Abstract:
In this paper, we prove a formula of Grauert-Riemenschneider canonical sheaf and log canonical thresholds for a general residual intersection as well as an equality of minimal log discrepancies under a general link. We also prove an evidence that MJ-singularities can be preserved under a general residual intersection.

Simultaneous observations of the lines enabled us to accurately derive intensity ratios with less systematic errors. Boltzmann plots indicate there are two temperature components: cold ($\sim$ 20 K) and warm ($\sim$ 100 K). Typical intensity ratios of Tmb(2,2)/Tmb(1,1), Tmb(4,4)/Tmb(2,2), Tmb(5,5)/Tmb(4,4), and Tmb(6,6)/Tmb(3,3) were 0.71, 0.45, 0.65, and 0.17, respectively. These line ratios correspond to diversity of rotational temperature, which results from mixing of the two temperature components.

We present a multi-wavelength analysis of five submillimeter sources (S_1.1mm = 0.54-2.02 mJy) that were detected during our 1.1-mm-deep continuum survey in the SXDF-UDS-CANDELS field (2 arcmin^2, 1sigma = 0.055 mJy beam^-1) using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The two brightest sources correspond to a known single-dish (AzTEC) selected bright submillimeter galaxy (SMG), whereas the remaining three are faint SMGs newly uncovered by ALMA. If we exclude the two brightest sources, the contribution of the ALMA-detected faint SMGs to the infrared extragalactic background light is estimated to be ~ 4.1^{+5.4}_{-3.0} Jy deg^{-2}, which corresponds to ~ 16^{+22}_{-12}% of the infrared extragalactic background light. This suggests that their contribution to the infrared extragalactic background light is as large as that of bright SMGs. We identified multi-wavelength counterparts of the five ALMA sources. One of the sources (SXDF-ALMA3) is extremely faint in the optical to near-infrared region despite its infrared luminosity (L_IR ~ 1e12 L_sun or SFR ~ 100 M_sun yr^{-1}). By fitting the spectral energy distributions (SEDs) at the optical-to-near-infrared wavelengths of the remaining four ALMA sources, we obtained the photometric redshifts (z_photo) and stellar masses (M_*): z_photo ~ 1.3-2.5, M_* ~ (3.5-9.5)e10 M_sun. We also derived their star formation rates (SFRs) and specific SFRs (sSFRs) as ~ 30-200 M_sun yr^{-1} and ~ 0.8-2 Gyr^{-1}, respectively. These values imply that they are main-sequence star-forming galaxies.

The most intense emission was detected toward the Orion KL region. The integrated intensity ratio between CO (J=4-3) and CO (J=1-0) was derived using data from the Columbia-Univ. de Chile CO survey, which was carried out with a comparable angular resolution. The ratio was r_{4-3/1-0} ~ 0.2 in the southern region of the cloud and 0.4-0.8 at star forming regions. We found a trend that the ratio shows higher value at edges of the cloud. In particular the ratio at the north-eastern edge of the cloud at (l, b) = (208.375 deg, -19.0 deg) shows the specific highest value of 1.1. The physical condition of the molecular gas in the cloud was estimated by non-LTE calculation. The result indicates that the kinetic temperature has a gradient from north (Tkin=80 K) to south (20 K). The estimation shows that the gas associated with the edge of the cloud is warm (Tkin~60 K), dense (n_{H_2}~10^4 cm^{-3}), and optically thin, which may be explained by heating and swee** of interstellar materials from OB clusters.

We demonstrate the effects of electronic band structure tuning (band engineering) on the dielectric properties by varying the concentration of metallic constituents. Our calculations reveal that bulk plasma frequency, onset of interband transitions, width of bulk plasmon resonance and cross-over frequency, can be tuned flexibly in visible spectrum region by varying the amount of Zr concentration in Ti1-xZrxN alloy system. We found that low threshold interband energy onset (~1.95 eV) leads to high losses in Ti rich compounds than that of ZrN which points to lower losses.

The main aim of this study is to scrutinize promising plasmonic materials by understanding their electronic structure and correlating them to the optical properties of selected refractory materials. For this purpose, the electronic and optical properties of the conductive ceramics TiC, ZrC, HfC, TaC, WC, TiN, ZrN, HfN, TaN, and WN are studied systematically by means of first-principles density functional theory. A full ab initio procedure to calculate plasma frequency from the electronic band structure is discussed. The dielectric functions are calculated by including electronic interband and intraband transitions. Our calculations confirm that transition metal nitrides, such as TiN, ZrN, and HfN, are the strongest candidates, exhibiting performance comparable to that of conventional noble metals in the visible to the near-infrared regions. On the other hand, carbides are not suitable for plasmonic applications because they show very large losses in the same regions. From our calculated dielectric functions, the scattering and absorption efficiencies of nanoparticles made of these refractory materials are evaluated. It is revealed that TiN and TaC are the best candidate materials for applications in photothermal energy conversion over a broad spectral region. Furthermore, quality factors for localized surface plasmon resonance and surface plasmon polaritons are calculated to compare quantitative performances, and ZrN and HfN are found to be comparable to conventional plasmonic metals such as silver and gold

We propose local distributional smoothness (LDS), a new notion of smoothness for statistical model that can be used as a regularization term to promote the smoothness of the model distribution. We named the LDS based regularization as virtual adversarial training (VAT). The LDS of a model at an input datapoint is defined as the KL-divergence based robustness of the model distribution against local perturbation around the datapoint. VAT resembles adversarial training, but distinguishes itself in that it determines the adversarial direction from the model distribution alone without using the label information, making it applicable to semi-supervised learning. The computational cost for VAT is relatively low. For neural network, the approximated gradient of the LDS can be computed with no more than three pairs of forward and back propagations. When we applied our technique to supervised and semi-supervised learning for the MNIST dataset, it outperformed all the training methods other than the current state of the art method, which is based on a highly advanced generative model. We also applied our method to SVHN and NORB, and confirmed our method's superior performance over the current state of the art semi-supervised method applied to these datasets.

We report comprehensive studies of the crystallographic, magnetic, and thermal properties of a spinel-type magnetically frustrated compound, CoAl2O4, and a magnetically diluted system,Co1-xZnxAl2O4. These studies revealed the effects of dilution and disorder when the tetrahedral magnetic Co ion was replaced by the nonmagnetic Zn ion. Low-temperature anomalies were observed in magnetic susceptibility at x < 0.6. A multicritical point was apparent at T = 3.4 K and x = 0.12, where the antiferromagnetic, spin glass-like, and paramagnetic phases met. At that point, the quenched ferromagnetic component induced by a magnetic field during cooling was sharply enhanced and was observable below x = 0.6. Around x = 0.6, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat were described by temperature power laws, chi ~ C/T ~ T-d, in accord with the site percolation threshold of the diamond lattice. This behavior is reminiscent of a quantum critical singularity. We propose an x-temperature phase diagram in the range 0 < x < 1 for Co1-xZnxAl2O4. The transition temperature of CoAl2O4 determined from magnetic susceptibility measured under hydrostatic pressure increased with increasing pressure.

As a technology to read brain states from measurable brain activities, brain decoding are widely applied in industries and medical sciences. In spite of high demands in these applications for a universal decoder that can be applied to all individuals simultaneously, large variation in brain activities across individuals has limited the scope of many studies to the development of individual-specific decoders. In this study, we used deep neural network (DNN), a nonlinear hierarchical model, to construct a subject-transfer decoder. Our decoder is the first successful DNN-based subject-transfer decoder. When applied to a large-scale functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) database, our DNN-based decoder achieved higher decoding accuracy than other baseline methods, including support vector machine (SVM). In order to analyze the knowledge acquired by this decoder, we applied principal sensitivity analysis (PSA) to the decoder and visualized the discriminative features that are common to all subjects in the dataset. Our PSA successfully visualized the subject-independent features contributing to the subject-transferability of the trained decoder.

Engineering plasmonic metamaterials with anisotropic optical dispersion enables us to tailor the properties of metamaterial-based waveguides. We investigate plasmonic waveguides with dielectric cores and multilayer metal-dielectric claddings with hyperbolic dispersion. Without using any homogenization, we calculate the resonant eigenmodes of the finite-width cladding layers, and find agreement with the resonant features in the dispersion of the cladded waveguides. We show that at the resonant widths, the propagating modes of the waveguides are coupled to the cladding eigenmodes and hence, are strongly absorbed. By avoiding the resonant widths in the design of the actual waveguides, the strong absorption can be eliminated.

The background continuum source, whose flux density was ~50 mJy, could not be resolved with the VLA beam of ~< 0."09 x 0."08. All ammonia absorption lines have two distinct velocity components: one is at the systemic velocity and the other is blueshifted, and both components are aligned along the nuclear jets. For the systemic components, the relatively low temperature gas is extended more than the high temperature gas. The blueshifted NH3(3,3) emission can be regarded as ammonia masers associated with shocks by strong winds probably from newly formed massive stars or supernova explosions in dense clouds in the nuclear megamaser disk. Using para-NH3(1,1), (2,2), (4,4) and (5,5) lines with VLA, we derived the rotational temperature Trot = 120 +- 12 K and 157 +- 19 K for the systemic and blueshifted components, respectively. The total column densities of NH3(0,0)-(6,6), assuming Tex ~Trot, were (8.85+-0.70) x 10^16 cm^-2 and (4.47+-0.78) x 10^16 cm-2 for the systemic and blueshifted components, respectively. The fractional abundance of NH3 relative to molecular hydrogen H2 for the systemic and blueshifted was [NH3]/[H2]=1.3x10^-7 and 6.5 x 10^-8, respectively. We also found the F = 4-4 and F = 5-5 doublet lines of OH 2{Pi}3/2 J = 9/2 in absorption, which could be fitted by two velocity components, systemic and redshifted components. The rotational temperature of OH was estimated to be Trot,OH >~ 175 K, tracing hot gas associated with the interaction of the fast nuclear outflow with dense molecular material around the nucleus.

We obtain the condition of the degree and the dimension for the singularities of the jet schemes to be of dense $F$-regular type.
This provides us with examples of singular varieties whose $m$-jet schemes have rational singularities for every $m$.

By introducing new log-canonical threshold and minimal log-discrepancy by means of Mather discrepancy instead of usual discrepancy of canonical divisors, we obtain the formulas of the new log-canonical threshold in terms of arc spaces, inversion of adjunction for wider class of singularities than the known one, lower seimicontinuity of the new minimal log-discrepancy and the affirmative answer to a conjecture of Shokurov type; One advantage of the new invariants is that these are defined for arbitrary varieties (without q-Gorenstein property); These results include the known results for usual log-canonical threshold and minimal log-discrepancy.

This scheme is basically equivalent to the one proposed in 2001, but it is improved in the aspects of computational costs and its applicability range; it can treat a low-density electron system with a dielectric catastrophe. If it is applied to semiconductors and insulators, we find that the obtained quasiparticle dispersion is virtually the same as that in the one-shot $GW$ approximation (or $G_0W_0$A), indicating that the $G_0W_0$A actually takes proper account of both vertex and high-order self-energy corrections in a mutually cancelling manner.

Plasmonics is a research area merging the fields of optics and nanoelectronics by confining light with relatively large free-space wavelength to the nanometer scale - thereby enabling a family of novel devices. Current plasmonic devices at telecommunication and optical frequencies face significant challenges due to losses encountered in the constituent plasmonic materials. These large losses seriously limit the practicality of these metals for many novel applications. This paper provides an overview of alternative plasmonic materials along with motivation for each material choice and important aspects of fabrication. A comparative study of various materials including metals, metal alloys and heavily doped semiconductors is presented. The performance of each material is evaluated based on quality factors defined for each class of plasmonic devices. Most importantly, this paper outlines an approach for realizing optimal plasmonic material properties for specific frequencies and applications, thereby providing a reference for those searching for better plasmonic materials.

We have synthesized a large amount of boron-doped multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) by hot-filament chemical vapor deposition. The synthesis was carried out in a flask using a methanol solution of boric acid as a source material. The scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and micro-Raman spectroscopy were performed to evaluate the structural properties of the obtained MWNTs. In order to evaluate the electrical properties, temperature dependence of resistivity was measured in an individual MWNTs with four metal electrodes. The Ramman shifts suggest carrier injection into the boron-doped MWNTs, but the resistivity of the MWNTs was high and increased strongly with decreasing temperature. Defects induced by the plasma may cause this enhanced resistivity.

In contrast to weakly-coupled IJJs in Bi2212, significant deviations from the thermally activated escape model of a single-stack Josephson junction were observed in their switching current distributions, P(I), due to the strongly-coupled nature of the Eu123 IJJs, The P(I) of the two IJJs are found to be independent of temperature, below 1.4 K and 4.2 K, respectively; which indicates the observation of macroscopic quantum tunneling at high temperatures of liquid He.

The Nash problem on arc families is affirmatively answered for a toric variety by Ishii and Kollar's paper which also shows the negative answer for general case. The Nash problem is one of questions about the relation between arc families and valuations. In this paper, the relation is described clearly for a toric variety. The arc space of a toric variety admits an action of the group scheme determined by the torus. Each orbit on the arc space corresponds to a lattice point in the cone and therefore corresponds to a toric valuation. The dominant relation among the orbits is described in terms of the lattice points. As a corollary we obtain the answer to the embedded version of the Nash problem for an invariant ideal on a toric variety.
