We consider a generic nonlinear extension of May's 1972 model by including all higher-order terms in the expansion around the chosen fixed point (placed at the origin) with random Gaussian coefficients. The ensuing analysis reveals that as long as the origin remains stable, it is surrounded by a "resilience gap": there are no other fixed points within a radius r*>0 and the system is therefore expected to be resilient to a typical initial displacement small in comparison to r*. The radius r* is shown to vanish at the same threshold where the origin loses local stability, revealing a mechanism by which systems close to the tip** point become less resilient. We also find that beyond the resilience radius the number of fixed points in a ball surrounding the original point of equilibrium grows exponentially with N, making systems dynamics highly sensitive to far enough displacements from the origin.

In the study of randomly connected neural network dynamics there is a phase transition from a `simple' state with few equilibria to a `complex' state characterised by the number of equilibria growing exponentially with the neuron population. Such phase transitions are often used to describe pathological brain state transitions observed in neurological diseases such as epilepsy. In this paper we investigate how more realistic heterogeneous network structures affect these phase transitions using techniques from random matrix theory. Specifically, we parameterise the network structure according to Dale's Law and use the Kac-Rice formalism to compute the change in the number of equilibria when a phase transition occurs. We also examine the condition where the network is not balanced between excitation and inhibition causing outliers to appear in the eigenspectrum. This enables us to compute the effects of different heterogeneous network connectivities on brain state transitions, which can provide new insights into pathological brain dynamics.

The zeros of the random Laurent series $1/μ- \sum_{j=1}^\infty c_j/z^j$, where each $c_j$ is an independent standard complex Gaussian, is known to correspond to the scaled eigenvalues of a particular additive rank 1 perturbation of a standard complex Gaussian matrix. For the corresponding random Maclaurin series obtained by the replacement $z \mapsto 1/z$, we show that these same zeros correspond to the scaled eigenvalues of a particular multiplicative rank 1 perturbation of a random unitary matrix. Since the correlation functions of the latter are known, by taking an appropriate limit the correlation functions for the random Maclaurin series can be determined. Only for $|μ| \to \infty$ is a determinantal point process obtained. For the one and two point correlations, by regarding the Maclaurin series as the limit of a random polynomial, a direct calculation can also be given.

Furthermore, using techniques from Random Matrix Theory, we show that the high-dimensional limit of our system has a third-order phase transition between a phase with a single fixed point and a phase with exponentially many fixed points. This is result is universal in the sense that it does not depend on finer details of the correlations for the random maps.

The singular values of products of standard complex Gaussian random matrices, or sub-blocks of Haar distributed unitary matrices, have the property that their probability distribution has an explicit, structured form referred to as a polynomial ensemble. It is furthermore the case that the corresponding bi-orthogonal system can be determined in terms of Meijer G-functions, and the correlation kernel given as an explicit double contour integral. It has recently been shown that the Hermitised product $X_M \cdots X_2 X_1A X_1^T X_2^T \cdots X_M^T$, where each $X_i$ is a standard real complex Gaussian matrix, and $A$ is real anti-symmetric shares exhibits analogous properties. Here we use the theory of spherical functions and transforms to present a theory which, for even dimensions, includes these properties of the latter product as a special case. As an example we show that the theory also allows for a treatment of this class of Hermitised product when the $X_i$ are chosen as sub-blocks of Haar distributed real orthogonal matrices.

In this paper, we highlight the role played by orthogonal and symplectic Harish-Chandra integrals in the study of real-valued matrix product ensembles. By making use of these integrals and the matrix-valued Fourier-Laplace transform, we find the explicit eigenvalue distributions for particular Hermitian anti-symmetric matrices and particular Hermitian anti-self dual matrices, involving both sums and products. As a consequence of these results, the eigenvalue probability density function of the random product structure $X_M \cdots X_1( iA) X_1^T \cdots X_M^T$, where each $X_i$ is a standard real Gaussian matrix, and $A$ is a real anti-symmetric matrix can be determined. For $M=1$ and $A$ the bidiagonal anti-symmetric matrix with 1's above the diagonal, this reclaims results of Defosseux. For general $M$, and this choice of $A$, or $A$ itself a standard Gaussian anti-symmetric matrix, the eigenvalue distribution is shown to coincide with that of the squared singular values for the product of certain complex Gaussian matrices first studied by Akemann et al. As a point of independent interest, we also include a self-contained diffusion equation derivation of the orthogonal and symplectic Harish-Chandra integrals.

A truncation of a Haar distributed orthogonal random matrix gives rise to a matrix whose eigenvalues are either real or complex conjugate pairs, and are supported within the closed unit disk. This is also true for a product $P_m$ of $m$ independent truncated orthogonal random matrices. One of most basic questions for such asymmetric matrices is to ask for the number of real eigenvalues. In this paper, we will exploit the fact that the eigenvalues of $P_m$ form a Pfaffian point process to obtain an explicit determinant expression for the probability of finding any given number of real eigenvalues. We will see that if the truncation removes an even number of rows and columns from the original Haar distributed orthogonal matrix, then these probabilities will be rational numbers. Finally, based on exact finite formulae, we will provide conjectural expressions for the asymptotic form of the spectral density and the average number of real eigenvalues as the matrix dimension tends to infinity.

We will show that in the limit of large dimension there is a stability-complexity phase transition analogue to the so-called May-Wigner transition known from linear models. Our approach uses an explicit derivation of a stochastic description of the finite-time Lyapunov exponents. These exponents are given as a system of coupled Brownian motions with hyperbolic repulsion called geometric Dyson Brownian motions. We compare our results with known models from the literature.

We investigate spectral properties of a Hermitised random matrix product which, contrary to previous product ensembles, allows for eigenvalues on the full real line. We prove that the eigenvalues form a bi-orthogonal ensemble, which reduces asymptotically to the Hermite Muttalib-Borodin ensemble. Explicit expressions for the bi-orthogonal functions as well as the correlation kernel are provided. Scaling the latter near the origin gives a limiting kernel involving Meijer G-functions, and the functional form of the global density is calculated. As a part of this study, we introduce a new matrix transformation which maps the space of polynomial ensembles onto itself. This matrix transformation is closely related to the so-called hyperbolic Harish-Chandra-Itzykson-Zuber integral.

A suitable generalisation of the original definition of the Muttalib--Borodin ensemble allows for negative eigenvalues. In the cases of generalised Gaussian, symmetric Jacobi and Cauchy weights, we show that the problem of computing the normalisations and the biorthogonal polynomials can be reduced down to Muttalib--Borodin ensembles with classical weights on the positive half-line.

Random matrices formed from i.i.d. standard real Gaussian entries have the feature that the expected number of real eigenvalues is non-zero. This property persists for products of such matrices, independently chosen, and moreover it is known that as the number of matrices in the product tends to infinity, the probability that all eigenvalues are real tends to unity. We quantify the distribution of the number of real eigenvalues for products of finite size real Gaussian matrices by giving an explicit Pfaffian formula for the probability that there are exactly $k$ real eigenvalues as a determinant with entries involving particular Meijer G-functions. We also compute the explicit form of the Pfaffian correlation kernel for the correlation between real eigenvalues, and the correlation between complex eigenvalues. The simplest example of these - the eigenvalue density of the real eigenvalues - gives by integration the expected number of real eigenvalues. Our ability to perform these calculations relies on the construction of certain skew-orthogonal polynomials in the complex plane, the computation of which is carried out using their relationship to particular random matrix averages.

We consider matrix-valued stochastic processes known as isotropic Brownian motions, and show that these can be solved exactly over complex fields. While these processes appear in a variety of questions in mathematical physics, our main motivation is their relation to a May-Wigner-like stability analysis, for which we obtain a stability phase diagram. The exact results establish the full joint probability distribution of the finite-time Lyapunov exponents, and may be used as a starting point for a more detailed analysis of the stability-instability phase transition. Our derivations rest on an explicit formulation of a Fokker-Planck equation for the Lyapunov exponents. This formulation happens to coincide with an exactly solvable class of models of the Calgero-Sutherland type, originally encountered for a model of phase-coherent transport. The exact solution over complex fields describes a determinantal point process of biorthogonal type similar to recent results for products of random matrices, and is also closely related to Hermitian matrix models with an external source.

In this review we summarise recent results for the complex eigenvalues and singular values of finite products of finite size random matrices, their correlation functions and asymptotic limits. The matrices in the product are taken from ensembles of independent real, complex, or quaternionic Ginibre matrices, or truncated unitary matrices. Additional mixing within one ensemble between matrices and their inverses is also covered. Exact determinantal and Pfaffian expressions are given in terms of the respective kernels of orthogonal polynomials or functions. Here we list all known cases and some straightforward generalisations. The asymptotic results for large matrix size include new microscopic universality classes at the origin and a generalisation of weak non-unitarity close to the unit circle. So far in all other parts of the spectrum the known standard universality classes have been identified. In the limit of infinite products the Lyapunov and stability exponents share the same normal distribution. To leading order they both follow a permanental point processes. We consider products of independent random matrices taken from the induced Ginibre ensemble with complex or quaternion elements. The joint densities for the complex eigenvalues of the product matrix can be written down exactly for a product of any fixed number of matrices and any finite matrix size. We show that the squared absolute values of the eigenvalues form a permanental process, generalising the results of Kostlan and Rider for single matrices to products of complex and quaternionic matrices. Based on these findings, we can first write down exact results and asymptotic expansions for the so-called hole probabilities, that a disc centered at the origin is void of eigenvalues. Second, we compute the asymptotic expansion for the opposite problem, that a large fraction of complex eigenvalues occupies a disc of fixed radius centered at the origin; this is known as the overcrowding problem. While the expressions for finite matrix size depend on the parameters of the induced ensembles, the asymptotic results agree to leading order with previous results for products of square Ginibre matrices.

We study the joint probability density of the eigenvalues of a product of rectangular real, complex or quaternion random matrices in a unified way. The random matrices are distributed according to arbitrary probability densities, whose only restriction is the invariance under left and right multiplication by orthogonal, unitary or unitary symplectic matrices, respectively. We show that a product of rectangular matrices is statistically equivalent to a product of square matrices. Hereby we prove a weak commutation relation of the random matrices at finite matrix sizes, which previously have been discussed for infinite matrix size. Moreover we derive the joint probability densities of the eigenvalues. To illustrate our results we apply them to a product of random matrices drawn from Ginibre ensembles and Jacobi ensembles as well as a mixed version thereof. For these weights we show that the product of complex random matrices yield a determinantal point process, while the real and quaternion matrix ensembles correspond to Pfaffian point processes. Our results are visualized by numerical simulations. Furthermore, we present an application to a transport on a closed, disordered chain coupled to a particle bath.

We discuss the product of $M$ rectangular random matrices with independent Gaussian entries, which have several applications including wireless telecommunication and econophysics. For complex matrices an explicit expression for the joint probability density function is obtained using the Harish-Chandra--Itzykson--Zuber integration formula. Explicit expressions for all correlation functions and moments for finite matrix sizes are obtained using a two-matrix model and the method of bi-orthogonal polynomials. This generalises the classical result for the so-called Wishart--Laguerre Gaussian unitary ensemble (or chiral unitary ensemble) at M=1, and previous results for the product of square matrices. The correlation functions are given by a determinantal point process, where the kernel can be expressed in terms of Meijer $G$-functions. We compare the results with numerical simulations and known results for the macroscopic level density in the limit of large matrices. The location of the endpoints of support for the latter are analysed in detail for general $M$. Finally, we consider the so-called ergodic mutual information, which gives an upper bound for the spectral efficiency of a MIMO communication channel with multi-fold scattering.
