A functional time series approach is proposed for investigating spatial correlation in daily maximum temperature forecast errors for 111 cities spread across the U.S. The modelling of spatial correlation is most fruitful for longer forecast horizons, and becomes less relevant as the forecast horizon shrinks towards zero. For 6-day-ahead forecasts, the functional approach uncovers interpretable regional spatial effects, and captures the higher variance observed in inland cities versus coastal cities, as well as the higher variance observed in mountain and midwest states. The functional approach also naturally handles missing data through modelling a continuum, and can be implemented efficiently by exploiting the sparsity induced by a B-spline basis.
The temporal dependence in the data is modeled through temporal dependence in functional basis coefficients. Independent first order autoregressions with generalized autoregressive conditional heteroskedasticity [AR(1)+GARCH(1,1)] and Student-t innovations work well to capture the persistence of basis coefficients over time and the seasonal heteroskedasticity reflecting higher variance in winter. Through exploiting autocorrelation in the basis coefficients, the functional time series approach also yields a method for improving weather forecasts and uncertainty quantification. The resulting method corrects for bias in the weather forecasts, while reducing the error variance.

The most prevalent scope of interest for OCR applications used to be scanned documents, but it has now shifted towards the natural scene. Despite the change of times, the existing evaluation methods are still based on the old criteria suited better for the past interests. In this paper, we propose PopEval, a novel evaluation approach for the recent OCR interests. The new and past evaluation algorithms were compared through the results on various datasets and OCR models. Compared to the other evaluation methods, the proposed evaluation algorithm was closer to the human's qualitative evaluation than other existing methods. Although the evaluation algorithm was devised as a character-level approach, the comparative experiment revealed that PopEval is also compatible on existing benchmark datasets annotated at word-level. The proposed evaluation algorithm is not only applicable to current end-to-end tasks, but also suggests a new direction to redesign the evaluation concept for further OCR researches.

We theoretically and numerically investigate magnetic domain wall dynamics in a nanowire of easy-cone magnet. The easy-cone domain wall exhibits several distinguishing dynamic features in comparison to the easy-axis domain wall. The features of easy-cone domain wall are related to the generation of additional chiral spin textures due to the domain wall precession, which is common for various driving sources such as magnetic fields and spin-transfer torques. The unique easy-cone domain wall dynamics could enrich magnetic domain wall study and find use in device applications based on easy-cone domain walls.

Gaussian processes are rich distributions over functions, with generalization properties determined by a kernel function. When used for long-range extrapolation, predictions are particularly sensitive to the choice of kernel parameters. It is therefore critical to account for kernel uncertainty in our predictive distributions. We propose a distribution over kernels formed by modelling a spectral mixture density with a Lévy process. The resulting distribution has support for all stationary covariances--including the popular RBF, periodic, and Matérn kernels--combined with inductive biases which enable automatic and data efficient learning, long-range extrapolation, and state of the art predictive performance. The proposed model also presents an approach to spectral regularization, as the Lévy process introduces a sparsity-inducing prior over mixture components, allowing automatic selection over model order and pruning of extraneous components. We exploit the algebraic structure of the proposed process for $\mathcal{O}(n)$ training and $\mathcal{O}(1)$ predictions. We perform extrapolations having reasonable uncertainty estimates on several benchmarks, show that the proposed model can recover flexible ground truth covariances and that it is robust to errors in initialization.

Chiral spin textures at the interface between ferromagnetic and heavy nonmagnetic metals, such as Neel-type domain walls and skyrmions, have been studied intensively because of their great potential for future nanomagnetic devices. The Dyzaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) is an essential phenomenon for the formation of such chiral spin textures. In spite of recent theoretical progress aiming at understanding the microscopic origin of the DMI, an experimental investigation unravelling the physics at stake is still required. Here, we experimentally demonstrate the close correlation of the DMI with the anisotropy of the orbital magnetic moment and with the magnetic dipole moment of the ferromagnetic metal. The density functional theory and the tight-binding model calculations reveal that asymmetric electron occupation in orbitals gives rise to this correlation.

We propose an extended droplet model to determine the nucleation field as a function of the in-plane field. The model can explain the experimentally observed nucleation in a CoNi microstrip with the interfacial DMI. The results are also reproduced by micromagnetic simulation based on the string model. The electrical measurement method proposed in this study can be widely used to quantitatively determine the DMI energy density.

Interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in ferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers is recently of considerable interest as it offers an efficient control of domain walls and the stabilization of magnetic skyrmions. However, its effect on the performance of perpendicular spin transfer torque memory has not been explored yet. We show based on numerical studies that the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction decreases the thermal energy barrier while increases the switching current. As high thermal energy barrier as well as low switching current is required for the commercialization of spin torque memory, our results suggest that the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction should be minimized for spin torque memory applications.

During laser micro-polishing, the constant control of laser energy density is a key technology to improve the surface roughness. In this paper, a method which controls the energy density of UV(ultraviolet) pulse laser in real time with the control of CW(continuous wave) laser spot size in laser micro-polishing for metallic surface was presented. The experimental and analytical considerations of several influence factors such as laser spot size, fusion zone and focal offset were investigated. In addition, using a laser micro-polishing system manufactured with this method, the laser micro-polishing experiments on the two different surface shapes of stainless steel 316L were conducted. For the inclined or curved surface, the surface roughness improvements of up to 56.4% and 57.3% were respectively obtained, and the analysis of the results were discussed.
