We fully investigate the symmetry breaking patterns occurring upon creation of composite non-Abelian strings: vortex strings in non-Abelian theories where different sets of colours have different amounts of flux. After spontaneous symmetry breaking, there remains some internal colour degrees of freedom attached to these objects, which we argue must exist in a Flag manifold, a more general kind of projective space than both $\mathbb{CP}(N)$ and the Grassmannian manifold. These strings are expected to be BPS, since its constituents are. We demonstrate that this is true and construct a low-energy effective action for the fluctuations of the internal Flag moduli, which we then re-write it in two different ways for the dynamics of these degrees of freedom: a gauged linear sigma model with auxiliary fields and a non-linear sigma model with an explicit target space metric for the Flag Manifolds, both of which $\mathcal{N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetric. We finish by performing some groundwork analysis of the resulting theory.

A new two dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ Supersymmetric Non-Linear Sigma Model describes the dynamics of internal moduli of the BPS semi-local vortex string supported in four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQED. While the core of these strings is very similar to Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices, they are defined with a characteristic size modulus, much like the instanton lump size. This entails that the constituting fields of the vortex do not decay exponentially, as one goes far away from the core of the string, but as a rational function. The appearance of an extra scale in the problem also allows for an explicit, analytic, approximate solution to be written for the BPS equation, surprisingly.
Despite the conceptually large differences between semi-local and non-Abelian vortices, it appears that the moduli structures have one main common feature, both undergo the same kind of heterotic deformation when a supersymmetry breaking potential term is added to the spacetime theory, moving from $\mathcal{N}=2$ to $\mathcal{N}=1$.
By adding a mass term for the gauge scalar multiplet, a heterotic deformation develops on the worldsheet, which breaks supersymmetry down to $(0,2)$ by coupling supertranslational fermionic zero modes to supersize ones. Such an interaction between zero modes of two different sectors was already hypothesized and subsequently found for non-Abelian strings, providing a neat way of circumventing accidental supersymmetry enhancement via Zumino's theorem. We find that, for small values of the spacetime mass term, an entirely analogous term develops on the worldsheet of semi-local strings.

We provide a brief summary of a method to calculate improvements to the Veneziano Amplitude, creating sub-leading non-linearities in the Regge trajectory of states. We formulate it as an extension of a computation by Makeenko and Olesen. We begin in a confining gauge theory coupled to matter, rewriting the meson scattering amplitude as a specific path integral over shapes and sizes of closed Wilson loops using the worldline formalism. We then prescribe how to further the computation at strong coupling by employing holography, which provides a prescription for the expectation value of these Wilson loops in strongly coupled regimes. We find that the problem can then be thought of as a computation in an effective field theory of a string worldsheet sigma model, evolving in a broad class of holographic backgrounds. A convenient interaction picture presents itself naturally in this context, allowing us to draw Feynman diagrams corresponding to the first few corrections due to weaker coupling regimes. The answer we find has qualitatively the same features as other endeavours with the same objective.

We supersymmetrise the Hopfion studied in a previous work. This soliton represents a closed semilocal vortex string in $U(1)$ gauge theory. It carries nonzero Hopf number due to the additional winding of a phase modulus as one moves along the closed string. We study this solution in $\mathcal{N}= 2$ supersymmetric QED with two flavours. As a preliminary exercise we compactify one space dimension and consider a straight vortex with periodic boundary conditions. It turns out to be 1/2-BPS saturated. An additional winding along the string can be introduced and it does not spoil the BPS nature of the object. Next, we consider a ring-like vortex in a non-compact space and show that the circumference of the ring $L$ can be stabilised once the previously mentioned winding along the string is introduced. Of course the ring-like vortex is not BPS but its energy becomes close to the BPS bound if $L$ is large, which can be guaranteed in the case that we have a large value of the angular momentum $J$. Thus we arrive at the concept of asymptotically BPS-saturated solitons. BPS saturation is achieved in the limit $J\rightarrow \infty$.

We consider meson scattering in the framework of the lattice strong coupling expansion. In particular we derive an expression for the 4-point function of meson operators in the planar limit of scalar Chromodynamics. Interestingly, in the naive continuum limit the expression coincides with an independently known result, that of the worldline formalism. Moreover, it was argued by Makeenko and Olesen that (assuming confinement) the resulting scattering amplitude in momentum space is the celebrated expression proposed by Veneziano several decades ago. This motivates us to also use holography in order to argue that the continuum expression for the scattering amplitude is related to the result obtained from flat space string theory. Our results hint that at strong coupling and large-$N_c$ the naive continuum limit of the lattice formalism can be related to a flat space string theory.

We compute meson scattering amplitudes using the holographic duality between confining gauge theories and string theory, in order to consider holographic corrections to the Veneziano amplitude and associated higher-point functions. The generic nature of such computations is explained, thanks to the well-understood nature of confining string backgrounds, and two different examples of the calculation in given backgrounds are used to illustrate the details. The effect we discover, whilst only qualitative, is re-obtainable in many such examples, in four-point but also higher point amplitudes.

Abstract:
We propose a holographic computation of the $2\rightarrow 2$ meson scattering in a curved string background, dual to a QCD-like theory. We recover the Veneziano amplitude and compute a perturbative correction due to the background curvature. The result implies a small deviation from a linear trajectory, which is a requirement of the UV regime of QCD.

Supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric Seiberg-like dualities for gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten theories, realised on branes

Abstract:
In this work we extend the results of previous derivations of Seiberg-like dualities (level-rank duality) between gauged Wess-Zumino-Witten theories. The arguments in use to identify a potential dual for the supersymmetric WZW theory based on the coset $\frac{U(N+M)_k}{U(N)_k}$ can be extended to be applied to a wider variety of gauge groups, notably $\frac{USp(2N+2M)_{2k}}{USp(2N)_{2k}}$ and…

The arguments in use to identify a potential dual for the supersymmetric WZW theory based on the coset $\frac{U(N+M)_k}{U(N)_k}$ can be extended to be applied to a wider variety of gauge groups, notably $\frac{USp(2N+2M)_{2k}}{USp(2N)_{2k}}$ and $\frac{SO(2N+2M)_{2k}}{SO(2N)_{2k}}$, which will be dealt with briefly. Most interestingly, non-supersymmetric versions of the latter theories can also be shown to have duals in a similar fashion. These results are supported by several pieces of evidence, string phenomenological interpretations of Seiberg duality, even in non-supersymmetric backgrounds, is helpful to justify the formulation, then, from field theory, quantities such as central charges or Witten indices are shown to match exactly. The stability of these non-supersymmetric models is also discussed and shown to be consistent.
