The generalisation of proper time, as an alternative to models with extra dimensions of space, has been proposed as the source of the elementary structures of matter. Direct connections with the Standard Model of particle physics together with dark sector candidates can be attained in this manner, through the additional components and symmetry breaking pattern identified on extracting the substructure of the local 4-dimensional spacetime form. In this paper we focus more on the extended and global properties of the theory, both in relation to amalgamating gravity with quantum theory and to broader cosmological issues. Contrast will be made with both early S-matrix bootstrap models and more recent cosmological bootstrap techniques. With time playing a central role in the new theory we describe how a 'universal bootstrap' can be constructed and elaborate upon the implications.

A central aim of theoretical physics is to account for the structure of matter at the most elementary level as underlying the Standard Model of particle physics, and ideally also as a basis for a substantial dark sector, as distributed in 4-dimensional spacetime. A broad class of theories augment the global 4-dimensional spacetime arena itself to a higher-dimensional spacetime structure, with the properties of matter then deriving from the properties of the extra spatial dimensions. We motivate an alternative approach in which we begin with the local structure of 4-dimensional spacetime and augment the local form for a proper time interval. The symmetries and properties of the residual components, over the local 4-dimensional spacetime form, are found to exhibit appropriate features to account for the visible Standard Model sector while in parallel direct connections can also be identified with dark sector models.

After first outlining a set of criteria to be ideally met by any proposal for a comprehensive unification scheme we describe the extent to which a theory based on generalised proper time satisfies these objectives. In comparison with other approaches we also discuss the change in perspective regarding the relations between space, time and matter associated with this theory.

We describe a theory amalgamating quantum theory and general relativity through the identification of a continuous 4-dimensional spacetime arena constructed from the substructures of a generalised multi-dimensional form for proper time. In beginning with neither a matter field content nor the geometric structure of an extended 4-dimensional spacetime the properties of these entities, together with their mutual correspondence, are derived through the constraints implied in founding the theory upon the general form of proper time alone. The geometric structure of the spacetime identified exhibits a locally degenerate description in terms of an inherent ambiguity in the apparent matter field content, in a manner consistent with the Einstein field equation of general relativity while also incorporating an intrinsic indeterminacy that is characteristic of quantum phenomena. Here the quantum properties of all non-gravitational fields arise from this composition of spacetime, rather than via a postulated set of rules applied in spacetime to be extended and applied to the gravitational field or spacetime itself. The contrast with several other approaches to quantum gravity and the manner in which this framework can incorporate the essential properties of general relativity and quantum theory, both individually and in combination, will be elaborated. While emphasis will be upon providing a unifying conceptual basis the development of the associated mathematical framework will also be described.

In considering the nature of the basic mathematical structures appropriate for describing the fundamental elements of particle physics a significant role for the octonions, as an extension from the complex numbers and uniquely the largest division algebra, has occasionally been proposed. Rather than being based initially upon the more abstract grounds of mathematical aesthetics, here we describe a unified theory motivated conceptually through an elementary generalisation of the expression for a local proper time interval, beyond that of 4-dimensional spacetime and also beyond that of the local structure of models with extra spatial dimensions, for which the explicit mathematical development naturally incorporates the octonion algebra as an essential feature. Properties of matter are identified directly through the symmetry breaking structure entailed in the necessary extraction of the external 4-dimensional spacetime background and are shown to reproduce a series of characteristic structures of the Standard Model of particle physics. While already employing octonion-based constructions of the exceptional Lie groups E6 and E7 the uncovering of the full Standard Model, as well as new physics beyond, is predicted to involve an E8-related structure for which the octonion algebra is again anticipated to be of fundamental importance.

Models with two right-handed neutrinos are able to accommodate solar and atmospheric neutrino oscillation observations as well as a mechanism for the baryon asymmetry of the universe. While economical in terms of the required new states beyond the Standard Model, given that there are three generations of the other leptons and quarks this raises the question concerning why only two right-handed neutrino states should exist. Here we develop from first principles a fundamental unification scheme based upon a direct generalisation and analysis of a simple proper time interval with a structure beyond that of local 4-dimensional spacetime and further augmenting that of models with extra spatial dimensions. This theory leads to properties of matter fields that resemble the Standard Model, with an intrinsic left-right asymmetry which is particularly marked for the neutrino sector. It will be shown how the theory can provide a foundation for the natural incorporation of two right-handed neutrinos and may in principle underlie firm predictions both in the neutrino sector and for other new physics beyond the Standard Model. While connecting with contemporary and future experiments the origins of the theory are motivated in a similar spirit as for the earliest unified field theories.

One hundred years ago this year attempts began to generalise general relativity with the ambition of incorporating electromagnetism alongside gravitation in a unified field theory. These developments led to gauge theories and models with extra spatial dimensions that have greatly influenced the modern-day pursuit of a unification scheme incorporating the Standard Model of particle physics, again ideally together with gravity. In this paper we motivate a further natural generalisation from extra spatial dimensions at an elementary level which is found to much more directly accommodate distinctive features of the Standard Model. We also investigate the potential to uncover new physical phenomena, making a case in the neutrino sector for one left-handed neutrino state to be massless, and emphasise the opportunity for a close collaboration between theory and experiment. The new theory possesses a very simple interpretation regarding the underlying source of these empirical structures.

The nature of the change in perspective that accompanies the proposal of a unified physical theory deriving from the single dimension of time is elaborated. On expressing a temporal interval in a multi-dimensional form, via a direct arithmetic decomposition, both the geometric structure of 4-dimensional spacetime and the physical structure of matter in spacetime can be derived from the substructure of time. While reviewing this construction, here we emphasise how the new conceptual picture differs from the more typical viewpoint in theoretical physics of accounting for the properties of matter by first postulating entities on top of a given spacetime background or by geometrically augmenting 4-dimensional spacetime itself. With reference to historical and philosophical sources we argue that the proposed perspective, centred on the possible arithmetic forms of time, provides an account for how the mathematical structures of the theory can relate directly to the physical structures of the empirical world.

Based upon the unique and simple starting point of the continuous flow of time a physical theory is derived through an analysis of the elementary arithmetic composition and symmetries of this one-dimensional progression. We describe how the explicit development of the theory leads to a prediction of the unique and largest exceptional Lie group E8 as the full `symmetry of time', and hence as the unification group for the physical theory. This proposal results from the identification of a series of esoteric properties of the Standard Model of particle physics from a series of intermediate augmentations in the `multi-dimensional form of time'. These physical properties derive from the breaking of the full symmetry of time through the necessary interposition of an external 4-dimensional spacetime arena, itself constructed from a 4-dimensional form of time, as the background to all observations. The basic conceptual picture is presented together with reviews of a number of references regarding E8 structures which may provide a significant guide in pursuing the goal of converging upon a complete unified theory.

We describe how a physical theory incorporating the properties of fields deriving from extra-dimensional structures over a four-dimensional spacetime manifold can in principle be obtained through the analysis of a simple initial structure consisting of the one dimension of time alone, as represented by the real line. The simplicity of this starting point leads to symmetries of multi-dimensional forms of time, from which a geometrical structure can be derived which is similar to the framework employed in non-Abelian Kaluza-Klein theories. This leads to a relationship between the external and internal curvature on the spacetime manifold unified through the underlying constraint of the one dimension of time for the theory presented here. We also describe how the symmetry breaking structure is compatible with the Coleman-Mandula theorem for the subsequent quantisation of the theory.

A physical theory of the world is presented under the unifying principle that all of nature is laid out before us and experienced through the passage of time. The one-dimensional progression in time is opened out into a multi-dimensional mathematically consistent flow, with the simplicity of the former giving rise to symmetries of the latter. The act of perception identifies an extended spacetime arena of intermediate dimension, incorporating the symmetry of geometric spatial rotations, against which physical objects are formed and observed. The spacetime symmetry is contained as a subgroup of, and provides a natural breaking mechanism for, the higher general symmetry of time. It will be described how the world of gravitation and cosmology, as well as quantum theory and particle physics, arises from these considerations.

Four-dimensional spacetime, together with a natural generalisation to extra dimensions, is obtained through an analysis of the structures and symmetries deriving from possible arithmetic expressions for one-dimensional time. On taking the infinitesimal limit this simple one-dimensional structure can be consistently equated with a homogeneous form of arbitrary dimension possessing both spacetime and more general symmetries. An extended 4-dimensional manifold, with the associated spacetime symmetry, provides a natural breaking mechanism for a higher-dimensional form and symmetry of time. It will be described how this symmetry breaking leads to a series of distinct properties of the Standard Model of particle physics, deriving directly from the natural mathematical development of the theory.

We present the results of sixteen Swift-triggered GRB follow-up observations taken with the VERITAS telescope array from January, 2007 to June, 2009. The median energy threshold and response time of these observations was 260 GeV and 320 s, respectively. Observations had an average duration of 90 minutes. Each burst is analyzed independently in two modes: over the whole duration of the observations and again over a shorter time scale determined by the maximum VERITAS sensitivity to a burst with a t^-1.5 time profile. This temporal model is characteristic of GRB afterglows with high-energy, long-lived emission that have been detected by the Large Area Telescope (LAT) on-board the Fermi satellite. No significant VHE gamma-ray emission was detected and upper limits above the VERITAS threshold energy are calculated. The VERITAS upper limits are corrected for gamma-ray extinction by the extragalactic background light (EBL) and interpreted in the context of the keV emission detected by Swift. For some bursts the VHE emission must have less power than the keV emission, placing constraints on inverse Compton models of VHE emission.
