The finite basis set method is commonly used to calculate atomic spectra, including QED contributions such as bound-electron self-energy. Still, it remains problematic and underexplored for vacuum-polarization calculations. We fill this gap by trying this approach in its application to the calculation of the vacuum-polarization charge density and the Wichmann-Kroll correction to the electron binding energy in a hydrogen-like ion. We study the convergence of the method with different types and sizes of basis sets. We cross-check our results for the Wichmann-Kroll correction by direct integration of the Green's function. As a relevant example, we consider several heavy hydrogen-like ions and evaluate the vacuum polarization correction for $S$ and $P$ electron orbitals.

Computational modelling of passage of high-energy electrons through crystalline media is carried out by means of the relativistic molecular dynamics. The results obtained are compared with the experimental data for 855 MeV electron beam incident on oriented bent ultra-thin (15 microns) silicon and germanium crystals. The simulations have been performed for the geometries of the beam--crystal orientation that correspond (i) to the channeling regime and (ii) to the volume reflection. A comparison with the experiment is carried out in terms of angular distributions of the electrons deflected by the crystals bent with different curvature radii as well as of the spectra of the emitted radiation. For both crystals a good agreement between the simulated and experimentally measured data is reported. The origin of remaining minor discrepancies between theory and experiment is discussed.

We explore the opportunities of using electron scattering by screened Coulomb potential as a tool to retrieve properties of the relativistic vortex beams of electrons, such as their transverse momentum and orbital angular momentum (OAM). We focus on relativistic and ultra-relativistic regimes of the electron energies of at least several MeV and higher, in which the transverse beam momentum is typically much smaller than its longitudinal momentum. Different scattering scenarios for the incident electron beam are considered. In particular, the scattering by a very wide target can be used to probe the electron transverse momentum when its values are larger than 10 keV. The scattering by a target of a width comparable to that of the incident beam allows one to obtain information about the electron OAM. Varying target sizes in the range from couple to hundreds of nanometers, one can in principle distinguish OAM values from several units of $\hbar$ up to thousands and more.

The article discusses the approach for evaluating the innovation index of the products and technologies. The evaluation results can be used to create a warehouse of the object descriptions with significant innovation potential. The model of innovation index computation is based on the concepts of novelty, relevance, and implementability of the object. Formal definitions of these indicators are given and a methodology for their calculation are described. The fuzzy methods to coprocess (incomplete) data from numerous sources and to obtain probabilistic innovation assessments are used. The experimental data of the model check including the calculations of local criteria and global additive evaluation criterion are presented. The cyclical nature of dynamic changes in indicators, their interdependence was established, some general features of the products promotion were found. The obtained experimental data are consistent with expert estimates of the products under study. The analysis of the local criteria used in the research gives grounds to assert the correct use of the additive n-dimensional utility function. The adequacy of assumptions and formal expressions that are used in computational algorithms for selection information for data warehouse is confirmed.

The paper presents a solution for the problem of choosing a method for analytical determining of weight factors for a genetic algorithm additive fitness function. This algorithm is the basis for an evolutionary process, which forms a stable and effective query population in a search engine to obtain highly relevant results. The paper gives a formal description of an algorithm fitness function, which is a weighted sum of three heterogeneous criteria. The selected methods for analytical determining of weight factors are described in detail. It is noted that expert assessment methods are impossible to use. The authors present a research methodology using the experimental results from earlier in the discussed project "Data Warehouse Support on the Base Intellectual Web Crawler and Evolutionary Model for Target Information Selection". There is a description of an initial dataset with data ranges for calculating weights. The calculation order is illustrated by examples. The research results in graphical form demonstrate the fitness function behavior during the genetic algorithm operation using various weighting options.

Understanding the complex chemistry of functional nanomaterials is of fundamental importance. Controlled synthesis and characterization at the atomic level is essential to gain deeper insight into the unique chemical reactivity exhibited by many nanomaterials. Cerium oxide nanoparticles have many industrial and commercial applications, resulting from very strong catalytic, pro-and anti-oxidant activity. However, the identity of the active species and the chemical mechanisms imparted by nanoceria remain elusive, impeding the further development of new applications. Here, we explore the behavior of cerium oxide nanoparticles of different sizes at different temperatures and trace the electronic structure changes by state-of-the-art soft and hard X-ray experiments combined with computational methods. We confirm the absence of the Ce(III) oxidation state at the surface of CeO2nanoparticles, even for particles as small as 2 nm. Synchrotron X-ray absorption experiments at Ce L3and M5edges, combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and small angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) and theoretical calculations demonstrate that in addition to the nanoceria charge stability, the formation of hydroxyl groups at the surface profoundly affects the chemical performance of these nanomaterials

In this paper we present the results of a systematic numerical analysis of the channeling properties of electrons and positrons in oriented straight and periodically bent diamond(110) crystals. We analyse dependence of the intensity of the radiation emitted on the projectile energy as well as on the bending amplitude. The analysis presented is based on the grounds of accurate numerical simulations of the channeling process. The simulation parameters, such as the crystal orientation, thickness and bending parameters of the crystals as well as the energy of the projectiles, were chosen to match those used in past and ongoing experiments. The peculiarities which appear in the radiation spectra are attributed to the interplay of various radiation mechanisms. We introduce a new type of correction for a more accurate description of fullerenes within the spherically symmetric jellium model. This correction represents a pseudopotential which originates from the comparison between an accurate ab initio calculation and the jellium model calculation. It is shown that such a correction to the jellium model allows one to account, at least partly, for the sp2-hybridization of carbon atomic orbitals. Therefore, it may be considered as a more physically meaningful correction as compared with a structureless square-well pseudopotential which has been widely used earlier.

Results of the self-consistent calculation of electronic structure of endohedral fullerene Ar@C$_{60}$ within the Hartree-Fock and the local density approximations are presented. Hartree-Fock approximation is used for the self-consistent description for the first time. It is shown that the accurate account of the exchange interaction between all electrons of the compound leads to the significant modification of the atomic valent shell which causes the noticeable charge redistribution inside the endohedral compound.

Angular resolved photoelectron spectra of metal clusters have been experimentally measured for the first time only recently. These measurements have been performed systematically for sodium clusters in a broad range of cluster sizes. This work attracted a lot of attention and was reported practically at all major international cluster conferences because it revealed a very non-trivial behavior of the angular anisotropy parameter with respect to photon energy and provided a method for probing the angular momentum character of the valence orbitals of free nanoclusters. Initial attempts to explain these observations within single particle approximations fail completely. In this Letter we present a consistent many-body theory for the description of angular resolved photoelectron spectra of metal clusters. Jellium model formalism is employed. Our calculations demonstrate the dominant role of the many-body effects in the formation of angular distributions of photoelectrons emitted from sodium clusters and are in a good agreement with experimental data reported in. The concrete comparison of theory and experiment has been performed for the photoionization of $Na_7^{-}$ and $Na_{19}^{-}$ anions being characterized by the entirely closed shells of delocalized electrons.

The conditions for a spontaneous spin polarization in a quantum wire positioned in a zero magnetic field are analyzed under weak population of one-dimensional subbands that gives rise to the efficient quenching of the kinetic energy by the exchange energy of carriers. The critical linear concentration of carriers above which the quasi one-dimensional gas undergoes a complete spin depolarization is determined by the Hartree-Fock approximation. The dependence of the critical linear concentration on the concentration of carriers is defined to reveal the interplay of the spin depolarization with the evolution of the 0.7 (2e2/h) feature in the quantum conductance staircase from the e2/h to 3/2 (e2/h) values. This dependence is used to study the effect of the hole concentration on the 0.7 (2e2/h) feature in the quantum conductance staircase of the quantum wire prepared inside the p-type silicon quantum well using the split-gate technique. The 1D channel is demonstrated to be spin-polarized at the linear concentration of holes lower than the critical linear concentration, because the 0.7 (2e2/h) feature is close to the value of 0.5 (2e2/h) that indicates the spin degeneracy lifting for the first step of the quantum conductance staircase. The 0.7 (2e2/h) feature is found to take however its normal magnitude when the linear concentration of holes attains the critical value corresponding to the spin depolarization. The variations in the height of the 0.7 (2e2/h) feature observed in the hole quantum conductance staircase that is revealed by the p-type silicon quantum wire seem to be related to the evidences of the quantum conductance staircase obtained by varying the concentration of electrons in the 1D channel prepared inside the GaAs-AlGaAs heterojunction.

Absolute three-photon detachment cross sections are calculated for the fluorine negative ion within the lowest-order perturbation theory. The Dyson equation of the atomic many-body theory is used to obtain the ground-state 2p wavefunction with correct asymptotic behaviour, corresponding to the true (experimental) binding energy. We show that in accordance with the adiabatic theory (Gribakin and Kuchiev 1997 {Phys. Rev. A} {\bf 55} 3760) this is crucial for obtaining absolute values of the multiphoton cross sections. Comparisons with other calculations and experimental data are presented.
