We have studied the transmission of surface acoustic waves (SAWs) in ferromagnetic/non-magnetic/ferromagnetic tryilayers. The SAW scattering matrix is studied for devices with various non-magnetic spacer thickness, which defines the strength of the interlayer exchange coupling. We find the SAW transmission amplitude depends on their propagation direction when the two ferromagnetic layers are coupled antiferromagnetically. The degree of such SAW nonreciprocity increases with increasing exchange coupling strength and reaches 37 dB/mm for a device with the thinnest spacer layer. These results show the potential of interlayer exchange coupled synthetic antiferromagnets for viable acoustic nonreciprocal transmission devices, such as circulators and isolators.

Magnetic skyrmion, i.e. a topologically stable swirling spin texture, appears as a particle-like object in the two-dimensional (2D) systems, and has recently attracted attention as a candidate of novel information carrier. In the real three-dimensional (3D) systems, a skyrmion is expected to form a string structure along an extra dimension, while its experimental identification has rarely been achieved. Here, we report the direct visualization of 3D shape of individual skyrmion strings, for the recently discovered room-temperature skyrmion-hosting noncentrosymmetric compound Mn1.4Pt0.9Pd0.1Sn. For this purpose, we have newly developed the magnetic X-ray tomography measurement system that can apply magnetic field, which plays a key role on the present achievement. Through the tomographic reconstruction of the 3D magnetization distribution based on the transmission images taken from various angles, a genuine skyrmion string running through the entire thickness of the sample, as well as various defect structures such as the interrupted and Y-shaped strings, are successfully identified. The observed point defect may represent the emergent magnetic monopole, as recently proposed theoretically. The present tomographic approach with tunable magnetic field paves the way for the direct visualization of the structural dynamics of individual skyrmion strings in the 3D space, which will contribute to the better understanding of the creation, annihilation and transfer process of these topological objects toward the potential device applications.

The Curie temperature is one of the most fundamental physical properties of ferromagnetic materials and can be described by Weiss molecular field theory with the exchange interaction of neighboring atoms. Recently, the electric-field-induced modulation of the Curie temperature has been demonstrated in transition metals. This can be interpreted as indirect evidence for the electrical modulation of exchange coupling. However, the scenario has not yet been experimentally verified. Here, we demonstrate the electrical control of exchange coupling in cobalt film from direct magnetization measurements. We find that the reduction in magnetization with temperature, which is caused by thermal spin wave excitation and scales with Bloch's law, clearly depends on the applied electric field. Furthermore, we confirm that the correlation between the electric-field-induced modulation of the Curie temperature and that of exchange coupling follows Weiss molecular field theory.

We present monitoring campaign observations at optical and near-infrared (NIR) wavelengths for a radio-loud active galactic nucleus (AGN) at z=0.840, SDSS~J110006.07+442144.3 (hereafter, J1100+4421), which was identified during a flare phase in late February, 2014. The campaigns consist of three intensive observing runs from the discovery to March, 2015, mostly within the scheme of the OISTER collaboration. Optical-NIR light curves and simultaneous spectral energy distributions (SEDs) are obtained. Our measurements show the strongest brightening in March, 2015. We found that the optical-NIR SEDs of J1100+4421 show an almost steady shape despite the large and rapid intranight variability. This constant SED shape is confirmed to extend to $\sim5~μ$m in the observed frame using the archival WISE data. Given the lack of absorption lines and the steep power-law spectrum of $α_ν\sim-1.4$, where $f_ν\proptoν^{α_ν}$, synchrotron radiation by a relativistic jet with no or small contributions from the host galaxy and the accretion disk seems most plausible as an optical-NIR emission mechanism. The steep optical-NIR spectral shape and the large amplitude of variability are consistent with this object being a low $ν_{\rm{peak}}$ jet-dominated AGN. In addition, sub-arcsec resolution optical imaging data taken with Subaru Hyper Suprime-Cam does not show a clear extended component and the spatial scales are significantly smaller than the large extensions detected at radio wavelengths. The optical spectrum of a possible faint companion galaxy does not show any emission lines at the same redshift and hence a merging hypothesis for this AGN-related activity is not supported by our observations.

The x-ray magnetic circular dichroism measurement reveals that the interfacial intermixing suppresses only the perpendicular orbital moment of Fe, while the intermixing simultaneously suppresses both the perpendicular and in-plane orbital moments of Co.

However, it has been pointed out by Hasenfratz that the chiral fermion action in Luscher's formulation of lattice chiral gauge theory is not invariant under CP transformation. In this thesis, we first review the method of constructing chiral gauge theory on the lattice. Then we generalize the analysis of Hasenfratz and show that CP symmetry is not manifestly implemented for the local and doubler-free Ginsparg-Wilson operator under rather general assumptions for chiral projection operators. We next calculate the fermion generating functional and precisely identify where the effects of this CP breaking appear in this formulation. The basics of lattice gauge theory are briefly summarized in Appendix.A.

The CP symmetry is not manifestly implemented for the local and doubler-free Ginsparg-Wilson operator in lattice chiral gauge theory. We precisely identify where the effects of this CP breaking appear. We show that they appear in: (I) Overall constant phase of the fermion generating functional. (II) Overall constant coefficient of the fermion generating functional. (III) Fermion propagator appearing in external fermion lines and the propagator connected to Yukawa vertices. The first effect appears from the transformation of the path integral measure and it is absorbed into a suitable definition of the constant phase factor for each topological sector; in this sense there appears no ``CP anomaly''. The second constant arises from the explicit breaking in the action and it is absorbed by the suitable weights with which topological sectors are summed. The last one in the propagator is inherent to this formulation and cannot be avoided by a mere modification of the projection operator, for example, in the framework of the Ginsparg-Wilson operator. This breaking emerges as an (almost) contact term in the propagator when the Higgs field, which is treated perturbatively, has no vacuum expectation value. In the presence of the vacuum expectation value, however, a completely new situation arises and the breaking becomes intrinsically non-local, though this breaking may still be removed in a suitable continuum limit. This non-local CP breaking is expected to persist for a non-perturbative treatment of the Higgs coupling.

If one uses a general class of Ginsparg-Wilson operators, it is known that CP symmetry is spoiled in chiral gauge theory for a finite lattice spacing and the Majorana fermion is not defined in the presence of chiral symmetric Yukawa couplings. We study one-loop fermion contributions to the self-energy of the gauge field, which are related to the fermion contributions to the one-loop $β$ function and to the Weyl anomaly. We first explicitly demonstrate that the Ward identity is satisfied by the self-energy tensor. By performing careful analyses, we then obtain the correct self-energy tensor free of infra-red divergences, as a general consideration of the Weyl anomaly indicates. This demonstrates that our general operators give correct chiral and Weyl anomalies. In general, however, the Wilsonian effective action, which is supposed to be free of infra-red complications, is expected to be essential in the analyses of our general class of Dirac operators for dynamical gauge field.

A lattice regularization of the supersymmetric Wess-Zumino model is studied by using Ginsparg-Wilson operators. We recognize a certain conflict between the lattice chiral symmetry and the Majorana condition for Yukawa couplings, or in Weyl representation a conflict between the lattice chiral symmetry and Yukawa couplings. This conflict is also related, though not directly, to the fact that the kinetic (Kähler) term and the superpotential term are clearly distinguished in the continuum Wess-Zumino model, whereas these two terms are mixed in the Ginsparg-Wilson operators. We illustrate a case where lattice chiral symmetry together with naive Bose-Fermi symmetry is imposed by preserving a SUSY-like symmetry in the free part of the Lagrangian; one-loop level non-renormalization of the superpotential is then maintained for finite lattice spacing, though the finite parts of wave function renormalization deviate from the supersymmetric value. All these properties hold for the general Ginsparg-Wilson algebra independently of the detailed construction of lattice Dirac operators.

Here $k$ stands for a non-negative integer and $k=0$ corresponds to the ordinary Ginsparg-Wilson relation. We analyze the locality properties of Dirac operators which solve the above algebraic relation.
We first show that the free fermion operator is analytic in the entire Brillouin zone for a suitable choice of parameters $m_{0}$ and $r$, and there exists a well-defined ``mass gap'' in momentum space, which in turn leads to the exponential decay of the operator in coordinate space for any finite $k$. This mass gap in the free fermion operator suggests that the operator is local for sufficiently weak background gauge fields. We in fact establish a finite locality domain of gauge field strength for $Γ_{5}=γ_{5}-(aγ_{5}D)^{2k+1}$ for any finite $k$, which is sufficient for the cohomological analyses of chiral gauge theory. We also present a crude estimate of the localization length defined by an exponential decay of the Dirac operator, which turns out to be much shorter than the one given by the general Legendre expansion.
