We present the development of an automated testing system for the VMM hybrid of the RD51 collaboration. The VMM hybrid is a new front-end board for the RD51 common readout system, the Scalable Readout System, and will become the workhorse for the next decade to read out Micro-Pattern Gaseous Detectors. It uses the VMM chip developed for the ATLAS New Small Wheel to convert charge signals from detectors to digital data. Our testing system automatically characterises the quality of the VMM chips on the hybrid after production during multiple tests. Results are evaluated to classify the chips and hybrids and uploaded to a database. We evaluated those results for the first two production batches to measure the production yield. The yield is better than the threshold below which chip testing on a wafer level offers financial benefits. Observations on prominent chip failures were propagated back to the hybrid production process to further increase the yield for future productions.

We present a physics show musical with live physics experiments and live performed songs with live orchestral accompaniment. The musical was first put on stage in German at the Physikalische Institut, University of Bonn, on the 24th of March, 2019. Here we present the original German script as well as an English translation, including a translation of the songs. We also give brief descriptions of all the experiments employed, with photos as well as how we present the experiments.
The musical tells the story of a couple, Life and Death, nicknamed Vita and Mortis, who want to buy a planet where they can settle down and raise a family. They arrive at the store Planetamos, run by the manager Luna Callisto and the scientist Jupi Mercury. The latter two present to Vita and Mortis what is required for life on a planet, as well as all of the extra features for sale, to make it that very special place for their family. Through Vita and Mortis the audience learns about the physical requirements for life on a planet orbiting a star.
The show involves 14 live physics experiments. The four actors sing 7 songs, which are to well-known tunes with new lyrics, in German. During the show the singers are accompanied by a small live orchestra, consisting of a flute, an oboe, a piano, a violin, a cello, a harp and percussion. The show was developed by the University of Bonn physics students, who have all been very active in the University of Bonn Physics Show (Physikshow der Universitaet Bonn) the past few years.
To the best of our knowledge this is the first physics show musical with live experiments and live song and orchestra.

We discuss a bivariate beta distribution that can model arbitrary beta-distributed marginals with a positive correlation. The distribution is constructed from six independent gamma-distributed random variates. We show how the parameters of the distribution can be fit to data using moment matching. Previous work used an approximate and sometimes inaccurate method to compute the covariance. Here, we derive all product moments and the exact covariance, which can easily be computed numerically. The bivariate case can be generalized to a multivariate distribution with arbitrary beta-distributed marginals. Furthermore, we generalize the distribution from two marginal beta to two marginal Dirichlet distributions. The resulting correlated Dirichlet distribution makes it possible to model two correlated Dirichlet-distributed random vectors.

Solving Bongard Problems with a Visual Language and Pragmatic Reasoning

More than 50 years ago Bongard introduced 100 visual concept learning problems as a testbed for intelligent vision systems. These problems are now known as Bongard problems. Although they are well known in the cognitive science and AI communities only moderate progress has been made towards building systems that can solve a substantial subset of them. In the system presented here, visual features are extracted through image processing and then translated into a symbolic visual vocabulary. We introduce a formal language that allows representing complex visual concepts based on this vocabulary. Using this language and Bayesian inference, complex visual concepts can be induced from the examples that are provided in each Bongard problem. Contrary to other concept learning problems the examples from which concepts are induced are not random in Bongard problems, instead they are carefully chosen to communicate the concept, hence requiring pragmatic reasoning. Taking pragmatic reasoning into account we find good agreement between the concepts with high posterior probability and the solutions formulated by Bongard himself. While this approach is far from solving all Bongard problems, it solves the biggest fraction yet.
