Abstract:
Polarized neutron reflectometry measurements are presented exploring the evolution of ferrimagnetism in GdTiO$_3$ films as they are confined between SrTiO$_3$ layers of variable thicknesses. As GdTiO$_3$ films approach the thin layer limit and are confined within a substantially thicker SrTiO$_3$ matrix, the TiO$_6$ octahedral tilts endemic to GdTiO$_3$ coherently relax toward the undistorted, cub…

Polarized neutron reflectometry measurements are presented exploring the evolution of ferrimagnetism in GdTiO$_3$ films as they are confined between SrTiO$_3$ layers of variable thicknesses. As GdTiO$_3$ films approach the thin layer limit and are confined within a substantially thicker SrTiO$_3$ matrix, the TiO$_6$ octahedral tilts endemic to GdTiO$_3$ coherently relax toward the undistorted, cubic phase of SrTiO$_3$. Our measurements reveal that the ferrimagnetic state within the GdTiO$_3$ layers survives as the TiO$_6$ octahedral tilts in the GdTiO$_3$ layers are suppressed. Furthermore, our data suggest that a magnetic dead layer develops within the GdTiO$_3$ layer at each GdTiO$_3$/ SrTiO$_3$ interface. The ferrimagnetic moment inherent to the core GdTiO$_3$ layers is negligibly (in models with dead layers) or only weakly (in models without dead layers) impacted as the octahedral tilt angles are suppressed by more than 50$\%$ and the $t_{2g}$ bandwidth is dramatically renormalized.

Here we present polarized neutron reflectometry measurements exploring thin film heterostructures comprised of a strongly correlated Mott state, GdTiO$_3$, embedded with SrTiO$_3$ quantum wells. Our results reveal that the net ferromagnetism inherent to the Mott GdTiO$_3$ matrix propagates into the nominally nonmagnetic SrTiO$_3$ quantum wells and tracks the magnetic order parameter of the host Mott insulating matrix. Beyond a well thickness of 5 SrO layers, the magnetic moment within the wells is dramatically suppressed, suggesting that quenched well magnetism comprises the likely origin of quantum critical magnetotransport in this thin film architecture. Our data demonstrate that the interplay between proximate exchange fields and polarity induced carrier densities can stabilize extended magnetic states within SrTiO$_3$ quantum wells.

Deviations from Landau Fermi liquid behavior are ubiquitous features of the normal state of unconventional superconductors. Despite several decades of investigation, the underlying mechanisms of these properties are still not completely understood. In this work, we show that two-dimensional electron liquids at SrTiO3/RTiO3 (R = Gd or Sm) interfaces reveal strikingly similar physics. Analysis of Hall and resistivity data show a clear separation of transport and Hall scattering rates, also known as "two-lifetime" behavior. This framework gives a remarkably simple and general description of the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient. Distinct transport lifetimes accurately describe the transport phenomena irrespective of the nature of incipient magnetic ordering, the degree of disorder, confinement, or the emergence of non-Fermi liquid behavior. The Hall scattering rate diverges at a critical quantum well thickness, coinciding with a quantum phase transition. Collectively, these results introduce new constraints on the existing microscopic theories of lifetime separation and point to the need for unified understanding.

Abstract:
We report that a deionized water etching and thermal annealing technique can be effective for preparing atomically-flat and singly-terminated surfaces of single crystalline SrTiO3 substrates. After a two-step thermal-annealing and deionized-water etching procedure, topography measured by atomic force microscopy shows the evolution of substrates from a rough to step-terraced surface structure. Lateral force microscopy confirms that the atomically-flat surfaces are singly-terminated. Moreover, this technique can be used to remove excessive strontium oxide or hydroxide composites segregated on the SrTiO3 surface. This acid-etchant-free technique facilitates the preparation of atomically-aligned SrTiO3 substrates, which promotes studies on two-dimensional physics of complex oxide interfaces.
