Measurement of $CP$ asymmetries in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 γ$ decays at Belle II

Abstract: We report measurements of time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 γ$ decays based on a data sample of $(388\pm6)\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector. The Belle II experiment operates at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure decay-time distributions to determine $CP$-violating parameters $S$ and $C$. We det… ▽ More We report measurements of time-dependent $CP$ asymmetries in $B^0 \to K^0_S π^0 γ$ decays based on a data sample of $(388\pm6)\times10^6$ $B\bar{B}$ events collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle II detector. The Belle II experiment operates at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+e^-$ collider. We measure decay-time distributions to determine $CP$-violating parameters $S$ and $C$. We determine these parameters for two ranges of $K^0_S π^0$ invariant mass: $m(K^0_S π^0)\in (0.8, 1.0)$ $GeV/c^2$, which is dominated by $B^0 \to K^{*0} (\to K^0_S π^0) γ$ decays, and a complementary region $m(K^0_S π^0)\in (0.6, 0.8)\cup(1.0, 1.8)$ $GeV/c^2$. Measurement of the integrated luminosity of data samples collected during 2019-2022 by the Belle II experiment

Abstract: A series of data samples was collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider from March 2019 to June 2022. We determine the integrated luminosities of these data samples using three distinct methodologies involving Bhabha ($e^+e^- \to e^+e^-(nγ)$), digamma ($e^+e^- \to γγ(nγ)$), and dimuon ($e^+e^- \to μ^+ μ^- (nγ)$) events. The analysis uses a multi-period selection of inve… ▽ More The PROSPECT experiment is designed to perform precise searches for antineutrino disappearance at short distances (7 - 9~m) from compact nuclear reactor cores. This Letter reports results from a new neutrino oscillation analysis performed using the complete data sample from the PROSPECT-I detector operated at the High Flux Isotope Reactor in 2018. The analysis uses a multi-period selection of inverse beta decay neutrino interactions with reduced backgrounds and enhanced statistical power to set limits on electron-flavor disappearance caused by mixing with sterile neutrinos with 0.2 - 20 eV$^2$ mass splittings. Inverse beta decay positron energy spectra from six different reactor-detector distance ranges are found to be statistically consistent with one another, as would be expected in the absence of sterile neutrino oscillations. The data excludes at 95% confidence level the existence of sterile neutrinos in regions above 3~eV$^2$ previously unexplored by terrestrial experiments, including all space below 10~eV$^2$ suggested by the recently strengthened Gallium Anomaly. The best-fit point of the Neutrino-4 reactor experiment's claimed observation of short-baseline oscillation is ruled out at more than five standard deviations. △ Less

The event yields are extracted… ▽ More We present measurements of the branching fractions of eight $\overline B{}^0\to D^{(*)+} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$, $B^{-}\to D^{(*)0} K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ decay channels. The results are based on data from SuperKEKB electron-positron collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $362~\text{fb}^{-1}$. The event yields are extracted from fits to the distributions of the difference between expected and observed $B$ meson energy, and are efficiency-corrected as a function of $m(K^-K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ and $m(D^{(*)}K^{(*)0}_{(S)})$ in order to avoid dependence on the decay model. These results include the first observation of $\overline B{}^0\to D^+K^-K_S^0$, $B^-\to D^{*0}K^-K_S^0$, and $\overline B{}^0\to D^{*+}K^-K_S^0$ decays and a significant improvement in the precision of the other channels compared to previous measurements. The helicity-angle distributions and the invariant mass distributions of the $K^- K^{(*)0}_{(S)}$ systems are compatible with quasi-two-body decays via a resonant transition with spin-parity $J^P=1^-$ for the $K^-K_S^0$ systems and $J^P= 1^+$ for the $K^-K^{*0}$ systems. With over 3.6 million signal candidates, an optimized candidate selection, improved treatment of backgrounds and efficiencies, refined energy calibration, and an energy response model for the capture-on-hydrogen sensitive region, the relative $\overlineν_{e}$ rates and energy spectra variation among the near and far detectors gives $\mathrm{sin}^22θ_{13} = 0.0759_{-0.0049}^{+0.0050}$ and $Δm^2_{32} = (2.72^{+0.14}_{-0.15})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ assuming the normal neutrino mass ordering, and $Δm^2_{32} = (-2.83^{+0.15}_{-0.14})\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ for the inverted neutrino mass ordering. This estimate of $\sin^2 2θ_{13}$ is consistent with and essentially independent from the one obtained using the capture-on-gadolinium sample at Daya Bay. The combination of these two results yields $\mathrm{sin}^22θ_{13}= 0.0833\pm0.0022$, which represents an 8% relative improvement in precision regarding the Daya Bay full 3158-day capture-on-gadolinium result. △ Less

Abstract: We report the result of a search for the rare decay $B^{0} \to γγ$ using a combined dataset of $753\times10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle experiment and $387\times10^{6}$ $B\bar{B}$ pairs collected by the Belle II experiment from decays of the $\rm Υ(4S)$ resonance produced in $e^{+}e^{-}$ collisions. It provides a stringent test of the light-lepton universality, translating to a ratio of the couplings of the muon and electron to the $W$ boson in $τ$ decays of $0.9974 \pm 0.0019$, in agreement with the standard model expectation of unity. △ Less

Abstract: This Letter presents results of a search for the mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with three active neutrinos based on the full data sample of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, collected during 3158 days of detector operation, which contains $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ reactor \anue candidates identified as inverse beta-decay interactions followed by neutron-capture on gadolinium. The analysis… ▽ More This Letter presents results of a search for the mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with three active neutrinos based on the full data sample of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment, collected during 3158 days of detector operation, which contains $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ reactor \anue candidates identified as inverse beta-decay interactions followed by neutron-capture on gadolinium. The analysis benefits from a doubling of the statistics of our previous result and from improvements of several important systematic uncertainties. No significant oscillation due to mixing of a sub-eV sterile neutrino with active neutrinos was found. Exclusion limits are set by both Feldman-Cousins and CLs methods. Light sterile neutrino mixing with $\sin^2 2θ_{14} \gtrsim 0.01$ can be excluded at 95\% confidence level in the region of $0.01$ eV$^2 \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.1 $ eV$^2$. This result represents the world-leading constraints in the region of $2 \times 10^{-4}$ eV$^2 \lesssim |Δm^{2}_{41}| \lesssim 0.2 $ eV$^2$. △ Less

First measurement of the yield of $^8$He isotopes produced in liquid scintillator by cosmic-ray muons at Daya Bay

Abstract: Daya Bay presents the first measurement of cosmogenic $^8$He isotope production in liquid scintillator, using an innovative method for identifying cascade decays of $^8$He and its child isotope, $^8$Li. We also measure the production yield of $^9$Li isotopes using well-established methodology. It replaces the results of previous attempts to determine the ratio of $^8$He to $^9$Li production that yielded a wide range of limits from 0 to 30\%. For the quantum mechanics-based approach (QM-NSI), the constraints on the CC-NSI parameters $ε_{eα}$ and $ε_{eα}^{s}$ are extracted with and without the assumption that the effects of the new physics are the same in the production and detection processes, respectively. The approach based on the weak effective field theory (WEFT-NSI) deals with four types of CC-NSI represented by the parameters $[\varepsilon_{X}]_{eα}$. For both approaches, the results for the CC-NSI parameters are shown for cases with various fixed values of the CC-NSI and the Dirac CP-violating phases, and when they are allowed to vary freely. We find that constraints on the QM-NSI parameters $ε_{eα}$ and $ε_{eα}^{s}$ from the Daya Bay experiment alone can reach the order $\mathcal{O}(0.01)$ for the former and $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ for the latter, while for WEFT-NSI parameters $[\varepsilon_{X}]_{eα}$, we obtain $\mathcal{O}(0.1)$ for both cases. △ Less

The ratio of branching fractions is extracted in a simultaneous fit to two signal-discriminating variables in both channels and yields $R(D^{*}) = 0.262~_{-0.039}^{+0.041}(\mathrm{stat})~_{-0.032}^{+0.035}(\mathrm{syst})$. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying $B$ meson in $Υ(4S) \to B\kern 0.18em\overline{\kern -0.18em B}{}$ events to suppress background from other decays of the signal $B$ ca… ▽ More We search for the rare decay $B^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}ν\barν$ in a $362\ \rm{fb}^{-1}$ sample of electron-positron collisions at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance collected with the Belle II detector at the SuperKEKB collider. We use the inclusive properties of the accompanying $B$ meson in $Υ(4S) \to B\kern 0.18em\overline{\kern -0.18em B}{}$ events to suppress background from other decays of the signal $B$ candidate and light-quark pair production. We validate the measurement with an auxiliary analysis based on a conventional hadronic reconstruction of the accompanying $B$ meson. For background suppression, we exploit distinct signal features using machine learning methods tuned with simulated data. The signal-reconstruction efficiency and background suppression are validated through various control channels. The branching fraction is extracted in a maximum likelihood fit. Our inclusive and hadronic analyses yield consistent results for the $B^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}ν\barν$ branching fraction of $\left[2.7\pm 0.5(\mathrm{stat})\pm 0.5(\mathrm{syst})\right] \times 10^{-5}$ and $\left[1.1^{+0.9}_{-0.8}(\mathrm{stat}){}^{+0.8}_{-0.5}(\mathrm{syst})\right] \times 10^{-5}$, respectively. Combining the results, we determine the branching fraction of the decay $B^{+}\rightarrow K^{+}ν\barν$ to be $\left[2.3 \pm 0.5(\mathrm{stat})^{+0.5}_{-0.4}(\mathrm{syst})\right]\times 10^{-5}$, providing the first evidence for this decay at $3.5$ standard deviations. First Measurement of $R(X_{τ/\ell})$ as an Inclusive Test of the $b \to c τν$ Anomaly

We observe no evidence for a signal and set exclusion limits at 90% confidence level on the product of cross section and branching fraction into $τ$ pairs, ranging from 0.7 fb to 24 fb, and on the couplings of these processes. We obtain world-leading constraints on the couplings for the leptophilic scalar model for masses above 6.5 GeV/$c^2$ and for the axion-like particle model over the entire mass range. △ Less

Abstract: We measure $C\!P$ asymmetries and branching-fraction ratios for $B^\pm \to DK^\pm$ and $Dπ^\pm$ decays with $D\to K^0_{\rm S} K^\pmπ^\mp$, where $D$ is a superposition of $D^0$ and $\bar{D}^0$. Precise measurement of the $D^+_s$ lifetime at Belle II

Abstract: We measure the lifetime of the $D_s^+$ meson using a data sample of 207 fb$^{-1}$ collected by the Belle II experiment running at the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. The lifetime is determined by fitting the decay-time distribution of a sample of $116\times 10^3$ $D_s^+\rightarrowφπ^+$ decays. Novel method for the identification of the production flavor of neutral charmed mesons

Abstract: We propose a new algorithm for the identification of the production flavor of neutral $D$ mesons in the Belle II experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation between the flavor of a reconstructed neutral $D$ meson (signal $D$ meson) and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the $e^+e^-\to c \bar{c}$ event. These include those originating from the decay of the other c… ▽ More We propose a new algorithm for the identification of the production flavor of neutral $D$ mesons in the Belle II experiment. The algorithm exploits the correlation between the flavor of a reconstructed neutral $D$ meson (signal $D$ meson) and the electric charges of particles reconstructed in the rest of the $e^+e^-\to c \bar{c}$ event. These include those originating from the decay of the other charm hadron produced in the event, as well as those possibly produced in association with the signal $D$ meson. We develop the algorithm using simulation and calibrate it in data using decay modes that identify the flavor of the decaying neutral $D$ meson. We use a data sample of $e^+e^-$ collisions, corresponding to $362\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, collected by Belle II at center-of-mass energies near the $Υ(4S)$ mass. The effective tagging efficiency in data is $(47.91 \pm 0.07 \mathrm{(stat)} \pm 0.51 \mathrm{(syst)})\%$, independent of the neutral-$D$-meson decay mode. This charm flavor tagger will approximately double the effective sample size of many $CP$-violation and charm-mixing measurements that so far have exclusively relied on neutral $D$ mesons originating from $D^{*\pm}$ decays. While developed for Belle II, the basic principles underlying the charm flavor tagger can be used in other experiments, including those at hadron colliders. △ Less

Abstract: We present a new determination of the smallest neutrino mixing angle $θ_{13}$ and the mass-squared difference $Δ{\rm m}^{2}_{32}$ using a final sample of $5.55 \times 10^{6}$ inverse beta-decay (IBD) candidates with the final-state neutron captured on gadolinium. This sample was selected from the complete data set obtained by the Daya Bay reactor neutrino experiment in 3158 days of operation. The PROSPECT collaboration is preparing an upgraded detector, PROSPECT-II (P-II), to advance capabilities for the investigation of fundamental neutrino physics, fission processes and associated reactor neutrino flux, and nuclear security applications. P-II will expand the statistical power of the original PROSPECT (P-I) dataset by at least an order of magnitude. The new design builds upon previous P-I design and focuses on improving the detector robustness and long-term stability to enable multi-year operation at one or more sites. The new design optimizes the fiducial volume by elimination of dead space previously occupied by internal calibration channels, which in turn necessitates the external deployment. In this paper, we describe a calibration strategy for P-II. The expected performance of externally deployed calibration sources is evaluated using P-I data and a well-benchmarked simulation package by varying detector segmentation configurations in the analysis. The proposed external calibration scheme delivers a compatible energy scale model and achieves comparable performance with the inclusion of an additional AmBe neutron source, in comparison to the previous internal arrangement. Most importantly, the estimated uncertainty contribution from the external energy scale calibration model meets the precision requirements of the P-II experiment. △ Less

We extract the partial decay rates as functions of $w$ and perform a fit to the decay form-factor and the CKM parameter $|V_{cb}|$ using the BGL parameterization of the form factor and lattice QCD input from the FNAL/MILC and HPQCD collaborations. We obtain $η_{EW}|V_{cb}|=(38.53\pm 1.15)\times 10^{-3}$, where $η_{EW}$ is an electroweak correction, and the error accounts for theoretical and experimental sources of uncertainty. △ Less

By fitting the measured partial branching fractions as functions of $q^{2}$, together with constraints on the nonperturbative hadronic contribution from lattice QCD calculations, the magnitude of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element $V_{ub}$, $(3.55 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.17) \times 10^{-3}$, is extracted. Improved Measurement of the Evolution of the Reactor Antineutrino Flux and Spectrum at Daya Bay

In this work, the evolution of the flux and spectrum as a function of the reactor isotopic content is reported in terms of the inverse-beta-decay yield at Daya Bay with 1958 days of data and improved systematic uncertainties. These measurements are compared with two signature model predictions: the Huber-Mueller model based on the conversion method and the SM2018 model based on the summation method. The measured average flux and spectrum, as well as their evolution with the 239Pu fraction, are inconsistent with the predictions of the Huber-Mueller model. In contrast, the SM2018 model is shown to agree with the average flux and its evolution but fails to describe the energy spectrum. Altering the predicted IBD spectrum from 239Pu does not improve the agreement with the measurement for either model. The models can be brought into better agreement with the measurements if either the predicted spectrum due to 235U is changed or the predicted 235U, 238U, 239Pu, and 241Pu spectra are changed in equal measure. △ Less

Observation of $e^+e^-\toωχ_{bJ}(1P)$ and search for $X_b \to ωΥ(1S)$ at $\sqrt{s}$ near 10.75 GeV

Abstract: We study the processes $e^+e^-\toωχ_{bJ}(1P)$ ($J$ = 0, 1, or 2) using samples at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.701, 10.745, and 10.805 GeV, corresponding to 1.6, 9.8, and 4.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, respectively. These data were collected with the Belle II detector during special operations of the SuperKEKB collider above the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We report the first observatio… ▽ More We study the processes $e^+e^-\toωχ_{bJ}(1P)$ ($J$ = 0, 1, or 2) using samples at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.701, 10.745, and 10.805 GeV, corresponding to 1.6, 9.8, and 4.7 fb$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity, respectively. These data were collected with the Belle II detector during special operations of the SuperKEKB collider above the $Υ(4S)$ resonance. We report the first observation of $ωχ_{bJ}(1P)$ signals at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.745 GeV. By combining Belle II data with Belle results at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.867 GeV, we find energy dependencies of the Born cross sections for $e^+e^-\to ωχ_{b1,b2}(1P)$ to be consistent with the shape of the $Υ(10753)$ state. These data indicate that the internal structures of the $Υ(10753)$ and $Υ(10860)$ states may differ. Including data at $\sqrt{s}$ = 10.653 GeV, we also search for the bottomonium equivalent of the $X(3872)$ state decaying into $ωΥ(1S)$.
