The Cd1-xZnxTe semiconductor alloy is a regular system regarding its macroscopic mechanic properties in that its experimental bulk modulus exhibits a linear x-dependence, in line with ab initio predictions. Complexity arises at the bond scale, referring to the intricate Cd1-xZnxTe percolation-type Raman pattern [T. Alhaddad et al., Journal of Applied Physics 133, 065701 (2023)]. This offers an appealing benchmark to test various phonon coupling processes at diverse length scales in a compact multi-oscillator assembly, presently tuned by pressure. At x around 0, an inter-bond long-range/macro electric coupling between the matrix and impurity polar phonons is detuned under pressure. Inversely, at x around 1, an intra-bond short-range/nano mechanic coupling is enforced between the two Zn Te apolar sub-phonons stemming from same and alien percolation-type environments. The pressure-induced macro/nano polar/apolar coupling/decoupling processes are compared within a model of two coupled electric/mechanic harmonic oscillators in terms of a compromise between proximity to resonance and strength of coupling, impacting the degree of mode mixing, with ab initio (apolar case) and analytical (polar case) Raman calculations in support. Notably, the free mechanic coupling at x around 1 opposes the achievement of a phonon exceptional point, manifesting the inhibition of mechanic coupling, earlier evidenced with similar bonds for x smaller than 0.5. Hence, the pressure dependence of a given bond vibration in a disordered alloy basically differs depending on whether the bond is matrix-like, i.e., self-connected in bulk (free coupling), or dispersed, i.e., self-connected in a chain (inhibited coupling). This features pressure-tunable percolation-based on-off phonon switches in complex media.

We report on the pressure evolution of the electronic and crystal structures of the noncentrosymmetric antiferromagnet EuCoGe3. Using a diamond anvil cell, we performed high pressure fluorescence detected near-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the Eu L3, Co K, and Ge K edges and synchrotron powder x-ray diffraction. In the Eu L3 spectrum, both divalent and trivalent Eu peaks are observed from the lowest pressure measurement (~2 GPa). By increasing pressure, the relative intensity of the trivalent Eu peak increases, and an average Eu valence continuously increases from 2.2 at 2 GPa to 2.31 at~50 GPa. On the other hand, no discernible changes are observed in the Co K and Ge K spectra as a function of pressure. With the increase in pressure, lattice parameters continuously decrease without changing I4mm symmetry. Our study revealed a robust divalent Eu state and an unchanged crystal symmetry of EuCoGe3 against pressure.

The (Cd, Be)Te semiconductor alloy that exhibits a dramatic mismatch in bond covalency and stiffness clarifying its vibrational and mechanical properties is used as a benchmark to test the limits of the percolation model (PM) worked out to explain the complex Raman spectra of the related but less contrasted (Zn, Be) chalcogenides. The test is done by way of experiment (x smaller than 0.11) combining Raman scattering with X ray diffraction at high pressure and ab initio calculations (x around 0, 0.5 and 1). The (macroscopic) bulk modulus B drops below the CdTe value on minor Be incorporation, at variance with a linear B versus x increase predicted ab initio, thus hinting at large anharmonic effects in the real crystal. Yet, no anomaly occurs at the microscopic (bond) scale as the regular bimodal PM Raman signal predicted ab initio for the BeTe bond in minority (x around 0 and 0.5) is (barely) detected experimentally. Although at large Be content (x around 1) the same bimodal signal relaxes down to inversion, an unprecedented case, specific pressure dependencies of the regular (x around 0 and 0.5) and inverted (x around 1) BeTe Raman doublets are in line with PM predictions. Hence, the PM applies as such to (Cd, Be)Te albeit in a relaxed form, without further refinement. This enhances the scheme validity as a generic descriptor of phonons in alloys.

We report the possibility to simultaneously perform wide-field nitrogen-vacancy (NV) diamond magnetic microscopy and synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) measurements at high pressure. NV color centers are created on the culet of a diamond anvil which is integrated in a diamond anvil cell for static compression of the sample. The optically detected spin resonance of the NV centers is used to map the stray magnetic field produced by the sample magnetization. Using this combined scheme, the magnetic and structural behaviors can be simultaneously measured. As a proof-of-principle, we record the correlated α-Fe to ε-Fe structural and magnetic transitions of iron that occur here between 15 and 20 GPa at 300 K.

The generic 1-bond:2-mode percolation type Raman signal inherent to the short bond of common (A,B)C semiconductor mixed crystals with zincblende (cubic) structure is exploited as a sensitive mesoscope to explore how various ZnSe-based systems engage their pressure-induced structural transition (to rock-salt) at the sub-macroscopic scale with a focus on ZnCdSe. The Raman doublet, that distinguishes between the AC- and BC-like environments of the short bond, is reactive to pressure: either it closes (ZnBeSe, ZnSeS) or it opens (ZnCdSe), depending on the hardening rates of the two environments under pressure. A partition of II-VI and III-V mixed crystals is accordingly outlined. Of special interest is the closure case, in which the system resonantly stabilizes ante transition at its exceptional point corresponding to a virtual decoupling, by overdam**, of the two oscillators forming the Raman doublet. At this limit, the chain-connected bonds of the short species (taken as the minor one) freeze along the chain into a rigid backbone. This reveals a capacity behind alloying to reduce the thermal conductivity.

We have studied the amorphization process of SnI4 up to 26.8GPa with unprecedented experimental details by combining Sn and I K edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy and powder X-ray diffraction. Standards and reverse Monte Carlo extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) refinements confirm that the SnI4 tetrahedron is a fundamental structural unit that is preserved through the crystalline phase-I to crystalline phase-II transition about 7 to 10GPa and then in the amorphous phase that appears above 20GPa. Up to now unexploited Iodine EXAFS reveals to be extremely informative and confirms the formation of iodine iodine short bonds close to 2.85Å in the amorphous phase at 26.8 GPa. A coordination number increase of Sn in the crystalline phase-II appears to be excluded, while the deformation of the tetrahedral units proceeds through a flattening that keeps the average I-Sn-I angle close to 109.5°. Moreover, we put in evidence the impact of pressure on the Sn near edge structure under competing geometrical and electronic effects.

Metallization and dissociation are key transformations in diatomic molecules at high densities particularly significant for modeling giant planets. Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy and atomistic modeling, we demonstrate that in halogens, the formation of a \textit{connected} molecular structure takes place at pressures well below metallization. Here we show that the iodine diatomic molecule first elongates of $\sim$0.007 Å~up to a critical pressure of $P_c$ $\backsim$7~GPa develo** bonds between molecules. Then its length continuously decreases with pressure up to 15-20~GPa. Universal trends in halogens are shown and allow to predict for chlorine a pressure of 42$\pm$8~GPa for molecular bond-length reversal. Our findings tackle the molecule invariability paradigm in diatomic molecular phases at high pressures and may be generalized to other abundant diatomic molecules in the universe, including hydrogen.

X-ray diffraction studies to ~90 GPa at room temperature show that Fe$_{2}$TiO$_{4}$ ferrous inverse spinel undergoes the following sequence of structural transitions : cubic (Fd3m) to tetragonal (I41/amd)to orthorhombic(Cmcm) to orthorhombic(Pmma),at the indicated onset transition pressures. Within the Cmcm phase, site-specific spin crossover is initiated and involves only highly distorted octahedral sites constituting ~25% of all Fe locations. This is manifest as a steeper volume decrease of dV/V0 ~ 3.5% beyond ~40 GPa and an emergent diamagnetic component discerned in 57Fe Mössbauer spectroscopy at variable cryogenic temperatures. A subsequent Cmcm to Pmma Fe/Ti disorder-order reconfiguration is facilitated at 6-fold coordinated (octahedral) sites. The rest of the high-spin Fe in 6-fold and 8-fold coordinated sites (~75% abundance) in the Pmma phase exhibit average saturation internal magnetic fields of H$_{hf}$ ~ 42 T to ~90 GPa, typical of spin-only (orbitally quenched) Fermi-contact values. By contrast average H$_{hf}$ ~ 20 T values, signifying unquenched orbital moments, occur below the 40-45 GPa spin-crossover initiation regime in the Cmcm phase. Therefore site-specific spin crossover invokes a cooperative lattice response and polyhedral distortions at the rest of the high-spin Fe sites, translating to 3d level (sub-band) changes and consequential orbital moment quenching. Near ~90 GPa Fe$_{2}$TiO$_{4}$ is a partially spin-converted chemically ordered Pmma post-spinel structure having a persistent charge gap of ~100 meV. Despite structural symmetry changes, partial spin crossover and lattice compressibility resulting in a ~33% total reduction in unit-cell volume and corresponding 3d bandwidth broadening, strong electron correlations persist at high densification.

It was found that the crystal structure is stable at least to 82 GPa, though a significant change in compressibility has been observed above 50 GPa. The changes in the structural properties are found to be on a par with a sluggish Fe3+ high- to low-spin (HS-LS) transition (S=5/2 to S=1/2) starting at 50 GPa and not completed even at ~100 GPa. The HS-LS transition is accompanied by an appreciable resistance decrease remaining a semiconductor up to 115 GPa and is not expected to be metallic even at about 200 GPa. The observed feature of the pressure-induced HS-LS transition is not an ordinary behavior of ferric oxides at high pressures. The effect of Fe3+ nearest and next nearest neighbors on the features of the spin crossover is discussed.

We present a detailed NMR study of the insulator to metal transition induced by an applied pressure $p$ in the A15 phase of Cs$_{3}$C$_{60}$. We evidence that the insulating antiferromagnetic (AF) and superconducting (SC) phases only coexist in a narrow $p$ range. At fixed $p$, in the metallic state above the SC transition $T_c$, the $^{133}$Cs and $^{13}$C NMR spin lattice relaxation data are seemingly governed by a pseudogap like feature. We prove that this feature, also seen in the $^{133}$Cs NMR shift data is rather a signature of the Mott transition, which broadens and smears out progressively for increasing $(p,T)$. The analysis of the variation of the quadrupole splitting $ν_{Q}$ of the $^{133}$Cs NMR spectrum precludes any cell symmetry change at the Mott transition and only monitors a weak variation of lattice parameter. These results open an opportunity to consider theoretically the Mott transition in a multiorbital three dimensional system well beyond its critical point.

Using synchrotron based X-ray diffraction and emission spectroscopy, the evolution of the lattice and spin moment in the chiral magnet MnGe was investigated in the paramagnetic state and under pressures up to 38 GPa. The collapse of spin-moment takes place in two steps. A first-order transition with a huge hysteresis around 7 GPa transforms the system from the high-spin at ambient pressure to a low-spin state. The coexistence of spin-states and observation of history-depending irreversibility is explained as effect of long-range elastic strains mediated by magnetovolume coupling. Only in a second transition, at about 23 GPa, the spin-moment collapses.

New insight into the superconducting properties of HgBa2CuO4 (Hg-1201) cuprates is provided by combined measurements of the electrical resistivity and single crystal X-ray diffraction under pressure. The changes induced by increasing pressure up to 20GPa in optimally doped single crystals were investigated. The resistivity measurements as a function of temperature show a metallic behavior up to ~10GPa that gradually passes to an insulating state, typical of charge ordering, that totally suppresses superconductivity above 13GPa. The changes in resistivity are accompanied by the apparition of sharp Bragg peaks in the X-ray diffraction patterns indicating that the charge ordering is accompanied by a 3D oxygen ordering appearing at 10GPa of wavevector [0.25, 0, L]. As pressure induces a charge transfer of about 0.02 at 10GPa, our results are the first observation of charge order competing with superconductivity that develops in the over-doped region of the phase diagram of a cuprate.

The local environment of nickel atoms in Y NiO3 across the pressure- induced insulator to metal (IM) transition was studied using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) supported by ab initio calculations. The monotonic contraction of the NiO6 units under applied pressure observed up to 13 GPa, stops in a limited pressure domain around 14 GPa, before resuming above 16 GPa. In this narrow pressure range, crystallographic modifications basically occur in the medium/long range, not in the NiO6 octahedron, whereas the evolution of the near-edge XAS features can be associated to metallization. Ab initio calculations show that these features are related to medium range order, provided that the Ni-O-Ni angle enables a proper overlap of the Ni eg and O 2p orbitals. Metallization is then not directly related to modifications in the average local geometry of the NiO6 units but more likely to an inter-octahedra rearrangement. These outcomes provides evidences of the bandwidth driven nature of the IM transition.

V2O3 is an archetypal system for the study of correlation induced, Mott-Hubbard metal-insulator transitions. Despite decades of extensive investigations, the accurate description of its electronic properties remains an open problem in the physics of strongly correlated materials, also because of the lack of detailed experimental data on its electronic structure over the whole phase diagram. We present here a high resolution X-ray absorption spectroscopy study at the V K-edge of (V(1-x)Crx)2O3 to probe its electronic structure as a function of temperature, do** and pressure, providing an accurate picture of the electronic changes over the whole phase diagram. We also discuss the relevance of the parallel evolution of the lattice parameters, determined with X-ray diffraction. This allows us to draw two conclusions of general interest: first, the transition under pressure presents peculiar properties, related to a more continuous evolution of the lattice and electronic structure; second, the lattice mismatch is a good parameter describing the strength of the first order transition, and is consequently related to the tendency of the system towards the coexistence of different phases. Our results show that the evolution of the electronic structure while approaching a phase transition, and not only while crossing it, is also a key element to unveil the underlying physical mechanisms of Mott materials .

Using X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), we studied the local structure in LaMnO3 under applied pressure across and well above the insulator to metal (IM) transition. A hysteretic behavior points to the coexistence of two phases within a large pressure range (7 to 25 GPa). The ambient phase with highly Jahn-Teller (JT) distorted MnO6 octahedra is progressively substituted by a new phase with less-distorted JT MnO6 units. The electronic delocalization leading to the IM transition is finger-printed from the pre-edge XAS structure around 30 GPa. We observed that the phase transition takes place without any significant reduction of the JT distortion. This entails band-overlap as the driving mechanism of the IM transition.

Here we unveil for the first time the MIT in Cr-doped V2O3 with submicron lateral resolution: with decreasing temperature, microscopic domains become metallic and coexist with an insulating background. This explains why the associated PM phase is actually a poor metal. The phase separation can be associated with a thermodynamic instability near the transition. This instability is reduced by pressure which drives a genuine Mott transition to an eventually homogeneous metallic state.

The changes in the electronic structure of V2O3 across the metal-insulator transition induced by temperature, do** and pressure are identified using high resolution x-ray absorption spectroscopy at the V pre K-edge. Contrary to what has been taken for granted so far, the metallic phase reached under pressure is shown to differ from the one obtained by changing do** or temperature. Using a novel computational scheme, we relate this effect to the role and occupancy of the a1g orbitals. This finding unveils the inequivalence of different routes across the Mott transition in V2O3

Abstract:
We present a first experiment combining high pression and coherent X-ray diffraction. By using a dedicated diamond anvil cell, we show that the degree of coherence of the X-ray beam is preserved when the X-ray beam passes through the diamond cell. This observation opens the possibility of studying the dynamics of slow fluctuations under high pressure.

The high pressure phase diagram of CsC8 graphite intercalated compound has been investigated at ambient temperature up to 32 GPa. Combining X-ray and neutron diffraction, Raman and X- ray absorption spectroscopies, we report for the first time that CsC8, when pressurized, undergoes phase transitions around 2.0, 4.8 and 8 GPa. Possible candidate lattice structures and the transition mechanism involved are proposed. We show that the observed transitions involve the structural re- arrangement in the Cs sub-network while the distance between the graphitic layers is continuously reduced at least up to 8.9 GPa. Around 8 GPa, important modifications of signatures of the electronic structure measured by Raman and X-ray absorption spectroscopies evidence the onset of a new transition.

We present a high-pressure x-ray diffuse scattering study of the ABO$_3$ ferroelectric perovskites BaTiO_3 and KNbO_3. The well-known diffuse lines are observed in all the phases studied. In KNbO_3, we show that the lines are present up to 21.8 GPa, with constant width and a slightly decreasing intensity. At variance, the intensity of the diffuse lines observed in the cubic phase of BaTiO_3 linearly decreases to zero at $\sim 11$ GPa. These results are discussed with respect to x-ray absorption measurements, which leads to the conclusion that the diffuse lines are only observed when the B atom is off the center of the oxygen tetrahedron. The role of such disorder on the ferroelectric instability of perovskites is discussed.

For pressures below 8 GPa, no change is detected within the MnO6 octahedra. Above this pressure a continuous reduction of the long Mn-O distance takes place, however the octahedral distortion persists over the whole pressure range. At 15.3 GPa the average Jahn-Teller splitting of the distances is reduced by about one third, indicating that a total removal of the local Jahn-Teller distortion would occur only for pressures around 30 GPa, where metallization is reported to take place. A hysteresis in the long distance reduction is observed down to ambient pressure, suggesting the coexistence of MnO6 distorted and undistorted units.

We report on the most complete investigation to date of the 4f-electron properties at the gamma-alpha transition in elemental Ce by resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS). The Ce 2p3d-RIXS spectra were measured directly in the bulk material as a function of pressure through the transition. The spectra were simulated within the Anderson impurity model. The occupation number nf was derived from the calculations in both gamma- and alpha-phases in the ground state along with the f doubleoccupancy. We find that the electronic structure changes result mainly from band formation of 4f electrons which concurs with reduced electron correlation and increased Kondo screening at high pressure.

At this concentration, substitutional 3d transition metals and alloys exhibit strong moment-volume coupling phenomena and associated magnetovolume instabilities, otherwise known as the Invar effect. For this reason, Fe3C is also expected to incorporate a strong magnetovolume instability, and therefore, we examine the pressure dependence of the of the K edge x-ray magnetic circular dichroism in Fe3C at ambient temperature and pressures up to 20 GPa. We and clear evidence for a high-moment to low-moment transition at about 10 GPa.

The present paper demonstrates the feasibility of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) at high pressure at the Fe-K edge on the ID24 energy dispersive beamline of the ESRF. In 3d transition metals, performing experiments at the hard X-ray K-edge rather than at the magnetically interesting soft X-ray L-edges represents, the only way to access the high pressure regime obtainable with Diamond Anvil Cells. The simultaneous availability of a local structure (XAS) and of a magnetic (XMCD) probe on the sample in identical thermodynamical conditions is essential to study correlations between local structural and magnetic properties. We briefly summarize the state of the art theoretical understanding of K-edge XMCD data, then illustrate the setup of beamline ID24 for high pressure XMCD experiments and underline the conditions required to perform measurements at the K-edges of 3d transition metals. Finally, we present two examples of recent high pressure results at the Fe-K edge in pure Fe and Fe3O4 powder.

Energy dispersive X-ray diffraction was used to study the compression behaviour of UMn2Ge2 in a diamond anvil cell. The sample was studied up to static pressure of 26 GPa and a reversible structural phase transition was observed at a pressure of ~ 16.1 GPa. Unit cell parameters were determined up to 12.4 GPa and the calculated cell volumes were found to be well reproduced by a Murnaghan equation of state with K0 = 73.5 GPa and K' = 11.4. The structure of the high pressure phase above 16.0 GPa is quite complicated with very broad lines and could not be unambiguously determined with the available instrument resolution.

We have studied the high-pressure iron bcc to hcp phase transition by simultaneous X-ray Magnetic Circular Dichroism (XMCD) and X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) with an X-ray dispersive spectrometer. The combination of the two techniques allows us to obtain simultaneously information on both the structure and the magnetic state of Iron under pressure. The magnetic and structural transitions simultaneously observed are sharp. Both are of first order in agreement with theoretical prediction. The pressure domain of the transition observed (2.4 $\pm$ 0.2 GPa) is narrower than that usually cited in the literature (8 GPa). Our data indicate that the magnetic transition slightly precedes the structural one, suggesting that the origin of the instability of the bcc phase in iron with increasing pressure is to be attributed to the effect of pressure on magnetism as predicted by spin-polarized full potential total energy calculations.

XAS measurements indicate four-fold to six-fold coordination changes for both cations. The two local coordination transformations occur at different rates but appear to be coupled. A reversible transition to a high pressure crystalline form occurs around 8 GPa. At a pressure of about 12 GPa, the system mainly consists of octahedral gallium atoms and a mixture of arsenic in four-fold and six-fold coordinations. A second transition to a highly disordered material with both cations in six-fold coordination occurs at higher pressures and is irreversible.

EXAFS spectroscopy experiments have been carried out on quartz-like GaAsO4 and AlAsO4 at high pressure and room temperature. It has been shown that these materials exhibit two structural phase transitions; the first transition to a high pressure crystalline form occurs at 9 GPa and is reversible upon decompression, whereas the second transition occurs at higher pressures and is irreversible. In GaAsO4, EXAFS measurements agree with the predicted transition from four- to six-fold coordination of oxygen atoms around the cations, but the two local coordination transformations are not dissociated; in fact, both As and Ga atoms exhibit a coordination change at the onset of the first phase transition, the rate of transformation being significantly higher for Ga atoms. In both cases, the average bond length increases very rapidly with pressure thus yielding the first compression stage after the transition. In the second stage, the average bond lengths increase slowly, ultimately reaching six-fold coordination above 28 GPa and 24 GPa for As and Ga respectively. The behaviour of the As K-edge EXAFS is the same for both compounds, and enables us to link the behaviour of Ga and Al atoms. The local transformations are well described and a direct link with phosphate berlinites seems timely.
