In a recent work by some of us it was shown that the long-standing discrepancy between the QCD perturbation series for the inclusive hadronic tau decay rate computed in the CIPT and FOPT expansion approaches can be understood from the fact that CIPT has an infrared (IR) sensitivity that it not compatible with the standard form of the operator production expansion (OPE). For concrete IR renormalon models for the QCD Adler function the resulting CIPT-FOPT discrepancy, the asymptotic separation, can be calculated analytically from the Borel representation of the CIPT series expansion. If the known perturbative corrections for the QCD Adler function at the 5-loop level already have a sizeable contribution from the asymptotic behavior related to the gluon condensate (GC) renormalon, the asymptotic separation is dominated by that renormalon. This implies that the CIPT expansion can be reconciled with FOPT, when a renormalon-free scheme for the GC is adopted. In this talk we discuss such a renormalon-free scheme for the GC, which involves perturbative subtractions in analogy to using short-distance quark mass schemes instead of the pole mass. Using a concrete realistic high-order Borel model for the Adler function consistent with the known corrections up to 5 loops and containing a sizeable GC renormalon contribution, we show that the CIPT-FOPT discrepancy can be avoided when switching to the renormalon-free GC scheme. At the same time, the perturbative convergence of $τ$ hadronic spectral funtion moments strongly sensitive to the GC OPE corrections is considerably improved. We show that these improvements may lead to higher precision for strong coupling determinations.

In a previous article, we have shown that the discrepancy between the fixed-order (FOPT) and contour-improved (CIPT) perturbative expansions for $τ$ hadronic spectral function moments, which had affected the precision of $α_s$ determinations for many years, may be reconciled by employing a renormalon-free (RF) scheme for the gluon condensate (GC) matrix element. In addition, the perturbative convergence of spectral function moments with a sizeable GC correction can be improved. The RF GC scheme depends on an IR factorization scale $R$ and the normalization $N_g$ of the GC renormalon. In the present work, we use three different methods to determine $N_g$, yielding a result with an uncertainty of $40\%$. Following two recent state-of-the-art strong coupling determination analyses at ${\cal O}(α_s^5)$, we show that using the renormalon-free GC scheme successfully reconciles the results for $α_s({m_τ^2})$ based on CIPT and FOPT. The uncertainties due to variations of $R$ and the uncertainty of $N_g$ only lead to a small or moderate increase of the final uncertainty of $α_s(m_τ^2)$, and affect mainly the CIPT expansion method. The FOPT and CIPT results obtained in the RF GC scheme may be consistently averaged. The RF GC scheme thus constitutes a powerful new ingredient for future analyses of $τ$ hadronic spectral function moments.

We propose a simple and easy-to-implement scheme for a renormalon-free gluon condensate (GC) matrix element, which is analogous to implementations of short-distance heavy-quark mass renormalization schemes existing in the literature already for a long time. Because the scheme is based on a perturbative subtraction at the level of the matrix element, with a freely adaptable infrared factorization scale, it can be implemented with little effort for any observable where the GC is relevant. The scheme depends on the renormalon norm of the GC which has to be supplemented independently. We apply the scheme to the fixed-order (FOPT) and contour-improved (CIPT) perturbative expansions of $τ$ hadronic spectral function moments. These expansions exhibit a long-standing discrepancy for moments used in high-precision determinations of the strong coupling in the commonly used GC scheme that is not renormalon-free. We show that the scheme is capable of resolving the FOPT-CIPT discrepancy problem. At the same time, the perturbative behaviour of the moments that previously showed bad convergence properties and for which the non-perturbative corrections from the GC are sizeable, is substantially improved. The new GC scheme may provide a powerful theoretical tool for future phenomenological applications.

This implies that the predictions of both methods may be reconciled in infrared subtracted perturbation theory. In this talk we explore this implication concretely in the large-$β_0$ approximation, where the perturbation series is known to all orders, using a renormalon-free scheme for the gluon condensate.

Estimates of higher-order contributions for perturbative series in QCD, in view of their asymptotic nature, are delicate, though indispensable for a reliable error assessment in phenomenological applications. In this work, the Adler function and the scalar correlator are investigated, and models for Borel transforms of their perturbative series are constructed, which respect general constraints from the operator product expansion and the renormalisation group. As a novel ingredient, the QCD coupling is employed in the so-called $C$-scheme, which has certain advantages. For the Adler function, previous results obtained directly in the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme are supported. Corresponding results for the scalar correlation function are new. It turns out that the substantially larger perturbative corrections for the scalar correlator in $\overline{\rm MS}$ are dominantly due to this scheme choice, and can be largely reduced through more appropriate renormalisation schemes, which are easy to realise in the $C$-scheme.

We present the physics program of the Belle II experiment, located on the intensity frontier SuperKEKB $e^+e^-$ collider. Belle II collected its first collisions in 2018, and is expected to operate for the next decade. It is anticipated to collect 50/ab of collision data over its lifetime. This book is the outcome of a joint effort of Belle II collaborators and theorists through the Belle II theory interface platform (B2TiP), an effort that commenced in 2014. The aim of B2TiP was to elucidate the potential impacts of the Belle II program, which includes a wide scope of physics topics: B physics, charm, tau, quarkonium, electroweak precision measurements and dark sector searches. It is composed of nine working groups (WGs), which are coordinated by teams of theorist and experimentalists conveners: Semileptonic and leptonic B decays, Radiative and Electroweak penguins, phi_1 and phi_2 (time-dependent CP violation) measurements, phi_3 measurements, Charmless hadronic B decay, Charm, Quarkonium(like), tau and low-multiplicity processes, new physics and global fit analyses. This book highlights "golden- and silver-channels", i.e. those that would have the highest potential impact in the field. Theorists scrutinised the role of those measurements and estimated the respective theoretical uncertainties, achievable now as well as prospects for the future. Experimentalists investigated the expected improvements with the large dataset expected from Belle II, taking into account improved performance from the upgraded detector.

We demonstrate that these contributions cancel when the perturbative expansion is expressed in terms of the so-called $C$-scheme coupling $\hatα_s$ which has recently been introduced in Ref. [1]. It is furthermore conjectured that a $ζ_4$ term should arise in the Adler function at order $α_s^5$ in the $\overline{\rm MS}$-scheme, and that this term is expected to disappear in the $C$-scheme as well.

In order to capture this dependence in a transparent way, a novel definition of the QCD coupling, denoted by $\hat a$, is introduced, whose running is explicitly renormalisation scheme invariant. The remaining renormalisation scheme dependence is related to transformations of the QCD scale $Λ$, and can be parametrised by a single parameter $C$. Hence, we call $\hat a$ the $C$-scheme coupling. The dependence on $C$ can be exploited to study and improve perturbative predictions of physical observables. This is demonstrated for the QCD Adler function and hadronic decays of the $τ$ lepton.

Besides ${\rm Im}Ψ(s)$, which is relevant for Higgs decay into quarks, two other physical correlators, $Ψ^{"}(s)$ and $D^L(s)$, have been employed in QCD applications like quark mass determinations or hadronic $τ$ decays. $D^L(s)$ suffers from large higher-order corrections and, by resorting to the large-$β_0$ approximation, it is shown that this is related to a spurious renormalon ambiguity at $u=1$. Hence, this correlator should be avoided in phenomenological analyses. Moreover, it turns out advantageous to express the quark mass factor, introduced to make the scalar current renormalisation group invariant, in terms of the renormalisation invariant quark mass $\hat m_q$. To further study the behaviour of the perturbative expansion, we introduce a QCD coupling $\hatα_s$, whose running is explicitly renormalisation scheme independent. We present a new analysis of the ratio epsilon'/epsilon within the Standard Model (SM) using a formalism that is manifestly independent of the values of leading (V-A)x(V-A) QCD penguin, and EW penguin hadronic matrix elements of the operators Q_4, Q_9, and Q_10, and applies to the SM as well as extensions with the same operator structure. It is valid under the assumption that the SM exactly describes the data on CP-conserving K -> pi pi amplitudes. As a result of this and the high precision now available for CKM and quark mass parameters, to high accuracy epsilon'/epsilon depends only on two non-perturbative parameters, B_6^(1/2) and B_8^(3/2), and perturbatively calculable Wilson coefficients. Within the SM, we are separately able to determine the hadronic matrix element <Q_4>_0 from CP-conserving data, significantly more precisely than presently possible with lattice QCD. Employing B_6^(1/2) = 0.57+-0.19 and B_8^(3/2) = 0.76+-0.05, extracted from recent results by the RBC-UKQCD collaboration, we obtain epsilon'/epsilon = (1.9+-4.5) 10^-4, substantially more precise than the recent RBC-UKQCD prediction and 2.9 sigma below the experimental value (16.6+-2.3) 10^-4, with the error being fully dominated by that on B_6^(1/2). Even discarding lattice input completely, but employing the recently obtained bound B_6^(1/2) <= B_8^(3/2) <= 1 from the large-N approach, the SM value is found more than 2 sigma below the experimental value. At B_6^(1/2) = B_8^(3/2) = 1, varying all other parameters within one sigma, we find epsilon'/epsilon = (8.6+-3.2) 10^-4. We present a detailed anatomy of the various SM uncertainties, including all sub-leading hadronic matrix elements, briefly commenting on the possibility of underestimated SM contributions as well as on the impact of our results on new physics models.

In a combined study of the decay spectra of $τ^-\to K_Sπ^-ν_τ$ and $τ^-\to K^-ην_τ$ decays within a dispersive representation of the required form factors, we illustrate how the $K^*(1410)$ resonance parameters, defined through the pole position in the complex plane, can be extracted with improved precision as compared to previous studies. While we obtain a substantial improvement in the mass, the uncertainty in the width is only slightly reduced, with the findings $M_{K^{*\prime}}=1304 \pm 17\,$MeV and $Γ_{K^{*\prime}} = 171 \pm 62\,$MeV. Further constraints on the width could result from updated analyses of the $Kπ$ and/or $Kη$ spectra using the full Belle-I data sample. Prospects for Belle-II are also discussed. As the $K^-π^0$ vector form factor enters the description of the decay $τ^-\to K^-ην_τ$, we are in a position to investigate isospin violations in its parameters like the form factor slopes. In this respect also making available the spectrum of the transition $τ^-\to K^-π^0ν_τ$ would be extremely useful, as it would allow to study those isospin violations with much higher precision.

Precisely for this reason, however, good control over the perturbative QCD corrections, the non-perturbative condensate contributions in the framework of the operator product expansion (OPE), as well as the corrections going beyond the OPE, the duality violations (DVs), is required. On the perturbative QCD side, the contour-improved versus fixed-order resummation of the series is still an issue, and will be discussed. Regarding the analysis, self-consistent fits to the data including all theory parameters have to be performed, and this is also explained in some detail. The fit quantities are moment integrals of the tau spectral function data in a certain energy window and care should be taken to have acceptable perturbative behaviour of those moments as well as control over higher-dimensional operator corrections in the OPE.

The behavior of Π_{V-A}(Q^2) near euclidean momentum Q^2=0 is used to determine the effective low-energy constants L_10^eff and C_87^eff related to the renormalized low-energy constants L_10^r and C_87^r in the chiral lagrangian. We also investigate how well two-loop chiral perturbation theory describes Π_{V-A}(Q^2) as a function of Q^2. This is the first determination of L_10^eff and C_87^eff to employ a fully self-consistent model for the violations of quark-hadron duality in both the vector and axial channels. We also discuss the values of the coefficients C_{6,V-A} and C_{8,V-A} governing the dimension six and eight contributions to the operator product expansion representation of Π_{V-A}(Q^2).

Various moments of the hadronic spectral functions have been employed in the determination of the strong coupling alpha_s from tau decays. In this work we study the behaviour of their perturbative series under different assumptions for the large-order behaviour of the Adler function, extending previous work on the tau hadronic width. We find that the moments can be divided into a small number of classes, whose characteristics depend only on generic features of the moment weight function and Adler function series. Some moments that are commonly employed in alpha_s analyses from tau decays should be avoided because of their perturbative instability. This conclusion is corroborated by a simplified alpha_s extraction from individual moments. Furthermore, under reasonable assumptions for the higher-order behaviour of the perturbative series, fixed-order perturbation theory (FOPT) provides the preferred framework for the renormalization group improvement of all moments that show good perturbative behaviour. Finally, we provide further evidence for the plausibility of the description of the Adler function in terms of a small number of leading renormalon singularities.

To account for non-perturbative effects, non-linear, multi-parameter fits are necessary. We have, therefore, investigated the posterior probability distribution of the model parameters underlying our fits in more detail. We find that OPAL data alone provide only weak constraints on some of the parameters needed to model duality violations, especially in the case of fits involving axial vector channel data, making additional prior assumptions on the expected size of these parameters necessary at present. We provide evidence that this situation could be greatly improved if hadronic spectral functions based on the high-statistics BaBar and Belle data were to be made available.

The investigation of the scalar gluonium correlator is interesting because it carries the quantum numbers of the vacuum and the relevant hadronic current is related to the anomalous trace of the QCD energy-momentum tensor in the chiral limit. After reviewing the purely perturbative corrections known up to next-next-to-leading order, the behaviour of the correlator is studied to all orders by means of the large-beta_0 approximation. Similar to the QCD Adler function, the large-order behaviour is governed by the leading ultraviolet renormalon pole. The structure of infrared renormalon poles, being related to the operator product expansion are also discussed, as well as a low-energy theorem for the correlator that provides a relation to the renormalisation group invariant gluon condensate, and the vacuum matrix element of the trace of the QCD energy-momentum tensor.

Being a determination at low energies, the analysis of hadronic tau decay data provides a rather precise determination of the strong coupling alpha_s after evolving the result to M_Z. At such a level of precision, even small non-perturbative effects become relevant for the central value and error. While those effects had been taken into account in the framework of the operator product expansion, contributions going beyond it, so-called duality violations, have previously been neglected. The following investigation fills this gap through a finite-energy sum rule analysis of tau decay spectra from the OPAL experiment, including duality violations and performing a consistent fit of all appearing QCD parameters. The resulting values for alpha_s(M_tau) are 0.307(19) in fixed-order perturbation theory and 0.322(26) in contour-improved perturbation theory, which translates to the n_f=5 values 0.1169(25) and 0.1187(32) at M_Z, respectively.

We employ a quantitative model in order to accommodate violations of quark-hadron duality, and enforce a consistent treatment of the higher-dimensional contributions of the Operator Product Expansion to our sum rules. Using 1998 OPAL data for the non-strange isovector vector and axial-vector spectral functions, we find the n_f=3 values α_s(m_τ^2)=0.307+-0.019 in fixed-order perturbation theory, and 0.322+-0.026 in contour-improved perturbation theory. Though the operator product expansion is applicable in the calculation of current correlation functions in the Euclidean region, when approaching the Minkowskian domain, violations of quark-hadron duality are expected to occur, due to the presence of bound-state or resonance poles. In QCD finite-energy sum rules, contour integrals in the complex energy plane down to the Minkowskian axis have to be performed, and thus the question arises what the impact of duality violations may be. The structure and possible relevance of duality violations is investigated on the basis of two models: the Coulomb system and a model for light-quark correlators which has already been studied previously. As might yet be naively expected, duality violations are in some sense "maximal" for zero-width bound states and they become weaker for broader resonances whose poles lie further away from the physical axis. Furthermore, to a certain extent, they can be suppressed by choosing appropriate weight functions in the finite-energy sum rules. A simplified Ansatz for including effects of duality violations in phenomenological QCD sum rule analyses is discussed as well.

Recent experimental data for the differential decay distribution of the decay $τ^-\toν_τK_Sπ^-$ by the Belle collaboration are described by a theoretical model which is composed of the contributing vector and scalar form factors $F_+^{Kπ}(s)$ and $F_0^{Kπ}(s)$. Both form factors are constructed such that they fulfil constraints posed by analyticity and unitarity. A good description of the experimental measurement is achieved by incorporating two vector resonances and working with a three-times subtracted dispersion relation in order to suppress higher-energy contributions. The resonance parameters of the charged $K^*(892)$ meson, defined as the pole of $F_+^{Kπ}(s)$ in the complex $s$-plane, can be extracted, with the result $M_{K^*}=892.0 \pm 0.9 $MeV and $Γ_{K^*}=46.2 \pm 0.4 $MeV. Finally, employing the three-subtracted dispersion relation allows to determine the slope and curvature parameters $λ_+^{'}=(24.7\pm 0.8)\cdot 10^{-3}$ and $λ_+^{''}=(12.0\pm 0.2)\cdot 10^{-4}$ of the vector form factor $F_+^{Kπ}(s)$ directly from the data.

The difference between these approaches has evolved into a systematic effect that does not go away as higher orders in the perturbative expansion are added. We attempt to clarify under which circumstances one or the other approach provides a better approximation to the true result. To this end, we propose to describe the Adler function series by a model that includes the exactly known coefficients and theoretical constraints on the large-order behaviour originating from the operator product expansion and the renormalisation group. Within this framework we find that while CIPT is unable to account for the fully resummed series, FOPT smoothly approaches the Borel sum, before the expected divergent behaviour sets in at even higher orders. Employing FOPT up to the fifth order to determine $α_s$ in the $\MSb$ scheme, we obtain $α_s(M_τ)=0.320 {}^{+0.012}_{-0.007}$, corresponding to $α_s(M_Z) = 0.1185 {}^{+0.0014}_{-0.0009}$. Improving this result by including yet higher orders from our model yields $α_s(M_τ)=0.316 \pm 0.006$, which after evolution leads to $α_s(M_Z) = 0.1180 \pm 0.0008$. Our results are lower than previous values obtained from $τ$ decays.

Our fit allows to deduce the total branching fraction B[tau- -> nu_tau K_S pi-] = 0.427 +- 0.024 % by integrating the spectrum, as well as the K^* resonance parameters M_{K^*} = 895.3 +- 0.2 MeV and Gamma_{K^*} = 47.5 +- 0.4 MeV, where the last two errors are statistical only. From our fits, we confirm that the scalar form factor F_0^{K pi}(s) is required to provide a good description, but we were unable to further constrain this contribution. Finally, from our results for the vector form factor F_+^{K pi}(s), we update the corresponding slope and curvature parameters lambda'_+ = (25.2 +- 0.3)*10^{-3} and lambda''_+ = (12.9 +- 0.3)*10^{-4}, respectively.

In this work we push the matching between the QCD operator product expansion (OPE) and resonance chiral theory (RchiT) to order alpha_s. To this end we compute two- and three-point QCD Green functions (GFs) in both theories and compare the results. GFs which are order parameters of chiral symmetry breaking make this matching more transparent and thus we concentrate on those. On the OPE side one needs to calculate the hard-gluon virtual corrections to the quark condensate, and in particular for three-point GFs this computation was hitherto missing. We also discuss the need for including the infinite tower of hadronic states in the hadronic representation of the GF when non-analytic terms such as logarithms are present in the OPE Wilson coefficients.

A very precise determination of V_us can be obtained from the semi-inclusive hadronic decay width of the tau lepton into final states with strangeness. The ratio of the Cabibbo-suppressed and Cabibbo-allowed tau decay widths directly measures (V_us/V_ud)^2, up to very small SU(3)-breaking corrections which can be theoretically estimated with the needed accuracy. Together with previous LEP and CLEO data, the recent measurements by Babar and Belle of some Cabibbo-suppressed tau decays imply V_us= 0.2165 +- 0.0026_exp +- 0.0005_th, which is already competitive with the standard extraction from K_l3 decays. The uncertainty is largely dominated by experimental errors and should be easily reduced with the high statistics of the B factories, providing the most accurate determination of this parameter. A 1% experimental precision on the Cabibbo-suppressed tau decay width would translate into a 0.6% uncertainty on V_us.

With the newly available data sets on hadronic tau decays from the B-factories BABAR and BELLE, and future data from BESIII, precise information on the decay distributions will soon become available. This calls for an improvement of the decay spectra also on the theoretical side. In this work, the distribution function for the decay tau -> nu_tau K pi will be presented with the relevant K pi vector and scalar form factors being calculated in the framework of the resonance chiral theory, also taking into account additional constraints from dispersion relations and short-distances. As a by-product the slope and curvature of the vector form factor F_+^{K pi}(s) are determined to be lambda_+^' = 25.6 10^{-3} and lambda_+^{''} = 1.31 10^{-3} respectively.
From our approach it appears that it should be possible to obtain information on the low lying scalar K_0^*(800) as well as the second vector K^*(1410) resonances from the tau decay data. In particular, the exclusive branching fraction of the scalar component is found to be B[tau -> nu_tau(K pi)_{S-wave}] = (3.88 +- 0.19) 10^{-4}.

Recent experimental improvements on K-decay data allow for a precise extraction of the strangeness-changing scalar K pi form factor and the related strange scalar spectral function. On the basis of this scalar as well as the corresponding pseudoscalar spectral function, the strange quark mass is determined to be m_s(2 GeV) = 92 +- 9 MeV. Further taking into account chiral perturbation theory mass ratios, the light up and down quark masses turn out to be m_u(2 GeV) = 2.7 +- 0.4 MeV as well as m_d(2 GeV) = 4.8 +- 0.5 MeV. As a by-product, we also find a value for the Cabibbo angle |V_{us}| = 0.2236(29) and the ratio of meson decay constants F_K/F_π= 1.203(16). Performing a global average of the strange mass by including extractions from other channels as well as lattice QCD results yields m_s(2 GeV) = 94 +- 6 MeV.

The hadronic decay rate of the tau lepton serves as one of the most precise determinations of the QCD coupling alpha_s. The dominant theoretical source of uncertainty at present resides in the seeming disparity of two approaches to improving the perturbative expansion with the help of the renormalisation group, namely fixed-order and contour-improved perturbation theory. In this work it is demonstrated that in fact both approaches yield compatible results. However, the fixed-order series is found to oscillate around the contour-improved result with an oscillation frequency of approximately six perturbative orders, approaching it until about the 30th order, after which the expansion reveals its asymptotic nature. Additionally, the renormalisation scale and scheme dependencies of the perturbative series for the tau hadronic width are investigated in detail.

The recent update of the strange spectral function and the moments of the invariant mass distribution by the OPAL collaboration from hadronic tau decay data are employed to determine |V_us| as well as m_s. Our result, |V_us|=0.2208\pm0.0034, is competitive to the standard extraction of |V_us| from K_e3 decays and to the new proposals to determine it. Furthermore, the error associated to our determination of |V_us| can be reduced in the future since it is dominated by the experimental uncertainty that will be eventually much improved by the B-factories hadronic tau data. Another improvement that can be performed is the simultaneous fit of both |V_us| and m_s to a set of moments of the hadronic tau decays invariant mass distribution, which will provide even a more accurate determination of both parameters.
