There is a striking and unexplained dearth of brown dwarf companions in close orbits (< 3AU) around stars more massive than the Sun, in stark contrast to the frequency of stellar and planetary companions. Although rare and relatively short-lived, these systems leave detectable evolutionary end points in the form of white dwarf - brown dwarf binaries and these remnants can offer unique insights into the births and deaths of their parent systems. We present the discovery of a close (orbital separation ~ 0.006 AU) substellar companion to a massive white dwarf member of the Praesepe star cluster. Using the cluster age and the mass of the white dwarf we constrain the mass of the white dwarf progenitor star to lie in the range 3.5 - 3.7 Msun (B9). The high mass of the white dwarf means the substellar companion must have been engulfed by the B star's envelope while it was on the late asymptotic giant branch (AGB). Hence, the initial separation of the system was ~2 AU, with common envelope evolution reducing the separation to its current value. The initial and final orbital separations allow us to constrain the combination of the common envelope efficiency (alpha) and binding energy parameters (lambda) for the AGB star to alpha lambda ~3. We examine the various formation scenarios and conclude that the substellar object was most likely to have been captured by the white dwarf progenitor early in the life of the cluster, rather than forming in situ.

We present the results of a photometric and astrometric study of the low mass stellar and substellar population of the young open cluster Blanco 1. We have exploited J band data, obtained recently with the Wide Field Camera (WFCAM) on the United Kingdom InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT), and 10 year old I and z band optical imaging from CFH12k and Canada France Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), to identify 44 candidate low mass stellar and substellar members, in an area of 2 sq. degrees, on the basis of their colours and proper motions. This sample includes five sources which are newly discovered. We also confirm the lowest mass candidate member of Blanco 1 unearthed so far (29MJup). We determine the cluster mass function to have a slope of alpha=+0.93, assuming it to have a power law form. This is high, but nearly consistent with previous studies of the cluster (to within the errors), and also that of its much better studied northern hemisphere analogue, the Pleiades.

We present a near-infrared photometric search for unresolved substellar companions and debris disks around white dwarfs in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Large Area Survey. We cross-correlate the SDSS DR4 and McCook & Sion catalogues of white dwarfs with the UKIDSS DR8 producing 3109 and 163 unique matches respectively. Cooling models are fitted to the optical photometry of a subsample of DA white dwarfs and extended to the near-infrared. A comparison is then made with the observed photometry to identify those stars with a near-infrared excess consistent with the presence of a cool companion or debris disk. Where present, we have estimated the approximate spectral type of any putative companion, or an upper limit on the temperature of a debris disk. In total we identify 14-16 new candidate white dwarf + very low mass stellar systems, 9-11 candidate white dwarf + brown dwarf systems, and 3 candidate white dwarf + debris disks. We place lower limits on the unresolved (<2") companions to all DA white dwarfs and thus assess the sensitivity of UKIDSS to such objects. We use this result to estimate unresolved binary fractions of f(WD+dL)>0.4+/-0.3%, f(WD+dT)>0.2% and f(WD+BD)>0.5+/-0.3%.

Brown dwarf companions to white dwarfs are rare, but recent infra-red surveys are slowly reveal- ing examples. Twenty five DA white dwarfs were identified as having photometric excesses indicative of a low mass companion, with 8-10 of these having a predicted mass in the range asso- ciated with brown dwarfs. The results of this survey show that the unresolved (< 2") brown dwarf companion fraction to DA white dwarfs is 0.3 \leq fWD+BD \leq 1.3%.

We present Spitzer observations at [3.6] and [4.5] microns together with the methane short (1.58\,\mic)-methane long (1.69\,\mic) colour for 3 cool dwarfs in the Pleiades, PLZJ23, PLZJ93 and PLZJ100. We determine the effective temperatures of PLZJ23 and PLZJ93 to be ~1200 and ~1100 K. From the broadband photometry we place an upper limit of 1100 K on the effective temperature of PLZJ100 but lack the data required to determine the value more precisely. These temperatures are in the T dwarf regime yet the methane colours indicate no methane is present.We attribute this to youth/low gravity in line with theoretical expectations. However, we find even less methane is present than predicted by the models. PLZJ23 and PLZJ93 are also very bright in the [3.6] micron waveband (PLZJ100 is not measured) compared to field brown dwarfs which can also be explained by this lack of methane. The definition of the T spectral class is the appearance of methane absorption, so strictly, via this definition, PLZJ93 and PLZJ100 cannot be described as T dwarfs. The colours of these two objects are, however, not compatible with those of L dwarfs. Thus we have a classification problem and cannot assign these objects a (photometric) spectral type.

Presented are the results of a large and deep optical-near-infrared multi-epoch survey of the Praesepe open star cluster using data from the UKIDSS Galactic Clusters Survey. Multiple colour magnitude diagrams were used to select potential members and proper motions were used to assign levels of membership probability. From our sample, 145 objects were designated as high probability members (p >= 0.6) with most of these having been found by previous surveys although 14 new cluster members are also identified. Our membership assignment is restricted to the bright sample of objects (Z < 18). From the fainter sample, 39 candidates were found from an examination of multiple colour magnitude plots. Of these, 2 have small but significant membership probabilities. Finally, using theoretical models, cluster luminosity and mass functions were plotted with the later being fitted with a power law of alpha = 1.11 +/- 0.37 for the mass range 0.6 to 0.125 Msun and an assumed cluster age of 500 Myrs in the UKIDSS Z photometric band. Likewise taking an assumed cluster age of 1 Gyr we find alpha = 1.10 +/- 0.37. Similar values were also found for the J and K bands. These results compare favourably with the result of Kraus & Hillenbrand (2007) (alpha = 1.4 +/- 0.2) but are significantly lower than that of the more recent study conducted by Boudreault et al. (2009) (alpha = 1.8 +/- 0.1).

The spectral type of the secondary was determined using standard spectral indices for late L and T dwarfs. The projected orbital separation of the binary is 55AU, and so it becomes only the second known wide WD+dL binary to be found after GD165AB. This object could potentially be used as a benchmark for testing substellar evolutionary models at intermediate to older ages.

We present the results of a high resolution optical spectroscopic study of nine white dwarf candidate members of Praesepe undertaken with the VLT and UVES. We find, contrary to a number of previous studies, that WD0836+201 (LB390, EG59) and WD0837+199 (LB393, EG61) are magnetic and non-magnetic white dwarfs respectively. Subsequently, we determine the radial velocities for the eight non-magnetic degenerates and provide compelling evidence that WD0837+185 is a radial velocity variable and possibly a double-degenerate system. We also find that our result for WD0837+218, in conjunction with its projected spatial location and position in initial mass-final mass space, argues it is more likely to be a field star than a cluster member. After eliminating these two white dwarfs, and WD0836+199 which has no clean SDSS photometry, we use the remaining 5 stars to substantiate modern theoretical mass-radius relations for white dwarfs. In light of our new results we re-examine the white dwarf members of Praesepe and use them to further constrain the initial mass-final mass relation. We find a a near monotonic IFMR, which can still be adequately represented by simple linear function with only one outlier which may have formed from a blue straggler star.

By using images taken with WFCAM on UKIRT and SofI on the NTT and combining them with 2MASS we have measured proper motions for 126 L and T dwarfs in the dwarf archive. Two of these L dwarfs appear to have M dwarf common proper motion companions, and 2 also appear to be high velocity dwarfs, indicating possible membership of the thick disc. We have also compared the motion of these 126 objects to that of numerous moving groups, and have identified new members of the Hyades, Ursa Major and Pleiades moving groups. These new objects, as well as those identified in Jameson et al. (2008) have allowed us to refine the L dwarf sequence for Ursa Major that was defined by Jameson et al. (2008).

We present near-infrared (1.15-2.50 microns) medium-resolution (R = 1700) spectroscopy of a sample of 23 brown dwarf candidates in the young Upper Sco association. We confirm membership of 21 brown dwarfs based on their spectral shape, comparison with field dwarfs, and presence of weak gravity-sensitive features. Their spectral types range from M8 to L2 with an uncertainty of a subclass, suggesting effective temperatures between 2700 and 1800 K with an uncertainty up to 300 K and masses in the 30-8 Mjup range. Among the non-members, we have uncovered a field L2 dwarf at a distance of 120-140 pc, assuming that it is single. The success rate of our photometric selection based on five photometric passbands and complemented partly by proper motion is over 90%, a very promising result for future studies of the low-mass star and brown dwarf populations in young open clusters by the UKIDSS Galactic Cluster Survey. We observe a large dispersion in the magnitude versus spectral-type relation which is likely the result of the combination of several effects including age dispersion, extent and depth of the association, a high degree of multiplicity and the occurrence of disks.

(abridged) We report the discovery of a very cool brown dwarf, ULAS J003402.77-005206.7 (ULAS J0034-00), identified in UKIDSS DR1. We provide optical, near-infrared, and mid-infrared photometry of the source, and two near-infrared spectra. Comparing the spectral energy distribution of ULAS J0034-00 to that of the T8 brown dwarf 2MASS J0415-09, the latest-type and coolest well-studied brown dwarf to date, with Teff~750 K, we find evidence that ULAS J0034-00 is significantly cooler. First, the measured values of the near-infrared absorption spectral indices imply a later classification, of T8.5. Second, the H-[4.49] colour provides an empirical estimate of the temperature of 540<Teff<660 K (+/-2sig range). Third, the J- and H-band peaks are somewhat narrower in ULAS J0034-00, and detailed comparison against spectral models calibrated to 2MASS J0415-09 yields an estimated temperature lower by 60-120 K relative to 2MASS J0415-09 i.e. 630<Teff<690 K (+/-2sig), and lower gravity or higher metallicity according to the degenerate combination -0.5<delta(log g-2[m/H])<-0.25 (+/-2sig). Combining these estimates, and considering systematics, it is likely the temperature lies in the range 600<Teff<700 K. Despite the low inferred Teff we find no evidence for strong absorption by NH3 over the wavelength range 1.51-1.56 um. Evolutionary models imply that the mass and age are in the ranges 15-36 M(Jup) and 0.5-8 Gyr, respectively. The measured proper motion, of (0.37+/-0.07)arcsec/yr, combined with the photometrically estimated distance of 14-22 pc, implies a tangential velocity of ~30 km/s. ULAS J0034-00 is significantly bluer than 2MASS J0415-09 in Y-J, so future searches should allow for the possibility that cooler T dwarfs are bluer still.

We present the results of a deep wide-field near-infrared survey of 12 square degrees of the Pleiades conducted as part of the UKIDSS Deep Infrared Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey (GCS). We have extracted over 340 high probability proper motion members down to 0.03 solar masses using a combination of UKIDSS photometry and proper motion measurements obtained by cross-correlating the GCS with data from the Two Micron All Sky Survey (2MASS), the Isaac Newton (INT) and the Canada-France-Hawai'i (CFHT) telescopes. Additionally, we have unearthed 73 new candidate brown dwarf members on the basis of five band UKIDSS photometry alone. We have identified 23 substellar multiple system candidates out of 63 candidate brown dwarfs from the (Y-K,Y) and (J-K,J) colour-magnitude diagrams, yielding a binary frequency of 28-44% in the 0.075-0.030 Msun mass range. Our estimate is three times larger than the binary fractions reported from high-resolution imaging surveys of field ultracool dwarfs and Pleiades brown dwarfs. However, it is marginally consistent with our earlier ``peculiar'' photometric binary fraction of 50+/-10% presented in Pinfield et al. (2003), in good agreement with the 32-45% binary fraction derived from the recent Monte-Carlo simulations of Maxted & Jeffries (2005) and compatible with the 26+/-10% frequency recently estimated by Basri & Reiners (2006). A tentative estimate of the mass ratios from photometry alone seems to support the hypothesis that binary brown dwarfs tend to reside in near equal-mass ratio systems. (abridged)

We present eight new T4.5-T7.5 dwarfs identified in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) Data Release 1 (DR1). We present eight new T4.5-T7.5 dwarfs identified in the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey (LAS) Data Release 1 (DR1). In addition we have recovered the T4.5 dwarf SDSS J020742.91+000056.2 and the T8.5 dwarf ULAS J003402.77-005206.7. Photometric candidates were picked up in two-colour diagrams over 190 square degrees (DR1) and selected in at least two filters. All candidates exhibit near-infrared spectra with strong methane and water absorption bands characteristic of T dwarfs and the derived spectral types follow the unified scheme of Burgasser et al. (2006). We have found 6 new T4.5-T5.5 dwarfs, one T7 dwarf, one T7.5 dwarf, and recovered a T4.5 dwarf and a T8.5 dwarf. We provide distance estimates which lie in the 15-85 pc range; the T7.5 and T8.5 dwarfs are probably within 25 pc of the Sun. We conclude with a discussion of the number of T dwarfs expected after completion of the LAS, comparing these initial results to theoretical simulations.

L and T dwarfs in the Hyades and Ursa Major moving groups

Abstract:
We have used the moving cluster method to identify three L dwarfs and one T dwarf in the Ursa Major/Sirius moving group (age 400 Myr). Five L dwarfs and two T dwarfs are found to belong to the Hyades moving group (age 625 Myr). These L and T dwarfs define 400- and 625- Myr empirical isochrones, assuming that they have the same age. Moving group membership does not guarantee coevality.

Proper motions are computed for all candidate members and compared to the background field objects to further refine the sample. We recover all known cluster members within the area of our survey. In addition, we have discovered 9 new candidate brown dwarf cluster members. The 7 faintest candidates have red Z-J colours and show blue near-infrared colours. These are consistent with being L and T-type Pleiads. Theoretical models predict their masses to be around 11 Jupiter masses.

The UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) is a set of five large near-infrared surveys, covering a complementary range of areas, depths, and Galactic latitudes. The UKIDSS Second Data Release (DR2) includes the First Data Release (DR1), with minor improvements, plus new data for the LAS, GPS, GCS, and DXS, from observations made over 2006 May through July (when the UDS was unobservable). DR2 was staged in two parts. The first part excluded the GPS, and took place on 2007 March 1. The GPS was released on 2007 April 12. DR2 includes 282 sq. degs of multicolour data to (Vega) K=18, complete in the full
YJHK set for the LAS, 57 sq. degs in the ZYJHK set for the GCS, and 236 sq. degs in the JHK set for the GPS. DR2 includes nearly 7 sq. degs of deep JK data (DXS, UDS) to an average depth K=21. In addition the release includes a comparable quantity of data where coverage of the filter set for any survey is incomplete. We document changes that have occurred since DR1 to the pipeline, calibration, and archive procedures. The two most noteworthy changes are presentation of the data in a single database (compared to two previously), and provision of additional error flags for detected sources, flagging potentially spurious artifacts, corrupted data and suspected cross-talk sources. We summarise the contents of each of the surveys in terms of filters, areas, and depths.

We report on the first ultracool dwarf discoveries from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Large Area Survey Early Data Release (LAS EDR), in particular the discovery of T dwarfs which are fainter and more distant than those found using the 2MASS and SDSS surveys. We aim to show that our methodologies for searching the ~27 sq degs of the LAS EDR are successful for finding both L and T dwarfs $via$ cross-correlation with the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) DR4 release. While the area searched so far is small, the numbers of objects found shows great promise for near-future releases of the LAS and great potential for finding large numbers of such dwarfs. Ultracool dwarfs are selected by combinations of their YJH(K) UKIDSS colours and SDSS DR4 z-J and i-z colours, or, lower limits on these red optical/infrared colours in the case of DR4 dropouts. After passing visual inspection tests, candidates have been followed up by methane imaging and spectroscopy at 4m and 8m-class facilities. Our main result is the discovery following CH4 imaging and spectroscopy of a T4.5 dwarf, ULASJ 1452+0655, lying ~80pc distant. A further T dwarf candidate, ULASJ 1301+0023, has very similar CH4 colours but has not yet been confirmed spectroscopically. We also report on the identification of a brighter L0 dwarf, and on the selection of a list of LAS objects designed to probe for T-like dwarfs to the survey J-band limit. Our findings indicate that the combination of the UKIDSS LAS and SDSS surveys provide an excellent tool for identifying L and T dwarfs down to much fainter limits than previously possible. Our discovery of one confirmed and one probable T dwarf in the EDR is consistent with expectations from the previously measured T dwarf density on the sky.

The First Data Release (DR1) of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) took place on 2006 July 21. UKIDSS is a set of five large near-infrared surveys, covering a complementary range of areas, depths, and Galactic latitudes. DR1 is the first large release of survey-quality data from UKIDSS and includes 320 sq degs of multicolour data to (Vega) K=18, complete (depending on the survey) in three to five bands from the set ZYJHK, together with 4 sq degs of deep JK data to an average depth K=21. In addition the release includes a similar quantity of data with incomplete filter coverage. In JHK, in regions of low extinction, the photometric uniformity of the calibration is better than 0.02 mag. in each band. The accuracy of the calibration in ZY remains to be quantified, and the same is true of JHK in regions of high extinction. The median image FWHM across the dataset is 0.82 arcsec. We describe changes since the Early Data Release in the implementation, pipeline and calibration, quality control, and archive procedures. We provide maps of the areas surveyed, and summarise the contents of each of the five surveys in terms of filters, areas, and depths. DR1 marks completion of 7 per cent of the UKIDSS 7-year goals.

We present first results from a deep (J = 18.7), wide-field (6.5 square degrees) infrared (ZYJHK) survey in the Upper Sco association conducted within the science verification phase of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey Galactic Cluster Survey (GCS). Cluster members define a sequence well separated from field stars in the (Z-J,Z) colour-magnitude diagram. We have selected a total of 164 candidates with J = 10.5-18.7 mag from the (Z-J,Z) and (Y-J,Y) diagrams. We further investigated the location of those candidates in the other colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams to weed out contaminants. The cross-correlation of the GCS catalogue with the 2MASS database confirms the membership of 116 photometric candidates down to 20 Jupiter masses as they lie within a 2 sigma circle centred on the association mean motion. The final list of cluster members contains 129 sources with masses between 0.3 and 0.007 Msun. We extracted a dozen new low-mass brown dwarfs below 20 Mjup, the limit of previous surveys in the region. Finally, we have derived the mass function in Upper Sco over the 0.3-0.01 Msun mass range, best fit by a single segment with a slope of index alpha = 0.6+/-0.1, in agreement with previous determination in open clusters.

We present the results of a 9.3 square degree infrared (ZYJHK) survey in the Upper Scorpius association extracted from the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Galactic Cluster Survey Early Data Release. We have selected a total of 112 candidates from the ($Z-J$,$Z$) colour-magnitude diagram over the Z=12.5-20.5 magnitude range, corresponding to M = 0.25-0.01 Msun at an age of 5 Myr and a distance of 145 pc. Additional photometry in J and K filters revealed most of them as reddened stars, leaving 32 possible members. Among them, 15 have proper motion consistent with higher mass members from Hipparcos and optical spectra with strong Halpha in emission and weak gravity features. We have also extracted two lower mass candidate members for which no optical spectra are in hand. Three members exhibit strong Halpha equivalent widths (>20 Angstroms), suggesting that they could still undergo accretion whereas two other dwarfs show signs of chromospheric activity. The likelihood of the binarity of a couple of new stellar and substellar members is discussed as well.

We argue on the basis of astrometric and spectroscopic data that the ultramassive white dwarf GD50 is associated with the star formation event that created the Pleiades and is possibly a former member of this cluster. Its cooling age (~60Myrs) is consistent with it having evolved essentially as a single star from a progenitor with a mass M>6Msun so we find no need to invoke a white dwarf-white dwarf binary merger scenario to account for its existence. This result may represent the first direct observational evidence that single star evolution can produce white dwarfs with M>1.1Msun, as predicted by some stellar evolutionary theories. On the basis of its tangential velocity we also provisionally identify the ultramassive (M~1.2Msun) white dwarf PG0136+251 as being related to the Pleiades. These findings may help to alleviate the difficulties in reconciling the observed number of hot nearby ultramassive white dwarfs with the smaller number predicted by binary evolution models under the assumption that they are the products of white dwarf mergers.

We describe the goals, design, implementation, and initial progress of the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS), a seven year sky survey which began in May 2005, using the UKIRT Wide Field Camera. It is a portfolio of five survey components covering various combinations of the filter set ZYJHK and H_2. The Large Area Survey, the Galactic Clusters Survey, and the Galactic Plane Survey cover approximately 7000 square degrees to a depth of K~18; the Deep Extragalactic Survey covers 35 square degrees to K~21, and the Ultra Deep Survey covers 0.77 square degrees to K~23. Summed together UKIDSS is 12 times larger in effective volume than the 2MASS survey. The prime aim of UKIDSS is to provide a long term astronomical legacy database; the design is however driven by a series of specific goals -- for example to find the nearest and faintest sub-stellar objects; to discover Population II brown dwarfs, if they exist; to determine the substellar mass function; to break the z=7 quasar barrier; to determine the epoch of re-ionisation; to measure the growth of structure from z=3 to the present day; to determine the epoch of spheroid formation; and to map the Milky Way through the dust, to several kpc. The survey data are being uniformly processed, and released in stages through the WFCAM Science Archive (WSA : http://surveys.roe.ac.uk/wsa). Before the formal survey began, UKIRT and the UKIDSS consortium collaborated in obtaining and analysing a series of small science verification (SV) projects to complete the commissioning of the camera. We show some results from these SV projects in order to demonstrate the likely power of the eventual complete survey. Finally, using the data from the First Data Release we assess how well UKIDSS is meeting its design targets so far.

This paper defines the UKIRT Infrared Deep Sky Survey (UKIDSS) Early Data Release (EDR). UKIDSS is a set of five large near-infra-red surveys defined by Lawrence et al. (2006), being undertaken with the UK Infra-red Telescope (UKIRT) Wide Field Camera (WFCAM). The programme began in May 2005 and has an expected duration of seven years. Each survey uses some or all of the broadband filter complement ZYJHK. The EDR is the first public release of data to the European Southern Observatory (ESO) community. All worldwide releases occur after a delay of 18 months from the ESO release. The EDR provides a small sample dataset, ~50 sq.deg (about 1% of the whole of UKIDSS), that is a lower limit to the expected quality of future survey data releases. In addition, an EDR+ dataset contains all EDR data plus extra data of similar quality, but for areas not observed in all of the required filters (amounting to ~220 sq.deg). The first large data release, DR1, will occur in mid-2006. We provide details of the observational implementation, the data reduction, the astrometric and photometric calibration, and the quality control procedures. We summarise the data coverage and quality (seeing, ellipticity, photometricity, depth) for each survey and give a brief guide to accessing the images and catalogues from the WFCAM Science Archive.

New Praesepe white dwarfs and the initial mass-final mass relation

We report the spectroscopic confirmation of four further white dwarf members of Praesepe. This brings the total number of confirmed white dwarf members to eleven making this the second largest collection of these objects in an open cluster identified to date. This number is consistent with the high mass end of the initial mass function of Praesepe being Salpeter in form. Furthermore, it suggests that the bulk of Praesepe white dwarfs did not gain a substantial recoil kick velocity from possible asymmetries in their loss of mass during the asymptotic giant branch phase of evolution. By comparing our estimates of the effective temperatures and the surface gravities of WD0833+194, WD0840+190, WD0840+205 and WD0843+184 to modern theoretical evolutionary tracks we have derived their masses to be in the range 0.72-0.76Msun and their cooling ages \~300Myrs. For an assumed cluster age of 625+/-50Myrs the infered progenitor masses are between 3.3-3.5Msun. Examining these new data in the context of the initial mass-final mass relation we find that it can be adequately represented by a linear function (a0=0.289+/-0.051, a1=0.133+/-0.015) over the initial mass range 2.7Msun to 6Msun. Assuming an extrapolation of this relation to larger initial masses is valid and adopting a maximum white dwarf mass of 1.3Msun, our results support a minimum mass for core-collapse supernovae progenitors in the range ~6.8-8.6Msun.

We present the results of a survey of the Coma Berenices open star cluster (Melotte 111), undertaken using proper motions from the USNO-B1.0 and photometry from the 2MASS Point Source catalogues. We have identified 60 new candidate members with masses in the range 1.007<M<$0.269M_solar. For each we have estimated a membership probability by extracting control clusters from the proper motion vector diagram. All 60 are found to have greater than 60 per cent probability of being clusters more than doubling the number of known cluster members. The new luminosity function for the cluster peaks at bright magnitudes, but is rising at K~12, indicating that it is likely lower mass members may exist. The mass function also supports this hypothesis.

Praesepe and the seven white dwarfs

We report the discovery, from our preliminary survey of the Praesepe open cluster, of two new spectroscopically confirmed white dwarf candidate members. We report the discovery, from our preliminary survey of the Praesepe open cluster, of two new spectroscopically confirmed white dwarf candidate members. We derive the effective temperatures and surface gravities of WD0837+218 and WD0837+185 (LB5959) to be 17845 +555 -565K and log g = 8.48 +0.07 -0.08 and 14170 +1380 -1590K and log g =8.46 +0.15 -0.16 respectively. Using theoretical evolutionary tracks we estimate the masses and cooling ages of these white dwarfs to be 0.92+/-0.05Msun and 280 +40 -30Myrs and 0.90+/-0.10Msun and 500 +170 -100Myrs respectively. Adopting reasonable values for the cluster age we infer the progenitors of WD0837+218 and WD0837+185 had masses of 2.6 < M < Mcrit Msun and 2.4 < M < 3.5Msun respectively, where Mcrit is the maximum mass of a white dwarf progenitor. We briefly discuss these findings in the context of the observed deficit of white dwarfs in open clusters and the initial mass-final-mass relationship.

We present near infrared J-, H- and K-band photometry and optical spectroscopy of low-mass star and brown dwarf (BD) candidates in the Pleiades and Praesepe open clusters. We find that Pleiades stars with K=10.5--13 are rather redder than the NextGen isochrones. We also identify this effect amongst alphaPer sources from the literature, but find no evidence of it for field stars from the literature. It is possible that the I-K colour of youthful stars is affected by the presence of magnetic activity. In the 2-colour diagram we find no colour change across the "M dwarf gap" (which would be indicative of dust formation). For Teff=2800--3150K, the colours of Praesepe and Pleiades sources differ, which may result from gravity sensitive molecular opacities. Praesepe sources cooler than 2500K agree with the dusty models, but Pleiades sources agree with the NextGen models down to 2000K. It is possible that dust formation does not begin until lower Teffs in sources with lower surface gravities. We also identify unresolved binaries in both clusters, and estimate mass ratios (q) for Pleiades BDs. Most of these have q>0.7, however, 3/18 appear to have lower q values. We determine the binary fraction (BF) for numerous mass ranges in each cluster, and find that it is generally rising towards lower masses. We find a BD BF of 50(+11/-10)%. We also find some evidence suggesting that the BF-q distribution is flat for 0.5-0.35Mo, in contrast to solar type stars.

We use these data as constraints to photoionization models to derive limits on the oxygen abundance. We find that PN G 135.9+55.9 has an oxygen abundance less than 1/50 of the solar value. We also derive Ne/O = 0.5 +/- 0.3, S/O < 0.094, and Ar/O < 0.23. Although the value of Ne/O is nominally high, it need not imply that the progenitor of PN G 135.9+55.9 converted any of its initial oxygen abundance to neon. The helium abundance appears to be very low, He/H ~ 0.08, but a precise determination will require a much more detailed study. We find that Ha/Hb is lower than expected and perhaps variable, a finding for which we have no clear explanation.

This effect is not predicted by the current generation of low mass stellar/substellar evolutionary models. If our interpretation is correct then this result has important implications for investigations concerned with the mass functions of star forming regions and young open star clusters. For example, it suggests that some brown dwarfs have higher masses than previously thought.

We present the results of multiple simulations of open clusters, modelling the dynamics of a population of brown dwarf members. We consider the effects of a large range of primordial binary populations, including the possibilities of having brown dwarf members contained within a binary system. We also examine the effects of various cluster diameters and masses. Our examination of a population of wide binary systems containing brown dwarfs, reveals evidence for exchange reactions whereby the brown dwarf is ejected from the system and replaced by a heavier main-sequence star. We find that there exists the possibility of hiding a large fraction of the brown dwarfs contained within the primordial binary population. We conclude that it is probable that the majority of brown dwarfs are contained within primordial binary systems which then hides a large proportion of them from detection.

We present new spectroscopic and photometric measurements of the white dwarfs LHS 3250 and WD 0346+246. Along with F351-50, these white dwarfs are the coolest ones known, all with effective temperatures below 4000 K. Their membership in the Galactic halo population is discussed, and detailed comparisons of all three objects with new atmosphere models are presented. The new models consider the effects of mixed H/He atmospheres and indicate that WD 0346+246 and F351-50 have predominantly helium atmospheres with only traces of hydrogen. LHS 3250 may be a double degenerate whose average radiative temperature is between 2000 and 4000 K, but the new models fail to explain this object.

We present intermediate and low resolution optical spectroscopy (650-915 nm) of seven faint, very red objects (20 > I >= 17.8, I-Z >= 0.5) discovered in a CCD-based IZ survey covering an area of 1 sq. deg in the central region of the Pleiades open cluster. The observed spectra show that these objects are very cool dwarfs, having spectral types in the range M6-M9. Five out of the seven objects can be considered as Pleiades members on the basis of their radial velocities, Halpha emission and other gravity sensitive atomic features like the NaI doublet at 818.3 and 819.5 nm. According to current evolutionary models the masses of these new objects range from roughly 80 MJup for the hottest in the sample down to 45 MJup for Roque 4, the coolest and faintest confirmed member. These observations prove that the cloud fragmentation process extends well into the brown dwarf realm, suggesting a rise in the initial mass function below the substellar limit.
