsilon_s})$ (for all $s\geq 3$). This indicates that the behaviour of $\mathrm{ex}(n,K_{s,t}^{(r)})$ might depend on the parity of $r$. Lastly, we prove a conjecture of Ergemlidze, Jiang and Methuku on the hypergraph analogue of the bipartite Turán problem for graphs with bounded degrees on one side. Our tools include a novel twist on the dependent random choice method as well as a variant of the celebrated norm graphs constructed by Kollár, Rónyai and Szabó.

In 1974, Erdős posed the following problem. Given an oriented graph $H$, determine or estimate the maximum possible number of $H$-free orientations of an $n$-vertex graph. When $H$ is a tournament, the answer was determined precisely for sufficiently large $n$ by Alon and Yuster. In general, when the underlying undirected graph of $H$ contains a cycle, one can obtain accurate bounds by combining an observation of Kozma and Moran with celebrated results on the number of $F$-free graphs. As the main contribution of the paper, we resolve all remaining cases in an asymptotic sense, thereby giving a rather complete answer to Erdős's question. Moreover, we determine the answer exactly when $H$ is an odd cycle and $n$ is sufficiently large, answering a question of Araújo, Botler and Mota.

It is well known that ${\rm mc}(G)\ge m/2$ for any $m$-edge graph $G$, and the difference ${\rm mc}(G)-m/2$ is called the surplus of $G$. The study of the surplus of $H$-free graphs was initiated by Erdős and Lovász in the 70s, who in particular asked what happens for triangle-free graphs. This was famously resolved by Alon, who showed that in the triangle-free case the surplus is $Ω(m^{4/5})$, and found constructions matching this bound. We prove several new results in this area.
Firstly, we show that for every fixed odd $r\ge 3$, any $C_r$-free graph with $m$ edges has surplus $Ω_r\big(m^{\frac{r+1}{r+2}}\big)$. This is tight, as is shown by a construction of pseudorandom $C_r$-free graphs due to Alon and Kahale. It improves previous results of several researchers, and complements a result of Alon, Krivelevich and Sudakov which is the same bound when $r$ is even.
Secondly, generalizing the result of Alon, we allow the graph to have triangles, and show that if the number of triangles is a bit less than in a random graph with the same density, then the graph has large surplus. For regular graphs our bounds on the surplus are sharp.
Thirdly, we prove that an $n$-vertex graph with few copies of $K_r$ and average degree $d$ has surplus $Ω_r(d^{r-1}/n^{r-3})$, which is tight when $d$ is close to $n$ provided that a conjectured dense pseudorandom $K_r$-free graph exists. This result is used to improve the best known lower bound (as a function of $m$) on the surplus of $K_r$-free graphs.
Our proofs combine techniques from semidefinite programming, probabilistic reasoning, as well as combinatorial and spectral arguments.

The best known lower bound for this problem is $Ω(d^{1/2})$ by Huang, Ma, Shapira, Sudakov and Yuster. They asked whether this estimate can be improved at least for directed paths instead of cycles and whether one can find a long path starting from any vertex if the host digraph is connected. In this paper we break the $\sqrt{d}$ barrier, showing how to find a path of length $Ω(d^{1/2+1/40})$ from any vertex of a connected Eulerian digraph.

The problem of Zarankiewicz asks for the maximum number of edges in a bipartite graph on $n$ vertices which does not contain the complete bipartite graph $K_{k,k}$ as a subgraph. A classical theorem due to Kővári, Sós, and Turán says that this number of edges is $O\left(n^{2 - 1/k}\right)$. An important variant of this problem is the analogous question in bipartite graphs with VC-dimension at most $d$, where $d$ is a fixed integer such that $k \geq d \geq 2$. A remarkable result of Fox, Pach, Sheffer, Suk, and Zahl [J. Eur. Math. Soc. (JEMS), no. 19, 1785-1810] with multiple applications in incidence geometry shows that, under this additional hypothesis, the number of edges in a bipartite graph on $n$ vertices and with no copy of $K_{k,k}$ as a subgraph must be $O\left(n^{2 - 1/d}\right)$. This theorem is sharp when $k=d=2$, because by design any $K_{2,2}$-free graph automatically has VC-dimension at most $2$, and there are well-known examples of such graphs with $Ω\left(n^{3/2}\right)$ edges. However, it turns out this phenomenon no longer carries through for any larger $d$.
We show the following improved result: the maximum number of edges in bipartite graphs with no copies of $K_{k,k}$ and VC-dimension at most $d$ is $o(n^{2-1/d})$, for every $k \geq d \geq 3$.

In this paper we propose an algebraic framework to the problem and formulate a corresponding stronger conjecture. Using the Combinatorial Nullstellensatz, we reduce the Erdős-Faber-Lovász conjecture to the existence of non-zero coefficients in certain polynomials. These coefficients are in turn related to the number of orientations with prescribed in-degree sequences of some auxiliary graphs. We prove the existence of certain orientations, which verifies a necessary condition for our algebraic approach to work.

We prove that for any integer $k\geq 2$, $\mathrm{ex}^*(n,C_{2k})=O(n^{1+1/k})$. This is tight and establishes a conjecture of Keevash, Mubayi, Sudakov and Verstraëte. We use the same method to prove several other conjectures in various topics. First, we prove that there exists a constant $c$ such that any properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graph with more than $cn(\log n)^4$ edges contains a rainbow cycle. It is known that there exist properly edge-coloured $n$-vertex graphs with $Ω(n\log n)$ edges which do not contain any rainbow cycle. Secondly, we show that in any proper edge-colouring of $K_n$ with $o(n^{\frac{r}{r-1}\cdot \frac{k-1}{k}})$ colours, there exist $r$ colour-isomorphic, pairwise vertex-disjoint copies of $C_{2k}$. This proves in a strong form a conjecture of Conlon and Tyomkyn, and a strenghtened version proposed by Xu, Zhang, **g and Ge. Moreover, we answer a question of Jiang and Newman by showing that there exists a constant $c=c(r)$ such that any $n$-vertex graph with more than $cn^{2-1/r}(\log n)^{7/r}$ edges contains the $r$-blowup of an even cycle. Finally, we prove that the $r$-blowup of $C_{2k}$ has Turán number $O(n^{2-\frac{1}{r}+\frac{1}{k+r-1}+o(1)})$, which can be used to disprove an old conjecture of Erd\H os and Simonovits.

Abstract:
Finding the maximum number of induced cycles of length $k$ in a graph on $n$ vertices has been one of the most intriguing open problems of Extremal Graph Theory. Recently Balogh, Hu, Lidický and Pfender answered the question in the case $k=5$. In this paper we determine precisely, for all sufficiently large $n$, the maximum number of induced $5$-cycles that an $n$-vertex planar graph can contain.

Given a graph $H$, the extremal number $\mathrm{ex}(n,H)$ is the largest number of edges in an $H$-free graph on $n$ vertices. We make progress on a number of conjectures about the extremal number of bipartite graphs. First, writing $K'_{s,t}$ for the subdivision of the bipartite graph $K_{s,t}$, we show that $\mathrm{ex}(n, K'_{s,t}) = O(n^{3/2 - \frac{1}{2s}})$. This proves a conjecture of Kang, Kim and Liu and is tight up to the implied constant for $t$ sufficiently large in terms of $s$. Second, for any integers $s, k \geq 1$, we show that $\mathrm{ex}(n, L) = Θ(n^{1 + \frac{s}{sk+1}})$ for a particular graph $L$ depending on $s$ and $k$, answering another question of Kang, Kim and Liu. This result touches upon an old conjecture of Erdős and Simonovits, which asserts that every rational number $r \in (1,2)$ is realisable in the sense that $\mathrm{ex}(n,H) = Θ(n^r)$ for some appropriate graph $H$, giving infinitely many new realisable exponents and implying that $1 + 1/k$ is a limit point of realisable exponents for all $k \geq 1$. Writing $H^k$ for the $k$-subdivision of a graph $H$, this result also implies that for any bipartite graph $H$ and any $k$, there exists $δ> 0$ such that $\mathrm{ex}(n,H^{k-1}) = O(n^{1 + 1/k - δ})$, partially resolving a question of Conlon and Lee. Third, extending a recent result of Conlon and Lee, we show that any bipartite graph $H$ with maximum degree $r$ on one side which does not contain $C_4$ as a subgraph satisfies $\mathrm{ex}(n, H) = o(n^{2 - 1/r})$.

This is an improvement of a recent result of the author, where he obtained a tower-type bound. Prior to our work, the best known bound was an Ackermann-type function in $r$ and $d$, though it did not depend on $\mathbb{F}$. It follows from our results that a biased polynomial has low rank; there too we obtain a polynomial dependence improving the previously known Ackermann-type bound. A similar polynomial bound for the partition rank was obtained independently and simultaneously by Milićević.

Let $G$ be a regular graph of degree $d$ and let $A\subset V(G)$. Say that $A$ is $η$-closed if the average degree of the subgraph induced by $A$ is at least $ηd$. This says that if we choose a random vertex $x\in A$ and a random neighbour $y$ of $x$, then the probability that $y\in A$ is at least $η$. The work of this paper was motivated by an attempt to obtain a qualitative description of closed subsets of the Cayley graph $Γ$ whose vertex set is $\mathbb F_2^{n_1}\otimes \dots \otimes \mathbb F_2^{n_d}$ with two vertices joined by an edge if their difference is of the form $u_1\otimes \cdots \otimes u_d$. For the matrix case (that is, when $d=2$), such a description was obtained by Khot, Minzer and Safra, a breakthrough that completed the proof of the 2-to-2 conjecture. In this paper, we formulate a conjecture for higher dimensions, and prove it in an important special case. Also, we identify a statement about $η$-closed sets in Cayley graphs on arbitrary finite Abelian groups that implies the conjecture and can be considered as a "highly asymmetric Balog-Szemerédi-Gowers theorem" when it holds. We conclude the paper by showing that this statement is not true for an arbitrary Cayley graph. It remains to decide whether the statement can be proved for the Cayley graph $Γ$.
