In recent years, demand for scintillation detectors with high time resolution (better than 100 ps) has emerged in high-energy physics and medical imaging applications. In particular, time of flight positron emission tomography (TOF-PET) can greatly benefit from increasing time resolution of scintillators, which leads to the increase of signal-to-noise ratio, decrease of patient dose, and achievement of the superior spatial resolution of PET images. Currently, extensive research of various types of materials is carried out to achieve the best time resolution. In this review, the recent progress of various approaches is summarized and scintillation compounds with the best temporal characteristics are first reviewed. The review presents the physical processes causing fast luminescence in inorganic and organic materials. Special attention is paid to nanocomposites which belong to a new perspective class of scintillating materials, consisting of a plastic matrix, inorganic nanocrystalline fillers, and organic or inorganic luminescence activators and shifters. The main features and functions of all parts of existing and prospective nanocomposite scintillators are also discussed. A number of currently created and investigated nanocomposite materials with various compounds and structures are reviewed.

The world is suffering from a pandemic called COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. National governments have problems evaluating the reach of the epidemic, due to having limited resources and tests at their disposal. This problem is especially acute in low and middle-income countries (LMICs). Hence, any simple, cheap and flexible means of evaluating the incidence and evolution of the epidemic in a given country with a reasonable level of accuracy is useful. In this paper, we propose a technique based on (anonymous) surveys in which participants report on the health status of their contacts. This indirect reporting technique, known in the literature as network scale-up method, preserves the privacy of the participants and their contacts, and collects information from a larger fraction of the population (as compared to individual surveys). This technique has been deployed in the CoronaSurveys project, which has been collecting reports for the COVID-19 pandemic for more than two months. Results obtained by CoronaSurveys show the power and flexibility of the approach, suggesting that it could be an inexpensive and powerful tool for LMICs.

The effect of the electromagnetic irradiation on the current-voltage characteristics (IVCs) of a wide superconducting film is experimentally investigated. In contrast to the microwave field (several GHz) which suppresses vortex resistivity, the action of the rf field (tens of MHz) leads to significant expansion of the linear part of the IVC due to rapid suppression of the critical current with a slower change in the upper stability limit of the vortex state where the phase-slip lines (PSLs) occur. With an increase in the rf power, the stepwise structure of the IVC associated with the PSLs becomes smoothed and eventually disappears. A model of the IVC in the adiabatic regime is proposed, which explains the effects of smoothing of the voltage steps and the suppression of the critical current.

The fall of the Annama meteorite occurred early morning (local time) on April 19, 2014 on the Kola Peninsula (Russia). Based on mineralogy and physical properties, Annama is a typical H chondrite. It has a high Ar-Ar age of 4.4 Ga. Its cosmic ray exposure history is atypical as it is not part of the large group of H chondrites with a prominent 7 - 8 Ma peak in the exposure age histograms. Instead, its exposure age is within uncertainty of a smaller peak at 30 \pm 4 Ma. The results from short-lived radionuclides are compatible with an atmosperic pre-entry radius of 30 - 40 cm. However, based on noble gas and cosmogenic radionuclide data, Annama must have been part of a larger body (radius >65 cm) for a large part of its cosmic ray exposure history. The 10Be concentration indicates a recent (3 - 5 Ma) breakup which may be responsible for the Annama parent body size reduction to 30 - 35 cm pre-entry radius.

We have measured temperature dependencies of the electric resistance $R$ and upper critical magnetic field $H_{c2}$ of a magnetic superconductor Dy$_{0.6}$Y$_{0.4}$Rh$_{3.85}$Ru$_{0.15}$B$_4$. The measurements were made for different angles $\varphi$ of magnetic field inclination to the direction of measuring current and revealed strong anisotropy of the behavior of $R(T)$ and the values of $H_{c2}(T)$. By using the Werthamer-Gelfand-Hohenberg theory, we determined the Maki parameter $α$ and the parameter of the spin-orbital interaction. For $\varphi = 0^\circ$ and $90^\circ$ both parameters are close to zero, thus the magnitude of $H_{c2}(0) \approx 38$ kOe is basically limited by the orbital effect. At $\varphi = 45^\circ$, a large value of the parameter $α= 4.2$ indicates dominating role of the spin-paramagnetic effect in the suppression of $H_{c2}(0)$ down to $8.8$ kOe. We suggest that such behavior of $R(T)$ and $H_{c2}(T)$ is caused by internal magnetism of the Dy atoms which may strongly depend on the magnetic field orientation.

Abstract:
The Andreev reflection spectra were studied for the first time in the magnetic superconductor Dy0.6Y0.4Rh3.85Ru0.15B4. It is found that an external magnetic field (up to 0.7 Hc2) is a strong stimulator of superconductivity in contrast with traditional superconductors with a singlet pairing. The ratio 2Δ/kBTc \approx 4.0 obtained for some contacts is higher than the value 3.52 which is typical of c…

It is found that an external magnetic field (up to 0.7 Hc2) is a strong stimulator of superconductivity in contrast with traditional superconductors with a singlet pairing. The ratio 2Δ/kBTc \approx 4.0 obtained for some contacts is higher than the value 3.52 which is typical of conventional superconductors with a weak electron-phonon interaction. It has been proposed that in Dy0.6Y0.4Rh3.85Ru0.15B4 a triplet mechanism of superconducting pairing is realized.

Andreev reflection spectra have been measured in a new superconductor EuAsFeO0.85F0.15 having an unexpectedly low superconducting transition temperature Tc~11.3 K among related FeAs compounds on a base Sm and Gd surrounding Eu in the series of lanthanides. The nearly fivefold lower Tc, as against the expected value, is attributed to the divalent properties of Eu ions when in the compound investigated along with the weakly magnetic Eu3+ ions may be present and the strongly magnetic Eu2+ ones that is a strong destructive factor for superconductivity. Most of the spectra measured showed features that corresponds to two energy gaps whose values varied from contact to contact within 2Δs/kTc=2.2{\pm}4.7 and 2Δ1/kTc=5.1{\pm}11.7 for small and large gap, respectively. The corresponding variations for single-gap spectra are 2Δ/kTc = 2.6{\pm}6.4. The relatively large size of crystallites (no less than ~25 μ{m}) and the large number of contacts measured (several tens) suggest with a high degree of probability that the spectra obtained account quite fully for the gap distribution practically in all crystallographic directions. The data obtained and the absence of zero gaps in the measured spectra evidence in favor of the anisotropic s- or s\pm-symmetry of the order parameter in EuAsFeO0.85F0.15 that was revealed in other similar compounds with higher Tc. Thus, the character of the gap function Δ(k) in this compound is inconsistent with the d-wave superconductivity observed in some low-Tc pnictides.

Its electric and magnetic properties have been investigated in magnetic fields from 0.1 to 140000 Oe. Critical magnetic fields Hc1, and Hc2 were measured and hence the magnetic penetration depths and the coherence length have been estimated. The temperature dependence Hc2 (T) exhibits clear hyperbolic - type behavior starting with the lowest fields. The data derived were used to estimate probable high Tc and Hc2 in compounds doped with rare-earths having small atomic radii.
