On the basis of studies of radiation-induced shape-change of reactor graphite GR-280, through the series of measurements of samples with different orientation of cutting with respect to the direction of extrusion, a conclusion is made about the existence of polycrystal substructural elements - domains. Domains, like graphite as a whole, possess the property of transverse isotropy, but have different amplitudes of shape-change and random orientations of the axes of axial symmetry. The model of graphite, constructed on the basis of the concept of domains allowed to explain from a unified point of view most of existing experimental data. It is shown that the presence of the disoriented domain structure leads to the development of radiation-induced stresses and to the dependence of the shape-change on the size of graphite samples. We derive the relation between the shape-change of finite size samples and the actual shape-change of macro-graphite.

Abstract:
The B(E2; Ii -> If) values for transitions in 71Ga and 73Ga were deduced from a Coulomb excitation experiment at the safe energy of 2.95 MeV/nucleon using post-accelerated beams of 71,73Ga at the REX-ISOLDE on-line isotope mass separator facility. The emitted gamma rays were detected by the MINIBALL-detector array and B(E2; Ii->If) values were obtained from the yields normalized to the known stren…

The emitted gamma rays were detected by the MINIBALL-detector array and B(E2; Ii->If) values were obtained from the yields normalized to the known strength of the 2+ -> 0+ transition in the 120Sn target. The comparison of these new results with the data of less neutron-rich gallium isotopes shows a shift of the E2 collectivity towards lower excitation energy when adding neutrons beyond N = 40. This supports conclusions from previous studies of the gallium isotopes which indicated a structural change in this isotopical chain between N = 40 and N = 42. Combined with recent measurements from collinear laser spectroscopy showing a 1/2- spin and parity for the ground state, the extracted results revealed evidence for a 1/2-; 3/2- doublet near the ground state in 73 31Ga42 differing by at most 0.8 keV in energy.

This review paper is intended to give a useful guide for those who want to apply discrete wavelets in their practice. The notion of wavelets and their use in practical computing and various applications are briefly described, but rigorous proofs of mathematical statements are omitted, and the reader is just referred to corresponding literature. The multiresolution analysis and fast wavelet transform became a standard procedure for dealing with discrete wavelets. The proper choice of a wavelet and use of nonstandard matrix multiplication are often crucial for achievement of a goal. Analysis of various functions with the help of wavelets allows to reveal fractal structures, singularities etc. Wavelet transform of operator expressions helps solve some equations. In practical applications one deals often with the discretized functions, and the problem of stability of wavelet transform and corresponding numerical algorithms becomes important. After discussing all these topics we turn to practical applications of the wavelet machinery. They are so numerous that we have to limit ourselves by some examples only. The authors would be grateful for any comments which improve this review paper and move us closer to the goal proclaimed in the first phrase of the abstract.

Wavelet analysis reveals clustering phenomena in multiparticle production processes. Results of event-by-event studies of some nucleus-nucleus collisions at 158A GeV are reported. The clusterization topology is found to be different in different events. Typical patterns include jets and ring-like structures. They are demonstrated here for five high multiplicity events.

O(N) methods are based on the decay properties of the density matrix in real space, an effect sometimes refered to as near-sightedness. We show, that in addition to this near-sightedness in real space there is also a near-sightedness in Fourier space. Using a basis set with good localization properties in both real and Fourier space such as wavelets, one can exploit both localization properties to obtain a density matrix which exhibits additional sparseness properties compared to the scenario where one has a basis set with real space localization only. We will call this additional sparsity hyper-sparsity. Taking advantage of this hyper-sparsity, it is possible to represent very large quantum mechanical systems in a highly compact way. This can be done both for insulating and metallic systems and for arbitrarily accurate basis sets. We expect that hyper-sparsity will pave the way for O(N) calculations of large systems requiring many basis functions per atom, such as Density Functional calculations.

The Coulomb problem for continuous charge distributions is a central problem in physics. Powerful methods, that scale linearly with system size and that allow us to use different resolutions in different regions of space are therefore highly desirable. Using wavelet based Multi Resolution Analysis we derive for the first time a method which has these properties. The power and accuracy of the method is illustrated by applying it to the calculation of of the electrostatic potential of a full three-dimensional all-electron Uranium dimer.
