A note on the approximation by a sum of two algebras
Abstract: We consider the problem of approximation of a continuous function $f$ defined on a compact metric space $X$ by elements from a sum of two algebras. We prove a de la Vallée Poussin type theorem, which estimates the approximation error $E(f)$ from below. We also obtain a duality formula for the precise computation of $E(f)$.

Measure theoretic results for approximation by neural networks with limited weights
Abstract: In this paper, we study approximation properties of single hidden layer neural networks with weights varying on finitely many directions and thresholds from an open interval. We obtain a necessary and at the same time sufficient measure theoretic condition for density of such networks in the space of continuous functions. Further, we prove a density result for neural networks with a specifically c… ▽ More

A Chebyshev type alternation theorem for best approximation by a sum of two algebras
Abstract: Let $X$ be a compact metric space, $C(X)$ be the space of continuous real-valued functions on $X$, and $A_1$, $A_2$ be two closed subalgebras of $C(X)$ containing constant functions. We consider the problem of approximation of a function $f\in C(X)$ by elements from $A_1+A_2$. We prove a Chebyshev type alternation theorem for a function $u_0\in A_1+A_2$ to be a best approximation to $f$.

Approximation capability of two hidden layer feedforward neural networks with fixed weights
Abstract: We algorithmically construct a two hidden layer feedforward neural network (TLFN) model with the weights fixed as the unit coordinate vectors of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space and having $3d+2$ number of hidden neurons in total, which can approximate any continuous $d$-variable function with an arbitrary precision. This result, in particular, shows an advantage of the TLFN model over the sing… ▽ More

A three layer neural network can represent any multivariate function
Abstract: In 1987, Hecht-Nielsen showed that any continuous multivariate function can be implemented by a certain type three-layer neural network. This result was very much discussed in neural network literature. In this paper we prove that not only continuous functions but also all discontinuous functions can be implemented by such neural networks.

Notes on ridge functions and neural networks
Abstract: These notes are about ridge functions. Recent years have witnessed a flurry of interest in these functions. Ridge functions appear in various fields and under various guises. They appear in fields as diverse as partial differential equations (where they are called plane waves), computerized tomography and statistics. These functions are also the underpinnings of many central models in neural netwo… ▽ More

A representation problem for smooth sums of ridge functions
Abstract: In this paper we prove that if a multivariate function of a certain smoothness class is represented by a sum of $k$ arbitrarily behaved ridge functions, then it can be represented by a sum of $k$ ridge functions of the same smoothness class and a polynomial of degree at most $k-1$. This solves the problem posed by A. Pinkus in his monograph "Ridge Functions" up to a multivariate polynomial.

On the approximation by single hidden layer feedforward neural networks with fixed weights
Abstract: Feedforward neural networks have wide applicability in various disciplines of science due to their universal approximation property. Some authors have shown that single hidden layer feedforward neural networks (SLFNs) with fixed weights still possess the universal approximation property provided that approximated functions are univariate. But this phenomenon does not lay any restrictions on the nu… ▽ More

A note on the equioscillation theorem for best ridge function approximation
Abstract: We consider the approximation of a continuous function, defined on a compact set of the $d$-dimensional Euclidean space, by sums of two ridge functions. We obtain a necessary and sufficient condition for such a sum to be a best approximation. The result resembles the classical Chebyshev equioscillation theorem for polynomial approximation.

A single hidden layer feedforward network with only one neuron in the hidden layer can approximate any univariate function
Abstract: The possibility of approximating a continuous function on a compact subset of the real line by a feedforward single hidden layer neural network with a sigmoidal activation function has been studied in many papers. Such networks can approximate an arbitrary continuous function provided that an unlimited number of neurons in a hidden layer is permitted. In this paper, we consider constructive approx… ▽ More

Abstract: We consider the problem of the representation of real continuous functions by linear superpositions $\sum_{i=1}^{k}g_{i}\circ p_{i}$ with continuous $g_{i}$ and $p_{i}$. This problem was considered by many authors. But complete, and at the same time explicit and practical solutions to the problem was given only for the case $k=2$.
