We present a novel asymptotically anti-de Sitter black hole solution with conformally-coupled scalar fields in the first-order formalism of gravity in four dimensions. To do so, we consider a one-parameter extension of conformal transformations by exploiting the fact that the vielbein and spin connection are regarded as independent fields. We solve the field equations analytically and obtain a static black hole solution with nontrivial torsion sourced by the conformal coupling between the scalar field and geometry. The presence of torsion renders the scalar field everywhere regular, while the curvature and torsion singularities coalesce into the origin. We show that this configuration is continuously connected to previously reported solutions in the limit of vanishing torsion and analyze its main properties, focusing on the consequences of the torsional singularity.

In this work, we propose a four-dimensional gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten model, obtained as a dimensional reduction from a transgression field theory invariant under the $\mathcal{N}=1$ Poincaré supergroup. For this purpose, we consider that the two gauge connections on which the transgression action principle depends are given by linear and non-linear realizations of the gauge group respectively. The field content of the resulting four-dimensional theory is given by the gauge fields of the linear connection, in addition to a set of scalar and spinor multiplets in the same representation of the gauge supergroup, which in turn, correspond to the coordinates of the coset space between the gauge group and the five-dimensional Lorentz group. We then decompose the action in terms of four-dimensional quantities and derive the corresponding equations of motion. We extend our analysis to the non- and ultra- relativistic regime.

This article studies the effects of an arbitrary dark matter spin tensor on the propagation of gravitational wave amplitude in the context of Einstein-Cartan theory. We choose to work with an arbitrary spin tensor because, given our ignorance of the nature of dark matter, it is sensible not to make further hypotheses on its spin and not to assume any particular model for its spin tensor (or its vanishing). The analysis focuses on a \textquotedblleft weak-torsion regime,\textquotedblright\ such that gravitational wave emission, at leading and subleading orders, does not deviate from standard General Relativity. We show that, in principle, the background torsion induced by an eventual dark matter spin component could lead to an anomalous dampening or amplification of the gravitational wave amplitude, after going across a long cosmological distance. We assess the importance of this torsion-induced anomalous amplitude propagation for binary black hole mergers in a way as model-free as possible in Einstein-Cartan gravity. It is possible to prove that at its best, for realistic late-universe cosmological scenarios, the effect is tiny and falls below detection thresholds, even for near-future interferometers such as LISA. Therefore, detecting this effect may not be impossible, but it is still beyond our technological capabilities. As a model-independent result in the Einstein-Cartan context, it also implies that mergers are robust standard sirens without considering any potential dark-matter-induced torsional effects.

We consider different possibilities on how torsion is affected by conformal transformations and discuss how this translates into the interpolation between two different conformal transformations of the spin connection, parameterized with a zero-form parameter $λ$. We prove that regardless of the type of transformation one chooses, in this setting torsion remains as a non-propagating field. We also discuss the conservation of the mimetic stress-energy tensor and show that the trace of the total stress-energy tensor is not null but depends on both, the value of $λ$ and spacetime torsion.

In this work, we study some thermodynamical aspects associated with torsion in a flat FLRW spacetime cosmic evolution. By implementing two Ansatze for the torsion term, we find that the model admits a phantom regime or a quintessence behavior. This scheme differs from the $Λ$CDM model at the thermodynamical level. The resulting cosmic expansion is not adiabatic, the fulfillment of the second law of thermodynamics requires a positive torsion term, and the temperature of the cosmic fluid is always positive. The entropy of the torsion phantom scenario is negative, but introducing chemical potential solves this issue. For a Dirac-Milne type Universe, the torsion leads to a growing behavior for the temperature of the fluid but has no incidence on the rate of expansion.

In this paper we show that this is not a general feature of scalar-tensor theories, but rather a consequence of assuming that spacetime torsion vanishes identically. At least for the case of a nonminimal Gauss-Bonnet coupling, removing the torsionless condition restores the canonical dispersion relation and therefore the correct propagation speed for gravitational waves. To achieve this result we develop a new approach, based on the first-order formulation of gravity, to deal with perturbations on these Riemann-Cartan geometries.

Examples include electromagnetic and gravitational waves on a spacetime with torsion. The toolkit comprises generalized versions of the Lichnerowicz-de Rham and the Beltrami wave operators, and the Weitzenböck identity relating them on Riemann-Cartan geometries. The construction applies to any field belonging to a matrix representation of a Lie (super) algebra containing an $\mathfrak{so}$ subalgebra. Using these tools, we analyze the propagation of different massless waves in the eikonal (geometric optics) limit in a model-independent way and find that they all must propagate at the speed of light along null torsionless geodesics, in full agreement with the multimessenger observation GW170817/GRB170817A. We also discuss how gravitational waves could be used as a probe to test for torsion.

The Horndeski Lagrangian brings together all possible interactions between gravity and a scalar field that yield second-order field equations in four-dimensional spacetime. As originally proposed, it only addresses phenomenology without torsion, which is a non-Riemannian feature of geometry. Since torsion can potentially affect interesting phenomena such as gravitational waves and early Universe inflation, in this paper we allow torsion to exist and propagate within the Horndeski framework. To achieve this goal, we cast the Horndeski Lagrangian in Cartan's first-order formalism, and introduce wave operators designed to act covariantly on p-form fields that carry Lorentz indices. We find that nonminimal couplings and second-order derivatives of the scalar field in the Lagrangian are indeed generic sources of torsion. Metric perturbations couple to the background torsion and new torsional modes appear. These may be detected via gravitational waves but not through Yang-Mills gauge bosons.

In stark contrast with the three-dimensional case, higher-dimensional Chern-Simons theories can have non-topological, propagating degrees of freedom. Finding those vacua that allow for the propagation of linear perturbations, however, proves to be surprisingly challenging. The simplest solutions are somehow "hyper-stable," preventing the construction of realistic, four-dimensional physical models.
Here, we show that a Randall-Sundrum brane universe can be regarded as a vacuum solution of Chern-Simons gravity in five-dimensional spacetime, with non vanishing torsion along the dimension perpendicular to the brane. Linearized perturbations around this solution not only exist, but behave as standard gravitational waves on a four-dimensional Minkowski background. In the non-perturbative regime, the solution leads to a four-dimensional "cosmological function" $Λ\left( x \right)$ which depends on the Euler density of the brane.
Interestingly, the fact that the solution admits nontrivial linear perturbations seems to be related to an often neglected property of the Randall-Sundrum spacetime: that it is a group manifold, or, more precisely, two identical group manifolds glued together along the brane. The gravitational theory is then built around this fact, adding the Lorentz generators and one scalar generator needed to close the algebra. In this way, a conjecture emerges: a spacetime that is also a group manifold can be regarded as the ground state of a Chern-Simons theory for an appropriate Lie algebra.

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in five-dimensional spacetime provides an excellent example of a theory that, while including higher-order curvature corrections to General Relativity, still shares many of its features, such as second-order field equations for the metric. We focus on the largely unexplored case where the coupling constants of the theory are such that no constant-curvature solution is allowed, leaving open the question of what the vacuum state should then be. We find that even a slight deviation from the anti-de Sitter Chern-Simons theory, where the vacuum state is five-dimensional AdS spacetime, leads to a complete symmetry breakdown, with the fifth dimension either being compactified into a small circle or shrinking away exponentially with time. A complete family of solutions, including duality relations among them, is uncovered and shown to be unique within a certain class. This dynamical dimensional reduction scenario seems particularly attractive as a means for higher-dimensional theories to make contact with our four-dimensional world.

A genuine gauge theory for the Poincaré, de Sitter or anti-de Sitter algebras can be constructed in (2n-1)-dimensional spacetime by means of the Chern-Simons form, yielding a gravitational theory that differs from General Relativity but shares many of its properties, such as second order field equations for the metric. The particular form of the Lagrangian is determined by a rank n, symmetric tensor invariant under the relevant algebra. In practice, the calculation of this invariant tensor can be reduced to the computation of the trace of the symmetrized product of n Dirac Gamma matrices Γ_{ab} in 2n-dimensional spacetime. While straightforward in principle, this calculation can become extremely cumbersome in practice. For large enough n, existing computer algebra packages take an inordinate long time to produce the answer or plainly fail having used up all available memory. In this talk we show that the general formula for the trace of the symmetrized product of 2n Gamma matrices Γ_{ab} can be written as a certain sum over the integer partitions s of n, with every term being multiplied by a numerical coefficient α_{s}. We then give a general algorithm that computes the α-coefficients as the solution of a linear system of equations generated by evaluating the general formula for different sets of tensors B^{ab} with random numerical entries. A recurrence relation between different coefficients is shown to hold and is used in a second, "minimal" algorithm to greatly speed up the computations. Runtime of the minimal algorithm stays below 1 min on a typical desktop computer for up to n=25, which easily covers all foreseeable applications of the trace formula.

We find that the TZ Lagrangian may be cast as a polynomial in 1/l, where l is a length, and compute explicitly the first three dominant terms. The term proportional to 1/l^9 turns out to be essentially the Lagrangian of the standard 1978 supergravity theory of Cremmer, Julia and Scherk, thus establishing a previously unknown relation between the two theories. The computation is nontrivial because, when written in a sufficiently explicit way, the TZ Lagrangian has roughly one thousand non-explicitly Lorentz-covariant terms. Specially designed algebraic techniques are used to accomplish the results.

Chern-Simons models for gravity are interesting because they provide with a truly gauge-invariant action principle in the fiber-bundle sense. So far, their main drawback has largely been the perceived remoteness from standard General Relativity, based on the presence of higher powers of the curvature in the Lagrangian (except, remarkably, for three-dimensional spacetime). Here we report on a simple model that suggests a mechanism by which standard General Relativity in five-dimensional spacetime may indeed emerge at a special critical point in the space of couplings, where additional degrees of freedom and corresponding "anomalous" Gauss-Bonnet constraints drop out from the Chern-Simons action. To achieve this result, both the Lie algebra g and the symmetric g-invariant tensor that define the Chern-Simons Lagrangian are constructed by means of the Lie algebra S-expansion method with a suitable finite abelian semigroup S. The results are generalized to arbitrary odd dimensions, and the possible extension to the case of eleven-dimensional supergravity is briefly discussed.

The expansion of a Lie algebra entails finding a new, bigger algebra G, through a series of well-defined steps, from an original Lie algebra g. One incarnation of the method, the so-called S-expansion, involves the use of a finite abelian semigroup S to accomplish this task. In this paper we put forward a dual formulation of the S-expansion method which is based on the dual picture of a Lie algebra given by the Maurer-Cartan forms. The dual version of the method is useful in finding a generalization to the case of a gauge free differential algebra, which in turn is relevant for physical applications in, e.g., Supergravity. It also sheds new light on the puzzling relation between two Chern-Simons Lagrangians for gravity in 2+1 dimensions, namely the Einstein-Hilbert Lagrangian and the one for the so-called "exotic gravity".

This thesis deals with the construction of an eleven-dimensional gauge theory, off-shell invariant, for the M Algebra. The theory is built using a Transgression Form as a Lagrangian.
In order to accomplish this, one must first analyze the general construction of Transgression Gauge Field Theories, for an arbitrary symmetry group (Chapter 3). Some interesting results regarding this point are (1) the calculation of Noether Charges which are off-shell conserved, (2) the association of the double connection structure of the Transgression Form with both orientations of the basis manifold and (3) the Subspace Separation Method, which allows us to divide the action in bulk and boundary terms, and to split them in terms which reflect the physics corresponding to a symmetry group choice.
To construct the gauge theory explicitly, it is necessary to buid a new mathematical tool, called S-Expansion procedure. Analyzing the M Algebra under the light of this method, it is possible to construct an invariant tensor for it. This method is developed in a general way and, given a Lie algebra and an Abelian, finite semigroup, it allows us to generate new Lie algebras (S-Expanded Algebras, Resonant Subalgebras, Resonant Forced Algebras).
Applying this tool, an invariant tensor for the M Algebra is constructed, which serves as the basis upon which a Transgression Gauge Field Theory for the M Algebra (Chapter 5) is constructed. The relationship between the four-dimensional dynamics from this theory and the eleven-dimensional torsion is also considered. Finally, we close with an analysis of the possible applications of the developed tools, in the context of Cosmology, Supergravity and String Theory.

Abstract:
A new Lagrangian realizing the symmetry of the M Algebra in eleven-dimensional space-time is presented. By means of the novel technique of Abelian Semigroup Expansion, a link between the M Algebra and the orthosymplectic algebra osp(32|1) is established, and an M Algebra-invariant symmetric tensor of rank six is computed. This symmetric invariant tensor is a key ingredient in the construction of…

This symmetric invariant tensor is a key ingredient in the construction of the new Lagrangian. The gauge-invariant Lagrangian is displayed in an explicitly Lorentz-invariant way by means of a subspace separation method based on the extended Cartan homotopy formula.

Abstract:
We propose an outgrowth of the expansion method introduced by de Azcarraga et al. [Nucl. Phys. B 662 (2003) 185]. The basic idea consists in considering the direct product between an abelian semigroup S and a Lie algebra g. General conditions under which relevant subalgebras can systematically be extracted from S \times g are given. We show how, for a particular choice of semigroup S, the known…

The basic idea consists in considering the direct product between an abelian semigroup S and a Lie algebra g. General conditions under which relevant subalgebras can systematically be extracted from S \times g are given. We show how, for a particular choice of semigroup S, the known cases of expanded algebras can be reobtained, while new ones arise from different choices. Concrete examples, including the M algebra and a D'Auria-Fre-like Superalgebra, are considered. Finally, we find explicit, non-trace invariant tensors for these S-expanded algebras, which are essential ingredients in, e.g., the formulation of Supergravity theories in arbitrary space-time dimensions.

Five-dimensional CS Supergravity is used as an example to illustrate the method.

Chern--Simons Gravity and Supergravity are then used as examples to illustrate the method. In the end we discuss some further theoretical implications that arise naturally from the mathematical structure being considered.

Abstract:
In the context of a gauge theoretical formulation, higher dimensional gravity invariant under the AdS group is dimensionally reduced to Euler-Chern-Simons gravity. The dimensional reduction procedure of Grignani-Nardelli [Phys. Lett. B 300, 38 (1993)] is generalized so as to permit reducing D-dimensional Lanczos Lovelock gravity to d=D-1 dimensions.

Abstract:
A higher dimensional gravity invariant both under local Lorentz rotations and under local Anti de Sitter boosts is constructed. It is shown that such a construction is possible both when odd dimensions and when even dimensions are considered. It is also proved that such actions have the same coefficients as those obtained by Troncoso and Zanelli.
