Phases of Small Worlds: A Mean Field Formulation
Abstract: A network is said to have the properties of a small world if a suitably defined average distance between any two nodes is proportional to the logarithm of the number of nodes, $N$. In this paper, we present a novel derivation of the small-world property for Gilbert-Erdös-Renyi random networks. We employ a mean field approximation that permits the analytic derivation of the distribution of shortest… ▽ More

Comment on 'On biological signaling' by G. Nimtz and H. Aichmann, Z. Naturforsch. 75a: 507-509, 2020
Abstract: In 2005, we proposed that the nerve pulse is an electromechanical soliton. This concept represents a challenge to the well-known Hodgkin-Huxley model which is of a purely electrical nature. The soliton theory was criticized by Nimtz and Aichmann in a recent article in Zeitung für Naturforschung A. Here, we wish to comment on some statements that we regard as misinterpretations of our views.

Noise residuals for GW150914 using maximum likelihood and numerical relativity templates
Abstract: We reexamine the results presented in a recent work by Nielsen et al. [1], in which the properties of the noise residuals in the 40\,ms chirp domain of GW150914 were investigated. This paper confirmed the presence of strong (i.e., about 0.80) correlations between residual noise in the Hanford and Livingston detectors in the chirp domain as previously seen by us [2] when using a numerical relativit… ▽ More

The free energy of biomembrane and nerve excitation and the role of anesthetics
Abstract: In the electromechanical theory of nerve stimulation, the nerve impulse consists of a traveling region of solid membrane in a liquid environment. Therefore, the free energy necessary to stimulate a pulse is directly related to the free energy difference necessary to induce a phase transition in the nerve membrane. It is a function of temperature and pressure, and it is sensitively dependent on the… ▽ More

Possible associated signal with GW150914 in the LIGO data

Abstract: When a Bose-Einstein condensed cloud of atoms is given some angular momentum, it forms vortices arranged in structures with a discrete rotational symmetry. Fluctuations of systems in finite heat reservoirs with applications to phase transitions in lipid membranes

Citation Networks in High Energy Physics
Abstract: The citation network constituted by the SPIRES data base is investigated empirically. The probability that a given paper in the SPIRES data base has $k$ citations is well described by simple power laws, $P(k) \propto k^{-α}$, with $α\approx 1.2$ for $k$ less than 50 citations and $α\approx 2.3$ for 50 or more citations. Two models are presented that both represent the data well, one which genera… ▽ More

Microscopic spectral density in random matrix models for chiral and diquark condensation
Abstract: We examine random matrix models of QCD which are capable of supporting both chiral and diquark condensation. A numerical study of the spectral densities near zero virtuality shows that the introduction of color in the interactions does not alter the one-body results imposed by chiral symmetry. A model with three colors has the spectral density predicted for the chiral ensemble with a Dyson index… ▽ More

Products of Random Matrices
Abstract: We derive analytic expressions for infinite products of random 2x2 matrices. The determinant of the target matrix is log-normally distributed, whereas the remainder is a surprisingly complicated function of a parameter characterizing the norm of the matrix and a parameter characterizing its skewness. The distribution may have importance as an uncommitted prior in statistical image analysis.

Lieb Mode in a Quasi One-Dimensional Bose-Einstein Condensate of Atoms
Abstract: We calculate the dispersion relation associated with a solitary wave in a quasi-one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensate of atoms confined in a harmonic, cylindrical trap in the limit of weak and strong interactions. In both cases, the dispersion relation is linear for long wavelength excitations and terminates at the point where the group velocity vanishes. We also calculate the dispersion rela… ▽ More
