The search for new materials for energy-efficient electronic devices has gained unprecedented importance. Among the various classes of magnetic materials driving this search are antiferromagnets, magnetoelectrics, and systems with topological spin excitations. Cu$_3$TeO$_6$ is a material that belongs to all three of these classes. Combining static electric polarization and magnetic torque measurements with phenomenological simulations we demonstrate that magnetic-field-induced spin reorientation needs to be taken into account to understand the linear magnetoelectric (ME) effect in Cu$_3$TeO$_6$. Our calculations reveal that the magnetic field pushes the system from the nonpolar ground state to the polar magnetic structures. However, nonpolar structures only weakly differing from the obtained polar ones exist due to the weak effect that the field-induced breaking of some symmetries has on the calculated structures. Among those symmetries is the $PT$ ($\overline{1}'$) symmetry, preserved for Dirac points found in Cu$_3$TeO$_6$. Our findings establish Cu$_3$TeO$_6$ as a promising playground to study the interplay of spintronics-related phenomena.

We present our submission to the Extreme Value Analysis 2021 Data Challenge in which teams were asked to accurately predict distributions of wildfire frequency and size within spatio-temporal regions of missing data. For the purpose of this competition we developed a variant of the powerful variational autoencoder models dubbed the Conditional Missing data Importance-Weighted Autoencoder (CMIWAE). Our deep latent variable generative model requires little to no feature engineering and does not necessarily rely on the specifics of scoring in the Data Challenge. It is fully trained on incomplete data, with the single objective to maximize log-likelihood of the observed wildfire information. We mitigate the effects of the relatively low number of training samples by stochastic sampling from a variational latent variable distribution, as well as by ensembling a set of CMIWAE models trained and validated on different splits of the provided data. The presented approach is not domain-specific and is amenable to application in other missing data recovery tasks with tabular or image-like information conditioned on auxiliary information.

In this work we present frequency-dependent magnetic susceptibility and dc electric transport properties of three different compositions of hexaferrite Ba$_{1-x}$Pb$_{x}$Fe$_{12-y}$Al$_{y}$O$_{19}$. We find a correlation between activation energies of dc electric transport and ac magnetic susceptibility which persists in the whole researched range of aluminium substitution $x=0$ to $3.3$. This result is discussed in the context of charged magnetic domain walls, the pinning of which is determined by charge carriers activated over the transport gap. Our work points toward a general relaxational mechanism in ferrimagnetic semiconductors which directly affects dynamic magnetic properties via electric transport.

Vector-chiral (VC) antiferromagnetism is a spiral-like ordering of spins which may allow ferroelectricity to occur due to loss of space inversion symmetry. In this paper we report direct experimental observation of ferroelectricity in the VC phase of $β$-TeVO$_4$, a frustrated spin chain system with pronounced magnetic anisotropy and a rich phase diagram. Saturation polarization is proportional to neutron scattering intensities that correspond to the VC magnetic reflection. This implies that inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism is responsible for driving electric polarization. Linear magnetoelectric coupling is absent, however an unprecedented dependence of electric coercive field on applied magnetic field reveals a novel way of manipulating multiferroic information.

We describe our submission to the Extreme Value Analysis 2019 Data Challenge in which teams were asked to predict extremes of sea surface temperature anomaly within spatio-temporal regions of missing data. We present a computational framework which reconstructs missing data using convolutional deep neural networks. Conditioned on incomplete data, we employ autoencoder-like models as multivariate conditional distributions from which possible reconstructions of the complete dataset are sampled using imputed noise. In order to mitigate bias introduced by any one particular model, a prediction ensemble is constructed to create the final distribution of extremal values. Our method does not rely on expert knowledge in order to accurately reproduce dynamic features of a complex oceanographic system with minimal assumptions. The obtained results promise reusability and generalization to other domains.

Elementary excitations in condensed matter capture the complex many-body dynamics of interacting basic entities in a simple quasiparticle picture. In magnetic systems the most established quasiparticles are magnons, collective excitations that reside in ordered spin structures, and spinons, their fractional counterparts that emerge in disordered, yet correlated spin states. Here we report on the discovery of elementary excitation inherent to spin-stripe order that represents a bound state of two phason quasiparticles, resulting in a wiggling-like motion of the magnetic moments. We observe these excitations, which we dub "wigglons", in the frustrated zigzag spin-1/2 chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$, where they give rise to unusual low-frequency spin dynamics in the spin-stripe phase. This result provides insights into the stripe physics of strongly-correlated electron systems.

Our experimental and ab initio theoretical studies show the fingerprints of strong correlations and disorder, important role of cation-dimer bonding in charge redistribution, no sign of intra- and inter-dimer dipoles, and the decisive van der Waals contribution to inter-dimer interactions and the ground state structure. The latter consists of quasi-degenerate electronic states related to the different configurations of cation moieties which permit two different equally probable orientations. Upon reducing the temperature, the low-energy excitations slow down, indicating glassy signatures as the cation motion freezes out.

$α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ is a prominent example of charge ordering among organic conductors. In this work we explore the details of transport within the charge-ordered as well as semimetallic phase at ambient pressure. In the high-temperature semimetallic phase, the mobilities and concentrations of both electrons and holes conspire in such a way to create an almost temperature-independent conductivity as well as a low Hall effect. We explain these phenomena as a consequence of a predominantly inter-pocket scattering which equalizes mobilities of the two types of charge carriers. At low temperatures, within the insulating charge-ordered phase two channels of conduction can be discerned: a temperature-dependent activation which follows the mean-field behavior, and a nearest-neighbor hop** contribution. Together with negative magnetoresistance, the latter relies on the presence of disorder. The charge-ordered phase also features a prominent dielectric peak which bears a similarity to relaxor ferroelectrics. Its dispersion is determined by free-electron screening and pushed by disorder well below the transition temperature. The source of this disorder can be found in the anion layers which randomly perturb BEDT-TTF molecules through hydrogen bonds.

The Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Ag$_2$(CN)$_3$ forms a highly-frustrated triangular lattice of $S=1/2$ dimers with a possible quantum-spin-liquid state. Our experimental and numerical studies reveal the emergence of a slight charge imbalance between crystallographically inequivalent sites, relaxor dielectric response and hop** dc transport. In a broader perspective we conclude that the universal properties of strongly-correlated charge-transfer salts with spin liquid state are an anion-supported valence band and cyanide-induced quasi-degenerate electronic configurations in the relaxed state. The generic low-energy excitations are caused by charged domain walls rather than by fluctuating electric dipoles. They give rise to glassy dynamics characteristic of dimerized Mott insulators, including the sibling compound $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$.

The two-dimensional organic conductor $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ undergoes a metal-insulator transition at $T_{\rm CO}=135$ K due to electronic charge ordering. We have conducted time-resolved investigations of its electronic properties in order to explore the field- and temperature-dependent dynamics. At a certain threshold field, the system switches from low-conducting to a high-conducting state, accompanied by a negative differential resistance. Our time-dependent infrared investigations indicate that close to $T_{\rm CO}$ the strong electric field pushes the crystal into a metallic state with optical properties similar to the one for $T>T_{\rm CO}$. Well into the insulating state, however, at $T=80$ K, the spectral response evidences a completely different electronically-induced high-conducting state. Applying a two-state model of hot electrons explains the observations by excitation of charge carriers with a high mobility. They resemble the Dirac-like charge-carriers with a linear dispersion of the electronic bands found in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ at high-pressure. Extensive numerical simulations quantitatively reproduce our experimental findings in all details.

In the metallic state, $T > 135$~K, we observe a 50\% increase in the Drude contribution as well as the mid-infrared band due to the growing intermolecular orbital overlap with pressure up to 11~kbar. In the ordered state, $T<T_{\rm CO}$, we extract how the electronic charge per molecule varies with temperature and pressure: Transport and optical studies demonstrate that charge order and metal-insulator transition coincide and consistently yield a linear decrease of the transition temperature $T_{\rm CO}$ by $8-9$~K/kbar. The charge disproportionation $Δρ$ diminishes by $0.017~e$/kbar and the optical gap $Δ$ between the bands decreases with pressure by -47~cm$^{-1}$/kbar. In our high-pressure and low-temperature experiments, we do observe contributions from the massive charge carriers as well as from massless Dirac electrons to the low-frequency optical conductivity, however, without being able to disentangle them unambiguously.

We have in detail characterized the anisotropic charge response of the dimer Mott insulator $κ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$\-Cu$_2$(CN)$_3$ by dc conductivity, Hall effect and dielectric spectroscopy. At room temperature the Hall coefficient is positive and close to the value expected from stoichiometry; the temperature behavior follows the dc resistivity $ρ(T)$. Within the planes the dc conductivity is well described by variable-range hop** in two dimensions; this model, however, fails for the out-of-plane direction. An unusually broad in-plane dielectric relaxation is detected below about 60 K; it slows down much faster than the dc conductivity following an Arrhenius law. At around 17 K we can identify a pronounced dielectric anomaly concomitantly with anomalous features in the mean relaxation time and spectral broadening. The out-of-plane relaxation, on the other hand, shows a much weaker dielectric anomaly; it closely follows the temperature behavior of the respective dc resistivity. At lower temperatures, the dielectric constant becomes smaller both within and perpendicular to the planes; also the relaxation levels off. The observed behavior bears features of relaxor-like ferroelectricity. Because heterogeneities impede its long-range development, only a weak tunneling-like dynamics persists at low temperatures. We suggest that the random potential and domain structure gradually emerge due to the coupling to the anion network.

The effect of magnesium ion Mg2+ on the dielectric relaxation of semidilute DNA aqueous solutions has been studied by means of dielectric spectroscopy in the 100 Hz-100 MHz frequency range. De Gennes-Pfeuty-Dobrynin semidilute solution correlation length is the pertinent fundamental length scale for sufficiently low concentration of added salt, describing the collective properties of Mg-DNA solutions. No relaxation fingerprint of the DNA denaturation bubbles, leading to exposed hydrophobic core scaling, was detected at low DNA concentrations, thus indicating an increased stability of the double-stranded conformation in Mg-DNA solutions as compared to the case of Na-DNA solutions. Some changes are detected in the behavior of the fundamental length scale pertaining to the single molecule DNA properties, reflecting modified electrostatic screening effects of the Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman type. All results consistently demonstrate that Mg2+ ions interact with DNA in a similar way as Na1+ ions do, their effect being mostly describable through an enhanced screening.

The Mott insulator κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Cl consists of molecular dimers arranged on an anisotropic triangular lattice and develops a canted antiferromagnetic ground state. It has recently been suggested that this system features purely electronic ferroelectricity which requires an electric dipole moment. Optical spectroscopy clearly rules out charge imbalance in this system, which excludes the existence of quantum electric dipoles on the dimers and subsequently a dipolar spin coupling. We suggest that the prominent in-plane dielectric response in κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu[N(CN)2]Cl is due to short-range discommensurations of the antiferromagnetic phase in the temperature range 30 < T < 50 K, and domain wall relaxations at lower temperatures.

Electric-field-dependent pulse measurements are reported in the charge-ordered state of alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3. At low electric fields up to about 50 V/cm only negligible deviations from Ohmic behavior can be identified with no threshold field. At larger electric fields and up to about 100 V/cm a reproducible negative differential resistance is observed with a significant change in shape of the measured resistivity in time. These changes critically depend whether constant voltage or constant current is applied to the single crystal. At high enough electric fields the resistance displays a dramatic drop down to metallic values and relaxes subsequently in a single-exponential manner to its low-field steady-state value. We argue that such an electric-field induced negative differential resistance and switching to transient states are fingerprints of cooperative domain-wall dynamics inherent to two-dimensional bond-charge density wave with ferroelectric-like nature.

Utilizing infrared vibrational spectroscopy we have investigated dimerized two-dimensional organic salts in order to search for possible charge redistribution that might cause electronic dipoles and ferroelectricity: the quantum spin liquid κ-(BEDT-TTF)2Cu2(CN)3, the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator κ-(BEDT-TTF)2$Cu[N(CN)2]Cl, and the superconductor κ-(BEDT-TTF)2$Cu[N(CN)2]Br. None of them exhibit any indication of charge disproportionation upon cooling down to low temperatures. No modification in the charge distribution is observed around T = 6 K where a low-temperature anomaly has been reported for the spin-liquid κ-(BEDT-TTF)2$Cu2(CN)3. In this compound the in-plane optical response and vibrational coupling are rather anisotropic, indicating that the tilt of the BEDT-TTF molecules in c-direction and their coupling to the anion layers has to be considered in the explanation of the electromagnetic properties.

We report a detailed single crystal investigation of a magnetoelectric ferrimagnet Cu2OSeO3 using dc magnetization and ac susceptibility along the three principal directions [100], [110] and [111]. We have observed that in small magnetic fields two magnetic transitions occur, one at Tc = 57 K and the second one at TN = 58 K. At Tc the non-linear susceptibility reveals the emergence of the ferromagnetic component and below Tc the magnetization measurements show the splitting between field-cooled and zero-field-cooled regimes. Above 1000 Oe the magnetization saturates and the system is in a single domain state. The temperature dependence of the saturation below Tc can be well described by m(T) = m(0)[1 - (T/Tc)^2]^β, with m(0) = 0.56 (mu)B/Cu, corresponding to the 3-up-1-down configuration. The dielectric constant measured on a thin single crystal shows a systematic deviation below the transition, indicating an intrinsic magnetoelectric effect.

We report on the anisotropic response, the charge and lattice dynamics of normal and charge-ordered phases with horizontal stripes in single crystals of the organic conductor alpha-(BEDT-TTF)2I3 determined by dc resistivity, dielectric and optical spectroscopy. An overdamped Drude response and a small conductivity anisotropy observed in optics is consistent with a weakly temperature dependent dc conductivity and anisotropy at high temperatures. The splitting of the molecular vibrations nu27(Bu) evidences the abrupt onset of static charge order below TCO=136 K. The drop of optical conductivity measured within the ab plane of the crystal is characterized by an isotropic gap that opens of approximately 75 meV with several phonons becoming pronounced below. Conversely, the dc conductivity anisotropy rises steeply, attaining at 50 K a value 25 times larger than at high temperatures. The dielectric response within this plane reveals two broad relaxation modes of strength Deltaepsilon_LD ~= 5000 and Deltaepsilon_SD ~= 400, centered at 1 kHz < f_LD < 100 MHz and f_SD ~= 1 MHz. The anisotropy of the large-mode (LD) mean relaxation time closely follows the temperature behavior of the respective dc conductivity ratio. We argue that this phason-like excitation is best described as a long-wavelength excitation of a 2kF bond-charge density wave expected theoretically for layered quarter-filled electronic systems with horizontal stripes. Conversely, based on the theoretically expected ferroelectric-like nature of the charge-ordered phase, we associate the small-mode (SD) relaxation with the motion of domain-wall pairs, created at the interface between two types of domains, along the a and b axes. We also consider other possible theoretical interpretations and discuss their limitations.

Dielectric spectroscopy is used to investigate fundamental length scales describing the structure of hyaluronic acid sodium salt (Na-HA) semidilute aqueous solutions. In salt-free regime, the length scale of the relaxation mode detected in MHz range scales with HA concentration as $c_\mathrm{HA}^{-0.5}$ and corresponds to the de Gennes-Pfeuty-Dobrynin correlation length of polyelectrolytes in semidilute solution. The same scaling was observed for the case of long, genomic DNA. Conversely, the length scale of the mode detected in kHz range also varies with HA concentration as $c_\mathrm{HA}^{-0.5}$ which differs from the case of DNA ($c_\mathrm{DNA}^{-0.25}$). The observed behavior suggests that the relaxation in the kHz range reveals the de Gennes-Dobrynin renormalized Debye screening length, and not the average size of the chain, as the pertinent length scale. Similarly, with increasing added salt the electrostatic contribution to the HA persistence length is observed to scale as the Debye length, contrary to scaling pertinent to the Odijk-Skolnick-Fixman electrostatic persistence length observed in the case of DNA. We argue that the observed features of the kHz range relaxation are due to much weaker electrostatic interactions that lead to the absence of Manning condensation as well as a rather high flexibility of HA as compared to DNA.

A crossover from a one-dimensional hop** transport along the chains for y >= 3 to a quasi-two-dimensional charge conduction in the ladder planes for y <~ 2 is observed. This is attributed to a partial hole transfer from chains to ladders when the hole do** exceeds nh ~= 4 and approaches fully doped value n_h = 6. For y <~ 2 a weak dielectric relaxation at radio-frequencies and a microwave mode are detected, which might be recognized as signatures of a charge-density wave phase developed at short length scales in the ladders planes.

Dielectric spectroscopy is used to investigate fundamental length scales of 146 bp short-fragment (nucleosomal) dilute Na-DNA solutions. Two relaxation modes are detected: the high- and the low-frequency mode. Dependence of the corresponding length scales on the DNA and on the (uni-valent) salt concentration is studied in detail, being different from the case of long, genomic DNA, investigated before. In low added salt regime, the length scale of the high-frequency mode scales as the average separation between DNAs, though it is smaller in absolute magnitude, whereas the length scale of the low-frequency mode is equal to the contour length of DNA. These fundamental length scales in low added salt regime do not depend on whether DNA is in a double stranded or single stranded form. On the other hand, with increasing added salt, the characteristic length scale of low-frequency mode diminishes at low DNA concentrations probably due to dynamical formation of denaturation bubbles and/or fraying in the vicinity of DNA denaturation threshold.

The charge response in the barium vanadium sulfide (BaVS3) single crystals is characterized by dc resistivity and low frequency dielectric spectroscopy. A broad relaxation mode in MHz range with huge dielectric constant ~= 10^6 emerges at the metal-to-insulator phase transition TMI ~= 67 K, weakens with lowering temperature and eventually levels off below the magnetic transition Tchi ~= 30 K. The mean relaxation time is thermally activated in a manner similar to the dc resistivity. These features are interpreted as signatures of the collective charge excitations characteristic for the orbital ordering that gradually develops below TMI and stabilizes at long-range scale below Tchi.
