The quantum Zeno effect refers to slowing down of the decay of a quantum system that is affected by frequent measurements. Nowadays, the significance of this paradigm is extended far beyond quantum systems, where it was introduced, finding physical and mathematical analogies in such phenomena as the suppression of output beam decay by sufficiently strong absorption introduced in guiding optical systems. In the latter case, the effect is often termed as macroscopic Zeno effect. Recent studies in optics, where enhanced transparency of the entire system was observed upon the increase of the absorption, were largely focused on the systems obeying parity-time symmetry, hence, the observed effect was attributed to the symmetry breaking. While manifesting certain similarities in the behavior of the transparency of the system with the mentioned studies, the macroscopic Zeno phenomenon reported here in topological photonic system is far more general in nature. In particular, we show that it does not require the existence of exceptional points, and that it is based on the suppression of decay for only a subspace of modes that can propagate in the system, alike the quantum Zeno dynamics. By introducing controlled losses in one of the arms of a topological insulator comprising two closely positioned Su-Schrieffer-Heeger arrays, we demonstrate the macroscopic Zeno effect, which manifests itself in an increase of the transparency of the system with respect to the topological modes created at the interface between two arrays. The phenomenon remains robust against disorder in the non-Hermitian topological regime. In contrast, coupling a topological array with a non-topological one results in a monotonic decrease in output power with increasing absorption.

We study the existence and stability of $π$-solitons on a ring of periodically oscillating waveguides. The array is arranged into Su-Schrieffer-Heeger structure placed on a ring, with additional spacing between two ends of the array. Due to longitudinal oscillations of waveguides, this Floquet structure spends half of the longitudinal period in topological phase, while on the other half it is nontopological. Nevertheless, waveguide oscillations lead to the emergence of anomalous topological $π$-modes at both ends of the structure that strongly couple in our ring geometry, leading to the formation of previously unexplored in-phase and out-of-phase $π$-modes. We study topological solitons bifurcating from such linear $π$-modes and demonstrate how their properties and stability depend on the size of the ring and on spacing between two ends of the array.

We address the properties of such states both in lattices having commensurate and incommensurate geometries (i.e., constructed with Pythagorean and non-Pythagorean twist angles, respectively), in the different regimes that occur below and above the localization-delocalization transition. We find that the threshold power required for the formation of vortex solitons strongly depends on the twist angle and, also, that the families of solitons exhibit intervals where their power is a nearly linear function of the propagation constant and they exhibit strong stability. Also, in the incommensurate phase above the localization-delocalization transition, we found stable embedded vortex solitons whose propagation constants belong to the linear spectral domain of the system.

We introduce a different class of thresholdless three-dimensional soliton states that form in higher-order topological insulators based on a two-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger array of coupled waveguides. The linear spectrum of such structures is characterized by the presence of a topological gap with corner states residing in them. We find that a focusing Kerr nonlinearity allows families of light bullets bifurcating from the linear corner states to exist as stable three-dimensional solitons, which inherit topological protection from their linear corner counterparts and, remarkably, survive even in the presence of considerable disorder. The light bullets exhibit a spatial localization degree that depends strongly on the array dimerization and may feature large temporal widths in the topological gap near the bifurcation point, thus drastically reducing the otherwise strong instabilities caused by higher-order effects.

We address the formation of topological edge solitons in rotating Su-Schrieffer-Heeger waveguide arrays. The linear spectrum of the non-rotating topological array is characterized by the presence of topological gap with two edge states residing in it. Rotation of the array significantly modifies the spectrum and may move these edge states out of the topological gap. Defocusing nonlinearity counteracts this tendency and shifts such modes back into topological gap, where they acquire structure of tails typical for topological edge states. We present rich bifurcation structure for rotating topological solitons and show that they can be stable. Rotation of the topologically trivial array, without edge states in its spectrum, also leads to the appearance of localized edge states, but in a trivial semi-infinite gap. Families of rotating edge solitons bifurcating from the trivial linear edge states exist too and sufficiently strong defocusing nonlinearity can also drive them into the topological gap, qualitatively modifying the structure of their tails.

We study motion of dark solitons in a non-uniform one-dimensional flow of Bose-Einstein condensate. Our approach is based on Hamiltonian mechanics applied to the particle-like behavior of dark solitons in a slightly non-uniform and slowly changing surrounding. In one-dimensional geometry, the condensate's wave function undergoes the jump-like behavior across the soliton and this leads to generation of the counterflow in the background condensate. For correct description of soliton's dynamics, the contributions of this counterflow to the momentum and energy of the soliton are taken into account. The resulting Hamilton equations are reduced to the Newton-like equation for the soliton's path and this Newton equation is solved in several typical situations. The analytical results are confirmed by numerical calculations.

We report the experimental observation of the periodic switching of topological edge states between two dimerized fs-laser written waveguide arrays. Switching occurs due to the overlap of the modal fields of the edge states from topological forbidden gap, when they are simultaneously present in two arrays brought into close proximity. We found that the phenomenon occurs for both strongly and weakly localized edge states and that switching rate increases with decreasing spacing between the topological arrays. When topological arrays are brought in contact with nontopological ones, switching in topological gap does not occur, while one observes either the formation of nearly stationary topological interface mode or strongly asymmetric diffraction into the nontopological array depending on the position of the initial excitation. Switching between topological arrays can be controlled and even completely arrested by increasing the peak power of the input signal, as we observed with different array spacings.

Topological insulators are unique physical structures that are insulators in their bulk, but support currents at their edges which can be unidirectional and topologically protected from scattering on disorder and inhomogeneities. Photonic topological insulators can be crafted in materials that exhibit a strong nonlinear response, thus opening the door to the exploration of the interplay between nonlinearity and topological effects. Among the fascinating new phenomena arising from this interplay is the formation of topological edge solitons -- hybrid asymmetric states localized across and along the interface due to different physical mechanisms. Such solitons have so far been studied only in materials with Kerr-type, or cubic, nonlinearity. Here the first example of the topological edge soliton supported by parametric interactions in $χ^{(2)}$ nonlinear media is presented. Such solitons exist in Floquet topological insulators realized in arrays of helical waveguides made of a phase-matchable $χ^{(2)}$ material. Floquet edge solitons bifurcate from topological edge states in the spectrum of the fundamental frequency wave and remain localized over propagation distances drastically exceeding the helix period, while travelling along the edge of the structure. A theory of such states is developed. It is shown that multicolor solitons in a Floquet system exists in the vicinity of (formally infinite) set of linear resonances determined by the Floquet phase matching conditions. Away from resonance, soliton envelopes can be described by a period-averaged single nonlinear Schrödinger equation with an effective cubic nonlinear coefficient whose magnitude and sign depend on the overall phase-mismatch between the fundamental frequency and second harmonic waves.

We consider an array of straight nonlinear waveguides constituting a two-dimensional square lattice, with a few central layers tilted with respect to the rest of the structure. It is shown that such configuration represents a line defect, in the lattice plane, which is periodically modulated along the propagation direction. In the linear limit, such a system sustains line defect modes, whose number coincides with the number of tilted layers. In the presence of nonlinearity the branches of defect solitons propagating along the defect line bifurcate from each of the linear defect modes. Depending on the effective dispersion induced by the Floquet spectrum of the underline system the bifurcating solitons can be either bright or dark. Dynamics and stability of such solitons are studied numerically.

Higher-order topological insulators (HOTI) are a novel topological phase beyond the framework of the conventional bulk-boundary correspondence. In these peculiar systems, the topologically nontrivial boundary modes are characterized by a co-dimension of at least two. Despite several promising preliminary considerations regarding the impact of nonlinearity in such systems, the flourishing field of experimental HOTI research has thus far been confined to the linear evolution of topological states. As such, the observation of the interplay between nonlinearity and the dynamics of higher-order topological phases in conservative systems remains elusive. In our work, we experimentally demonstrate nonlinear higher-order topological corner states. Our photonic platform enables us to observe nonlinear topological corner states as well as the formation of solitons in such topological structures. Such solitons bifurcate from two edge states belonging to different topological gaps and have bright envelopes of different symmetries: fundamental for one component, and dipole for the other. The formation of dipole solitons is enabled by unique spectral features of the kagome array which allow the simultaneous coexistence of two topological edge states from different gaps at the same boundary. Notably, these states have equal and nearly vanishing group velocities as well as the same sign of the effective dispersion coefficients. We derive envelope equations describing components of dipole solitons and demonstrate in full continuous simulations that such states indeed can survive over hundreds of helix periods without any noticeable radiation into the bulk.

In our work, we experimentally demonstrate a topological system, using a photonic platform, in which the very existence of the topological phase is brought about by nonlinearity. The linear Floquet spectrum of this structure is characterized by the presence of two topological gaps with edge states residing in them. A focusing nonlinearity enables families of topological edge solitons bifurcating from the linear edge states. Such solitons are localized both along and across the edge of the array. Due to the non-monotonic dependence of the propagation constant of the edge states on the Bloch momentum, one can construct topological edge solitons that either propagate in different directions along the same boundary or do not move. This allows us to study collisions of edge solitons moving in the opposite directions. Such solitons always interpenetrate each other without noticeable radiative losses; however, they exhibit a spatial shift that depends on the initial phase difference.

We introduce topological vector edge solitons in a Floquet insulator, consisting of two honeycomb arrays of helical waveguides with opposite directions of rotation in a focusing nonlinear optical medium. Zigzag edges of two arrays placed in contact create a zigzag-zigzag interface between two structures with different topology. A characteristic feature of such a photonic insulator is that, in the linear limit, it simultaneously supports two topologically protected chiral edge states at the interface between the two arrays. In the presence of nonlinearity, either bright or dark scalar Floquet edge soliton can bifurcate from a linear topological edge state. Such solitons are unidirectional and are localized in both directions, along the interface due to nonlinear self-action, and across the interface as being an edge state. The presence of two edge states with equal averaged group velocities enables the existence of stable topological vector edge solitons. In our case, these are nonlinearly coupled bright and dark solitons bifurcating from different branches of the topological Floquet edge states. Here we put forward a new mathematical description of scalar and vector small-amplitude Floquet envelope solitons in the above-mentioned continuous system. Importantly for the design of future photonic devices based on Floquet edge solitons, we find that the latter can be described by nonlinear Schrodinger equations for the mode envelopes obtained by averaging over one rotation period in the evolution coordinate.

We provide the classification of possible wave structures evolving from initially discontinuous profiles for the photon fluid propagating in a normal dispersion fiber. The dynamics of light field is described by the generalized Chen-Lee-Liu equation, which belongs to the family of the nonlinear Schrödinger equations with a self-steepening type term appearing due to retardation of the fiber material response to variations of the electromagnetic signal. This equation is also used in investigations of the dynamics of modulated waves propagating through a single nonlinear transmission network. We describe its periodic solutions and the corresponding Whitham modulation equations. The wave patterns generated by the initial parameter profiles are composed of different building blocks which are presented in detail. It is shown that evolution dynamics in this case is much richer than that for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation. Complete classification of possible wave structures is given for all possible jump conditions at the discontinuity. Our analytic results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

We introduce a class of topological lasers based on the photonic Floquet topological insulator concept. The proposed system is realized as a truncated array of the lasing helical waveguides, where the pseudo-magnetic field arises due to twisting of the waveguides along the propagation direction that breaks the time-reversal symmetry and opens up a topological gap. When sufficient gain is provided in the edge channels of the array then the system lases into the topological edge states. Topological lasing is stable only in certain intervals of the Bloch momenta, that ensure a dynamic, but stable balance between the linear amplification and nonlinear absorption leading to the formation of the breathing edge states. We also illustrate topological robustness of the edge currents by simulating lattice defects and triangular arrangements of the waveguides.

In this paper, we study the evolution of intensive light pulses in nonlinear single-mode fibers. The dynamics of light in such fibers is described by the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the Raman term, due to stimulated Raman self-scattering. It is shown that dispersive shock waves are formed during the evolution of sufficiently intensive pulses. In this case, the situation is much richer than for the nonlinear Schrödinger equation with Kerr nonlinearity only. The Whitham equations are obtained under the assumption that the Raman term can be considered as a small perturbation. These equations describe slow evolution of dispersive shock waves. It is shown that if one takes into account the Raman effect, then dispersive shock waves can asymptotically acquire a stationary profile. The analytical theory is confirmed by numerical calculations.

We provide a classification of the possible flow of two-component Bose-Einstein condensates evolving from initially discontinuous profiles. We consider the situation where the dynamics can be reduced to the consideration of a single polarization mode (also denoted as "magnetic excitation") obeying a system of equations equivalent to the Landau-Lifshitz equation for an easy-plane ferro-magnet. We present the full set of one-phase periodic solutions. The corresponding Whitham modulation equations are obtained together with formulas connecting their solutions with the Riemann invariants of the modulation equations. The problem is not genuinely nonlinear, and this results in a non-single-valued map** of the solutions of the Whitham equations with physical wave patterns as well as to the appearance of new elements --- contact dispersive shock waves --- that are absent in more standard, genuinely nonlinear situations. Our analytic results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

The dynamics of light field is described by the nonlinear Schroedinger (NLS) equation with self-steepening term appearing due to retardation of the fiber material response to variations of the electromagnetic signal. It is shown that evolution dynamics in this case is much richer than that for the NLS equation. Complete classification of possible wave structures is given for all possible jump conditions at the discontinuity.

We consider the space-time evolution of initial discontinuities of depth and flow velocity for an integrable version of the shallow water Boussinesq system introduced by Kaup. We focus on a specific version of this "Kaup-Boussinesq model" for which a flat water surface is modulationally stable, we speak below of "positive dispersion" model. This model also appears as an approximation to the equations governing the dynamics of polarisation waves in two-component Bose-Einstein condensates. We describe its periodic solutions and the corresponding Whitham modulation equations. The self-similar, one-phase wave structures are composed of different building blocks which are studied in detail. This makes it possible to establish a classification of all the possible wave configurations evolving from initial discontinuities. The analytic results are confirmed by numerical simulations.

We investigate the expansion dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate that consists of two components and is initially confined in a quasi-one-dimensional trap. We classify the possible initial states of the two-component condensate by taking into account the non-uniformity of the distributions of its components and construct the corresponding phase diagram in the plane of nonlinear interaction constants. The differential equations that describe the condensate evolution are derived by assuming that the condensate density and velocity depend on the spatial coordinate quadratically and linearly, respectively, what reproduces the initial equilibrium distribution of the condensate in the trap in the Thomas-Fermi approximation. We obtained self-similar solutions of these differential equations for several important special cases and wrote out asymptotic formulas describing the condensate motion on long time scales, when the condensate density becomes so low that the interaction between atoms can be neglected. The problem on the dynamics of immiscible components with the formation of dispersive shock waves was also considered. We compare the numerical solutions of the Gross-Pitaevskii equations with their approximate analytical solutions and study numerically the situations when the analytical method admits no exact solutions.
