We report magnetization measurements, full-potential band structure calculations, and microscopic modeling for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg magnets A2CuP2O7 (A = Na, Li). Based on a quantitative evaluation of the leading exchange integrals and the subsequent quantum Monte-Carlo simulations, we propose a quasi-one-dimensional magnetic model for both compounds, in contrast to earlier studies that conjectured on the two-dimensional scenario. The one-dimensional nature of A2CuP2O7 is unambiguously verified by magnetization isotherms measured in fields up to 50 T. The saturation fields of about 40 T for both Li and Na compounds are in excellent agreement with the intrachain exchange J1 ~ 27 K extracted from the magnetic susceptibility data. The proposed magnetic structure entails spin chains with the dominating antiferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction J1 and two inequivalent, nonfrustrated antiferromagnetic interchain couplings of about 0.01*J1 each. A possible long-range magnetic ordering is discussed in comparison with the available experimental information.

The J1-J2 model plays an important role for recently synthesized chain cuprates as well as in supersymmetric Yang Mills theories. We study the thermodynamic properties using field theory, a modified spin-wave theory as well as numerical density-matrix renormalization group calculations. Furthermore, we compare with results for the classical model obtained by analytical methods and Monte-Carlo simulations. As one of our main results we present numerical evidence that the susceptibility at the QCP seems to diverge with temperature T as chi ~ T^{-1.2} in the quantum case in contrast to the classical model where chi ~ T^{-4/3}.

A microscopic magnetic model of the low-pressure modification of CdVO3 is established, based on density functional theory (DFT) band-structure calculations, magnetization measurements, and quantum Monte-Carlo simulations. This compound is a rare example of a quasi-one-dimensional spin-1/2 system showing exclusively ferromagnetic exchange. The spin lattice of CdVO3 entails zigzag chains with an effective intrachain coupling J ~ -90 K and interchain couplings of Jc ~ -18 K and Ja ~ -3 K. Quantum fluctuations are partially suppressed by the sizable interchain coupling Jc that leads to an intermediate regime between one-dimensional and two-dimensional ferromagnetic systems. Apart from the peculiar spin model, CdVO3 features an unusual mechanism of ferromagnetic superexchange. The couplings largely originate from Cd 5s states mediating hop**s between half-filled and empty 3d states of V+4.

We find an exotic regime of frustrated interchain couplings owing to two inequivalent exchanges of 10 K each. Peculiar superexchange paths grant an opportunity to investigate bond-randomness effects under partial Cl-Br substitution.

The spin model for alpha-Cu2P2O7 is compared to the models of the isostructural beta-Cu2V2O7 and alpha-Cu2As2O7 systems. As a surprise, coupled dimers in alpha-Cu2P2O7 and alternating chains in alpha-Cu2As2O7 contrast with a honeycomb lattice in beta-Cu2V2O7. We find that the qualitative difference in the coupling regime of these isostructural compounds is governed by the nature of AO4 side groups: d-elements (A = V) hybridize with nearby O atoms forming a Cu-O-A-O-Cu superexchange path, while for p-elements (A = P, As) the superexchange is realized via O-O edges of the tetrahedron. Implications for a broad range of systems are discussed.

We derive and investigate the microscopic model of the quantum magnet BiCu2PO6 using band structure calculations, magnetic susceptibility and high-field magnetization measurements, as well as ED and DMRG techniques. The resulting quasi-one-dimensional spin model is a two-leg AFM ladder with frustrating next-nearest-neighbor couplings along the legs. The individual couplings are estimated from band structure calculations and by fitting the magnetic susceptibility with theoretical predictions, obtained using ED. The nearest-neighbor leg coupling J1, the rung coupling J4, and one of the next-nearest-neighbor couplings J2 amount to 120-150 K, while the second next-nearest-neighbor coupling is J2'~J2/2. The spin ladders do not match the structural chains, and although the next-nearest-neighbor interactions J2 and J2' have very similar superexchange pathways, they differ substantially in magnitude due to a tiny difference in the O-O distances and in the arrangement of non-magnetic PO4 tetrahedra. An extensive ED study of the proposed model provides the low-energy excitation spectrum and shows that the system is in the strong rung coupling regime. The strong frustration by the next-nearest-neighbor couplings leads to a triplon branch with an incommensurate minimum. This is further corroborated by a strong-coupling expansion up to second order in the inter-rung coupling. Based on high-field magnetization measurements, we estimate the spin gap of 32 K and suggest the likely presence of antisymmetric DM anisotropy and inter-ladder coupling J3. We also provide a tentative description of the physics of BiCu2PO6 in magnetic field, in the light of the low-energy excitation spectra and numerical calculations based on ED and DMRG. In particular, we raise the possibility for a rich interplay between one- and two-component Luttinger liquid phases and a magnetization plateau at 1/2 of the saturation value.

We report on the microscopic model of the recently synthesized one-dimensional quantum magnet (NO)Cu(NO3)3. Applying density functional theory band structure calculations, we obtain a leading antiferromagnetic exchange coupling J ~ 200 K, which runs via NO3 groups forming spin chains along the b direction. Much weaker couplings J' ~ 2 K link the chains into layers in a non-frustrated manner. Our calculations do not support the earlier conjecture on an anisotropic frustrated square lattice physics in (NO)Cu(NO3)3. In contrast, the model of uniform spin chains leads to a remarkably good fit of the experimental magnetic susceptibility data, although the low-temperature features of the intrinsic magnetic susceptibility measured by electron spin resonance might call for extension of the model. We outline possible experiments to observe the suggested long-range magnetic ordering in (NO)Cu(NO3)3 and briefly compare this compound to other spin-1/2 uniform-chain systems.

We report on band structure calculations and a microscopic model of the low-dimensional magnet beta-Cu2V2O7. Magnetic properties of this compound can be described by a spin-1/2 anisotropic honeycomb lattice model with the averaged coupling \bar J1=60-66 K. The low symmetry of the crystal structure leads to two inequivalent couplings J1 and J1', but this weak spatial anisotropy does not affect the essential physics of the honeycomb spin lattice. The structural realization of the honeycomb lattice is highly non-trivial: the leading interactions J1 and J1' run via double bridges of VO4 tetrahedra between spatially separated Cu atoms, while the interactions between structural nearest neighbors are negligible. The non-negligible inter-plane coupling Jperp~15 K gives rise to the long-range magnetic ordering at TN~26 K. Our model simulations improve the fit of the magnetic susceptibility data, compared to the previously assumed spin-chain models. Additionally, the simulated ordering temperature of 27 K is in remarkable agreement with the experiment. Our study evaluates beta-Cu2V2O7 as the best available experimental realization of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice. We also provide an instructive comparison of different band structure codes and computational approaches to the evaluation of exchange couplings in magnetic insulators.

The green mineral dioptase Cu6Si6O18(H2O)6 has been known since centuries and plays an important role in esoteric doctrines. In particular, the green dioptase is supposed to grant the skill to speak with trees and to understand the language of birds. Armed with natural samples of dioptase, we were able to unravel the magnetic nature of the mineral (presumably with hidden support from birds and trees) and show that strong quantum fluctuations can be realized in an essentially framework-type spin lattice of coupled chains, thus neither frustration nor low-dimensionality are prerequisites. We present a microscopic magnetic model for the green dioptase. Based on full-potential DFT calculations, we find two relevant couplings in this system: an antiferromagnetic coupling J_c, forming spiral chains along the hexagonal c axis, and an inter-chain ferromagnetic coupling J_d within structural Cu2O6 dimers. To refine the J_c and J_d values and to confirm the proposed spin model, we perform quantum Monte-Carlo simulations for the dioptase spin lattice. The derived magnetic susceptibility, the magnetic ground state, and the sublattice magnetization are in remarkably good agreement with the experimental data. The refined model parameters are J_c = 78 K and J_d = -37 K with J_d/J_c ~ -0.5. Despite the apparent three-dimensional features of the spin lattice and the lack of frustration, strong quantum fluctuations in the system are evidenced by a broad maximum in the magnetic susceptibility, a reduced value of the Neel temperature T_N ~ 15 K >> J_c, and a low value of the sublattice magnetization m = 0.55 Bohr magneton. All these features should be ascribed to the low coordination number of 3 that outbalances the three-dimensional nature of the spin lattice.

A microscopic magnetic model for the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain compound CuSe2O5 is developed based on the results of a joint experimental and theoretical study. Magnetic susceptibility and specific heat data give evidence for quasi-1D magnetism with leading antiferromagnetic (AFM) couplings and an AFM ordering temperature of 17 K. For microscopic insight, full-potential DFT calculations within the local density approximation (LDA) were performed. Using the resulting band structure, a consistent set of transfer integrals for an effective one-band tight-binding model was obtained. Electronic correlations were treated on a mean-field level starting from LDA (LSDA+U method) and on a model level (Hubbard model). In excellent agreement of experiment and theory, we find that only two couplings in CuSe2O5 are relevant: the nearest-neighbour intra-chain interaction of 165 K and a non-frustrated inter-chain coupling of 20 K. From a comparison with structurally related systems (Sr2Cu(PO4)2, Bi2CuO4), general implications for a magnetic ordering in presence of inter-chain frustration are made.

Combining density functional electronic structure and model calculations with thermodynamical measurements we reveal the microscopic origin of this unexpected incident -- a crystal water driven switching of the magnetically active orbitals. We find that the values of exchange integrals are strongly dependent on O--H distance inside the hydroxyl groups, present in most spin-1/2 kagome compounds up to date. Besides the original kagome model, considering only the nearest neighbour exchange, we emphasize the crucial role of the exchange along the diagonals of the kagome lattice.
